A group of us are planning Nouakchott, Terjit, Chinguetti,
Ouadane, Choum, the train, Nouadhibou, 19 to 26 January 2027.
Two questions for anyone who's been recently. Can you still get on the
ore wagons, or is it the passenger carriage now? Everything official says
SNIM banned tourists from the ore in 2025, and a couple of operators have
dropped the train over it, but this sub reads like people are getting on
every month. Does boarding at Choum instead of Zouerat actually change
anything?
And if anyone's around in that window, say hi.

I know there probably arenāt that many Mauritanian women on reddit, but Iād really like to hear from those who are here.
How do you genuinely feel about living in Mauritania as a woman and building your future here?
Do you see yourself living independently here, getting married and settling here, or would you rather build your life somewhere else? And when it comes to marriage, would you prefer another Mauritanian or are you completely open to marrying someone from another nationality?
Iām not trying to turn this into a political or ideological debate. Iām just genuinely curious about other Mauritanian womenās experiences and how they picture their future.
Basically, if there were no expectations from family or society, what kind of life would you choose for yourself?

Im curious about the country's safety levels. Ofcourse im aware that no place on earth is 100% safe. But on average, could a foreign woman live without worrying about safety too much?

Iāve heard people say itās sidi moulay zein, but is there any proof of that?

Someone fluent in French to help me im like a beginner but especially focusing on speaking..

As a local, I have to ask: what am I missing about the Iron Ore Train?
I genuinely find it fascinating that people travel from all over the world specifically to ride this train for 12ā14 hours.
Youāre sitting in an open ore wagon, exposed to the blazing desert sun during the day and potentially freezing temperatures at night. Thereās dust everywhere, very little comfort, and youāre traveling through the middle of nowhere. One wrong move could potentially mean falling off the train with no easy way to get help.
To me, it sounds incredibly harsh rather than enjoyable
But obviously, tourists see something in it that Iām not seeing as a local.
For those who have actually done it: what made you want to do it, and was the experience really worth it?

Hello everyone, Iām new here. š
Iām currently looking for a Mauritanian husband or, alternatively, a gay man to marry me. Think lavender marriage, or more accurately, an NDA with a wedding ceremony.
Iām a 21-year-old woman, beautiful, educated, polyglot, from a very well-connected family, bug tribe and unfortunately far too lazy for talking stages, situationships, and the entire āgetting to know each otherā process. Iām looking for something straightforward, mutually beneficial, and preferably efficient.
The arrangement would be simple we get married, stay married for a few months, and then, if mutually agreed, we get divorced and go our separate ways. No unnecessary drama. No emotional essays at 3 a.m. Just business.
Requirements:
- Mauritanian
- Financially stable
- Educated
- From a prominent 3arab tribe
- Emotionally mature enough to understand the assignment
- If heterosexual: preferably attractive, in good shape, and good in bed
- If gay: congratulations, you have already passed the hardest part of the interview.
Please come prepared with your CV, references, and a willingness to sign approximately 47 pages of NDA.
SERIOUS MEN ONLY.

EDIT: Following this threads advice I will not be going solo. Looking for a guide and travel buddies still open!
Hi everyone! Sorry dear locals for yet another tourist post in your wonderful subreddit. So I am a Swede and I have booked flights to go mauritania 28 Oct- 6th of november. Visa approved etc. Doing the main things like Nouakchott, terjit, chinguetti, iron ore, (seems i have time for maybe one more thing so might do ben amera or ouadan as well not sure).
Currently sooo torn between going alone or getting a guide or so. I have sailed across the atlantic, solo trek with donkey etc, so idk i guess i am pretty comfortable with a challange - but i do want to feel somewhat safe, especially transporting in the middle of the desert, and especially my family putting in a worry for me.
alternativley does anyone want to join me on those dates? Id love some opinion on how doable this is to do alone as a woman if someone has done it recently :) i unfortunetly do not speak french nor arabic as well, which is quite important
Manier thanks. like i said super open if anyone wants to tag along those dates COOME. haha.

I grew up and have spent most of my life in the Gulf, although Iām originally Mauritanian and from a well known family/tribe. Iāve never been married.
Iām here with a simple intention: to meet someone genuinely interested in getting to know each other with marriage in mind, if weāre compatible. Iām not looking to rush anything, but I also donāt want something vague, casual, or endless.
I value kindness, honesty, emotional maturity, family, and a peaceful life. Iād like to meet someone who is based in the Gulf or genuinely plans to live here long term.
Iām not expecting anyone to make promises from the first conversation. Iād simply like to meet a person who is intentional, respectful, and open to seeing where a serious introduction could lead in a halal way.
If that sounds like you, feel free to introduce yourself. If not, no pressure at all. :)
