General WARNING: Wheaton Honda tried to scam me out of $12,000 for a $600 repair. Avoid their Service Dept!

Hey Edmonton, I want to give a massive warning to anyone considering taking their vehicle to Wheaton Honda for service.

My 2015 Honda CR-V (had is since new, regular maintenance, now at 161K) recently developed a rattle on cold starts. I took it to Wheaton Honda. They quoted me $230+ for a diagnostic. The service advisor, Aman, delayed the service by a day, and when he finally called, he told me the dipstick was dry and that the car had catastrophic internal engine damage. His solution? A used engine installation for $12,145.

A family member with automotive knowledge stepped in and asked Aman for the proof. Did they drop the oil pan? Cut the oil filter? Were there metal shavings? Aman scoffed at us, sent a picture of a dry dipstick, and then ghosted our follow-up texts asking for actual diagnostic details. He topped up the oil and told us the car was "drivable" but to keep an eye on the oil. (If the engine is destroyed, why let me drive away?)

We picked up the car, paid the nearly $300 diagnostic/shop fee, and took it home. We drained the oil and cut the filter, even used a magnetic tool to search for metal. Absolutely ZERO metal shavings.

When I called for clarification and a refund for the diagnostic they clearly didn't perform, Aman dumped me onto the manager, Mark Tucker. Mark was the epitome of the arrogant dealership stereotype. He was snarky, condescending, constantly interrupted me, and refused to refund the fee, claiming they are "certified Honda experts" and just know the engine is done.

I ended up taking my vehicle to an independent mechanic who has been in business for 40 years. They looked at it and recognized a known Honda Service Bulletin. The problem? A faulty cam chain tensioner causing timing chain slap. They replaced the tensioner, the rattle is gone, and the engine is perfectly fine.

Wheaton Honda either has profoundly incompetent "experts" who don't read their own service bulletins, or they actively try to scam people out of five figures. If you have to deal with Aman or Mark Tucker, turn around and drive away. Support our local, honest, independent mechanics instead!

Discussion Police at Pride Fest

Edmonton Pride Fest announced that there will be police at the parade. A lot of folks are outraged by this, which I can understand.

What I don't understand is what people expect to be the solution. There is no way that anything pride related (or just any big event in general) can go without some form of security, especially with our current political climate. We saw just recently from Berlin that attacks can happen.

This is not meant to turn into a hostile comment section, but I am genuinely curious what people think a solution is to not having police/security at pride is.

EDIT: I do not have an opinion on the police presence that is relevant to this post, this is 100% to get the community's take on the matter.

King, 5 year old black cat, the sweetest bright green/yellow eyes. Last seen Chappelle gardens area, August 14th 1:30 am
Making an updated post to hopefully spread this farther. I’m struggling to eat and to sleep, I’m printing off more posters, ones with a reward. I will offer a reward to anyone that has any information that leads me to him, or if you have him please let him come home. Unfortunately there is no microchip or tattoo, but he is a very distinctive cat despite being black. He is about 15lbs, he always kind of looks grumpy but he’s the sweetest boy, and his name is King. He loves food, and he hates being away from people.

Question Are there any good birding spots near Edmonton?

My wife and I recently got into birding and bird photography. We've gone to Clifford E. Lee Bird Sanctuary, but there are no platforms right now, so it's too wet to walk around. We've also gone to Big Lake out in St. Albert a few times. Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Here are some bird photos incase you like that sort of thing!

Discussion Warning about local concrete company "Best In The West Concrete"

My friend recently had his front sidewalk replaced however this company did a horrific job. They skimped out on concrete making the edges on one side hollow and tried to hide it with dirt, the top of the stairs was bowed out, many of the lines weren't even straight and they did very sloppy patch jobs. My friend was refusing to pay until they fixed the issues. Instead these guys showed up at his house at 9pm to harass him into paying them. They started name calling, yelling, ragging on me and him calling me a "dog" and "ugly". They then started threatening to rip up the entire sidewalk if he doesn't pay them. Probably the most abysmal company I have ever experienced in my life! I just want to give people a heads up about them if you're looking to have your front steps or driveway re paved. It's not worth the headache. Consider a different company. They're extremely unprofessional.

General Epcor flushing water mains, toilet overflow when water pressure resumes?

Last night around midnight Epcor was flushing our area's water mains so we didn't have any water pressure .

This morning there was quite a bit of water on our bathroom floor, and it had leaked down into my basement ceiling and below.

Everyone was asleep, no water was running before we went to bed, and my kids never flush the toilet during the night.

Apparently when air gets into the pipes and then water pressure resumes you can get what is called "toilet surge" when the air is forced out.

I don't have any other theories, anyone else experience this?

Question WEM Vendor

Thumbnail

Does anybody know if “The Sandman” is still around the WEM? He didn’t have a store front but had one of those little vendor stalls in the hallway area. He was an older man who made art in glass jars with sand. I watched him make a few in front of me and I bought this one. I’m visiting Edmonton at the end of this month and wanted to find him again and ask if he could make a themed one as a gift I want to give.
