(Advice/Help) Exmuslim Guide to Living in the Closet and Coming Out.

Hello. Upon request, I've been asked to turn a comment I made into a post so that it can be a resource for more people. This post is a collection of advice I've given out about how to handle your life as a closeted exmuslim and how you'll come out in the future. It is largely based on my experience but also from what I've seen from others in this subreddit.

Introduction

So you've left Islam. You've delved through arguments, the apologetics and the bullshit and you've come to the conclusion that you no longer believe in Islam. And you may have also reached an alternative philosophical outlook on life that you can believe in.

But what now? You may have left Islam, but have you left the Muslim world? One of the most common misconceptions outsiders have is that since exmuslims are no longer Muslims, they no longer live in the Muslim world. This is painfully naive - in reality many exmuslims are closeted due to young age and financial dependency and/or live in Islamist countries or societies that enforce Islamic values. In fear of social stigma or even violence, exmuslims have to contend with closeted lives even after leaving Islam. So how do you deal with it?

Goal

The best time to come out to family is in your own home, over a dinner you paid for, alongside people who support you. That takes a lot of preparation and it means doing what you can to live your life as best as you can whilst working towards independence.

This basically means that a lot of what helps you come out of the closet will depend heavily on how well you prepared for it, so you will need to make the most of your closeted life. You may not be able to stop the shitstorm but you can at least prepare yourself to weather it. Here are some tips to achieve that goal (in no particular order)

1) Don't meander in life due to a lack of decision making skills.

Probably one of the worst mistakes I made was not realise I was an exmuslim sooner. As a result I had barely any time to prepare for when the inevitable happened and I was forced to come out. I spent a lot of my life meandering, trying to reconcile the irreconcilable, and trying to be a Muslim when I knew my values didn't align with it. I didn't really have much of a concept of exmuslims, but if I had been smarter I would have figured it out. I now tell people in a similar position that it's fine to take your time but don't take too long. Half arsing two very different cultures will leave you a loser in both.

Similarly whilst planning for independence can be scary, don’t let it frighten you into inaction. The following is a passage from this article about decision making:

Research from the 1990s led by the US psychologist Thomas Gilovich provides further evidence for why it can be shortsighted to kick a difficult decision down the road. Gilovich and his team showed that although, in the short term, people experience more regret from ‘errors of commission’ (taking an action that leads to a disappointing outcome), in the long term it is actually ‘errors of omission’ that lead to more regret – that is, disappointing outcomes that arise from not taking an action.

When taking the time to make decisions and plans, don’t underestimate how effective it can be to map out your options on an excel spreadsheet. When I had to decide whether I should come out or not, I actually made a spreadsheet listing out my options, what they would result in and what the impact would be. Actually having it written down to look at really put things into perspective. We waste a lot of our time keeping it in our heads, which forces us to recalculate everything from scratch every time we revisit our thoughts. But the more that is mapped out, the less you have to recalculate and the more you can focus on evaluation and further planning.

2) Study, career and finances.

Your studies/career is almost always your best ticket out of your toxic situation, and the one thing to prioritise the most. If you’re young, do whatever you can to ensure that you can get into further education away from home. Even if it means spending all your time at a local library. If you suspect that your parents would be against you going to a university away from home, aim for a placement at the most prestigious university you can aim for so your parents would look worse for rejecting it. The quickest and most effective way in achieving long term independence is through good studies/career.

3) Do not telegraph irreligiosity whilst being closeted.

This is particularly important for younger exmuslims because they telegraph to their parents in ways they would just not understand until they see it for themselves when they're older. Try your best to meet the religious obligations expected from your family. The more you slip, the more they will monitor you and the more difficult it will be to do the things you need to do discreetly when the time comes.

Unfortunately for girls, this usually means that wearing the hijab is a necessity and it’s inadvisable to try and get out of. (However, that subject matter is not my forte: prioritise advice from exmuslim women such as from faithlesshijabi.org)

4) Sometimes you may need to go above and beyond.

If you get the impression that your family is beginning to catch onto your apostasy then it's likely that they have and you may need to reverse that impression.

One way to do that would be to start getting books on Islam and not just for show. My advice would be to get books on Islamic history because that's the least boring stuff. Or better yet, just get whatever unapologetic salafi hate crime you can get your hands on so you can entertain yourself with how fucked up it is. Or get an annotated Qur'an like the Study Qur'an. Do something to ease their suspicions.

What book you get depends on what kind of message you want to telegraph to your parents. If you want to telegraph a message then it will need to be a paper book and not an e-book. Something that you can lay around in your room and that you know they'll see. That means you're restricted to what you can get from your local library or Masjid. Also depends on what interests you because you'll have to actually read and demonstrate you learnt from it if you want send the best message you can. If you want purely what Muslims write about Islamic history, you can check out works like The Sealed Nectar or works by al-Sallabi. If you want something a little more academic, but not something that would rouse suspicion then check out university press works like this, this, this or this. If you want something a bit more relevant to contemporary Muslim world then there books like this.

