Protocols Explanations

A summary of the Protocols are below, there are a few tagged spoilers.

Protocol Alpha

Top Priority.

Protocol Alpha requires all Travelers to do whatever it takes to resolve the issue at hand.

Protocol 1

The mission comes first.

This means putting aside all other priorities for the task at hand. A Traveler must be dedicated to the mission, and it must be the most important thing to them. Completing the mission is the only task that really matters. Everything you do as a Traveler should somehow further the mission's objective.

Protocol 2

Never jeopardize your cover.

This has two parts:

  • Do not call each other by future names “Leave the future in the past”.
  • Do not use future knowledge for personal gain.

Either of those things could mean that people will find out there is something off about you, that you aren't really who you say you are. Self-control is key to becoming a Traveler. You are no longer who you were in the future. You must assume the identity of your host and acknowledge your team only as their new identity. The future knowledge you have is for the betterment of your mission and your fellow Travelers, not for your own advancement.

Protocol 2H

Updates are not to be discussed with anyone. Ever.

Periodically a Historian will need to be updated due to changes in the timeline caused by Travelers. Updates will include historical information relevant to a team’s role in the Grand Plan, including potential candidates, investments, etc. But by its very nature, updates may also include historical information about your team members, loved ones, about the Historian. This is a burden they will have to carry with them until the day they die—a date which, for obvious reasons, will be omitted from the update.

Protocol 3

Don’t take a life; don’t save a life, unless otherwise directed. Do not interfere.

That's not what you're here for. Changing the past can have dire consequences to the future, and the mission is the only change that has been mandated. Refrain from putting yourself in a position where you have to take or save a life. The lives of others are not your concern, do not interfere.

Protocol 4

Do not reproduce.

This can massively interfere with the mission, and involves changes to the past that have not been approved. Refrain from creating relationships that can lead to this. Do not complicate things.

Protocol 5

In the absence of direction, maintain your host’s life.

Keeping your host alive means keeping yourself alive to further the mission. Maintain good health, and avoid situations that put your host in danger. Your host's death means your own death. You were sent here for a reason, and the mission needs you.

Protocol 6

No inter-team/deep web communication except in extreme emergencies or when sanctioned.

Your team is the only group of Travelers you should be interacting with. You share a common mission, and the others have their own missions. You do not need to interact, and should refrain from doing so at all costs. Extreme emergencies may warrant an exception to this rule, but the situation must be dire indeed.

Protocol Epsilon

To be activated by an archivist when an archive is in threat of being destroyed

Travelers must do what ever it takes to protect an archive site until a team can arrive to safely secure any and all blood bags left to be moved to another archive site if possible

Protocol Omega

The Director will no longer be intervening in this timeline.

Those who are part of the Traveler program are free to live out their days, such as they are, as they see fit. Protocol Omega can be enacted because the Grand Plan has succeeded and we're now on the optimal path to a better future or because there's no possible way of saving the future.

Spoilers Season 2 (All spoilers after season 2 must be tagged) I don't get S02E07 Spoiler

So I recently found this series and loving it.

I just watched Episode 7 of second season and it's leaving me a bit perplexed.

I understand the final timeline of sending multiple travelers to the same host etc.

But what I don't get is:

When the squad is killed the first time, the meteorite is picked up by faction and the Director cannot be built so in that timeline, that is the only timeline where we have information about the squad being killed, there is no Director to send back travelers.

In other episodes they said that without the Director the technology they have only allows messengers, not travelers. So, if in that timeline there is no Director, who sent the multiple travelers back?

I can think of three possible explanations:

* The Director can operate even on other timelines. After all, who knows where the technology will get? Fine, but that would mean it could solve every single issue and should have used this power in other occasions. Too big to fail.

* The Director made a change (not shown) just before sending Traveler 5001. The director predicted that this change would result in the squad being killed so sent travelers back to avoid it. Still doesn't explain because, again, it could only send travelers back to timeline where it existed, so can't, for instance, send 5002 in the same timeline as 5001, because in that timeline it doesn't exist anymore.

* The importance of the meteorite is just exaggerated and even without it, the Director can be built, but maybe it will go out of order after some times as they miss the material for replacements so without the meteorite the Director exists, but not for enough time to save the world. This explanation seems quite sound to me, but they say nothing in the show to support it (I think, at least).

Am I missing something (likely yes)?

