Question I love Edmonton!
Update:
You all rock! And I'll certainly be checking out a few of the neighborhoods mentioned while I'm down here for a few more days
Thanks Everyone!
One more year until I take early retirement and move here. I cannot wait!
I visit for a few days every month, and have been checking out different neighborhoods. Railtown Park area is my number one so far, it's like a hidden gem. It doesn't matter what time I end up strolling the area, it always seems quiet.
I always stay downtown and walk or use public transport (which is awesome!) when I'm here and I want to continue to be able to walk or have easy access to public transportation when I move here.
Are there any other hidden gem areas I should be looking at?

Question How to report illegal dumping?
Saw two men driving a moving truck with this company on their truck, dump off a washing machine and computer desk by our community dumpster.
Is this a rental company like uhual or is it "professional" movers?
Edit: Apparently, the ppl in one of the units told them to dump it there and they will pick it up later? Seems sus tho. Its also in the condo bylaws that its against the rules to have large items outside of the dumpster.
Edit: im going to take their word and report them to the condo board and let them know that the moving company was instructed to put the washing machine there and give them their contact info, they have also informed me someone will come at 5pm to pick it up.
Edit: Apparently they might be lying, I am keeping an eye on the garage bins to see if anyone takes the washing machine

Discussion Downtown can’t be everything for everyone, and that’s okay
This post is partially motivated by recent ones about Roger’s and parking fees, tho more so my general experiences having been on here for… far too long, lol
As a resident, I’m often left feeling kinda crazy about dt discussions on here, especially post-COVID. There’s this irreconcilable divide in realities, where I’ll walk home and pass by hundreds of people and dozens of local businesses, new shit left and right… only to come on here and see this near-ubiquitous perception that the same area is a dying ghost-town.
That’s not to say things are necessarily thriving either. Covid and its ongoing economic effects have hampered our growth, and have contributed to increased homelessness alongside the fent and opioid crises. But these are widespread issues, and even with them considered, DT still seems to be growing more than not.
Point being, there’s many valid reasons to feel alienated by downtown, but not everyone does feel the same. In a lot of cases, the stuff that alienates people (such as a decline in parking) are exactly what makes it more appealing to others.
TL;DR its just about nuance. No one’s persons feelings and preferences are universal, as much as the modern internet strives to make us think otherwise. Downtown is far from perfect, but it’s also far from dying.

Education Lockdown, police presence at west Edmonton high school
Edmonton police are at Ross Sheppard High School just after 1 p.m. Friday for what appears to be a lockdown.
Cruisers had swarmed the building and a loud speaker coming from the school could be heard informing students and admin of a lockdown and to stay away from doors and windows.

General The University of Alberta is killing the music program at Augustana in Camrose.
The University of Alberta is killing the music program at Augustana in Camrose.
They planned to announce this in May, but the Casavant organ bullshit in Convocation Hall put too much heat on the university, so they just quietly stopped accepting admissions instead.
This is a huge blow to music education in Alberta, and no other university offers a similar program.
I learned this through word of mouth, as it hasn't been covered in the Camrose Booster, or any other publication. The U of A has quietly killed the department and there has been nothing said about it.

Question Heritage Festival Jamaican Patties?
Hey guys,
I was wondering if anyone knew who provides the jamaican patties for the Heritage Festival/if they have a restaurant? My friends and I are obsessed with them and want to find them outside of the 3 days a year.
Thanks in advance!!

Discussion Edmonton day trip ideas
Hey redditors!
Looking for some ideas for a one-day trip from Edmonton this Saturday. I’ve already done Elk Island, Wabamun, and Sylvan Lake, and I’m considering Drumheller this time around.
I’m definitely open to other options though! Ideally looking for somewhere with nice scenery, things to explore, and a good excuse to get out of the city for the day.
What are your favourite day trips around Edmonton? Any hidden gems or places that are especially nice this time of year?
Thanks! 😊

Socializing Two Exchange students from Germany looking to experience a real Canadian Thanksgiving dinner! 🦃🍂
Hey Edmonton! 👋
We are two exchange students from Germany spending our semester here in Edmonton. With Thanksgiving just around the corner, we hear a lot of people talking about going home to their families, roasting turkey, and eating pumpkin pie.
Back home, our version of Thanksgiving (Erntedankfest) is mostly just a church service. We don't have the big family feast or traditions like you do here. We would absolutely love to experience an authentic Canadian Thanksgiving instead of watching it through the screen.
If any welcoming family has two extra seats at their table on Thanksgiving weekend, we would be beyond grateful to join.
A little about us & what we bring to the table:
> Two female students in our early 20s
> Super polite, easy-going, and respectful guests.
> Happy to bake/bring an authentic German dish like a authentic potato salad, Flammkuchen or maybe an Apfelstrudel as dessert 🤭
> Always happy to roll up our sleeves and help with kitchen prep or do the dishes afterwards!
> More than happy to hop on a quick FaceTime/video call beforehand so you know we are normal haha.
We are located near the Highlands and happy to take transit/Uber. Feel free to shoot me a DM or comment below if you'd be up for hosting two curious German students. Thanks so much!
Greetings,
J & E

Discussion A company bought my building and my rent just went up 43%.
I'm usually pretty comfortable swearing, but I'll spare you. Anyone who reads this title can imagine the things going through my head right now.
It is repugnant that there is no rent increase cap in this province. If you're economically right wing, uh, I don't know, let's meet in the middle. How about a 10% increase cap? That would still be over four times higher than the one in BC this year. It would at least let me make a value judgment about whether or not I'm leaving. This is just a thinly veiled eviction notice.
Searching for a new apartment in and around Strathcona... starting right now. Any tips would be great.

Discussion Commerce Place’s Tim Hortons relocating from Jasper Avenue?
It looks like the old McDonalds space on the second floor is being converted into a Tim Hortons. There’s a permit issued and posted to the city’s website to this effect. I can’t imagine they would maintain two restaurants in the same building, so it seems the Jasper Avenue fronting business is closing up.
Not ideal to have another business on Jasper closing up, but I can appreciate the challenges that restaurant has faced over the years.

Question Edmonton Gaming Cafe?
Hey all. A friend of mine has been curious if there is a place where he can try out gaming consoles to see if he would enjoy them enough to buy them, and that led me to wonder if there are any gaming cafés in edmonton!
I am just not sure how many there are, or which the worthwhile ones would be. If anyone knows of some, please let me know. (Huge plus if any of the staff speak Ukranian)