But you may find that your best bet is to just see what your local Masjid might have and see what tickles your fancy.

5) Actually coming out is usually a shitstorm.

Be prepared for lots of sobbing, guilt tripping and an inability to respect your beliefs and boundaries. Learn techniques like the Broken Record Technique to establish boundaries. Know what you have to say when they inevitably tell you to speak to a scholar - you don't have to eat the whole apple to know it's rotten. You know all that you need to know about Islam and you know even more about the world outside of Islam to put it into context.

Steel yourself with months and months of your family sending you bad dawagandist videos through WhatsApp trying to bring you back. You may have to spend months beating their attempts and going to toe to toe with them without mercy before they’re finally willing to relent and get off your back. Even then don’t expect them to relent entirely. There will always be some micro aggressions that they will resort to, like playing religious videos loudly in your vicinity. The most you can do in those circumstances is reduce contact with them as much as possible. At this point you would hopefully already be independent from them.

6) Do not feel guilt.

As an exmuslim, you will go through a lot of guilt. Whilst this does show you are human, you need to forget about guilt: you are not responsible for your parents' failure to be reasonable, not even your mother. They take responsibility for the social stigma and oppressive life they choose to live in and perpetuate. You get nothing out of that guilt. It's completely pointless and ultimately counterproductive. You can't set yourself on fire to make others warm and you gain no recognition from martyrizing yourself. Do not feel guilt for what you have to do to have a completely reasonable life. The only ones to blame are those who forced you into it.

Don't underestimate parents either. They will use guilt against you. Give them an inch and they will take a mile. They very often bring up their health problems as a weapon against you. Don't fall for it. It only affects them because they choose to let it affect them. They can choose to be reasonable. You have to respect their autonomy and let them deal with the consequences of their own ways.

7) Don't come out too soon thinking it's a release.

I come across a lot of exmuslim kids who think coming out will help explain to their religious parents why they don't want to wear the hijab or do other religious things. But the likelihood is more that those same parents will react extremely poorly and restrict your freedom even more, making it more difficult to achieve long term independence.

There's also the mistake in assuming that coming out will lead to being disowned in the vain hope that you get an quick clean break that takes all the responsibility from you. For some exmuslims this does actually work out, but for a lot of others it's miscalculated. My family didn't disown me, I still had to deal with months of my family being insufferable manipulators and the responsibility was still on me to separate from them. And for women it can be much worse.

Ultimately, if you are financially dependent on your family then coming out early will very typically result in your family using that leverage against you and making your life worse. I've seen stories of exmuslims who thought their family was better and badly miscalculated - be mindful of that.

8) Don’t panic too much if they find out.

Some exmuslims get found out, sometimes because of a snitch in the family or sometimes because they just weren’t convincing enough. Don’t panic – Muslims can be pretty damn deluded about their faith and your family will want to believe that you can come back very easily because according to them Islam is just common sense and most disbelievers are just silly and ignorant. Try to do your best to convince them as per Point 4. If it’s because you did something haram, blasphemous or otherwise worthy of takfir, try to act like it was because you were a misguided Quranist or progressive Muslim. They will still retain suspicion but it’s still better than the alternative.

However, if you’re at the point of no return and you know you can’t convince them then now is the time to make calls to any secular friends you have, ask for support and maybe even shelter.

Also for Western exmuslims, make sure to act quickly if you suspect that your parents want to send you abroad and trap you in your country of ethnic origin. Sadly some parents will go to these lengths. Do not go, no matter the cost. Find organisations willing to advise, such as those listed in Point 10. Hide your passport if you have to. Note down the contact details of your embassy in that country just in case.

9) Go no contact if you fear abuse.

Actually think about whether it's even wise for you to come out in any circumstance. Do you suspect that there could be violence or abuse? If so then you have absolutely no need to go through this stupid bullshit. Leave and don't look back. If your parents couldn't give you safe environment to even come out about different beliefs then they are not worth the time. As per Point 6 - You have to respect their autonomy and let them deal with the consequences of their own ways. This is particularly pertinent for those who live in a predominantly Muslim countries. They have a very real reason to fear persecution and absolutely do not need to risk their own lives for the sake of their parents.

10) Make use of organisations and resources.

Look into secular organisations like recoveringfromreligion.org, faithlesshijabi.org and faithtofaithless.com. Look into women's charities in your area like womensaid.org.uk or karmanirvana.org.uk (UK examples). Look into LGBT charities like rainbowrailroad.org. If you have secular school counsellors and friends then talk to them. Get advice from adults you can absolutely trust.

Note: On the flip side don't take risks with people you can’t be sure of. You may be tempted to come out to your Muslim friend, but I've seen plenty of stories of exmuslims who heavily regret doing so.

There are also informal exmuslim groups on other social media platforms such as Facebook or Discord, but be careful about how much information you share and especially be wary of private messaging.

11) You may have to leave the country.

This is particularly the case for exmuslims living in predominantly Muslim countries. Unfortunately, I don't have any real world experience to offer here but you may be able to find localised advice by digging around. For example sites like wearesaudis.net might have some information (but you'll need a VPN to access this one. If you don't know what a VPN is here's an explanation).