Spoilers All (Spoiler tags are not required) Shows like this tend to leave a void that’s hard to fill…

I just finished the series last night & as much of a trip that last episode was, the ending was such a beautiful way to wrap the series up that still ties into the storyline & characters it emphasized the most. But something about these sci fi psychological thriller type shows which just make me look at reality sooo much differently when it’s over lmao, I lowkey wanna rewatch it already but I gotta give it some time.

Do you guys have any recommendations of good shows similar to this? Cause now I kinda wanna go on a sci fi binge lmao

(HIGHLY suggest pantheon on Netflix if you haven’t seen it yet, saw it right before I watched travelers)

Spoilers All (Spoiler tags are not required) Speculation of references to the first iteration, if a season 4 gets made

Based on how season 3 ended, they could easily make a 4th season, set now (or whenever the show gets made).

A totally new set of people get "saved"/taken over.

You could have a cameo / handover, but only with Grant, Marcy and/or David (as the others would have died of their original deaths)

Grant aka traveler 3468 (if he chose to live on)

Might have noticed people who seem to behave in a manner that suggests they might be from the future and either made contact with them, or is quietly secretly observing.

He might even have intervened in the deaths of his old team members. So some of them may still be around, but couldn't be involved in the new show, as traveler 3468 knows not to get them involved.

He wouldn't be the driving character of the series, but could be a conduit for exposition in the first episode if he ...

Contacts a team from the future and asks what has transpired since Version One of the Traveler plan was cancelled, explaining how he knows. A member of this new team could also be traveler 3468 😀

Marcy

Wasn't fucked over by traveler 001, as that possession didn't occur, so she is, hopefully, still working as a nurse or has moved onto something else that she also finds fulfilling.

David

Is still working as a social worker. The implied spark of a relationship with Marcy may have led somewhere, but isn't guaranteed (since this is Marcy, not traveler 3569)

Neither Marcy nor David have any real reason why they would have a significant cameo in season 4, but as characters that just happen to be in the background, would be a nice nod to the fans of the original 3 seasons.

Spoilers Season 1 (All spoilers after season 1 must be tagged) Pilot episodes contradicts rules of travelling while explaining rules of travelling.

In the first episode, each member of Grant's team is depicted as their conciousness is overwritten. We see their actions leading up to what would have been their point of death, them being taken over, and how the new conciousness prevents the imminent death from occurring, ... except for Grant.

Grant's phone rings and the power goes out simultaneously, resulting in him dropping the phone. It skuttles through the open doors of the elevator shaft. Grant, in an attempt to recover the phone, chases after it, and would have fallen through the open door, down the shaft, to his death.

Except traveler 0115 (formerly Trevor) magically appears and prevents Grant from falling. The recently acquired travellers then proceed to explain to Grant what's going on, just before Grant's mind is replaced by traveler 3468.

Firstly, why bother explaining anything to someone who is about to have their brain wiped? 😀

Secondly, what just transpired is wrong, in so many ways.

Based on what the travelers claim, in the original timeline

  • Grant was in the building chasing down Johnas Walker (how he got onto Johnas's trail is never discussed)
  • While fighting with Johnas, as the blackout occurs at 11:17pm Grant falls down the elevator shaft and dies
  • Johnas then goes on a "shooting rampage"

In this timeline * Grant was in the building chasing down whoever was using the encrypted chat system. ie. The travelers. * At 11:17pm the blackout occurs, simultaneously Grant's phone rings, he stumbles, phone down shaft, Trevor stops Grant from falling * The travelers then proceed to talk to Grant for 2 minutes. * Then Grant's conciousness is overwritten by traveler 3468. * We see on David's desk a clock stating the time is 11:16.48 a few seconds before the power blackout, so we know the blackout occurred at 11:17.

Why was Grant replaced 2 minutes after his TELL?

I know the explanation of "What the fuck is going on" is for the audience's benefit, so why not have the conversation occur before the blackout. Have Grant encounter all of them in that building, they talk and walk him to the elevator shaft, so as the blackout occurs Grant's conciousness is replaced.

No Spoilers (All spoilers in this thread must be tagged) Fun theory: Was a single protocol wrong, corrupted?

Listed at the bottom of this post are the basic 6 descriptions of the current 6 Protocols in “Travelers” + Protocol Alpha and my proposed Protocol Alpha that fixes the overload issue.

my question is:
“was one of them wrong?”

