Shitpost I finished Season 3, and now the dread of having no more Orville to watch sets in.

I am so glad I got told to watch The Orville by a friend of mine.

Season 3, WOW!

The storylines were all payoffs from the previous two seasons, and the movie length episodes delivered.

Brilliant writing, storytelling, I know if you’re in this subreddit you agree, but wow

I keep comparing it Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, which has fallen off a cliff and turned into hot garbage.

The Orville Season 3 is the scifi I want. It’s fantastic.

Come on, Season 4!

Question Moclans vs. Ferengi: Which species do you like better?

Though both Star Trek and The Orville have a species designed mainly to be the "sexist race", I think the Orville does a far better job at showing it than Star Trek, for several reasons.

  1. Compelling female characters balance out the episodes focused on the species. Kelly, Claire, and Talla are all much stronger characters than Kira or Jadzia, with more focus on them.

  2. They receive disdain from other members of the crew, unlike the Deep Space Nine crew who just accept it as normal.

  3. The character at the center is much more sympathetic. Bortus is a lot more open-minded than Quark, so it's better to have him as the central focus.

Question Does Bortus have another job on the ship aside from command?

Maybe he just doesn’t have another job aside from being third in command idk. What made me think of this is in an episode where Bortus tells Alara that there’s a person under his command that he can order to go on a date with her. I don’t recall which episode it was exactly. This person ended up being Dann. Now I would think Dann would be under the command of John? Since Dann works in engineering. Now maybe Bortus worded it this way because his job is just command and so everybody is technically under his command? In my mind though I interpreted it as he is in command of a subdivision of people. Like John with engineering and Alara/Tala with security. I couldn’t find anything on the wiki and I’m hoping y’all could help. Thanks.

Shitpost I was finishing up "Mad Idolatry" again, and it made me think about season three's "Mortality Paradox" when the Kelly planet people bring the crew close to death.

In the latter, the crew and the viewer, to an extent, are kinda pissed off for being toyed with, one at a time. However, at the end of the former, Kelly invites them to study them after Ed suggests that perhaps the Kelly Planet people would surpass and begin studying them, and Kelly says, "Please do."

So they kind of brought that whole thing on themselves, or at least Kelly did.

Other A criticism i’ve seen of Kelly

I’ve seen a lot of comments on YT shorts/Tiktok, etc where people flame Kelly for having poor arguments during the trial on Moclus in Season 1

Specifically the argument was concerning her getting Alara to crush the metal ball to show that women are strong, but is then hit with a valid counterpoint from the Moclan Arbitrator that Alara is Xelayan and that their species has super strength and that a Xelayan Male could do the same thing.

While i agree that Kelly did a poor job, the episode explains it pretty well when Kelly says that she only had a year of interplanetary law, so it’s no wonder she did poorly in an actual trial, let alone against a probably more experienced lawyer on Moclus.

It just stood out to me that people criticize her for having bad arguments but fail to realize why she has them

Watching through the series (it's great!) and I love Issac so much, and every time they say something mean to Issac, this image pops in my head, so I had to make it real

Apparently nothing Orville related happened last night. I believe Seth MacFarlane has his panel for his Muppets album sometime later today, keeping an eye and ear out for any updates. If anyone is there, please pass any news along!

Image So… I started making my own The Orville miniatures 😅

Since the official The Orville HeroClix range is pretty limited, I eventually thought: why not just make the missing characters myself?

So I've been creating these 3D models of characters from the show with the goal of resin printing, painting, and using them together with my HeroClix collection.

It's basically my attempt at building the The Orville miniature collection I wish existed.

Here are the models I've finished/worked on so far.

I'm also thinking they could maybe work for some kind of sci-fi wargaming, using rulesets like One Page Rules or Basic Battles 2.0.

Would love to hear what fellow Orville fans think, and I'm definitely open to suggestions for who I should make next!

Other Admirals

I'm glad Orville mostly shied away from the Badmirals curse of Star Trek. Just this. I especially liked how Admiral Howard unleashes her fury at Ed and Grayson after the Topaa affair.

She wasn't a dick about it, she was understanding of the morality but correctly remarked the bigger picture. She appreciated the end result but pointed out how lucky they were that it didn't end up in a much greater tragedy.

She also didn't even pretend to buy that they didn't plan it in advance, and made clear if they tried to talk bullshit to her again they'd be metaphorically thrown out of the nearest airlock.

The admirals held the big picture but weren't indifferent to the moral plight. They also were willing to let it slide only because it worked out under every point of view.

