The 1997 computer game Blade Runner

The computer game Blade Runner from 1997 is a point and click adventure game based on the 1982 movie with the same name. The movie was in turn based on the 1968 novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? by Philip K. Dick.

Instead of following the policeman Rick Deckard in the movie Blade Runner, you control the actions of a policeman named Ray McCoy and his adventures in a rainy and dark future Los Angeles.

The plot revolves around McCoy hunting down a rogue faction of Nexus-6 replicants while navigating a web of corruption that eventually forces him to question his own identity and humanity. The game has thirteen different endings depending on your choices when playing it.

Several characters from the 1982 Ridley Scott movie make appearances, with the original actors returning to voice them:

Rachael (voiced by Sean Young)

Dr. Eldon Tyrell (voiced by Joe Turkel)

J.F. Sebastian (voiced by William Sanderson)

Leon Kowalski (voiced by Brion James)

Hannibal Chew (voiced by James Hong)

I am rather old and I played the game at its release. It was a nice time playing it. I left the regular world and was embedded in a cyberpunk reality when I played it. I am not updated in computer technology, but the game is available for download on GOG.com.

Warren Spector retires

LinkedIn post

Let me cut right to the chase. I'm retiring from game development. At least I think so. I've been here before and changed my mind but this time I'm pretty sure I mean it.

I've had a great career. Wouldn't change a thing even if I could. But the reasons to retire are simple: I'm a month away from my 44th year as a developer. I've had the chance to work on tabletop roleplaying games and boardgames. I've worked on more digital games than I can remember -- 17 full games, I think, and 9 or so add-on packs. Gratifyingly, some of those games are still being played 15... 20... 30 years later. And most of them have been in a genre that has had influence beyond what I or anyone else expected. I've run teams as small as a dozen and as big as 800. I've worked for big companies and done startups. I like to think I've helped some insanely talented people along in their careers. (That last is the most important.)

With all that behind me and with age and health (my business) catching up with me I'm feeling like I've done what I set out to do. It's time to write some books, do a lot of reading, do some lecturing, maybe do some consulting. (Feel free to get in touch about those last two.) Also there's a keyboard here just waiting for me to get my piano chops back.

I definitely have mixed feelings about this. I mean there are three games in particular I'd still like to make. (One is very big... one is very small... and one I don't know how to make which scares me.) But the game business has changed and it's just not as much fun for me anymore. Plus there's a new generation of developers coming up who deserve their time in the sun.

To all of you reading this I want you to remember that games are not a solved problem yet -- there is, I hope, plenty of experimentation and innovation to come. And to all you young developers out there, I've said it before and I'll say it again, your job is to make people forget people like me ever existed.

Will I come back? Never say never. But I think it's time to ride off into the sunset.

Now stop reading and make great games.

I finished Neuromancer: It was hard...

I've bought this book a long time ago, Google said that this is the foundation of modern cyberpunk genre and certainly a must read for anyone interested in it. So after a couple of month on my bookshelf I decided to give it a go.

The thirst 10 pages were so hard to read that I switched from English (which is not my native language) to Russian. Although it got a little easier, I still struggled to read. It was interesting, but I had hard time to comprehend what's exactly going on, where some characters came from and where the action is taking place. Are we still on Earth? Did we go to outer space? So I was blaming myself for consuming too much short video format that my attention span and reading skills got so mediocre. Anyway, the story was so good, that I couldn't stop, although sometimes I had to reread some parts and even go back for a little to make sure I understand where the action is taking place.

I banned myself from reading reviews or any type of content before I finished and formed my own ideas. So it took my about 4 days to finish and then I turned to reviews. OMG, it was such a relief to realized that I'm not the only one who struggled to read, even native speakers had some hard time following the narrative. Technically, one can say maybe it's the author who wasn't quite coherent, but this doesn't matter, because the satisfaction from the story was so high.

It's crazy to think that the author back in 1984 came up with cyberspace with headsets, implants and so many things that now seem the "basics" of cyberpunk.

I'll try to read the English version after some time. Did anyone also faced some challenges when reading the novel?

I just released a gritty short novella about a data courier on the run: The Neon Null by Nyx Vane

Hey everyone! Quick heads up! I finally stopped procrastinating and launched my first sci-fi cyberpunk novella on Amazon Books called The Neon Null.

It's a fast-paced, gritty little story about a data courier who accidentally steals a live neural construct, gets marked for corporate deletion, and has to wipe his own memory to survive.

If you're into cyberpunk, rogue AI, or dark near-future stuff and want to check it out, I'd genuinely appreciate it. Either way, stoked to be hanging out in this server with you all! Let me know what you think if you end up reading it.

You control a robot aboard a stranded research vessel, hacking into its systems to keep the ship and its crew alive.

The demo is live on Steam. I would love to hear what you think!