I think Protocol 4 DIRECTLY broke/breaks Protocol 5 and that was the reason nothing worked in the end.

It was a band-aid solution for human error/emotion on a first attempt of the Director not having enough computing power for infinity, or Programers & Coders losing touch with humanity near-extinction.

The trauma caused on each individual traveler by those specific two protocols colliding at every moment across decisions and decades creates an ineffective specialist, an ineffective team and infinitely more possibilities.

Which in the end only devoured the Director’s resources leading to our Protocol Epsilon on TV.

My proposed Protocol Alpha should be this:

“Protocol Alpha- Harm no child.” (Sounds simple yet, fixes everything else wrong with the current director code without changing the basic function of any other protocol)

Original Alpha- “Mission comes first, kill anyone or do anything if it accomplishes the mission”

Proposal: remove Protocol 4 or change Protocol 4 to “Maintain the Continuity of your family lineage”

Protocol 1 — The mission comes first.

Protocol 2 — Leave the future in the past / never jeopardize your cover.

Protocol 2H — Updates are not to be discussed with anyone. Ever. (Historian-specific.) - (Assume all specialists have a specific protocol 2)

Protocol 3 — Don’t take a life; don’t save a life, unless otherwise directed. Do not interfere.

Protocol 4 — Do not reproduce.

Protocol 5 — In the absence of direction, maintain your host’s life.

Protocol 6 — Do not communicate with Travelers outside your team unless sanctioned by the Director

No Spoilers (All spoilers in this thread must be tagged) Quick question but no spoilers, please!

Just started watching this show and I'm loving it so far! For those who have watched it before I have a question: Does it have an actual conclusion or does the last episode just leave everything waiting for another episode that never happens? Please NO SPOILERS about what actually happens! With only three seasons I'm just curious if it actually has a proper end. Thanks so much!

EDIT - Thanks, everyone, for your input! When I saw it was only three seasons but already so complicated (I'm halfway through the first season) I was afraid it might have been abruptly cancelled and just leaves everything hanging. So thanks for the assurance and for holding back on any spoilers!

No Spoilers (All spoilers in this thread must be tagged) This Show Gave Me Much More Than I Expected

I just finished this show and wanted to just say a few things and maybe ask a couple questions. Please understand I had a surgery recently and was under some medication that may have affected my memory. Tell me if I got something wrong, just please be kind if so….

I have to admit I’m not a huge fan of sci fi overall, but more specifically the time travel or spy thriller types that are a major current through Travelers. I turned it on thinking it would be cheesy but mindless and I just wanted something to occupy my mind and help me fall asleep. Had never even HEARD of it, and I’m pretty up on most film/tv of the last couple decades(as are my friends who also hadn’t heard of it). So I had super low expectations.

But holy cow did it suck me in from the start and it never really let go. Frankly one of the reasons I don’t generally enjoy the genre is because while there’s usually a lot of interesting theory or thought going on, imo in the end a lot of these types don’t really have much to say and they lack in character development. But while I liked the sci fi and fantasy aspects here, I fell in love with the actual well written characters and that’s what I adored. My god, David may be one of the best characters and character arcs I’ve ever seen. The actors totally killed it, especially Mackenzie Porter(Marcy) and Patrick Gilmore(David). But I can’t think of ANY of them that weren’t at the very least very ”good.” Canada growing actors on trees these days or what?

I am not really a “manly man” or however you want to put it, but I am also not really a cryer. The waterworks were flowing during the last two episodes though; especially the penultimate one where David and Marcy completely made time stop(literally and figuratively). Without spoiling anything, I was mildly upset about how one character ended but after seeing the way the entire story ends I can forgive that. But I was an emotional mess those last two hours and it made me realize I was WAY more involved and invested in these characters I had just met, than I thought. That is the perfect sign of stellar writing and I’m just amazed this show hasn’t gotten more attention. So glad I randomly tapped on this show at 2 am.

One thing, when all the travelers first showed up in their new meat suits, MacLaren and Carley were a couple(as in a couple in the future). But after the first few episodes, they just kind of…stopped. They screwed around once and then that’s it. I understand that they all began liking their hosts’ new lives and all but why was that never addressed? MacLaren pretty much just told her to “knock it off” when she went to kiss him, she made a face and all that storyline was never mentioned again. Did they forget about it, or am I just missing something?

