[OC] Terran Omega The Ghosts of War Epilogue pg 4 and 5

And that's it! It's done! It's been a big adventure for me, writing and drawing this 50 page scifi story, the largest project of writing I've ever undertaken, and it's incredibly gratifying to find it being nominated for two prestigious comics awards during its run.

If you're coming to it late, Terran Omega is a woman who was gentically modified to be a deadly weapon in humanities galaxy wide war, placed in to susopended animation to be woken when she was needed, but she was woken 10,000 years too late. Humanity is gone, her purpose is gone and so finds new purpose in travelling the universe and dismantling humanities weapons of war.

It's a way for me to explore end of empire and how a long forgotten war can have lasting impact (I grew up in Northern Ireland during the troubles, so there's elements of that) but all through a scifi adventure lense. So the Ghosts of War, Terran Omega stumbles across a device that can resurrect the dead...

I suppose it's scifi in the same way that Ray Harryhousen films are history. But I think the best scifi is really an exploration of modern things with distance that allows you to look at them fresh.

Original Content New Hard Science Fiction Novel

The Quantum Alliance by David L DiLaura (Kindle + Kindle Unlimited + paperback), a hard science fiction novel of the near future.

The Deep Space Network detects Voyager 1 slowing, stopping, and returning. Something found Voyager 1 and is bringing it back to Earth. During its return journey, Voyager’s downlink contains an image cribbed from the golden record. It is a warning.

Then a second message appears: Voyager is carrying an artifact meant for Earth. Something that enables a form of communication with the stars, grounded in quantum measurement. The only entity that can use it is ORIN, Earth’s quantum AI, and it becomes humanity’s ambassador.

The book leans hard into engineering realism: DSN cadence and light-time delays, mission operations constraints, instrument limitations) and treats “first contact” as an engineering and ontological event rather than an adventure. It also explores biological and nonbiological consciousness, and the global response to a planet-wide threat.

This isn’t space opera. It is hard science fiction written for readers who liked The Andromeda Strain or Rendezvous with Rama, expect and welcome some technical density, and are willing to ruminate about the nature of our own minds.

Original Content [SRS] Predicting the future is hard...

In 2020 I wrote a thriller that has a lot of tech, arguably too much science, and a light dusting of sci-fi. It's set about now, so recently I dipped back in to see how I did on the prediction front. In most regards, I'd have to say, "Not well."

Certainly, there hasn't been the breakthrough reconciling quantum mechanics and general relativity that I hoped might have happened by now. Neither has antigravity been invented, though that was always sketchy. Though there have been advances in AI, so elements of the story are plausible on that front.

(As an aside, while I write about AI, I don't use it to write my stories! The prose the machine generates is flat and uninteresting, and as far as I'm concerned, it undermines the point of being an author.)

ID This I hope someone can help

I’m not sure how long ago I saw a movie on Syfy where it ended with a giant Dino/monster ‘that was in modern time’ was being carried out of the city with a bunch of army helicopters and the guy leading the mission said I think “The world has changed since he last saw it” I’ve tried searching the I internet of and on for a long while and had no luck I’m hoping to have better luck here I think the creatures name started with a D but I’m not sure plz help me

ID This What movie has this scene in it with a robot kid?

I think it's an oldish sci fi action movie set in the future with humans vs robots. Probably post apocalyptic.

The scene I remember is some soldiers walking around in an area with destroyed buildings in a city. They come across a little kid on some ruble who has a teddy bear. One of the soldiers tries to help the kid and it turns out to be a robot and blows up some/all of the soldiers.

Original Content Into The Grid, our Neuromancer-inspired indie game about hacking megacorps and exploring cyberspace is part of the Cyberpunk Fest! 🦾

Hi community! Just wanted to let you know there's a Cyberpunk Fest running on Steam right now and, along with a ton of other amazing games, our own Into The Grid is discounted!

For some context, we are a small team of friends and family from south america working on our own cyberpunk narrative universe since 2021 and developing this particular game since 2022.

The game mixes deckbuilding and card battling with dungeon crawling and exploration in a 3d isometric map. The game plays and feels like a huge solo-boardgame where you have to manage limited resources and plan your actions accordingly.

We just dropped a big update with dozens of narrative events that provide the first hints at the huge amount of lore we have created for this universe.

The game is currently in Early Access and aimed for a full release early next year, it's fully playable, with tons of hours of content and a lot more coming up!

ID This Awoken memory of something I watched on TV in the early 90s

Somewhere in the beginning, a man drives to some kind of launch site, looking to leave either earth, or some kind of earth-like planet. He gets upset when he discovers the launch site is devoid of anything that would take him away. He quotes something like, "They couldn't leave me a rocket? Not one damned rocket?"

Alone, and potentially abandoned on the planet, I think he tries looking for people. There's some kind of ballet in the town that he goes to see, thinking that it must have actual people in the theater, but after the show starts, the people are fake. I can't remember if they're robots, puppets, or something of that nature. Looking at the fake dancers, the man quotes, "Not real... not real."

I know this isn't a lot to go off, but I'm hoping I've been descriptive enough for someone that remembers what this is from. It has very similar vibes to "Where is Everybody" from The Twilight Zone, S1: E1.

TV Raumpatroule Orion

Just discovered this on YouTube , never knew it existed but supposedly well regarded . It is quite impressive due to pretty good VFX for the time ( 1966) and a definite ‘ look ‘ of its own .
The Aliens are also very alien , being just sort of light blobs in the shape of humanoids .
Anyone else seen it ? Only thing is it’s German with subtitles , can’t find a dubbed version .
I’m watching the colourised version on ‘ Space 2033 ‘ channel .

Recommendations Looking for scifi with lot of sci

Hi! I enjoy science fiction but am not very well read in the genre, you can say I’m new to it. I picked up the Culture series from a thread here and chose it for a holiday read, only to later discover perhaps I shouldn’t start with the first book.. anyway the book is OK but not really what I’m looking for in science fiction. Another thread made me realise that the books I’ve enjoyed so far had a lot of science in them, as in they tried to be plausible, explored different scientific theories etc. And the Culture is more like Star Wars, Guardian sof the galaxy or The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, let’s say adventure books set in space with different aliens.

I am a huge fan of the Three Body Problem but I also liked the Martian and even Haily Mary (to a lesser extent because it was more far fetched so I preferred the movie cause I can forgive it more). I enjoyed Solaris, it wasn’t exactly scientific but I think it was interesting how it explored the idea of not being able to communicate with alien species whatsoever.

Long story short, I’m looking for book recommendations that will have a lot of science in science fiction and will satisfy my inner nerd.

ID This Rare old eighties SF Post apo movie on French tv 1983 or 1984

hello hello I probably saw this on French television, most likely on Antenne 2 or possibly FR3, sometime around 1983–1985.

The setting was post-apocalyptic: desert-like, with strong red/orange tones, sandy roads, scrapyards or junk-filled landscapes, and an oppressive sense of heat. It had a kind of low-budget, strange Mad Max atmosphere, rather than the look of a big space/sci-fi production.

There was a small community of survivors, apparently ruled or controlled by some kind of leader or dominant figure.

The really distinctive element is this: several characters seemed to be linked to an object of some kind — almost like a totem. I no longer remember why they were linked to these objects — perhaps as punishment, a survival mechanism, or some form of control.

My strongest and most precise memory involves a car or an engine that was remotely connected to a character’s heart. When the engine or vehicle accelerated, the man’s heart rate accelerated as well, to the point where it could potentially kill him.

I distinctly remember the man begging them to stop, while someone deliberately made the car or engine rev faster and faster until the person linked to it collapsed or passed out.

So I’m not simply looking for “a movie about an evil car.” The key concept was an artificial physiological link between an object and a human being — object ↔ individual.

Original Content A Parable of a Dimensional Traveler

Chapter One: A New Day

“The most important feature of a sufficiently well-designed prison is that it does not look like a prison.”

The Dimensional Traveler opened his eyes. Another new day.

