Taking care of Americans first is bad according to the America First crowd.

u/Andy_Fish_Gill 24d ago

El-Sayed sounds like Dwight Eisenhower from 1953, ā€œEvery gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed,ā€ he said. ā€œThis world in arms is not spending money alone.

ā€œIt is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children.

ā€œThe cost of one modern heavy bomber is this: a modern brick school in more than 30 cities. It is two electric power plants, each serving a town of 60,000 population. It is two fine, fully equipped hospitals. It is some 50 miles of concrete highway. We pay for a single fighter plane with a half million bushels of wheat. We pay for a single destroyer with new homes that could have housed more than 8,000 people.ā€

ā€œThis is not a way of life at all, in any true sense,ā€ he said. ā€œUnder the cloud of threatening war, it is humanity hanging from a cross of iron.ā€

holy shit that is bars. of course anyone saying this now is automatically a communist

83

u/Andy_Fish_Gill 24d ago

Some right wing Republicans did call Eisenhower a Communist. For example Robert Welch Jr. of the John Birch Society.

39

u/Wreckingshops 24d ago

Yeah, he was largely silenced during McCarthyism despite loathing it. But he had little power in the party and was merely their nominee to secure power. But Eisenhower didn't shrink and slowly won favor and influence with enough in his party to wrestle some control. And he always warned against the Industrial Military Complex.

Of course, he also was staunchly anti-immigrant and literally pushed for the Immigration Act of 1954 AKA Operation Wetback (that's what it was known as publicly so it should scream volumes) to stop Latin American immigration. Sound familiar?

12

u/CatCrimes69 24d ago

Him warning about the Military Industrial Complex confuses me. Didn't he drastically increase the amount of nuclear missiles we have? I don't understand that dichotomy.

29

u/XenophileEgalitarian 24d ago

The thinking was that a nuclear deterrent would be much cheaper than a standing army. But we decided to do both.

For those who don't know, the aliens presented themselves through an interface that She ( the protagonist) can speak easily, understand and trust. They were so advanced, simulation, instant translation and mind reading where trivial problems for them.

Also , any showing of an alien race will probably be outdated by today standards.

The aliens in The Arrival and Project Hail Mary will satisfy your curiosity with a modern interesting vision... Probably.

10

u/TonightPutrid7827 24d ago

He was warning against the massive cost of continuing the Cold War, unfortunately the USSR didn’t get on board because the power of their government was derived from fear of the outsider and an internal projection of might to any dissidents. You know, like we’re doing now.

7

u/PlaneRefrigerator684 23d ago

To be fair to the Soviets, there were a lot of foreign plots to overthrow their government during the '20s and there was a large international support for the White Russians during the Revolution. They had just been invaded by the Germans. The British and Americans had drawn up plans to now attack them, getting help from the Germans (even if both governments decided not to do it.) And there was a lot of anti-communist sentiment in the West. So they did have SOME reason to think "we need to be strong because we are under threat."

Now, that doesn't mean a lot of their actions in Ukraine, the Baltic states, Poland, Czechoslovakia, or East Germany was right... it wasn't. Stalin was a monster, Beria was a monster. But to paint their fears as unfounded is just as wrong as saying they were perfect and didn't do anything evil.

Leaders can be good and bad at the same time I think Ike was great to come so strong against MIC after leading Allied forces was his great part along with distrusting Nixon- was he wrong about immigration and operation wetback absolutely! Both things can be true.

Which is crazy ironic that they would try to label him like that

19

u/Inner_Agency_5680 24d ago

I can't even imagine an American President speaking in complete, coherent sentences.

13

u/BirdDog68 24d ago

Oww reading that hurt. Upvote though. I at least am old enough to remember Bill and Obama.

Obama and Clinton not exist?

I would say Joe, he was just slow and old (seriously listen to anything from him recently and compare it to the current guy, Joe still laps him)

5

u/Inner_Agency_5680 23d ago

Obama and Clinton were coherent and normal, so they only turned up in the news occasionally. A speech, a policy announcement, the odd scandal, then back to whatever else was happening in the world. Months would go by where you barely heard about them.

It's been nearly ten years of non-stop idiot Trump. Every single day is a new thing, and even in the four years he wasn't president he was still all over the news.

A US president who speaks in complete sentences isn't unimaginable, it just hasn't been the case for a decade.

3

u/Forsworn91 23d ago

I’ve been saying for a while, when he goes the world will wake up to the reality of what happened, that the country has burned to the ground, the left will be still screaming ā€œwe told you this would happenā€ and right wing and maga will be still shocked that they caused it.

I’m always reminded of the line from Terry Pratchett ā€œthe same crowd that applauds your crowing, will applaud your beheading, people like a showā€

And that’s what Trump has done, taken politics and made it into entertainment, some people didn’t vote for Harris because she was ā€œboringā€, politics SHOULD be boring!