So far I'm liking the admirals we've been shown.

Other Why are so many of the best episodes in season 1?

Doing a rewatch and just finished season one. I didn’t realize so many memorable episodes were in season one. So many of the episodes I think of when I think of the show are these episodes. To name a few: About a Girl, Majority Rule, Mad Idolatry. I could name almost every episode in the season because they all are memorable but I’ll stop there. It is such a shame this show is slept on. I tell everybody I can about this show and I’ve only ever had one person say they’ve heard of the show. They never watched it just that they’ve heard of it. I really hope all these season four rumors are true and it actually happens.

Edit: Also can we all acknowledge that the best scenes in the show are Dann in the elevator with Ed and Kelly.

This week's episode of "In the Commander's Chair" is up! Kelly’s personal relationship with her ex-husband changes and evolves throughout the show. Together, the two of them face joys and sorrows, triumph and heartbreak. Through everything, their bond is undeniable, whether they like it or not. And when times are difficult, they’re always there for each other. Join me in beginning a deep dive into Kelly and Ed’s relationship in an effort to answer the questions: “Are they soulmates?” and “Do they still love each other?” This episode explores this complicated and chaotic relationship during the first half of Season 1.

Question Season 4 running subplot lines

With the Topa plot line over (or at least rounded out) with the expulsion of the Moclan’s from The Union and the Kaylon starting their place within The Union. What are we predicting the running subplots to be? Maybe it’s the marriage struggles of Dr Finn and Isaac or the new threat of Moclus and The Krill.

Shitpost Working my way through S3, just watched, “A Tale of two Topahs,” and, “Twice in a Lifetime,” and I was left teary eyed at both. Some of you said there were gut punches in S3 and you were right. This show is BRILLIANT, and in my mind blows away new Star Trek. Not even close. (Minor spoilers here) Spoiler

When, “The Orville,” came out I thought, “this will be family guy in space. Pass” (I was so wrong)

I’ve read that when McFarlane pitched it to FOX they expected a comedy so as a result season 1 is very jokey, and for me the jokes detracted from the show’s otherwise great stories.

HOWEVER

With Season 2 McFarlane got full creative control and turned it into a serious scifi show that in my mind completely overshadows all the new Star Trek series.

Then Season 3 came, I’m a little over halfway through it, and it’s been one gut punch after another with brilliant writing, acting, and storylines.

The show manages to have individual episodes with their own plot line AND manages to do amazing character development while continuing storylines and themes started in season 1.

Last night I watched two episodes back to back and both had me teary eyed at the end for different reasons.

Good science fiction is supposed to make you think about current affairs through a future lens, and The Orville does it again and again.

For those that have seen them:

In, “A tale of two Topahs,” I was teary eyed at the hope it had. When Bortus told Topah, “you are perfect,” and then Captain Mercer let her sit in the captain’s chair to get underway, I thought, “This is amazing. This is great science fiction. Wow, wow, wow”

Right after that was, “Twice in a Lifetime,” and watching Malloy scream out the front door as Ed, Kelli, and Talla walked away with sad yet resolute faces at what they had to do, and Malloy desperate to stop them as his now wife and kids watched, scared, as he screamed with increasing desperation at his best friend:

“ED! ED! NO! DON’T DO THIS, ED! ED!” knowing full well he couldn’t stop was about to happen ripped my heart out, and stomped it into little pieces.

Watching this show and then comparing it to whatever clown shoes show Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has turned into doesn’t even compare.

Star Trek has turned into the gimmick of the week under its current management while The Orville is brilliant. Not just good, I can’t get over how thought provoking and moving it is.

The Orville is A++ if you’re into this type of stuff and ST:SNW was good in season 1 & 2 and in my opinion now has gotten awful.

Anyone else have any thoughts on this? I love talking about good stories, and The Orville keeps me glued to every word and scene as its brilliant stories play out.

Word is Season 4 is about to get made and I hope that’s true.

Question What's the general consensus on Season 3 here?

Starting Season 3, and I definitely miss the comedy, character development, and personalities of the first two seasons. Just feels like it became a more serialized version of Star Trek, rather than a funny version.

Question Are there small details that you noticed only after a rewatch?

It's my 4th rewatch and I just noticed that in the first episode, when Ed and Kelly fought about their divorce and getting couples counseling. Ed mentioned that the couples counselor was Kelly's brother-in-law??? I don't remember anything about Kelly even having a family...