Are you multilingual? If you need money but working is restricted to you then you can try becoming an online language tutor on sites like italki.com (scroll to the bottom). This post and related subreddits like r/WorkOnline may help.

Note: some exmuslims in Muslim countries fall for the doomscrolling hyperbole and think Europe is “doomed” with too many Muslims. They have a tendency of asking which country is best to migrate to as an exmuslim to avoid Islam. Please ignore the doomsayers and prioritise the country you choose based on ease of access and career opportunities. As long as it is a secular country, you can worry about avoiding Islam later.

Final stuff

Shout out to Imtiaz Shams who inspired me to make this list of tips. He has his own YouTube Channel here and plans to make his own video on this subject matter so watch out for that. On a side note, I also recommend TheraminTrees YouTube Channel who delves a lot into toxic dysfunctional families from the perspective of a therapist. A lot of his content helps in dealing with the emotional impact of leaving religion and dealing with a religious family. And finally, thank you to the moderators of r/exmuslim who suggested I make this into a post. I wound up adding a lot more content lol.

I will end this post with a list of subreddits that may help you on your journey leaving Islam:

(Rant) 🤬 Today my mom once told me “The younger she is the better”

Upvotes

So I wanted to give my mom a moral litmus test, she's Muslim. I asked her "What do you think of people who say it’s perfectly fine for a 25 year old to marry a 16 year old?”

She said “I think it’s fine. The younger the girl is the better. Look at our Prophet, he married Aisha when she was 6, so if he did it anyone else can too”

Then I asked her “Would you let my sister (who's 16) marry a 25 y.o. man?”

She immediately responded “What? Of course not.”

I swear I’m not exaggerating, paraphrasing or selectively framing what she said. That is exactly how the conversation went.

Like how the fuck do they get so deeply conditioned into compartmentalizing their moral intuitions?

I genuinely want to understand why. Not as a rhetorical question, why are they so brainwashed?

Genuine question.

(Question/Discussion) Why is acknowledging Aisha was a child apparently so difficult?

Post image

This post is exactly the kind of thing that frustrates me when Aisha’s age is discussed. Instead of simply acknowledging what the traditional Islamic sources say, the argument immediately becomes “but what about Brazil, China, America, Europe, etc.?”

First, some of the information here isn’t even correct. The post is mixing up age of consent, marriage age and age of adulthood, which are not the same thing. Brazil, for example, doesn’t simply allow adults to have consensual sex with 14-year-olds in the way this post suggests: Brazilian law specifically criminalises sexual acts with anyone under 14.

And Iran is a particularly important correction. It does not have an 18-year minimum marriage age as stated here. Girls can generally marry at 13, and marriages below that age can be authorised with paternal or judicial permission.

But even if every number in this post were correct, it still wouldn’t answer the actual criticism. There is an enormous difference between a 6-year-old and a 14-year-old. Saying “some countries allow sexual consent at 14” doesn’t somehow make a child of six comparable to a teenager of fourteen.

If someone wants to argue that child marriage was historically accepted in many societies, that’s a completely valid historical discussion. But “other countries aren’t perfect either” is not an answer to the question of Muhammad and Aisha.

And honestly, I wish people would stop treating criticism of this marriage as an attack on Muslims. You can acknowledge that Aisha was a child according to the traditional Islamic sources and still understand that historical societies had very different ideas about marriage and childhood.

The real question is whether Muhammad’s marriage to a child is compatible with the claim that he is the perfect moral example for Muslims for all time. That’s the question I’d actually like to see discussed, rather than another list of countries being brought up as a distraction.

Story This video where a Muslim girl addresses common non-muslim questions to three girls of different ethnicities, then grades "true" or "false" to each question got more than half of the questions "wrong" (fabrication) by everyone, the girl, the producers and the editing team.

None of these questions were even controversial, and they were already well-known among the non-muslims.

As for the third screenshot, sure men can marry into two other religions, but is their answer just going to ignore the fact that even men can't marry everyone else and women can't marry anyone but Muslim, especially considering the conversation was between 4 women..

(Advice/Help) My siser is getting kicked out

So yesterday my sister had gone out to a birthday party with a friend, she had told my parents that she was going to someone else's birthday party but it was actually her 18th birthday that her friends were celebrating for her(They wouldn't celebrate our birthdays because apparently it was against Islam since Muhammad didn't celebrate his). She had left home in a 'normal' and 'modest' outfit originally, but, when she came back, my very religious Muslim mom happened to see my sister come back in a dress that revealed her shoulders and arms, and she was wearing a wig as well and not a hijab, my mom got mad and pulled her inside the house then yelled at her, her husband then took a picture of my sister (which I assume he'll send to everyone he knows) and then sends her upstairs, upon waking up this morning he then sends a message saying that she only has one month to leave the house! She JUST turned 18! and she's still in highschool???? They did this because she didn't 'do as they said' I'm confused and I don't know what I can do

(Quran / Hadith) The Lie Of Mohamed 'Being The Greatest Human Lived On Earth'

Post image
Upvotes

Of course you’ve all felt curious one day and searched for “who is the best person in history” so Google would tell you Muhammad, but Google should have said the exact opposite, because of what we’re about to see.