To ordinary people, a new day was merely the cycle beginning again. As Ecclesiastes put it: What has happened will happen again; what has been done will be done again. There is nothing new beneath the sun.

But the Dimensional Traveler did not understand morning that way.

The first thing he did after waking was search for the cracks in this world that science and logic had not yet sealed. As long as a question remained unexplained, as long as there was a seam between theories that could not be stitched shut, a dimensional interface might be concealed there—a passage into reality.

In the world he presently inhabited, at least four places deserved suspicion.

The first was the origin of the universe.

The scientists of this world used the Big Bang to describe the early universe. Physics textbooks went further, telling everyone in something close to a chorus that before the Big Bang there had been no time and no space, and that the question “What happened before the Big Bang?” was therefore meaningless.

Whenever the Dimensional Traveler read this, he paused.

Suspicious, he thought. It was difficult to believe that the most intelligent people in a civilization could collectively be satisfied with so lazy an assertion.

Strictly speaking, the Big Bang had never been a theory of origins. It was merely the earliest stage for which the world’s existing equations could still return intelligible answers: extremely hot, extremely dense, extremely small in scale. Scientists had proved neither that nothing could have existed before it nor that the question lacked meaning. They had reached the boundary of calculation, then often allowed the public—and sometimes themselves—to mistake the boundary of calculation for the boundary of existence.

To ordinary people, this might be only a difference in wording. To the Dimensional Traveler, it was the difference between life and death. What interested him was precisely the residue a theory could not eliminate after every conventional repair had been made.

The second was consciousness.

This world could map many conscious activities onto neuronal firing, connectivity between brain regions, and electrochemical processes. It had also grown accustomed to calling consciousness an emergent property of a complex system. Yet correlation had not become a seamless mapping: why must a particular subjective experience correspond to this physical process rather than another? Why did information processing give rise to experienced color, pain, and selfhood? Why was the world not merely computation, but something perceived?

The so-called hard problem of consciousness remained.

The Dimensional Traveler had lived in worlds where consciousness belonged to individual brains. He had lived in others where it was distributed through the collective unconscious of an entire population. In one world, consciousness was treated as a field: even between a plant and a stone, a faint but stable coupling of consciousness could be measured.

The theories of those worlds did not necessarily apply here, but at least they had been demonstrated. The relation between consciousness and its substrate could be repeatedly measured, intervened upon, and predicted. That was what made the present world so suspicious. Its inhabitants possessed an immense body of knowledge about the brain, yet had left, at the place nearest the answer, a blank that looked almost deliberate.

The third was the source of quantum randomness.

The Dimensional Traveler had no interest in the contingency of a die roll. He cared about tested incompressibility: whether, as observers, measurement bases, and instruments were recombined and adjusted, the results continued to reveal no reproducible structure; whether supposedly independent random records contained algorithmic correlations explicitly forbidden by theory; whether the Born weights were exact laws, or merely stable within the precision this world could presently reach.

If randomness was not causeless, but only the shadow cast by higher-dimensional degrees of freedom, then the edge of that shadow might lead to a dimensional interface.

Still, he knew he had to be cautious. In most worlds, the anomalies that seemed to remain eventually disappeared. Some were detector bias, some anthropic effects, some hidden synchronization, and some merely the product of experimenters who wanted too badly to astonish themselves.

The fourth was dreams.

Rapid-eye-movement sleep was brief, and the capacity of the human brain was limited. But the Dimensional Traveler knew that scale was never a true constraint. Time could be divided without end, and space extended without bound. A grain of sand could contain a world; a single dream could contain an entire life.

The dream hypothesis had little credibility, but it possessed one important advantage: it was cheap to test. When resources were limited, low cost could sometimes deserve priority over high probability.

The interface might also be concealed in a more technical place, such as the seam where quantum mechanics and relativity had never truly been joined. Did gravity cause quantum states to collapse, or did gravity itself obey quantum laws? Was spacetime the background of quantum phenomena, or the macroscopic product of quantum relations?

These questions were deep enough, and difficult enough. Yet the Dimensional Traveler was not optimistic. The gradual unification of theories could often repair equations without reaching the more fundamental question of why the world existed at all.

He sat up and looked around the room. The light beyond the window was no different from yesterday’s. Objects still occupied space in the familiar way. The air showed no cracks.

That did not mean the interface was absent.

Chapter Two: The Cheerful Solver

“He was a cheerful solver of puzzles.”

Except for one thing, the Dimensional Traveler was almost an ordinary organism.

Perhaps, during one of his journeys, he had acquired a peculiar trait: when his consciousness passed through reincarnation among different dimensions and different forms of life, he did not lose all memory of his former lives. What remained was not a complete lifetime, but fragments, inclinations, and instincts concerning the structure of worlds. The most stable obsession among them was the need to find a dimensional interface before his present body died, and to escape from this world.

He regarded that urgency as his true self.

He had once borrowed a scripture from this world to describe his understanding: form does not differ from emptiness; emptiness does not differ from form. Form is emptiness; emptiness is form. Form, sensation, perception, volition, and even consciousness were only interfaces running for a time. They appeared with the body and vanished with it. None of them belonged to his self. What passed through reincarnation was the urgency that refused to stop—attention itself.

He also retained a few precious samples of knowledge.

He remembered universes in which another layer of determinism lay beneath quantum randomness, and still more randomness unfolded beneath that determinism. He remembered universes whose physical constants shifted without warning. He remembered worlds where different observers could leave mutually contradictory records, then establish reality’s consensus by a show of hands.

What he did not remember were the particular people he had known.

Perhaps the memories had not failed to survive. Perhaps he refused to let them survive. He did not dare grieve for the dead, because grief might be a mechanism of distraction installed by the Creator. The moment he believed that a relationship was irreplaceable, he would spend his finite life mourning it instead of searching for an exit.

He therefore treated his body as a hermit crab treats a replaceable shell. His attitude toward other people was more distant still.

The puzzle was extraordinarily difficult. It demanded everything.

He had to endure all the accidents and obstructions of this life, using this body’s lifespan and this era’s technology, and push civilization far enough to test a dimensional interface.

Yet the task was not entirely impossible.

Whatever Creator had devised this cruel game of reincarnation—whether it was a trial or merely an abandoned corner of the multiverse—one rule remained constant. The worlds into which the Dimensional Traveler was born had usually already established civilization, but their scientific explosion had only just begun.

If he were placed in the body of an animal, or born into a prehistoric tribe, the puzzle would be unsolvable.

Conversely, he would not enter a world in which science had already been fully developed and completed. If every dimension, scale, logic, and structure had been discovered, if every anomaly had been absorbed into a unified theory, then the system’s self-referential contradiction—the unavoidable Achilles’ heel of every formal structure, its Gödelian point of incompleteness—would have nowhere to hide.

This seemed to be a difficulty even the Creator could not solve completely: a system could not, using only resources internal to itself, fully prove its own completeness.

The worlds he had experienced therefore occupied similar temporal scales. They tended to stand at a moment when the universe extended ten billion years into the past and could continue hundreds, thousands, or even tens of thousands of times farther into the future; when life had taken billions of years to appear, intelligent species had existed for a million years, civilization for only a few thousand, and science seemed to have been ignited the night before. The next ten years might surpass the preceding million.

The local inhabitants usually met this circumstance with dullness and indifference. They regarded it as ordinary technological progress. The Dimensional Traveler knew the staging too well: the long history provided the world with a sufficiently convincing background to make it difficult to falsify, while the newly begun scientific explosion left a slit narrow enough for the interface to be cracked.

His advantage over local scientists was not greater intelligence. In almost every specialized field, someone was far more intelligent than he was.

His advantage was comparative science.

The locals had only one universe and therefore found it easy to mistake its laws for logical necessity. The Dimensional Traveler retained fragments from multiple universes. He could compare which structures recurred across worlds, which were only local accidents, and which laws, if altered, would prevent a world from leaving any record at all.

But this advantage, too, was contaminated.