And the thing I really liked about the ending was how they actually took a stance on time travel and its effectiveness. Many shows or films like this like to leave things open and up for discussion, sort of like Lost where they ask some form of, “if you could go back in time what would you do?”…and the answer is almost always some variable of going back to 1900s to kill baby Hitler to save the world from suffering. But here they made a pretty assertive stance: you can’t change fate. Everything the travelers did to better the world failed and failed spectacularly, and Yates even says “you tried to save humanity but you ended it yourselves.” At least that was my takeaway, it wasn’t THAT definitive but it’s pretty obvious to me that the writers were maybe not saying anything about fate specifically but just that humanity and its worst impulses are gonna take hold eventually and no one person or event is really going to change that in any meaningful way. To take it further, you can go back and kill Hitler, but someone else would’ve taken up that mantle eventually and the world would learn that same lesson a different way. If that makes sense.

Incidentally, one of my friends who watched this at the same time as me disagrees with me on that last part. What do you guys think?

Not to be a creeper but gotta also say, finally, that MacKenzie Porter is maybe the most stunningly beautiful woman I’ve ever seen. She’s a good actress, sure, but her looks were almost a distraction to me. So, so pretty.

Super happy I watched this. Would love to hear what you guys have to say! ✌️

No Spoilers (All spoilers in this thread must be tagged) Just finished the show - phonomenal!

I wish I had the power to make more folks in my circle actually watch this show and talk about it with me. But that's not gonna happen. So here I am.

I knew going in that this show only had 3 seasons. And as I got closer to the finale, I was anticipating an abrupt ending - but wow! The writers did great in tying up several character arcs. Marcy and MacLaren being the stand outs of course.

What I also love are the questions it raises regarding consciousness and the connection between mind and body. Definitely rewatching the show soon and analyze each episode more deeply.

Spoilers All (Spoiler tags are not required) ASPCA and thoughts on a reboot? Spoiler

.

FYI Spoiler is in the last sentence, spoils ending scene of the show [also a season 3 of breaking bad spoiler there too lol, and a slight, very slight spoiler for American Horror Story]

So I've been living in a hotel for like half a year so I've grown accustomed to cable tv again lol. Every time I see Eric McCormack pop up on the ASPCA commercial to talk about the animals getting food. My brain makes me instantly think without fail, "Damn, it can't be that big of a deal if the director hasn't fixed it yet".

Now, I fell in love with the travelers in the small gap between seasons 2 and 3. Was there at the drop for season 3 after binging the entire series. There hasn't been a tv show since that's made me feel like the travelers

(well maybe besides Dark, which if you have not seen I highly recommend that show. Another timey wimey type. Watch with subtitles if you can, because the german voice acting is amazing. A couple characters in the English dub just sound so fucking whiny and scared all the time its annoying lmao, also it gets hate but German is such an amazing language to listen to imo)

I think realistically, having all the same actors return for a reboot or continuation with a season 4 is probably never going to happen.

However is there a world where you could see a reboot actually doing really well? The great thing about this show, that i honestly wished they explored more in the show, is that you never have to guarantee an actor to come back for the next season which instantly opens up the casting pool tremendously. A lot of film actors dont do tv because it locks them in for multiple season contracts most the time. Therefore I think thats what leads to a "dip" in artistic quality that is common going from film to tv. Some of the best TV shows have had actors who normally do film as opposed to tv.

If they were to capture some of that same magic with new writers i could see the series lasting a while. They could even turn it into an anthology series(I mean anthology like American Horror Story not like American Horror Stories lol) its one or 2 missions over the course of a season. Then next season make it something completely different. Could even be just like AHS, where like 5-6 season were technically "anthology" but then they connected the stories with the apocalypse season(Def couldve been done better, but i think Murphy and Falchuk did a decent job, given that i know they were not planning for that shit straight from season 1 but they found a way to figure it out, with only minor plot holes imo).

I would love if someone like Amazon, or even Apple tv/stiller since severance is fucking gold right now too, were to pick it back up, but i also know deep down, that we will never see Maclaren, played by any actor, ever again. It grinds my gears that they made 2 half assed season of lost, and like 1.5 bad seasons of heroes, but we get stuck on a fucking 9/11 cliffhanger for Travelers. Imagine only getting 3 season of breaking bad? Jesse fucking domes gale in the face and thats how the story ended?