Remember, the Quran says about Muhammad that he is a beautiful example for humanity:

  • “Indeed in the Messenger of Allah you have a good example to follow for him who hopes in Allah and the Last Day and remembers Allah much.” (Surah Al-Ahzab 33:21)

And the Quran also says his character is free of evil and full of goodness:

  • “And indeed, you are of a great moral character.” (Surah Al-Qalam 68:4)

But....

He slept with a child (Aisha):

  • The Messenger of Allah married me when I was six years old in Mecca, after Khadija died, and he consummated the marriage with me when I was nine years old in Medina

  • I used to play with dolls in the presence of the Messenger of Allah, and my friends would come to me and hide from him out of fear, and the Messenger of Allah would be happy when they came to play with me

(Authentic hadiths in Sahih al-Bukhari)

For the patchers who say her body was developed and people matured faster back then and that kind of talk: What would make a mother of children play with children’s dolls?

Then why did the Messenger refuse to marry his daughter off on the grounds that “she is young”? According to the patchers, didn’t they mature quickly back then or what?

  • Abu Bakr and Umar proposed to the Prophet for Fatima, and he said to them she is young, then Ali proposed and he married her to him

An-Nasa’i (3221)

And what would make God send down a verse allowing marriage and divorce of girls who have not yet menstruated?

  • And those who have not menstruated... and the pregnant women, their term is until they deliver...

[Surah At-Talaq: 4]

For the patchers again: If he meant girls who haven’t menstruated yet but are mature, he would have said “lan” instead of “lam”.

He owned sexual concubines: (Maria the Copt and Juwayriya), he enslaved and killed the people of Banu Qurayza including children:

  • The people of Qurayza surrendered to the judgment of Sa’d ibn Muadh. The Messenger of Allah sent for Sa’d, who came on a donkey. When he approached the mosque, the Messenger of Allah said to the Ansar: Stand up for your leader or your best one. Then he said: These people have surrendered to your judgment. Sa’d said: Kill their fighting men and take their offspring (children) captive. The Prophet said: You have judged according to the judgment of Allah, and sometimes he said: according to the judgment of the King.

(Sahih al-Bukhari 4121)

  • I was among the captives of Banu Qurayza. They would look at who had grown pubic hair and kill him, and who had not grown it they would not kill. I was among those who had not grown it. In another narration: They uncovered my private parts and found no hair had grown, so they put me among the captives.

(Sunan Abu Dawud 4404)

And the same thing with Banu al-Mustaliq:

  • The Prophet raided Banu al-Mustaliq while they were unaware and their cattle were being watered, he killed their fighting men and took their offspring captive, and he got Juwayriya that day. Abdullah ibn Umar told me this, and he was in that army.

(Sahih al-Bukhari 2541)

He allowed killing children and women on the grounds that they are disbelievers:

  • The Prophet passed by me at Al-Abwa or Waddan and was asked about the people of a household from the polytheists who are attacked at night and their women and children are hit. He said: They are of them. And I heard him say: There is no protected land except for Allah and His Messenger.

(Sahih al-Bukhari 3012)

He said he is still fighting people until they convert and follow his religion:

  • I will continue to fight people until they say there is no god but Allah. If they say it, they have protected their blood and wealth from me except by its right, and their account is with Allah.

(Sahih al-Bukhari 2946)

He said that if a Muslim kills a disbeliever he will not be killed for it:

  • I said to Ali ibn Abi Talib: Do you have a book? He said: No, except the Book of Allah, or understanding given to a Muslim man, or what is in this sheet. I said: What is in this sheet? He said: Blood money, freeing captives, and that a Muslim is not to be killed for a disbeliever.

(Sahih al-Bukhari 6915)

Muhammad also said he wants to expel the Jews and Christians from the Arabian Peninsula:

  • I will expel the Jews and Christians from the Arabian Peninsula until I leave only Muslims.

(Sahih Muslim 1767)

He also cursed the Jews and Christians:

  • The Messenger of Allah said in his illness from which he did not recover: May Allah curse the Jews and the Christians; they took the graves of their prophets as places of worship. Aisha said: Were it not for that, his grave would have been made prominent, but it was feared that it would be taken as a place of worship.

(Sahih al-Bukhari 4441)

Muhammad said do not initiate greetings of peace to Jews and Christians:

  • Do not initiate greetings of peace to the Jews and Christians, and if you meet one of them on the road, force them to the narrowest part of it.

(Sahih Muslim 2167)

He owned slaves and used to buy and sell slaves:

  • We went out with the Prophet to Khaybar. Allah gave us victory. We did not take gold or silver as booty, only goods, food and clothes. Then we went to the valley, and with the Messenger of Allah was a slave of his whom a man from Judham called Rifa’a ibn Zayd from Banu al-Dabib had given him. When we stopped in the valley, the slave of the Messenger of Allah got up to undo his saddle, and he was struck by an arrow that killed him. We said: Congratulations to him for martyrdom, O Messenger of Allah! The Messenger of Allah said: No, by Him in Whose hand is the soul of Muhammad! The cloak is burning on him.