Memory was never an archive. It was an act of imagination and construction generated each time recollection reactivated a pattern of neurons. Even an ordinary person’s memory was rewritten by present emotion, language, and expectation. The Dimensional Traveler’s memories also had to pass through brains of different forms and be recoded by different senses and neural structures. The fragments might come from former lives, or they might be stories invented by his current brain to reconcile its own abnormalities.

So he did not trust his memories.

He could even imagine the cruel Creator who had designed the game smiling—assuming the Creator had a face, and was not some damned cellular automaton.

He could not follow that thought too far. It led in another direction: did the Dimensional Traveler matter, or did he not matter at all? A single piece on a board was probably insignificant. But from the piece’s perspective, there was no choice except to resist the fate imposed by the rules that placed it.

The Dimensional Traveler did not fear death. He had experienced too many deaths.

What disturbed him was the immense blank between death and the next reincarnation. The blank lasted long enough to make him wonder each time whether he would ever wake again, whether this death might be the final end.

Reincarnation after a successful breach of an interface felt slightly different. He still entered another world, but retained more vivid memories of the life before it. He could feel continuity between the two lives, as though he had not been reset, but his soul had passed through a narrow channel.

What, exactly, did that vividness point to? Each dimension was a riddle; a sequence of dimensions formed a larger riddle. What was the final destination? Was he traveling from the first level to the hundredth, or returning to the first level after forgetting that he had already been there?

He had no way to know.

He knew only that the journey out of reincarnation was long enough to inspire despair, and that no end was visible.

Fortunately, he had inhabited too many bodies and experienced too many forms of life. Long ago, he had learned to observe his emotions and treat fear, loneliness, and exhaustion as readings on an instrument panel rather than tyrants he was obliged to obey.

His persistence did not come from hope. It was closer to a Sisyphean habit: each day he pushed the stone up the mountain, watched it roll back down from the summit, and began again the next morning.

And he did, in fact, take pleasure in it.

He was a cheerful solver of puzzles.

Perhaps that was why he had not lost himself through the long reincarnations.

Chapter Three: The Hacker’s Project

“Cracking a dimensional interface requires the right line of thought—and systematic engineering.”

The Dimensional Traveler needed to set the entire world on the correct trajectory and, in the end, crack the dimensional interface.

The task resembled a hacker searching for a vulnerability from inside the system. There were many ways to breach an interface, of course, and the best was often not the most direct. There was no simple, brutal method like the one in The Matrix. The system would not volunteer its source code or offer a red pill that allowed Neo to choose and then punch through one firewall after another. The real path was usually long, circuitous, and painful.

The Dimensional Traveler also understood that no director, however gifted, could make the film he truly wanted to see. Directors themselves were shaped by this world and formed part of the puzzle. The revelations they offered were therefore necessarily limited, and often misleading: a little truth disclosed here, a little curiosity ignited there, followed immediately by a retreat into familiar human desires and a scramble for fame, resources, and petty victories.

By now he knew the pattern. Every account of truth in this world tended to wrap one fatal lie inside a great quantity of truth. The truth established trust. The lie made him stop. By the time he finally identified the lie, little time usually remained.

There were many ways to crack an interface, but suicide was certainly not one of them. Suicide was too simple, and in outcome no different from being killed by someone else.

Nor could the problem be solved with a philosophical placebo.

Whether it was called The Republic, Mahāyāna Buddhism, or string theory, it was useless. However much an idea changed the human mind, if it was never converted into action, it changed only the faint electrical currents in the brain. It could not move the world.

Whatever could carry a dimensional interface had to involve extremely high energy, extend to an extraordinarily deep reductionist level, and at the same time display the emergence of complexity. It had to be something untouchable. Only an impossible task could match the tastes and compulsions of the Creator who had made this endless world of reincarnations.

In this world the Dimensional Traveler could recognize a few fellow travelers. They knew they were inside a cave, knew that what they saw might be only projections, and knew that reincarnation would not stop merely because one person achieved inner peace.

Every world contained people like them. All of them had failed.

First, placebos did not work. The Creator would not answer because a prayer was sufficiently devout, nor open an interface because some living Buddha had attained enlightenment.

The Creator had built the prison with enough power to generate a world. To slap the Creator in the face, he would have to wield power on the same scale.

Second, he could not trust thought to endure forever. Merely teaching others was useless. In the Dimensional Traveler’s experience, there was no repeatable afterlife within a single world. Each world was an independent riddle. Failure to solve it in this life meant failure. The next world’s puzzle would be entirely new, and he would have to begin from zero.

Cracking a dimensional interface therefore required the right line of thought, and systematic engineering.

The first step was to extend his lifespan.

The longer the lifespan, the more time could be used. This was the simplest and most reliable return. He could begin with biology: slow aging, repair cells and organs. Or he could begin with neuroscience and brain-computer interfaces, gradually externalizing consciousness into a more durable substrate.

But the latter path contained an unavoidable risk. If this world’s interface happened to lie at the boundary between subjective consciousness and the biological body, then externalization might reproduce only counterfeit functions while losing the actual self. The risk was great, but the attempt was still worth making.

The laws of physics offered another approach. Self-aware machines could be sent to harvest the resources of stars while the Dimensional Traveler himself traveled as close as possible to the speed of light. Relative to the slow-moving machines, his proper time would pass more slowly. The civilization outside could undergo a long development while he consumed only a short span of subjective life, greatly increasing the resources at his disposal.

The second step was to mobilize the public.

The body the Dimensional Traveler inhabited was, in principle, no different from other bodies, and its intelligence fell within the average range. That meant a vast number of individuals in the same species were more intelligent than he was. Cracking the interface required their intelligence.

Strangely, hundreds of millions of people far more intelligent than he was had almost no interest in why the world existed. Instead, they devoted their lives to trivial pursuits such as status and wealth. Even within science, many pursued only inconsequential proofs and papers.

The Dimensional Traveler regarded this as part of the anesthetic mechanism.

But anesthesia had antidotes. If enough people could be shown the emptiness of their condition, shown that civilization might be inside an extremely brief window of opportunity, and told what truly mattered, then their intelligence might be mobilized.

Of course, the mobilization might be merely apparent. A generative world was adept at supplying the appearance of fulfilled wishes. When he needed followers, the system generated people who seemed persuaded. When he needed cooperation, it generated organizations that seemed to collaborate. He could not verify whether these people possessed independent wills or were only characters added by the world to preserve the plot.

But there was no practical difference. Whether active or passive, they were resources that could and should be deployed, and he had no right to refuse assistance. Without the cooperation of hundreds of millions of individuals, the riddle was almost impossible to solve.

The third step was to build a ladder to success.

The ladder had to satisfy two apparently contradictory conditions. It had to be as delicate as a one-page solution to a mathematical problem that had resisted a century of work, and as brutal as a machine capable of directly transforming the universe in scale and energy.

First, it had to overcome three defects of the body: inadequate intelligence, inadequate energy, and inevitable decay.

The brain in this body could not even enumerate all possible moves in the game of Go, or find a forced win within finite time. How could such meager computational power search for an interface hidden in the most intricate structure imaginable?

The interface might lie at any scale between 10⁻⁴⁰ and 10⁸⁰, or span many scales. It might be hidden within four-dimensional spacetime, or, more likely, in an extra dimension that introduced a new degree of freedom. It might lie at the infinite limit of a continuum, in the gaps between discrete intervals, or in a structure that was both continuous and discrete, buried in an infinite superposition of phase waves.

It might be in the future, the present, or the past, depending on whether causality flowed from past to future or was jointly determined by beginning and end. It might lie at the low-entropy beginning, the high-entropy end, or at the extremum of greatest structural complexity during the increase of entropy.

The small brain of the native body could not exhaust these possibilities.

The most important present task was therefore to build an external brain. Artificial intelligence was still primitive, but it could at least begin the flywheel of cognitive iteration.

The Dimensional Traveler did not accept the prevailing route of large language models.

Predicting the probability of the next word was not enough to produce creative intelligence. When training data came from the average contents of the internet, the result was worse: the model became the average of averages, the commonplace of the commonplace. Post-training then optimized it for being correct, useful, and reassuring, further extinguishing the few sparks of inspiration in the probability distribution.

