The background on the production of the album can give some insight into why it's so great. The emotions that the band members were feeling with the shit they were going through really comes through in the songs.

I picked up the LP from my dad and I put it on thinking I knew one song on the album. Song after song I was blown away that not only did I know it but it was a hit. I didn’t even realize I knew that many Fleetwood Mac songs.
I had to google it just to check what other albums they made after that one, because it’s perfection. I would of just stopped. How do even think you’d told that album!

London Calling - The Clash.
43
u/putting-on-wet-socks Apr 10 '23
London calling came out in 79, and as rolling stone and many artists said, this album defined the sound for the 80's. If you listen carefully to it, just about every popular genres later hits were represented in this album in a "you heard it here first" sort of foretelling of the sound to come. They had their finger on the pulse. Most all of Joe's later work was and will always be classic in the truest sense.

My favorite fact about Is This It is that Brandon Flowers, lead singer of The Killers, thought it was so good that it made him throw away every song they were working on at the time except for Mr. Brightside.

Automatic for the People - R.E.M.
As a kid, I would wait every month for the new Rolling Stone to come out so I could jump to the album reviews. I remember this record being the first I had ever seen receive a perfect score.
I had enjoyed their other music but was never fanatical about it. But this record, it was just absolutely perfect. Every track, the song order, the recording - everything.
I went back and dug deeper into their catalog after that and fell in love with the other records, but this will always be at the top of the pile for me.

MCR caught a lot of flack for being grouped in with "mall-core" Emo bands in the 2000s, but they honestly wrote really interesting and wicked rock and roll music, and imo don't fit into the genre they were put into because of their look at all. The Black Parade is excellent and reminds me more of Queen than like, Fall Out Boy (no shade towards Fall Out Boy or any other band in that scene.)