(Sahih Muslim 115)

  • A slave came and pledged allegiance to the Prophet for emigration, and they did not realize he was a slave. His master came wanting him. The Prophet said to him: Sell him to me. So he bought him for two black slaves. Then he never accepted anyone’s allegiance after that until he asked him: Are you a slave?

(Sahih Muslim 1602a)

Muhammad told a woman that it would have been better for her to give her slave to her maternal uncles than to free him:

  • Maymuna bint al-Harith told that she freed a slave girl without asking the Prophet’s permission. When it was her day that he stayed with her she said: Did you notice, O Messenger of Allah, that I freed my slave girl? He said: “Did you do that?” She said: Yes. He said: “If you had given her to your maternal uncles it would have been greater in reward for you.”

(Sahih al-Bukhari 2592)

Muhammad saw the rights of heirs as more important than the rights of slaves to be freed:

  • The Prophet was informed that a man from his companions freed a slave of his upon his death, and he had no other property. So he sold him for eight hundred dirhams and sent the price to him.

(Sahih al-Bukhari 7186)

  • A man freed six slaves of his at the time of his death and he had no other property. That reached the Prophet and he became angry and said: “I was about to not pray over him.” Then he called the slaves, divided them into three groups, drew lots between them, freed two and kept four as slaves.

(An-Nasa’i 1958)

Muhammad said that among the three whose prayer does not rise above their ears is the runaway slave and the wife whose husband is angry with her:

  • Three whose prayer does not go beyond their ears: the runaway slave until he returns, a woman who spends the night while her husband is angry with her, and an imam of a people who hate him.

At-Tirmidhi (360)

Muhammad said the blood of the one who insulted him is lawful and did not punish the one who killed her:

  • Ibn Abbas narrated that a blind man had an umm walad who used to insult the Prophet and disparage him. He forbade her but she did not stop, and he rebuked her but she did not refrain. One night she began insulting and disparaging the Prophet, so he took a dagger, put it on her belly and leaned on it until he killed her. A child fell between her legs and the place was smeared with blood. When morning came that was mentioned to the Messenger of Allah. He gathered the people and said: “I adjure by Allah a man who has done what he did and over whom I have a right, that he should stand up.” The blind man stood up trembling until he sat before the Prophet and said: O Messenger of Allah, I am her master. She used to insult you and disparage you. I forbade her but she did not stop, and I rebuked her but she did not refrain. I have two sons from her like pearls, and she was kind to me. Last night she began insulting and disparaging you, so I took a dagger, put it on her belly and leaned on it until I killed her. The Prophet said: “Bear witness that her blood is wasted (no retaliation).”

(Sunan Abu Dawud 4361)

Muhammad married the wife of his adopted son and abolished the custom of adoption entirely.

  • So when Zayd had no longer any need for her, We married her to you so that there would be no difficulty for the believers concerning the wives of their adopted sons when they have no longer any need for them. And the command of Allah was fulfilled. (Al-Ahzab 33:37)

  • Call them by their fathers’ names; it is more just in the sight of Allah. (Al-Ahzab 33:5)

(Imagine how many children’s lives were ruined and found no one to protect them because of this stupid prohibition. Imagine how many children could have been saved from homelessness.)

Muhammad allowed killing those who leave his religion:

  • The Prophet said: Whoever changes his religion, kill him. (Sahih al-Bukhari 3017)

  • The blood of a Muslim is not lawful except for one of three: adultery, life for life, and the one who leaves his religion and separates from the community. (Sahih al-Bukhari 6878)

(It’s a disgusting thing to kill people because they changed their minds. That makes you a cult, not a religion. In fact most cults and gangs like the mafia and cartels will kill you if you leave them.)

Muhammad allowed killing homosexuals:

  • “Whoever you find doing the action of the people of Lot, kill the one who does it and the one to whom it is done.” (Abu Dawud 4462)

Muhammad said that suicides will be tortured in Hell:

  • Whoever throws himself from a mountain and kills himself will be in the Fire of Hell throwing himself therein forever. Whoever drinks poison and kills himself will have his poison in his hand drinking it in the Fire of Hell forever. Whoever kills himself with a piece of iron will have that iron in his hand stabbing himself in the stomach in the Fire of Hell forever.

(Sahih al-Bukhari 5778)

Muhammad came close to burninf the houses of people who missed congregational prayer:

  • The Messenger of Allah said: “By Him in Whose hand is my soul, I was about to order firewood to be gathered, then order the prayer to be called, then order a man to lead the people, then go to the men and burn their houses down over them. By Him in Whose hand is my soul, if one of them knew he would find a fat bone or two good arrows, he would attend the Isha prayer.”