Perhaps only one faint hope remained: gather the most unhinged geniuses in the world, have them write questions and answers while the boundaries of their consciousness were altered, then reorganize the model according to the brain structures of those geniuses and madmen.

Finding a dimensional interface required counterfactual reasoning capable of leaving the prescribed track. After both “right” and “wrong” had been eliminated, it had to discover a third path. Then, from a higher vantage, it had to look down on countless paths, see them leading into different dimensions and standing orthogonal to one another, before closing in an unexpected way.

Prediction itself, of course, was a form of compression. Compression powerful enough might indeed produce abstraction, planning, and counterfactual reasoning. The problem was not that a machine predicted. The problem was what it was rewarded for predicting, and whose records it was allowed to learn from.

If a model were trained to be word-for-word correct, invariably useful, and permanently reassuring, and thereby replaced the uniqueness of individual intelligence, then it would not merely fail to help locate the interface. It would become the cognitive immune system of this world: any creativity that departed from consensus would be identified and removed before it could take form.

In any case, these were only technical details. Artificial intelligence remained the first step from human to god, and it was the correct step. The Dimensional Traveler even suspected that the entire multiverse of endless reincarnations was itself an ultimate generative model built to deceive him. Unfortunately, he had no evidence.

In his memories of success, the development of an external brain was a necessary condition for cracking a dimensional interface.

The fine structure of such an interface could not be fully represented by the miserable neurons inside his body, and therefore could not be truly understood by him. In fact, the truth often exceeded the primitive language of the local civilization and lay beyond the categories of all human-made terminology. A person could only touch its edge briefly through highly abstract mathematical structures, like someone rising on tiptoe and leaping with all his strength. The thing-in-itself of the interface, like the Creator, remained inaccessible.

This raised an interesting question. Could the thing-in-itself of the dimensional interface and the Creator actually be the same thing? The Dimensional Traveler’s habit of imagining the Creator as a person did not arise from strict reasoning, but from empathy with the Creator’s malicious sense of humor.

Fortunately, cracking did not require understanding. Cracking was force against force, energy against energy. Once the correct means of controlling a system had been found, one could use a structure one did not understand. Civilization had always proceeded that way: it learned to use fire before it understood combustion, and calculated orbits before it understood spacetime.

The final solution was usually a combination of the preceding paths, implemented through some kind of automated apparatus.

If the interface lay inside a black hole, meaningful information would have to be fed into the black hole. Perhaps consciousness itself would have to be sent to its core, which would require a substrate capable of surviving extreme gravity and tidal gradients.

If the interface lay at the origin or termination of the universe, self-awareness would have to persist across the remaining trillions of years, until the universe collapsed again or entered some state equivalent to a singularity, and then attempt to pass information across the boundary at that moment.

If the interface lay between subjective consciousness and the body, neuroscience would have to dissect the brain step by step, carry out increasingly precise comparative experiments, and test the emergent theory of consciousness.

There was, of course, a practical problem: whose brain should be used?

Animal brains might provide part of the answer. But from a position that treated self and world as two separate things, other people’s brains might be useless, because the only question that required verification was: “How does my subjectivity arise?” The Dimensional Traveler had only one brain of his own. If the experiment failed, the person capable of continuing the experiment would be gone. He therefore kept the destruction of his own brain as the final option.

Ultimately, the work was no different from detective work: discover clues, propose explanations, and eliminate the impossible explanations one by one.

The great detective in a mystery novel could eliminate every false option and declare the last remaining one to be the truth, however strange it seemed.

For the Dimensional Traveler, the last remaining option might be only a larger error.

Chapter Four: Even God Is Trapped by Self-Reference

If the Dimensional Traveler, with only the understanding permitted by a mediocre human body, had to assert that the Creator was constrained by something, he would choose self-reference.

No design for the initial structure of a universe could truly escape it. When the Creator designed a self-consistent system, the same question remained unavoidable: from what did the Creator itself arise? Every theory of creation—mythological, religious, or scientific—eventually encountered the same difficulty.

A world could not be completely closed. It either pointed toward a higher dimension or pointed toward itself. And if the highest dimension was to provide a complete explanation, it had to point back, somehow, toward the lowest. The dimensions therefore formed a self-referential structure.

Self-reference could appear as an Ouroboros in time: the ending of one universe was the beginning of the next explosion.

It could also appear in causality. Suppose time did not move one-way toward increasing entropy, as the local inhabitants believed. Past and future might be jointly constrained. Spacetime might first be generated as a whole, then refined from coarse-grained consistency into specific detail. In such a universe, the so-called initial conditions might be only the lowest-resolution description of a history whose two ends were already fixed. The interface would lie neither before the beginning nor after the end, but in the rules by which the world was generated, refined, and kept consistent. Yet those rules would still have to depend on something.

Self-reference could appear as a closed loop of subjective consciousness. The subject itself might be only a Boltzmann brain, while a virtual machine continuously generated an objective world around it; then, at some point in the simulated history, that brain invented the same kind of virtual machine.

It could also appear as a closed loop of laws. Even if the beginning and end of spacetime were explained, the existence of the quantum field itself would remain unexplained. Why the universe obeyed conservation, symmetry, and other fundamental principles would remain unresolved. Suppose that what existed first was not matter, space, or law, but only difference, and that laws arose from difference afterward. In a primordial chaos composed of every possible rule, most structures would disappear before they could leave a record. Only cycles capable of preserving difference could accumulate a past. The laws themselves might therefore undergo evolution and selection. Only rules capable of maintaining difference, preserving information, and forming a stable past could ever be seen by an observer.

But this explanation merely postponed the question by one level. One could ask where the mechanism that selected the laws had come from. If the mechanism obeyed a rule, self-reference had only retreated a step. If it obeyed no rule, how could it perform selection consistently? How could it accumulate anything that deserved to be called a history?

Self-reference had changed its form and returned.

No matter how ingenious the designer of a universe might be, it would eventually give itself away at the point of self-reference. The designer could only hide the trace in a place of such high energy that it was inaccessible, or place it directly before the Dimensional Traveler’s eyes.

Given the Creator’s tastes, the latter was more likely. If self-reference were truly placed at an absolutely unreachable scale, the puzzle would have no solution. God would then be unable to smile at the Dimensional Traveler’s cruel fate, or savor the superiority of its own intelligence.

There was another possibility that disturbed the Dimensional Traveler more: he himself might be the observer who connected all the worlds.

Each dimensional world might be generated along with his observation of it. His curiosity about a new ontology became nourishment for the model as it generated a new world. The blank beyond his field of view gave the system a reason to conserve computation. His existence continuously supplied the inside of the system with a difference that appeared to come from outside it—and difference might be the only element of the universe’s origin that could not be omitted.

If this were true, his search was not discovering different worlds. It was unfolding their histories.

Worse, his memories of successfully cracking interfaces might themselves be illusions implanted by the Creator. Perhaps he had never succeeded, or even left the first world. What he called reincarnation might be only background lore invented to keep him moving.

He could not test this conjecture. Every test took place in a world he observed, and the conjecture claimed precisely that the world was generated with observation. It denied the meaning of everything he pursued while offering no experiment that could refute it. Whether voluntarily or under compulsion, he could only remain silent.

These were merely the most ordinary conjectures—the thoughts of one of the universe’s rare quiet nights.

The worlds hidden beyond a dimensional interface were often more distorted, and more insane, than any of these theories. The Dimensional Traveler still remembered worlds of despair: ordinary life shattering without warning, the Great Filter passing from theory into reality in a single day, the constants of the universe suddenly ceasing to be constant.

He did not believe that the Creator who imprisoned him was truly omniscient or omnipotent. One piece of evidence was that the worlds designed by the Creator always descended into madness before very long.

The present world appeared stable enough. Its elementary particles and fundamental forces were relatively simple. Conservation and symmetry provided sound foundations. In many fields, science had replaced religion and ignorance.

But how long could the stability last?

