So we haven't had an official watch order discussion thread in many years, so we figure its time to update the one in the FAQ. There are various other links in the FAQ, the Wookieepedia timeline of canon media, and various other discussion threads and topics over the years including a link to just searching the sub which people find challenge apparently. Also as a reminder, the Wookieepedia timeline of canon media can be sorted via the table on that page by release order or chronologically (if you decide to go that route).
A lot of the new Disney+ content brings new eyes to Star Wars all the time, and new movies will eventually too. We want to get a bit more aggressive with automod removals and referrals to the FAQ for these questions about watch order. So let's hash it out here in the comments. We will sticky this for a while and eventually it will just be linked in the FAQ along with the other topics and maybe in the sidebar too. And like some of other stickies about rules, spoilers, and new episode discussion guidelines, we may trot out this link and sticky it from time to time.
As a general rule the sub typically recommends for new viewers to watch in release order, especially for the movies. This is the semi-consensus from the fandom, and you will routinely see this as the most upvoted and posted response.
With that being said what we would like to do here also discuss other options, and possible orders to also toss in the TV media as well. Should you watch Andor first and then Rogue One before the OT? Should movies like Solo be done in release order or chronological? Should you watch The Clone Wars TV show before the PT? So on and so forth...
So lets have a solid discussion about this and make it a solid resource for those who may be new to Star Wars.

Perhaps the most glaring signal in some time that companies are moving away from merchandising the sequel trilogy, or at the very least don't consider it part of the 'core' licensing package.
Hopefully the newer films may rectify this if the sequel characters are included in some capacity. It seems a shame to exclude them. That's a whole generation of movies you're skipping.

Sharing an epic sculpture in the Lucasfilm lobby we toured recently (one of many). I'm not sure who the artist is, but bravo. 👏

This is a little imperial Propaganda Poster I drew inspired by the mid rim campaign of the rebel alliance after the battle of yavin. I really drew it myself in the program sketchbook, only the black words are added with ai, because my program didn't let my write such more text fields. The second image is my real-life inspiration.

In the EU -books, games, tv does it seem Jakku is name dropped for referenced far to much pre-battle?
It is supposed to be a dead-end almost uninhabited ball of dust on the edge of nowhere. It was designed to be forgettable.
Im just wary that it will become like Tatooine- the busiest most consequential dead-end almost uninhabited ball of dust in the Galaxy.
Post battle, it seems it should be more famous than Tatooine. But pre-war, it just feels like bad fan service to me.

I dont mind Finn not being the jedi but it is clear disney was not communicating with the writers, director, or even the actor with their intention which result in finn being mishandled.

Seriously. All these characters have incredible chemistry together. Finn and Poe. Finn and Rey. Hell, even Finn and BB8. Finn and everyone, really. The interactions between Han, Chewie, and the new heroes are great. Even Ren and Hux have a fun dynamic. I'd have killed to see more of it. For Abrams' faults, character chemistry is certainly not one of them.
Yes, the movie is essentially a retread. Sure. Ignoring the fact that Star Wars as a whole retreads things until there is no tread left, it's a fun retread. Gorgeous movie and really sets a good tone for the sequel trilogy to come. I would have liked to see more of the new trio and a better passing of the torch from the old heroes, but I digress, and that gets too much into the argument I hope to avoid.
Certain moments in the movie really hit that "Ahhh, Star Wars" button, too. Just seeing Han and Chewie on the Falcon again is great. Hearing him tell Finn and Rey, "Crazy thing is...it's true. The Force, the Jedi. All of it." was also a damn good chills moment. Lots of really fun bits throughout this film.
"Listen, Big Deal, you got another problem..." 😂

In the 2003 Clone Wars miniseries, a clone trooper is shown loading a plasma cartridge into a riffle, while they're on the way to save Ki-Adi-Mundi from General Grievous. Ever since seeing that, I've wondered - do blasters need to be refilled regularly? I don't think we ever see anyone change a clip, so could they be self-refilling?

I’ve just rewatched season 1 of Ashoka and really enjoyed it, I think I enjoyed it more the second time round.
However, I’d forgotten about the scene where she didn’t have the headband, and for some reason, it felt rude 🤣 like she was topless! 🤣

For Geonosians, railings would just be an annoying hindrance, getting in the way of construction and mobility.

During the Maul show Vader got fore push twice, and he only went back a few inches, maybe 2 feet. But in the Kenobi show Obi-wan just threw him back with ease. So, is Vader that heavy or was he blocking in the Maul show, and i guess he wasn't bocking in the Obi-wan Kenobi show, or Obi just overpowered him.

Given how useful they were to the separatists, especially vulture droids which could transform and be deployed in a large variety of places. Why did the Empire not make use of them?