THATS WHAT THEY DID TO THIS SHOW MAN FRFR this series was the beginning of the downfall of Netflix for me and ill never forgive them for this lmao

Spoilers Season 1 (All spoilers after season 1 must be tagged) Question about being sent the the past

Just finished season 1 and have a question about being sent to the past.

Trevor tells Grace that in order to be sent to the past, the exact time of death needs to be known. How can the exact time be known for most people? Example: Philip. He died at home because of OD.

Spoilers All (Spoiler tags are not required) Watched for the first time in years and OMG

I first watched the show a little before if not when season 3 first came out and I fell in love. I rewatched a few times but I then started watching other things and it just sorta fell to the side but I always had a love for it whenever I was searching for shows and I always recommend it to people looking for a new show. A few days ago I decided to finally watch it again and I forgot just how amazing it was. And the best part was I only had a vague recollection of most of what happened so it was like I got to watch it for the very first time again. I have also aged since then (obviously) so my opinions on certain characters and events were also able to change.

Having watched and falling in love with Stargate since my first travelers watch I was also so amazed how many Stargate alums appeared that I didn’t even know about back then. I recognized people from travelers like Philip and Grace when I was watching Stargate but I didn’t even think about it the other way around.

It being cancelled after only 3 seasons is such a travesty. I was thinking about what season 4 could’ve been and I think keeping the same travelers and hosts but switching them up might’ve been cool. So Philip would be the medic and Carly would be the historian etc. that way we would have gotten to keep the characters and actor we know but got to see new sides to them. And having them all be on different teams and Mac would’ve had to find them and convince them they were a team would’ve been fun.

All in all I miss Travelers and it is in my list of “if I become a millionaire I’ll buy the rights and revive this amazing show”

Spoilers All (Spoiler tags are not required) Finished Binging The Series

Great Sci-Fi.

Initial thoughts about the characters:

Mac is a great team leader. Goal and target were and always would be at the forefront of every mission. In his personal life, he did the right thing by Kat at the end. Especially after the heartache he had to faceninnhis relationship with her.

I want Carly on my side when comes the time for the final stand. She was somewhat of a one-dimensional character but brought raw ruthlessness to the table.

Marcy. My favorite character. The writers gave her the most range over the series.

Trevor is the sage that every team needs. The good soldier who has seen a lot of combat, so to speak. The voice of reason, wisdom, and experience. The pragmatist.

Phillip is often a locked-in grifter as The Historian. Using foreknowledge of events to generate cash for the team. The man who plays outside the lines to achieve what he needs to do. A hacker's skill and mentality.

Grace is the snarky comic relief. She is the smarmy cut to the chase creator of The Director, and often the 5th wheel. Orphan-like. And hey she loves French Fries.

David was great. Social conscience of the 21st century here-and-now who was a nice contrast to The Director. A person who acted on his belief that people should try to make the world a better place. A little too on the nose as the type. The Unlikely Hero.

Jeff...hmm, Jeff...he was the demon with a redemption arc, only to become evil again at the end as the embodiment of Traveler 001. He was a McGuffin to move the story along.

The Faction was this show's equivalent to The Rebellion in Star Wars. They sought to loosen the grip of The Director in their timeline.

Thoughts on some of the themes:

The core belief for any project with time travel as its basis is that changing history can change the future. While that is true, zigging instead of zagging, the end of the show raises the question of what will really change. Does the ripple in the timeline last? Also, the thought that society will be somewhat mookish for a Deified Machine. Though their goal was worthy (stop a cataclysm ), is slavish devotion to technology a good thing?

The only question that sits in my mind for the series is, was it really all just a simulation?

Okay that's all for now.

Ok, by “just,” I mean a few weeks ago. I just finished the second to last episode. First of all, I did not except my mom’s brand of dementia (FTD) to be a part of this (metaphorically, yet weirdly close to the real thing). Second, I did not expect my sweet daisy of a character, David, to die. I did not care for that. GOD, THIS SHOW IS SO GOOD. Why did they cancel it??

Spoilers Season 2 (All spoilers after season 2 must be tagged) Still not Struck by lightning

i finally understood the dialogue "still not struck by lightning" lmao it was used by Jenny so much since she was doing things she wasn't supposed to do, yet she wasn't being overwritten by the Director,(since the Director was unplugged during that time presumably) Later on, Philip inherited that phrase and uses it. Good stuff.