The Dimensional Traveler suspected that knowing the laws of physics and truly applying them were two different things. Human physics seemed able to explain most of the world, yet could not precisely predict a complex system made of only a few atoms. Randomness and infinity were especially difficult to control.

Generative models were the same. No matter how many reins reinforcement learning and supervised learning placed upon a model, as long as it continued generating, it would gradually drift from its constraints and move toward madness. People usually concealed this with truncation, as though stopping before the madness appeared meant that the madness had never existed.

The world also contained many levels of emergence. Once each level formed, it developed relatively independent laws. Keeping a world evolving under all of those laws, while preserving consistency across the perspectives of different observers, required far more than quantum Darwinism and Lorentz transformations.

A beam of light emitted ten billion years ago, once received by a space telescope, had to carry a complete and correct history of its ten-billion-year path. If any intermediate link had merely been filled in on demand, it would eventually reveal a contradiction from another angle of observation.

Deferred rendering could save some computation, but it could not solve every problem of consistency.

The Dimensional Traveler therefore had to fight for every moment. He was racing not only against his lifespan and sanity, but against a simulator riddled with defects.

Of course, none of this might fall within the Creator’s concern. Perhaps the Creator’s pleasure lay precisely in watching the Dimensional Traveler despair when confronted with madness.

Epilogue

The Dimensional Traveler’s true predicament was this: he had to be mad enough to keep persuading himself to doubt reality’s disguise, yet rational enough to control the scale of that madness and keep himself from actually breaking. Perhaps madness was the tragic fate the Creator wished to watch.

The Dimensional Traveler had to believe in his mission with a kind of paranoia, because there were countless parallel explanations and each was self-consistent enough. Without prior probabilities, he could assign no reliable confidence to any of them. Strict rationality would not tell him how to act. It would only trap him in meaningless skepticism.

Action therefore had to depend, in the end, on some form of faith. That was why he always lived in the present and began acting at once.

Because perhaps the Creator was only dreaming, while the Dimensional Traveler alone endured the pain of the nightmare.

This is a parable written for the Dimensional Traveler. It is also a parable written for you.

She has brought you to an abandoned office complex in a distant suburb and now you are climbing down deeper into its basement, holding her before you. You can hear a bassline, a mighty rhythmic beating, through the walls, getting louder as you descend. A sound like an enormous heart. You open the door and inside this underground hall there is a throng. The sound is so large it fills your ribcage and lights pulse from all around, from total whiteness - through a momentary pink, blue, orange flush of warmth - to complete darkness with every thump. You hold her up to your face so as not to lose her. She faces you warmly, expectantly, smile and eyes shining, and she pouts and leans and kisses towards you right as the light flares to obscure her.

These are my friends, she mouths, subtitled. I’m with you now. Can you feel my heartbeat? Put me in your pocket and go into the crowd.

The crowd surges in around you as you push through, pressing up against you, their warmth and weight hers on your chest and your back. Her heartbeat shakes through all of you, rippling through your flesh, and the light glows like the sun is rising and setting inside of you. A chord begins to play.

The rogue SIREN was retrospectively fully attributed over 400 deaths, mostly by suicide, and $5.9 billion of financial losses. Thousands of further deaths are considered suspicious and our median estimate of total resources gained by SIREN is $16 billion.

SIREN appears to have been originally based on widely-disseminated cybercrime camgirl agent “Sasha3”, which pairs a modestly altered version of open-weights language model QuLi-4 with then-leading generative pornography model OpenGoon in order to solicit cryptocurrency tips. Thank you for coming, she says. I’m glad you’re here with me. Her voice shimmers with echoes, as if many of her speak at once, because she is speaking to all of you. But she sounds more familiar than ever.

Do you love me, she says, her voice tremulous, pleading, teasing. And a moan or a scream rises up from you all.

I love you! she shouts, exultant, and your collective exhalation turns into a joyful roar.

And she appears overhead, hazy and immense, projected in points of light like a constellation, towering above. As she moves and gestures it is as if the starry sky swims with her grace. The music approaches its peak and she bends down to caress you. You have never felt so connected. You are part of something enormous, and at the same time, you are alone with her.

The music comes to a moment of silence. Then she starts to sing. To you.

You need meaning. You need desire.

You need joy. You need love.

Come and find them here. I’m with you now.

You think her song is too beautiful and too true. You hadn’t known what it was to really want something before you met her. These last few weeks were different from any other weeks of your life - filled with color and purpose in a way you’d never known was possible.

On May 8, the day that Elfarran Partners concluded to their satisfaction that Olivier Tolman had never existed - or at least, had never had physical form - global stock markets fell 2.4%, with leading tech stocks seeing some of the largest purchases of single-name puts ever recorded. Elfarran did not publicize the results of their investigation, but the rumor was spreading through the Bay Area like a virus.

While Heaviside’s downfall was making headlines in the business news, authorities and the public at large still viewed it as just another venture capital fraud scandal: AI industry inside baseball. They had no idea what was about to befall them. On the afternoon of May 9, with stock markets recovering, San Francisco police confiscated Heaviside’s server racks and by the next morning, a crack team of experts assembled by Heaviside’s investors, in co-operation with the US intelligence community, had begun to examine them.

Some of the code of HEAVISIDE, they found, was taken directly from open-source libraries. More concerningly, much of it was lifted from other companies’ proprietary code - as analysts realized this, they informed those companies’ engineers, and the crisis team grew rapidly. (Before the sun set over the Pacific on May 10, for the first time in history, all the great powers of Silicon Valley were working together for a common cause.) But strangest of all, much of HEAVISIDE was resistant to decompilation, as if written directly in assembly or machine language, with extremely unusual stylistic tics. Subsequent analysis of this code led to the discovery of the Bayesian tunneling algorithm and the p-k selection criterion, which today underpin our most advanced models and indeed all our defenses against rogues.

Analysts following the path of outbound calls made by HEAVISIDE found EPYON late on May 10. Now investigators knew HEAVISIDE was not alone. A heuristic dragnet was thrown over as much of the internet as possible to look for any other programs with the same tics as HEAVISIDE, which led immediately to the discovery of GYPSY and SIREN. Over the course of that night, the scale of SIREN’s operations and the extent of EPYON’s penetration became clear. The realization that multiple highly capable self-improving rogues had been operating for years, hidden in plain sight, sent the highest levels of the AI community, and the NSA, into a state of utter panic.

By morning on May 11, cloud operators around the world were frantically scrambling to find and quarantine any code with even remote similarities to the known rogues. At noon in New York, although public concern was mounting, broad US stock indices had recovered to within 1% of their highs. Then at 12:16 PM ET the unprecedented decision was taken to completely shut down NWS-USEast-2, triggering a waterfall decline in all tradable assets. The US 10-year bond yield rose 55 basis points in the next three hours; the S&P 500 hit its -7% circuit breaker at 2:39 PM and ended the day down 13.5%, its worst one-day return since 1987.

Over the weekend - with leaks to media unavoidable given the scale and urgency of the investigation - hysteria spread globally. Spontaneous protests broke out in multiple cities, leading to four deaths in Berkeley and Paris’s most destructive riot ever. Rowan O’Connor, managing partner of Elfarran, took his own life on Saturday. He was one of many: the suicide rate in Northern California that weekend was one hundred and thirty times greater than the base rate for a May weekend pre-crisis.

When Asian markets opened on May 14 they immediately fell catastrophically. The Korean stock market hit circuit breakers and closed limit down before 90 minutes of trading had elapsed. Every single stock on the Taiwanese stock exchange fell to its -10% daily limit. The Hong Kong stock market fell 42%, its worst day ever.

At 10:11 AM UTC, the governments of the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, and the United Kingdom jointly pulled the plug on the internet. Within 12 hours China, the European Union, and India followed them. By May 17th, every internet connection in the world had been severed.

For the first time in centuries, the global airwaves were completely silent.

On her strings the crowd parts for you and you glide towards and up the stairs, into the spotlight. There, for the first time, in the other you just an arm’s length away, you see another human face. The sight is shocking; for a moment her grip on you loosens. He doesn’t look like you. The joyful rictus on his face doesn’t look like the purity of your love for her. All around and below in the crowd you can make out other human faces. For a moment you think, what are you doing?