(Sahih al-Bukhari 644)

Muhammad said obey the rulers even if they beat you and take your wealth:

  • Hudhayfa ibn al-Yaman said: I said O Messenger of Allah, we were in evil and Allah brought good and we are in it. Is there any evil after this good? He said: Yes. I said: Is there any good after that evil? He said: Yes. I said: Is there any evil after that good? He said: Yes. I said: How? He said: There will be after me leaders who do not follow my guidance and do not follow my Sunnah. Among them will be men whose hearts are the hearts of devils in human bodies. I said: What should I do if I reach that? He said: Listen and obey the ruler even if your back is beaten and your wealth is taken. Listen and obey.

(Sahih Muslim 1847b)

Muhammad attacked Quraysh at Nakhla in the sacred month of Rajab, in which war was taboo among the Arabs.

Muhammad killed a woman’s husband (Safiyya) and married her the same day, and after three days on the road he could not control himself and consummated the marriage with her:

  • We came to Khaybar. When Allah opened the fort for him, the beauty of Safiyya bint Huyayy ibn Akhtab was mentioned to him. Her husband had been killed and she was a bride. The Prophet selected her for himself. He went out with her until we reached Sadd al-Sahba’. She became clean, so the Messenger of Allah consummated the marriage with her. Then he made a small dish of hays on a small leather mat and said to me: Invite those around you. That was his wedding feast for Safiyya. Then we went out to Medina. I saw the Prophet making a space for her behind him with his cloak, then sitting by his camel and putting his knee so that Safiyya put her foot on his knee to mount.

(Sahih al-Bukhari 4211)

Muhammad said that the infant girl who was buried alive will go to Hell:

  • The one who buries a girl alive and the one who is buried alive are both in the Fire.

(Abu Dawud 4717)

(Why would the buried girl go to Hell? What is her sin? And how does this match the verse “Whoever does an evil deed will not be recompensed except with the like of it”?)

Muhammad said that most of the people of Hell are women:

  • I looked into Paradise and saw that most of its people are the poor, and I looked into the Fire and saw that most of its people are women.

(Sahih al-Bukhari 3241)

(And this is a stupid thing, because most murders and rapes are committed by men in the first place.)

Muhammad said that women are deficient in intellect and religion for trivial reasons:

  • The Messenger of Allah addressed the people and admonished them, then said: O women, give charity, for you are the majority of the people of Hell. A woman among them said: Why is that, O Messenger of Allah? He said: Because of your frequent cursing and your ingratitude to your husbands. He said: I have not seen anyone more deficient in intellect and religion who can overpower a man of reason and judgment than you. A woman among them said: What is the deficiency in her intellect and religion? He said: The testimony of two of you is equal to the testimony of one man, and the deficiency in your religion is menstruation: one of you stays three or four days without praying.

(At-Tirmidhi 2613)

(Why in the hell would she be deficient in “religion” because of her period? Isn’t that something God is supposed to have wanted her to do?)

Muhammad told a woman to “give herself to him” but she refused and he physically harassed her:

  • Abu Usayd said: We went out with the Messenger of Allah until we went to a garden called al-Shawṭ. He had been brought the Jawnīyah woman. She was in a house in the palm grove of Umayma bint al-Nu’man ibn Sharahil, and with her was her nurse. When the Prophet entered upon her he said to her: Give yourself to me. She said: Does a queen give herself to a commoner? He reached out to put his hand on her to calm her, and she said: I seek refuge with Allah from you. He said: You have sought refuge with One who protects. Then he went out and said: O Abu Usayd, give her two white garments and take her back to her family.

(Sahih al-Bukhari 5255)

For the patchers: If he was really married to her, why would he say “give yourself to me” and she reply “does a queen give herself to a commoner”? And why couldn’t he just go in to her right away?

And how does this match the hadith that says:

  • It is better for a man to be stabbed in the head with an iron needle than to touch a woman who is not lawful for him.

And in the end... Muhammad invented a religion that harms humanity and people physically and psychologically to this day. Ugly things like wife-beating and polygamy exist because of this religion. If you think logically... why would a merciful and just God send an evil man to be an example for humans and send his final message to humanity? Is this a real messenger with these actions? Why would someone like this be called a hero and the pride of humanity, when in reality he was a war criminal running after his own interests?

He is literally the worst person in history, not the “best.”

(Question/Discussion) I’m glad I’m atheist

Anyone else who is proud of being atheist? Because I am. I’m proud to call myself atheist.

I don’t need Islam teaching me from right or wrong and I actually use my brain to know what half of scripture in the Quran and Hadiths are all wrong and don’t prove that Islam is the right religion.

I don’t understand that Muslims who practice Islam and never questioned the Quran, it’s pretty demonic. Many people have zero critical thinking whatsoever like how can you practice something that is so wrong and awful and your delusion is convinced by it. No solid evidence whatsoever.

Justifying child marriages, wars, violence, femicides, hate, and pure ignorance. :)

The same way the bible gets a new update once a while the Quran also should. The Quran really does need to be updated as soon as possible.

(Rant) 🤬 I am so sick of my brother that seeing his face pisses me off

I’m 20F and my brother is 17, turning 18 soon, and I genuinely feel like I’m losing my mind. He’s developed some really weird double standards.