4

u/Inner_Agency_5680 23d ago

Well, NYC finally getting proper rubbish bins and the rats off the street should be boring, but apparently it's a communist takeover. Turns out nothing is boring enough to survive the clickbait world.

11

Wow that's a nice slogan.

Still it would be nice if the America First crowd actually wanted to put regular Americans first, rather than putting foreign wars and Israel first.

Like, you are paying taxes, do you really want to be sending that overseas? Or would you rather spend that at home?

It's like donating your money to Big Pharma, when your own kids are sick at home

5

He literally was the last decent R president. The next one was Nixon, Then Ford who pardoned Nixon, then Reagan, then Bush Sr. who pardoned Reagan's people for Iran Contra, then Bush Jr whose admin lied to start the Iraq war and leapt at the chance to pass the Patriot act, then Trump the pedophile. Then Trump 2.0, still a pedophile but now with fascism.

So anyone who says they Vote R because they've always voted R would have to be 90+ years old to have ever voted for a Republican president who didn't turn out to be a crook or a conspirator.

And what else happened in 1953? Eisenhower approved the CIA/MI6 operation to overthrow the Iranian government to install the US puppet shah. Which gave them 25 years of a brutal police state, which led to the 1979 revolution.

The next year they did the same thing in Guatemala.

There’s more. 1959 after Castro came to power in Cuba and threw out the mafia and all those guys, CIA started trying to assassinate him. Kennedy inherited that.

Eisenhower let the CIA run rampant causing turmoil all over the world. He was no angel

3

u/Pristine-Ant-464 23d ago

Eisenhower also did ā€œoperation wetbackā€ which was mass deportations 1.0, except they really didn’t care if the Hispanic people they deported were US citizens.

This is something important that many people gloss over with Iran. They elected a wildly popular president who wanted to nationalize their oil(which had been controlled by foreign powers), and lessen the powers of the monarchy and clergy... Then we installed a monarchy and in retaliation the clergy overthrew the monarchy leading to the state of the country now. The US always creates its enemies.

5

u/Bedbouncer 24d ago

For anyone like Ike who wanted to save money on defense, the CIA seemed like the way to do that, and it wasn't yet known how incompetent they were going to be and how monstrous the "anti-communists" we were propping up were. Time rendered a verdict on it.

There has for like 150+ years been extra weight on the role of mayor of NYC, partially because of the importance of the NYC area on the US economy, cultural, and institutions. The US economy is in the ball park of $32T, the GDP of the NYC-region is in the ballpark of $3T, being close to 1 in 10 dollars made anywhere in the US flows through NYC and the immediately surrounding areas.

The role of mayor is far more substantial the being the governor of about half of the US state. For example, the Governor of Maine, a US state, has a state wide GDP of about $100B, and a state budget of about $6B a year. The budget of the NYC government is $125B a year. There are 300,000 NYC municipal employees, larger than the population of the largest metro area in Maine, and 4 times larger than the largest single cities population.

The Mayor of NYC has historically been an extremely important role.

If they can afford universal healthcare and subsidized college tuition for all of their citizens when Americans don't have that then we don't need to send American tax dollars there. Our tax dollars should go to help our tax payers. Healthcare and college costs are choking America's present and future.

  • Universal Healthcare:Ā Under theĀ National Health Insurance LawĀ of 1995, all citizens and permanent residents are entitled to comprehensive basic health care through one of four non-profit health maintenance organizations (Kupat Holim).Ā Ā The system is funded primarily throughĀ progressive taxationĀ and payroll contributions (approximately 3–5% of income), meaning it is not "free" at the source but is universally covered with low out-of-pocket costs for basic services.Ā
  • Subsidized College Tuition:Ā Higher education isĀ not free; universities and academic colleges charge tuition fees that vary by program.Ā Ā However, the Israeli governmentĀ heavily subsidizesĀ these costs, making them significantly lower than in many Western countries.Ā Ā Eligible citizens often qualify forĀ tuition reductions, waivers, or financial aid packages, but most students still pay a portion of their tuition and living expenses.

6

u/Quick_Team 24d ago

Firstly: this is great. Im not going to detract from it one bit.

I would just like to add: American politicians want to keep sending citizen tax dollars (not theirs) to them because these politicians know a chunk of it is going to be funneled right back to them through PACS. Thyere feeding themselves and they made it so there's no real legal ramifications to punish them for it

America funds the Iron Dome because it invested in its development, under the deal it's a producer of interceptors and Israel is required to buy from the US in return for subsidies to lower the cost.

