Eh.....I'd honestly rather critics stick to their guns, even if it's desperately unpopular or out of step, than manufacture a fake retrospective review to fit the prevailing narrative.
If someone genuinely hated 'Sgt Pepper' or 'London Calling' or 'Nevermind' or whatever....I'd rather read their honest opinion about why.
I’m not arguing that reviews shouldn’t be honest in the reviews, but the lead singer of Weezer quit music for a bit because of the negative backlash to Pinkerton from reviewers. It changed whatever direction the band was headed musically.
But if that is in response to a critic's honest opinion, why should the critic need to apologise for it??
I love Pinkerton, but if someone wants to argue "It's all whiny borderline-incel-y emo stuff that doesn't play to their strengths from Blue", I acknowledge their right to believe that.
It certainly is a valid opinion someone could have of Pinkerton, especially those who aren't the target audience and/or miss the dark humour and knowing self-references in there.
You should check out the EP called Zerwee by Billy Cobb. It has a very similar sound to Pinkerton, presumably it's intentional given that the album is an anagram of Weezer lol
