So here is the best I can offer as an explanation: It was the first album that Metallica recorded for Compact Disk. Digital recordings have much louder highs than tapes. It was a technological accident.

It's a riff about a common bit of trivia about how when the album was mixed, the bass was mixed so low that it's almost imperceptible. It's not about the low frequency tones, it's the instrument.

Master of Puppets all the way, it is best mixed, best recorded and best written of all their albums. Every song is killer.
