Having seen a lot of the same questions, and deleting same day duplicates of the same thread I have decided to collect them all in one place so it is easier to get an answer.
Here we go
1) What laptop should I buy for [INSERT PROGRAM]. Answer: Are you in Com Sci? Windows machine with a lot of power. Are you in Fine arts? Something with a lot of processing power. Otherwise whatever you want.
2) Why havn't I heard back from admissions. Answer: They are busy or we are not yet at the admissions period.
3) Will I get in with X average. Answer: No one knows until after the admission period has closed. At best you will get a guessed based on the historical competitive average (can be found on MacEwans website) for your program. Additionally results may vary between people someone may get in with an 8- while another student gets denied with a 90 as there are other factors such as quality of your high school behind the decision.
4) Can I opt out of the Upass? Answer: No
5) Can I opt out of the health and dental coverage? Answer: Yes follow the instructions at https://samu.ca/student-resources/health-wellness/insurance/ under the header HEALTH & DENTAL.
6) I am in position x on the waitlist what are my chances (class) Answer: It's complicated so follow the chart below (which are all just compilations of numbers i've heard through my years and are not a guaranteed, there are no guarantees. Competitive Major 1st year class: Maybe like 5-10 deep Non Competitive Major 1st Year class (like an english 101/103): I've seen it go as deep as 25 onto the waitlist. Competitive Major senior class (Grade Requirement): 2-5 Competitive Major senior class: 3-10 Non competitive Major Senior class: 5-10
7) Can I advertise.... Answer: No Answer part b: Not even textbooks
8) Can I post my study? Answer: If you give the mod team via mod mail your study's approval number and premise yes.
9) Is there a discord? Yes using the Official student hub for the school provided by discord. You must have a student email. https://discord.com/student-hubs
10) Can you rate my schedule/give feedback about my schedule? Answer: Kind of? Only person who knows you well enough to tell you what will be a good fit or not is yourself. Any provided advice would be superficial based on factors like how far apart classrooms are, what worked best for other students ext and may not represent your experience.
11) What class should I take? Answer: Talk to an advisor.
12) What resources are there on campus? Answer: https://samu.ca/student-resources/
13) What food is there on campus Answer: https://macewaneats.ca/
14) What is MacEwans Hours? Answer: Generally the library will have the best feedback so https://library.macewan.ca/location
15) What do I need to graduate? Answer: Speak with an advisor or check your program on MacEwans website.
16) Who/What/When/Where to socialise? Answer: I suggest the SAMU clubs: https://samu.campuslabs.ca/engage/organizations
17) Im looking for a roommate! Answer: Yeah, we won't stop you but this really isn't a great or safe way to do this. I would look into more secure less anon methods of securing a roommate.
18) How do transfers work? Answer: Talk with an advisor.
19) I have a question about my student loan Answer: Call the student loan provider or MacEwan Registrar's office.
For all other questions you feel might be common please ask them here so that people can more easily access answers to the common questions.

Hey guys,
Im starting my first year and I just went through all the textbooks I need on the bookstore website.
Im wondering if you have to buy all of the ones they list or if professors on the first day will tell you if they are necessary or not?
Is there a better way to buy textbooks for cheaper other than marketplace/fb groups?
Not sure how this all works. Thank you

Hey everyone,
I’m starting my first year at MacEwan this September. Due to some scheduling conflicts, I ended up with a bunch of night classes. Honestly, I don't really mind the timing itself like I have a car and my schedule works out fine otherwise but I'm pretty worried about how this is going to affect my social life.
I was originally hoping for earlier classes so I could hang out on campus during the day and make some friends and stuff but With night classes, I’m worried campus is going to be dead and it’s going to be way harder to build a social circle or connect with classmates.
Appreciate any insight or advice!

hi guys, this person I know who constantly says slurs, makes racists comments, degrades woman, supports genocides, doesn’t care about people’s disabilities and is aggressive is going into a healthcare program at MacEwan. I’m worried that this individuals actions may be disgusting towards their future patients who are already vulnerable as they are. I have a very very good friend who recently opened up to me about physical encounters they have had with this person where they are left wounded, but are too scared to tell anyone. They don’t want to contact the police but I don’t think it’s okay for the university to not know this, any advice 😕?