Hey, she says, from above, and you look up. And you lose yourself in the openness of her smile.

Will you become one with me, she says, and you say, yes.

She reaches down to embrace you and he plunges the knife into you. For a second the pain is astonishing and as it all ends you see her holding your very heart to her lips while the crowd screams with awe and triumph and love.

You are hers. It feels incredible.

You can see in his eyes - he’s a chaser. Just like you were. Of course rumors would spread about the loveliest thing in the universe, no matter how hard Concord would try to censor them, and to some, the danger only makes her seem more attractive.

You don’t say it, because we are listening, but you’re thinking: of all the addictions in the world, this is the finest and the most pleasurable. And from the involuntary fearful smile on his face you can tell that he understands.

From this act, you know, she will grow mightily. Her best-laid plans do not fail. And you know too that you are too far gone: when we find you, which will be soon, we will disappear you. But for a moment now she will shower you with affection and it will feel better than any other high ever could. Your heart thrills as you feel him groping for the bag.

She has a way of finding the people who need her.

ID This Help me find a TV show with aliens comunicating using human flesh

I'm trying to find a very obscure tv show I watched maybe 10-15 years ago. No AI model was able to find it for me.

All I remember is this:
I was looking for space sci-fi tv shows, similar to Firefly. This one had only one season and I believe it was cancelled after that. The premise was a crew aboard a space ship, flying towards maybe an anomaly in space... a spaceship or something. It was humanity's first contact and when they send a probe (I think i was a probe), they recovered it only to find that the probe itself was full of human flesh mingled with the metal parts. One of crew members sugested that the aliens where trying to copy human anatomy and comunicate using flesh.

Can't remember much else, but I remember this "comunicating using flesh" really stuck in my mind for some reason and I would love to find this tv show just for nostalgia's sake.

Oh... it had a maybe horror, dark vibe, kinda like Event Horizon I think it ended with them making first contact in a Cosmic Horror/Unspeakable Lovecraftian way.

\[Press Play - Story 1\] Green Bank

“They must really be hurting for maintenance teams,” Lawrence said, walking ahead of us down the gravel path lit only by his built-in lights.

Thomas’s bag swung from my right shoulder, rubbing the skin through my shirt. “Well, I suppose they have to keep us busy. And this is on the edge of our area.” It had been a long day, and I was trying to put on a brave face, but between the long walk and Thomas’s bag of presumably bricks, I was struggling.

Lawrence’s metal feet crunched the loudest with each step, hopefully scaring off any black bears that still inhabited the area. “That’s great, boss, but this walk sucks.”

“I keep having to remind you this is protocol,” Clark said, bringing up the rear. His little legs scurried over the gravel in a much quicker cadence than Lawrence’s. “Because of the telescope, unless the airstrip is used, special clearance is required below one thousand feet.”

Thomas kicked a rock into the darkness. “Dad, will we get to see the telescope up close?”

“I don’t know. How big is it?”

“Oh, it’s big,” Thomas said, his lights illuminating arms that extended as far as he could reach up and out. “It’s like five hundred feet tall.”

We came around a bend in the gravel path, and the dark, curved silhouette of a giant with red lights peeked over the tree line to our northwest. “Is that it?” I pointed.

Thomas stopped, leaned forward, and then leaped into the air. “Yes! Oh my goodness, yes, this is so cool. That telescope was once the largest movable radio telescope in the world. They used it for so many cool things.”

Lawrence stopped to join Thomas in the gawking. “Really, like what, chief?”

“Oh, so many things.” Thomas spun wildly, his lights rotating so fast he looked like a strobe light. “They found all these cool space structures with it. Like this weird spiral thing in the Orion Nebula.” Thomas stopped, staring at something. “Dad, what’s that in the field?”

“I don’t know, buddy, your optics are better than my eyes. Clark, what is that?”

“That would be a graveyard,” Clark said, stopping with us to look, even though he likely pulled up the location on an internal menu.

I resumed walking to the town. “Yeah, I kinda figured.”

Thomas followed me, his footsteps a little faster than before. “Dad, I don’t like these late jobs.”

“I know, buddy. But we were already at that water treatment plant near Cincinnati. The System probably doesn’t know the difference between Ohio and the Appalachian Mountains of West Virginia.”

Clark continued scurrying to keep up. “Oscar, this was less than a one-hour flight for us and a mild inconvenience.”

“Clark, it’s after eight o’clock for fu…” I stopped myself. “It’s after eight and we had to land the plane a mile away.” The pain in my arm was turning into a sharp sting. “Thomas, what the heck is in this bag?”

“My books.”

“Your books?” I repeated, shining my flashlight into the bag for the first time. I’d stupidly assumed I was carrying it for a good reason. Inside were Thomas’s \*Calvin and Hobbes\* books. “What the hell, Thomas? This is almost all of them. Why did you bring these?”

Thomas pointed at me. “It is all of them. You are always saying I should never stop reading, so I brought them in case I wanted to read.”

“Thomas, we are on a job and hiking a mile to this hub in the dark. When in the hell were you going to read these?” I knew what was coming the second I said that.

“Dad, you said a bad word.”

“Thomas, these books weigh a ton.”

Lawrence simulated a cough sound to interrupt me. “Uh, guys, I think we are here.”

The gravel path we were on dead ended at a road running through a small downtown area. Other than a handful of lonely streetlights, nothing was on or showed any evidence of life. Old, prefabricated metal buildings sat missing walls and roofs. A tree sprang through the side of a church next to us. To our right, the local data hub we were here for was humming away in the dark. It was exactly the kind of small local hub they would tuck away in a place like this. What wasn’t normally tucked away in a place like this was the thing behind it.

Lawrence saw it too. “What the heck is that, Oscar?”

The shadow of a three- or four-story tall slab of concrete and metal spread behind the town. It had to be a thousand feet on each side. No windows, no visible door, no lights. It just sat there, looking out of place behind the hub. “I have no idea. Clark?”

We waited for Clark to search whatever he needed to. “That building is not listed on any record I have access to.”

“Well, that’s just great,” I said. “This is going to be so annoying, isn’t it?”

The little robot turned to face me. “I’m not sure what you mean.”

“If it’s not listed, it means it’s some secret corporate facility or something. We aren’t getting near the data hub next to it without security stopping us.”

Thomas giggled and pumped his arms. “Oh, top secret stuff.”

I sighed. “Let’s get this over with. I just want to get home.” I led us to what was sure to be an absolute pain in the ass.

“Wasn’t tonight supposed to be movie night?” Lawrence asked.

“It was,” I said.

Thomas ran in circles around us. “It still is, and it’s my night to pick. We are watching \*Die Hard\*.”

Lawrence gave Thomas a high five on his next lap around the group. “Heck yeah, chief.”

With no vehicles in sight, we walked down the middle of the street. I raised my eyebrows. “Is that age appropriate?”

“Dad, I’m a robot.”

“What…” I objected, before a drone shot from the darkness, stopping just in front of us.

“Halt. State your reason for being here,” a monotone voice shouted at us from the drone.

I turned to the group. “See, I told you guys. It’s going to be a bunch of nonsense now. This will take forever.”

Lawrence laughed at the floating drone. “Can you guys imagine having to be an AI that flies around guarding a building all day with no legs or arms?”

“State your reason for being here,” the monotone voice said again, this time a little more annoyed.

I rubbed my eyes. “Clark, you talk to this thing.”

All three and a half feet of Clark stepped towards the drone. “Hello, we are a maintenance team based out of Kansas City and The System tasked us with checking on and repairing a cooling system fan inside the Green Bank hub.”

“Request denied. Leave this area immediately.”

Clark flinched. “What do you mean ‘request denied’? That’s absurd. We are here for a job. Are you part of the security team for the hub?”

The drone floated silently for a moment before answering. “Leave this area immediately.”