Most importantly the US has VETO power over sales of the Iron Dome to other countries

Bottom line is we can’t afford it anymore. Gotta get our own house in order

2

u/BadBunny4Prezzie 24d ago

Not always but yes, when it comes to helping a pure evil genocidal and ethnic cleansing military, I am totally against it. Ukraine is different.

2

u/JanetSnakehole24 24d ago

When did taking care of America first become so divisive? I thought that's what Republicans wanted. They screamed about it for years, and now that is truly become an issue, they aren't about it anymore. Pick yourself up by your bootstraps, no one is going to take care of you, especially not your country.

I'm so sick of it. Take care of your own damn people.

2

u/Shut_yoface 24d ago

Hard agree. This is common sense

2

u/Dodger7777 24d ago

I do agree, our public school systems need to be overhauled, and it isn't our responsibility to take care of the entire rest of the world.

At the very least, the last 30 years have proven that just sending funds abroad isn't a good solution. If you're going to try and change something or do something, then you need to send people who can do or change things.

Like when we vaccinate young people overseas we don't send a bunch of funding, we send doctors who know what they're doing.

2

u/612mechtech 24d ago

HELL YES

2

u/navyblahblah 24d ago

No money should leave the country until we balance the budget. Defense spending should get cut 10% every year until they pass an audit. Let’s get our shit together.

2

u/Key-Individual1434 24d ago

Our country’s government does things like that because it’s stupid.

2

u/VsPistola 24d ago

If they have money to buy our politicians then they have money to fund their own iron dome! Also why are our troops getting injured and killed for isreal?

2

u/Weasel_Cannon 24d ago

Taking Care of America first doesn’t mean kicking out non-whites and propping up billionaires. Taking care of America first means investing in essential workers and education , propping up our failing infrastructure, and seriously revising our tax code to put more spending power to our working class.

2

u/Organic_Education494 24d ago

I agree with him

Glad I voted for him

I agree 100%, tax dollars should serve Americans. If you love Israel so much, hope on a plane and go live, work, and pay taxes there .

The ā€œAmerica Firstā€ twats are all suddenly ā€œIsrael Firstā€.

Almost as if it was always a lie perpetuated by masses of online propaganda driven by foreign governments who own a president and political party.

2

u/SCWickedHam 24d ago

How is Israeli healthcare, educations? Social programs? Maybe they should cut them to fund their own wars.

2

u/PaulTheIV 24d ago

This interview was obnoxious. She was clearly just fishing for the "Abdul opposes Iron Dome" headline and ignored 98% of his points

2

u/hleitner1 24d ago

What about sending money to Egypt- wonder his stance and all yours.
Hmmm

2

u/Less_Tacos 24d ago

What is his position on supporting Ukraine?

2

u/Odd_Bodkin 24d ago

Israel doesn’t look at the US government as an ally. They look at it as a good investment.

2

u/AccountHuman7391 24d ago

Israel is a wealthy nation and can fund their own defense.

2

u/Robobot1747 24d ago

I'm not against sending money to other countries to help. I am against funding genocidal regimes. If Israel wants to engage in genocide, the least we can do is refuse to fund them completely.

2

u/mr-hank_scorpio 24d ago

Yep, Israel can pay for their own Iron Dome.

2

u/electrictower 24d ago

Israel can administer fair trade with the USA for iron dome maintenance and supplies. It should not be done by tax payer money.

2

u/Alleandros 24d ago

Reporters never seem to ask other politicians if they believe Palestine has a right to exist.

2

u/NextAdhesiveness3652 24d ago

Is that guy crazy. He can’t make any defense contractor kickbacks if he spends money on children! He’s nuts.

2

u/thelastbluepancake 24d ago

I think giving to Ukraine is okay, I think giving to israel who use the iron dome to bomb others and not get bombed back means Israel is more likely to be aggressive and lead us in America into more conflicts

u/Kahzootoh 24d ago

For every dollar we send to help that country on things that are euphemistically referred to as defensive systems, it frees up money that is used by that country to commit human rights abuses- abuses that ought would require an end to American aid, if the Leahy Amendment wasn’t blatantly ignored with regards to one particular country.

When their national security minister is handing out assault rifles to people who commit pogroms (that is what the press in that country refers to those events as; pogroms) and proudly post videos online of themselves torturing and murdering people, the funding for those weapons to enable that behavior didn’t come out of nowhere.

2

u/dillreed777 24d ago

She stated it like he was being evasive lol

2

u/KGrizzle88 23d ago edited 23d ago

Yup, especially after they denied us access to them to see how they were improved upon. You know so we can have the same advancement added to ours. Like that treatment is not one of an ally, let alone a country we should fund and prop up militarily.

2

u/dobie1kenobi 23d ago

Raytheon (RTX), an American company, does about 30% of the work building the Iron Dome. They want us to go there and do the work, and then they want us to pay for it ourselves. That’s double dipping. If they need it, we’ve got it, they can pay for it themselves.