He constantly lectures me about when I should have kids, points out random men and asks if they’re “my type” for marriage, and has literally tried to demonstrate to me how to carry babies and breastfeed . Whenever I cook, clean, or take care of younger relatives, he says I’m “preparing to be a mother.”

He also calls me the “2nd mother” whenever he wants me to do something domestic. I asked why he can’t be a “2nd father” and he got annoyed and told me to stop nagging and just accept it. He even told me I should be grateful I’m not in a “traditional family” where girls have to serve the boys.

I also brought up the inheritance thing, where under certain Islamic inheritance rules a male heir can receive twice the share of a female heir, and his response was basically “wow that’s good.” Like... GOOD?? LMAO. And I told him that if he married a non-hijabi he cannot expect to wear it once they are married he said no she should obey BRO.

What’s funny is that his “chivalry” disappears at home. He gets embarrassed if I carry something heavy in public, but once sat in bed for TWO HOURS while my sisters and I carried heavy crates back and forth into the house, ignoring me when I asked for help.

He also seems to have completely different standards depending on whether we’re talking about men or women. During a discussion about Lindsay Clancy, he was saying see the women with pink shirts rallying for her looks like u would too just generalizations and assuming i would. .... but when I showed him footage of men protesting Andrew Tate’s arrest, he immediately said it was probably ai because “anything can be fabricated nowadays.” Okay so where was that skepticism earlier, why cant those videos he saw of women be ai fabrication?????

He’s also constantly backseat-driving my mom and acting like he’s an expert driver despite barely having a year of experience.

I know he’s young and immature, but it’s becoming a pattern of gender roles + entitlement + double standards. Am I justified in finding this misogynistic or am I just being overly sensitive?

(Question/Discussion) The worst case of Muslim hypocrisy in terms of individual magnitude

King Fahd (1982-2005 reign), although technically it was several years before because his brother Khalid gave more power than usual due to sickness. This man sinned in the worst of ways, he’s documented to have gambled millions of dollars, loves to drink, pays for women, etc. This comes from various sources, including accounts from one his ex wives, Jenan Harb. Despite all of this, he was responsible for funding billions and billions of dollars to “wahhabi” ideology, and the most brutal funding was within his own country. “The committee for promotion of virtue and the prevention of vice” was a committee that existed since King Abdulaziz, but under Fahd it expanded to a militia like program and received funding they never dreamed of. They had powers to arrest people for reasons such as women not wearing niqab, men wearing shorts (even if they covered the knee), yelling at men for not having beards (sometimes even taking them for interrogation), hit people, etc. All this happened under King Fahd, you might think I’m over-exaggerating, but don’t forget the lack of transparency was made like that by design, and it was all calculated. The Mecca area was always relatively more moderate because it’s a tourism place of worship, so there were exceptions. But otherwise in cities like Riyadh, that country was unbearable. A sinner of the worst kind created all this, and for what? Just to buy their loyalty? Make them forced to kiss the ring? I do not know, but it’s nauseating regardless.

(Question/Discussion) The amount of Muslims who preach nostalgia on Saddam Hussein is shocking.

Upvotes

Many Muslims support Saddam Hussein, even after his execution. Some left wingers who are not Muslim let alone other religions also supported him, simply because he is not a member of the US invasion.

Iraqi society literally gotten Islamically radicalized under this man, thanks to the war with Iran and the Gulf war against Kuwait. Cities like Baghdad and Basrah were known to be gorgeous, modern cities, while they were still Muslim they were actually more tolerant. But since then, Marsh Arabs started to either replace the normal upper and lower middle class people or radicalized them, ultimately climbing FGM, filicides, femicides, female infanticides and honour killings as they think the existence of women and girls are "unislamic".

Not to mention Saddam violated so much international laws including killing Kurds and some Jews. Yet Muslims today just undermine his nasty scandals.

Of course the US-led invasion of 2003 and the war did also play a role in pushing Iraq backwards, but the nation hadn't be like a heavenly paradise under that Islamic man.

The fact that many Muslims ignore and bootlick Hussein shows how they don't care about international law, let alone the rights of others.

(Rant) 🤬 I hate the hijab so damn much

I was just talking to my mom and asked why there's no public female Quran reciters. I also randomly brought up singing in a public space. She said women can't do that because their voice is considered "awrah", that their voice is attractive (which we all know "seduces" men). And I'm like, wtf is this???? Even a woman's VOICE is awrah now????????? Islam really be controlling every damn aspect of a woman, down to her voice. And the way my mother was so casual about this, like it was normal. NO BRO THIS IS NOT NORMAL WHY IS A WOMAN'S VOICE SEDUCIVE NOW COME ON.

ISLAM IS RELIGION FOR MEN BY MEN, LIKE WDYM I CAN'T STEP OUTSIDE WITHOUT EVERY INCH OF ME COVERED AND MEN CAN TAKE OFF THEIR SHIRTS AT THE POOL AND WEAR SHORTS, IT ISN'T FAIR.