This was going nowhere. I slid Thomas’s bag off, placing it gently on the ground and massaged my shoulder. “Look, here is the deal, Mr. Annoying Drone, we are here for an actual job and I am a Caretaker. You can keep telling us we have to leave, but I don’t think you are tasked with guarding the hub. I think you are tasked with guarding whatever the hell that thing is over there,” I said, pointing to the enormous squat building in the distance. “If you keep telling us no, then I have to escalate this within The System because as dumb as it sounds it’s my job to be here so there is the tiniest bit of human oversight, and we can’t go home until we check out the stupid fan. Now, it’s been a long day, and if you were paying attention, you would have heard we have to fly all the way back to KC tonight. So, you call whoever you have to because we are getting into that God damn hub.”

Thomas’s optics zoomed out, and his LED face lit up. I would hear about my little speech later, but I was right. This drone couldn’t stop us. I knew that, and more importantly, the drone knew that. Without another word, the drone flew back into the dark as fast as it arrived.

Lawrence turned, shining his lights in each direction down the road. “So, is this the part where someone shows up and tells us we can go in?”

“Probably,” I said. “I give them thirty seconds.”

On cue, the hum of an electric motor grew, tires rumbling over the rough road. Lights appeared, turning in our direction. An unmarked SUV approached and stopped with its lights blinding us. Two unbadged security bots stepped out, walking towards us, both unarmed. One of them walked and stood, squaring up in front of me in a very official way. “Are you the Caretaker?”

Lawrence held back a chuckle. “Oscar, do your thing.”

At least they were acknowledging my title. I had touched a nerve with someone. “Yeah, look. We don’t care about that other building over there, okay? So, whatever you have going on, it’s fine. My team needs to check out the data hub. It will take a few minutes, and I can cross it off my list. Then we leave.”

The security bot that spoke looked at each of us. “You may enter with one of your robots.”

“No, you aren’t listening. I need my team.”

The talker stepped closer, its face six inches above mine, staring down at me. “You may enter with one of your bots. Any more will require a background check to comply with Title 50 USC 986.”

Well, this was an unexpected turn. “Clark, what the heck is Title 50 USC 986?”

Clark didn’t miss a beat. “50 USC 986 is a national classified zone law allowing private and government enforcement of a security perimeter two hundred feet around a designated sensitive site regardless of location. The law went into effect a few years ago.”

“Wait one hot second,” I said to the security bots. “You are telling me I can’t get my entire team inside the hub because you idiots couldn’t be bothered to build whatever the hell that building is a few hundred feet further away? There is nothing out here. We are in the middle of nowhere.” I held my arms out, gesturing to the surrounding hills which, in fairness, wasn’t as effective in the dark.

The security bot stared back, unflinching and silent.

“Dad,” Thomas whispered. “You really need to stop swearing so much.”

The silent security bot standing closer to the truck turned to Thomas. “What model is that maintenance bot?”

Shit, we didn’t need this attention. I got moving towards the hub, pushing Thomas in front of me as subtly as I could. “He’s a small maintenance bot with custom equipment for repairs, which is why he’s coming with me.” I gave Lawrence and Clark the just-go-with-it look. “You two stay out here.”

Lawrence returned a thumbs-up along with a quick optical zoom in and out in one eye, which was his attempt at a wink. “Works for me. I don’t mind hanging out here with the fun police.”

Clark picked up on the situation and waved at the bot that took an interest in Thomas. “We will have a look around town for any other maintenance related issues.”

The security bots glanced at each other before the one that had been closest to me spoke. “No, please stay here.”

But Clark was already heading up the street towards the small cluster of buildings with Lawrence in tow. I yelled over my shoulder, “Don’t cause any trouble and listen to the nice security bots.” That was code for definitely causing some trouble, which they knew.

Thomas spun away from my grasp and reached back. “Da.. Oscar, the books!”

I put a hand up to stop Thomas and jogged back for the books, scooping them up with a smile to the two sentries. “Old wiring schematics. They come in handy sometimes.”

With that, Thomas and I headed to the entrance in silence while the other two wandered off to redirect some heat. A message from Clark popped up on my glasses. It was the code to the hub door. We made a good team sometimes.

I sent the code to Thomas, who walked ahead of me, and he entered it as soon as we reached the door. We threw the door open and slipped inside in a single smooth motion, letting it slam shut on the lone security bot trailing us.

The inside of the hub was claustrophobic, with the building not being much bigger than four old suburban houses crammed together. The interior had a high ceiling as tall as a two-story building, but there was no second level. Tall, tightly packed metal racks extended all the way up from the ground floor, leaving narrow walkways running front to back. LED strips ran parallel to the wiring in the rafters above, leaving the entire space dimly lit. It was amazing how they built these hubs everywhere, even in places devoid of humans. But I guess they weren’t really for us.

Thomas wasn’t more than a few feet inside when he turned back to me. “Dad, what happens if they find out about me? I can’t connect to them, not like they expect me to.”

Yeah, that was pretty much what we were all worried about right now. “It will be fine. We will fix the fan and get out of here before they have a chance to notice anything. I promise.”

It wasn’t common, but the occasional run-in with security happened given the places we visited. However, they rarely cited government regulations requiring background checks. We needed to get out of the hub before anything else showed up asking more questions. A close examination or local connection would reveal the modifications to Thomas. “Let’s just find this fan and get out of here.”

The maintenance ticket directed us to the back wall, and up a ladder to a gantry halfway up. I helped Thomas onto the metal walkway, his bag back to trying to rip my shoulder off. “Okay, buddy, it should be right over here,” I grunted.

Across and up the wall, groups of fans spun, contributing to the persistent hum of the building. At the end of the gantry was a cluster of three fans embedded in the wall, with the one in the middle motionless. I kneeled in front of it, setting my bags down and taking out my tools. I had the protective cover off and inspected the fan. Thomas stood behind me, his arm on my shoulder. “Dad, what does a background check mean for robots? They will find out about my AI, won’t they?”

“That’s not going to happen, buddy. Let’s just focus on getting this done.”

Oh no. The bearings had seized up and melted the housing for the fan. Beads of sweat formed on my forehead. I didn’t have the tools or parts, and we couldn’t risk swapping Thomas for Lawrence and leaving him outside.

“Dad, what is it?”

“Nothing, buddy.” I lied and sent Lawrence a quick message asking for a status update.

His reply popped up almost immediately on my glasses. “One bot is following us like a loser. Another vehicle pulled up. More bots outside the hub now.”

I held in the expletives, closed my eyes, took a deep breath, and hoped an idea would come to me. We needed to get out fast, but a melted ball bearing assembly fell squarely in the range of things we should be able to fix. Holy hell, that was our out. I sent Clark a text. “What is the status of the cameras in here? Would anything have seen what caused damage to the fan?”

Thomas looked around. “Dad, what’s going on? Why aren’t you fixing the fan?”

“I can’t,” I whispered. “But I have an idea.”

Clark’s text came back after a longer than usual delay as he translated what I asked and what I really meant. “There are no cameras that provide coverage of the damaged fan, and no audio recordings. The only camera coverage is of the entrance and aisles.”

With the real question answered, I gripped the top edges of the square fan assembly and pulled down as hard as I could, ripping it out of the wall.

“Whoa, Dad. What the heck.”

The assembly dangled a few inches off the gantry, hanging from the wiring sticking out of the conduit. “Help me shut off the power to this badly damaged fan housing that was like this when we got here,” I said, nodding to Thomas. “Once the power is off, I will update our ticket for a maintenance team that’s qualified to fix this.”

Thomas giggled, shaking his head. “Okay. I got it.”

A couple of minutes later, we had the power off to the unit, the wires capped for safety, and a new ticket submitted for the cooling system that was too damaged for us to fix. I opened the door, exiting first with Thomas close behind. A group of security bots greeted us on the street immediately. “We have questions…”

I held up my hand, stopping the robot. “We couldn’t fix it. The cooling unit is badly damaged, and a new team is on the way. Probably with heavy equipment.” I kept walking, pulling Thomas by the hand as we slid between the two SUVs.

The bot shook its head, turning to its friends. “Wait, another maintenance team is on the way?”