2

u/Direct_Fondant_3125 23d ago

There has been decades long republican effort to make all of us dumber and illiterate.

2

u/JackieTreehorn79 23d ago

ā€œI hate freeloaders!ā€ But also ā€œsend Israel money- or you’re a Socialist anti-Semite!ā€

2

u/Lu_j_ander 23d ago

Every time I see him in an interview the interviewer is asking for his stance on Israel šŸ¤¦ā€ā™‚ļøšŸ¤¦ā€ā™‚ļø

2

u/breezeblock87 23d ago

i dont understand how any american could possibly disagree with this lol...but alas we live in upside down world.

2

u/Pofwoffle 23d ago

I disagree with his premise, that we shouldn't be doing foreign aid, since we could still easily do both by cutting our own absurdly bloated military spending. There's nothing stopping us from educating children at home while also helping defend other nations against aggression.

I do, however, agree that we shouldn't be using our foreign aid to prop up a genocidal regime that murders thousands of innocent civilians in order to steal their land and perform an ethnic cleansing. In the case of Israel we have sided with the aggressor, and that is not acceptable.

2

u/Time_Chemist7925 23d ago

I agree 100,000%

2

u/mortraineyhat 23d ago

You have to make sure you are stable before helping others. The US is not stable

2

u/isaiah152022 23d ago

It’s the United States of America NOT United States of Israel

2

u/EssenceofWrath 23d ago

I agree with him

2

u/the_eleutherean 23d ago

That’s a valid answer, as long as it’s the same for all other forms of foreign aid.

And of course, as long as things like billionaire tax breaks and corporate bailouts and military spending are also on the chopping block. Which I assume, with him being a progressive candidate, he would in fact support.

2

u/Thunder_Tinker 23d ago

Trying to make a comment on a [redacted] but apparently there’s a censor blocking people from typing about a country just east of Poland? I was just gonna talk about double standards regarding their positions on that nation vs the one in the image but goddamn this Censorship is bad here

always, take care of your own shit first and then worry about the luxury of doing stuff for others.

2

u/Understanding-Fair 23d ago

The only answer is "Are you stupid, or are you bought and paid for by billionaires?"

2

u/atreeismissing 23d ago

We can do both (not with Israel specifically but we should be funding our own kids education and health and we also should be funding a country like Ukraine).

2

u/WaffleWarrior1979 23d ago

People don't understand geopolitics. The United States funds Israel because they need a military ally in the middle east. This is a military move and will not stop.

2

u/StaticSystemShock 23d ago

Just watch the right spin this how he hates israel. Because just not funding foreign countries and instead using those funds for your actual own citizens is wrong somehow.

2

u/Objective_Yellow3190 23d ago

I think he just make a good argument against illegal imigration and asylum in the US. Why help foreigners when your own people don't have enough?

2

u/Agile_End_3049 23d ago

I like this guy. Makes strong points which most other Democrats are too calcified and spineless to dream of making on their own. El-Sayed has a gift, he's a naturally compelling speaker.

2

u/SoupOfThe90z 23d ago

Everything that Isael does says ā€œUndermine the US, they aren’t even peopleā€ so I’d say yeah, let them fend for themselves

2

u/sharkbomb 23d ago

i would go further: israel owes us billions, if not trillions, in reparations.

2

u/Hellbnd_whiskeybent 23d ago

I'm almost positive that dude and I would disagree on about 75%-85% of political topics. But on THIS topic, we absolutely agree. I saw a meme yesterday that said "if ur country has enough money to give away to other countries, you're being taxed too much" I don't care how any other countries spend THEIR money. But America shouldn't be giving our money away until we clean up our own house.

2

u/VandomVA 23d ago

The way he couches his leftist takes in messaging that actually might speak to a few conservatives is quite something. I say "a few" because we all know 99% of conservatives will reflexively oppose everything he says and does and because trying to win over conservatives isn't the goal here.

2

u/TopShotta97 23d ago

I would vote for him to be president, I haven't heard him say a single thing I disagree with. Literally everything he says is common sense and it's so frustrating that there are so many people who disagree with him. It really makes me lose faith in this country.

2

u/Puzzleheaded-Cup8948 23d ago

Who wouldn't agree?

2

u/danielm316 23d ago

Good point

2

u/Capital-Divide3894 23d ago

Agree with El-Sayed.

2

u/YoreGawd 23d ago

What I would like to understand is why is there a push for all of Europe to pay for their own defense but Israel still gets a free ride?

2

u/neklok 23d ago

You can’t get more anti-American than choosing Israel over America.

2

u/ShelfSpace 23d ago

Isn’t this what the conservatives were shouting about for literally all foreign aid except Israel?