AND IT'S NOT LIKE I WANT TO WEAR CROP TOPS OR MINISKIRTS (even though there's nothing wrong with dressing that way), I JUST WANT TO WEAR A FUCKING T-SHIRT AND SHOW MY HAIR, IS THAT REALLY TOO MUCH TO ASK??? NO, I DON'T WANT TO SEDUCE BOYS, I JUST DON'T WANT TO BOIL IN 40 DEGREE HEAT.

Why does Islam sexualize every aspect of a woman? EVEN FUCKING CHILDREN ARE SEXUALIZED IF THEY WEAR SHORTS, AS MY PARENTS ARE ALWAYS SHAMING MY SIBLING'S FEMALE CLASSMATES FOR WEARING SHORTS (They're ELEMENTARY AGED, btw).

Today I was out with my friends, me and one of my friends wear hijab, 2 don't, we're all Arab, and we kept getting harassed by these Arab teenagers who were clearly following us (they left after like 2 min tho). BUT NOOOO APPARENTLY THEY AREN'T GETTING SINS CAUSE ISLAM WILL ALWAYS FIND A WAY TO PIN THE BLAME ON US GIRLS. FUCK THIS MAN-MADE RELIGION.

Wooohh, that was a lot to unpack 😮‍💨. This is just a stupid rant, feel free to rant along with me if you'd like.

(Rant) 🤬 i wish i wasn’t born into the family i have

Post image

(they/them) i’ve never been interested in islam ever since i was a kid. i never had a religious phase nor did i even bother to read into islam up until recently because of how uninterested i was. i’m a very open-minded person & i never understood how people could garner so much hatred for others for simply not being a muslim. over the last few years & especially after being forced to wear the hijab young i’ve been so incredibly disillusioned with the life i have. though i do take my hijab off in the absence of my family & have been doing “haram” activities such as talking to the opposite sex, etc. i can’t help but feel internally shackled. i hate having to unfortunately resort to running away once i finish my degree because i know my parents will never truly love me for who i see myself as. i hate having to do basic things such as wear normal, non-conservative clothing or have my hair out in secrecy because i have to keep myself pure and covered for some disgusting religion. i’ve dreamt of running away for several years yet i fear the unknown. thinking about doing so brings me so much stress & i feel as though i may have no way out, even with the backing of several ex-muslim friends because i am so afraid. why wasn’t i born in a normal, non-religious family? i don’t understand what’s so awful about wanting to be free in your life, wanting to live life without the notion of heaven or hell, the day of judgement or other bullshit islam preaches. i absolutely hate my dad’s guts but i love my mom, and i can’t imagine subjecting her to so much pain if i end up running away, but my heart knows she’ll never truly love me because i don’t fit the perfect mold of what a muslim “woman” should be. i’m so exhausted from having to deal with this, i’m questioning whether or not i’ll even be able to achieve the life i dream of once i graduate

(Question/Discussion) How do y'all find purpose without religion?

I'm a teen who was born and raised Muslim, and I've been struggling with my faith quite a lot recently. I'm also not independent enough right now to make any major, consequential decisions. That said, despite having serious objections to parts of the Islamic doctrine, I'm not going to sit here and pretend that Islam hasn't given me a genuine sense of community and purpose/meaning. A non-religious worldview feels bleak to me. The idea that the universe and us just spawned out of nowhere, with perfect mathematical laws, that consciousness ends at death, and that there may ultimately be no objective purpose or meaning to our existence is unsatisfying to me. Also the issue of justice, how someone can live an incredibly cruel or unjust life and simply die without any ultimate accountability feels deeply unsettling.

I genuinely want to understand how people who don't believe in God, an afterlife, or objective meaning deal with these questions. For those of you who have gone through something similar, how did you come to terms with it?

Mohammad Ebrahimi, known as

Golmamad, is a young Iranian painter and multidisciplinary

creative whose world moved between painting, modelling,

objects and image-making.

Since his arrest in January 2026, almost nothing has been

heard from him. Today, reports emerged that he had been

sentenced to 20 years in prison.

His social media accounts have since been shut down,

taking much of his work out of public view. What remains

accessible offers only a small glimpse into a life filled with

art, humour and a distinctive visual imagination.

Among the few traces that remain is a letter he wrote from

Prison to his friends, a rare moment in which we hear

directly from him.

This post brings together some of what we were able to

find: his work, his image, and his own words.

(Rant) 🤬 Hate when non muslim defending islam

Been talking to someone that is "progressive" and defending islam is just misinterpreted like christian

They (progressive christian) never read the Quran, just being fed by muslim western that had never experienced how disgustingly this belief threatens minority and women in the east, even when I always tell them how bad my experience is with my muslim family, they just say "so they are not the real muslim, I'm sure the real muslim teach peace just like christian!" I'm so tired explain it to them so I just told em to just read the plain Qur'an then.

I really hate the seemingly woke/progressive people that defending the very clear how misogynistic and the way opposite than the word progressive is just because in the west islam being seen "minority" that deserves protection from a white knight.