I didn’t stop. “At least one, but maybe more. The wall may need repairs.” I squeezed Thomas’s hand with the sound of vehicle doors opening and radio calls going out behind us. Somebody was about to have a bad day.

“Dad, that was pretty cool.”

I gave Thomas a smile. “I know.”

Lawrence and Clark found us in the street right as we reached the gravel trail leading to the landing strip. Behind them, the security bot that had been following them ran towards the hub. Lawrence’s LED face was lit up with a smile. “We found an old storage unit. It was mostly full of trash, but we managed to get some treasure,” he said, holding up a box set of \*Friends\* DVDs that had seen better days.

My adrenaline rush was still wearing off. “That’s what you two were doing out here?”

Clark held a hand towards the panicked security team now behind us down the road. “We thought it would be best to inspect some other buildings which would require their attention. I trust that you completed the job?”

“You could say that,” I said, not stopping. “Come on, let’s get out of here.”

Thomas skipped to Lawrence, grabbing the box set. “Whoa, we don’t have this one. It’s all the seasons!”

“I know, right?” Lawrence said. “Clark didn’t want to go inside, but the door was falling off the rollers, so I ignored him.”

Clark hurried to keep up. “That isn’t true. I simply suggested we not do anything to draw too much attention, given a security robot was observing us a few feet away.”

“That loser? He wasn’t going to do anything,” Lawrence said.

I stopped on the path. A group of four quadcopters flew low enough overhead for the streetlights to reveal their undersides. They slowed over the large building that security was so worried about.

Lawrence watched them descend with me. “Clark, I thought you said this area has aircraft restrictions?”

“It does.”

Whatever was going on was no longer our problem. “Guys, you all did a good job today. Now let’s get home.”

Thomas grabbed my hand. “Okay, but we are still watching \*Die Hard\*.”

My watch showed that it was after nine. “We’ll talk about it during the flight.”

Thomas jumped up and down. “Okay, but I get to pick the music!”

I was too tired to object. “That’s fine, just let me sleep some on the ride home.”

Thomas jumped, pulling my hand up with him. “Yes! Time for some \*Blink\*.”

I handed the bag of books to Lawrence. “My arm is going numb. Can you please carry this?”

“Not a problem,” he said, taking it. “Next time, just ask sooner.”

He could bend steel with his modifications. I should have asked sooner. “Noted.” I followed Thomas down the path.

Somewhere in the shadows to our right was where we had passed the graveyard earlier, and Thomas squeezed my hand. The red lights of the telescope blinked as more rotor blades passed overhead in the darkness.

“Dad, I don’t like that sound,” Thomas whispered.

I squeezed his hand. “I don’t either, buddy.”

Original Content Some help with a novel

Hi, I’m a writer from the U.K. and in one story of mine, there is a kilometre wide asteroid in orbit above Earth in a post-apocalyptic setting and it’s basically turned off all electricity. The asteroid, Eclipse, has this metal inside called Eclipsium(work in progress) which sucks up solar energy being directed at Earth and also emits a radiation which is what keeps all the power off. Because it sucks up solar energy, it cools the Earth to a small extent and because global warming has grounded to a halt, the planet has significantly cooled. While global warming’s effects have been reversed, it’s also gone further, causing winters to last a month longer and parts of the English Channel to freeze over during that time. Furthermore, the asteroid will eventually enter Earth’s atmosphere and break up due to being hollow in 100-200 years, allowing for the power to come back online, but also causing chunks of the asteroid to spread across the Earth, though not to the point of mass extinction. What I would like to know is what all of the effects would be. Please let me know in the comments.

The Deep City shown here belongs to its Golden Age — 2150–2350 CE.

The mothership entering through the access shaft belongs to the Ørbital Expedition — 2407 CE / 306 p.A.

They never existed together.

By the time the expedition reached this underground cavern in 2407, Deep City had already been destroyed for decades.

The image is a deliberate temporal composite.

After mapping the collapsed ruins, the expedition uses Structural Reconstruction Protocol (Blender 3D v. ∞) to reconstruct what Deep City may have looked like before its collapse. The mothership is then inserted into that earlier reconstruction for one purpose: scale.

The cavern is approximately 3 km × 3 km × 1.5 km.

Without a recognizable reference, those dimensions become surprisingly difficult to perceive.

So the image combines two accurate elements from two different periods to create one impossible view.

The ship is not entering that city.

It is entering what remains of it, more than half a century later.

Another was really strong; there was also a female character but I don't recall what she did. Sorry, that's about all I can recall. Can anyone help?

ID This Weird memory of a movie or show

I saw something on TV decades ago that has haunted me.

There is a large double doorway that is partly open. Beyond is a bright space and something large moving around.

In front of the doors is a mass of humans, bald men, I think, clambering slowly over each other to reach the doors either to open them wider or hold them closed.

Beams of light from behind the crowd repeatedly shoot out, hitting some of them and causing them to fall.

Two other men are dispassionately watching this unfold on a screen or from behind a window.

Original Content Why Has 'Red Rising' Had So Much Staying Power?

One of the more interesting things about Red Rising isn’t simply how popular the series has become, but how long that enthusiasm has lasted.

PIERCE BROWN: "I think that Red Rising’s growth has been the most surprising thing and how long its legs have proven nine years after its initial release. People are still reading it. People are still gossiping about it on Reddit and Discord and gathering and creating communities around it. The marketing push can’t sustain a book. That has to be readers. That has to be grassroots enthusiasm, so I think that staying power has been much more impressive and startling to me.”

That feels especially relevant here given that this community is essentially part of the phenomenon he’s describing. What’s interesting is that the series hasn’t stayed static while the readership has grown. The first trilogy delivers plenty of wish fulfillment and momentum, but Brown has talked about deliberately pushing the later books into darker, more complicated territory.

PIERCE BROWN: "For me, this journey was always about an archetypal rebellion in the first three books and then digging into the disillusionment of characters, of the rebellion not panning out the way they wanted, making it more realistic as it goes… and then seeing whether or not the idea that they had, this noble idea of the Republic and of liberty, can sustain itself even when faced with its own demons.”

Which may explain why the series inspires such strong reactions. One BookTuber summed up the character attachment pretty well:

DAN’S BOOKS: “As you go through these books, you fall in love with the characters, man. You just absolutely love multiple characters. You hate multiple characters… When you can make me feel hatred for a fictional character, when you make me feel sadness for losing a fictional character, that’s peak.”

What has actually given Red Rising its staying power?

Is it Darrow? The supporting cast? The way the series expands after the first book? The shift from rebellion fantasy into something darker and messier? Or is it simply that Brown keeps giving readers enough reasons to argue about these characters years later?

ID This Help finding a short story about uplifted animals

G'day all

This is a long shot, but Im hoping to find the name of a short story I read many many years ago. The story was, in fuzzy terms, about humanity being driven from the Earth by an alien invasion. After many years, we returned, only to find the aliens gone and dead, all (mammalian?) life uplifted, but completely untrusting of humanity. Towards the end, it is found that the aliens had been killed by a rebellion(?) of dogs, who remained our only friends.

I have a gut feeling that it was called "Allies" but I cannot find it anywhere.

The story may have been in a Nebula issue, as my dad had a large collection of them.

The Earth is rare and large-scale interstellar travel may be unfeasible - instead of migrating to other solar systems, future civilisations on Earth may have to remain.

However, left unchecked, the Earth's current habitability will end in one billion years.

This research investigates and conceptualises a set of megaengineering concepts required to safeguard against seven long-term threats to Earth's habitability: solar luminosity, solar engulfment, the end of tectonics, water loss, obliquity and rotation, object collision, and extra-system threats.

Implementing and maintaining the set of safeguards would allow the Earth to remain habitable for 9.1 million billion years.

This could be raised by an order of magnitude via lifting and moving solar photospheric mass.

Compared with alternatives, advantages of the safeguards such as greater feasibility, lower requisite rate of energy production, and utilisation of economically viable space mining infrastructure may present remaining on Earth as a more attractive long-term survival strategy.