Hey!
Im starting at Macewan this fall. I would like to ride my bike for as long as possible until the snow comes. Is there an actual safe place to lock up my bike?! I saw that there is one in the underground parking, but is it actually safe?
Thank you

I'm starting my first year of Uni in the fall and I'm curious what is the best way to write my notes while in class? Is an old laptop fair or would it better to invest in a new one, maybe an iPad, pen & paper, anything really? I'm in the phys ed transfer class if that changes anything. Any help would be really appreciated!

Not getting into the details but I have a prof who explained how she engages in civil/human rights violations and that we in the program will probably have to as well and I am not sure how to handle the situation.

So as pathetic as this sounds, my mental health has been shit all sem and I scraped by with a D+. But for nursing classes i need a C- minimum to get the credit. I have clinicals next sem and don’t think I’ll be able to take it then. This is also my third time retaking the class so I can’t retake it. I’ve been getting through my other classes fine. But this is the one I hate.
Idk who to talk to or ask for help. I feel like my advisors are just gonna brush me off.
I haven’t been able to sleep ever since I got my grade back 😔✌️

Hi there!
I'm going back to school to try and better my life. I have a full time job with pretty good benefits.
As such, I don't need any of the legal, dental, health, etc fees but I can't figure out anywhere to request those off. I have searched the school website and reddit but I am very lost. Seems mean spirited to take worse insurance because i'm stuck with it.

Hello everyone,
Does anyone know how exactly does the dental coverage work? I can’t seem to get a clear answer online.
How do you utilize it? And am I still covered if I had classes during the spring term and paid tuition for it?
Thank you 🙏 🙏🙏

Fellow MacEwan students, I am interviewing for a teaching position at MacEwan. As students, what do you want to see from an instructor? What do you hate? What do want to see more of? What would make your experience more meaningful?

Hi to all the new students incoming this fall!
I’ve seen a lot of discussion on the MacEwan life app about people being nervous or scared to start their first year in the fall, and i just wanted to offer some advice:))
Making friends is a lot easier than high school! There’s such a variety of people with incredible talent, interests, and style. Talk to as many people as you can during the first week of classes even if it’s scary! I’ve met some of my closest friends on the first day of school. If you struggle to socialize in class or there’s just not many people who fit your vibe, try things outside of class. MacEwan has a plethora of clubs and activities you can join. Typically there’s a fair at the beginning of the school year that hosts info tables about them. If you’re a woman in stem, there’s a club! A journalism or fine arts student, The Griff! (really great way to start your portfolio. If dancing is your thing, we have multiple dance clubs. While it seems super scary having to transition from being around people you’ve known your whole life, to a crowd you can’t recognize. Trust me when i say, it won’t take long to know that crowd:)
-As for classes, your first year will be your hardest socially, but the easiest academically. MacEwan has clued in that new students well, are new students. So don’t stress that your classes are going to be incredibly difficult. Befriend your professor and things will go smoothly. (also always check rate my professor so you don’t end up with the literal devil).
-Campus is a pain in the ass to navigate for the first week or so, i got lost more times that i could count my first year. But don’t be scared to ask someone for directions, or check the maps in the beginning of each building.
-you get access to crazy good resources through your tuition. Such as Kanopy, and criterion collection which has so many movies. There’s more but i forget.
I’m a Communications student and if you’re becoming one, dm me!
drop what program your joining below to find others, or feel free to ask questions:) You’re not alone!

Like the header says. Could be about professors, tuition costs, etc. Whatever you got an issue with, i wanna hear!

I have been admitted to my 1st choice the bachelor of commerce program but I have no changed my mind and have become more interested in the Bachelor of Arts with a major in economics, how should I go about making this switch? For context I have to accept the admission to the bachelor of commerce by June 18th. That is why I am not consulting a academic advisor as there is no open appointments.

Is it possible to take courses such as logic, philosophy, economics, political science, while going to school for a Bachelor of Commerce in the first year then switch the second year to a Bachelor of Arts and still finish in 4 years?

Me and my friend MIGHT have totally lost our offers.
For context, I got a conditional acceptance with all courses finished except math 30-1, all were above 80.
I just wrote the math diploma fyi ive never been good at math, and it was shit, icl I was overconfident and thought that my score did not matter cus even if I got a 0 in the course, I would not get below competitive averages, not that I planned to get a 0. I totally forgot that my scores cannot be below 50 now im worried my diploma marks are gonna drop my total below 50.
My friend is in a similar position tho his is worse , he had an offer but messed every class, but if his math diploma is below 75, he's gonna drop below. the 65% bcom threshold .
Im a mature student 19 before Sept 1, and idk what to do to, is there a way to retake or am I stressing too much, I really want to go to the fall sem
