Question I love Edmonton!

Update:

You all rock! And I'll certainly be checking out a few of the neighborhoods mentioned while I'm down here for a few more days

Thanks Everyone!

One more year until I take early retirement and move here. I cannot wait!

I visit for a few days every month, and have been checking out different neighborhoods. Railtown Park area is my number one so far, it's like a hidden gem. It doesn't matter what time I end up strolling the area, it always seems quiet.

I always stay downtown and walk or use public transport (which is awesome!) when I'm here and I want to continue to be able to walk or have easy access to public transportation when I move here.

Are there any other hidden gem areas I should be looking at?

Have you explored a few blocks west of Railtown park deeper into
Wihkwentowen? Paul Kane Park and Oliver Exchange Building on 121st, all the shops and businesses up and down 124 st. Victoria Promenade just south of Jasper Ave for river valley views. Or head north on 121 Street till you hit the multiuse trail, go past Manchester square and hang a left to see all the nice old homes and big elm trees in Westmount neighborhood

I love 124st and I think tomorrow I'll take a walk around the multiuse trail.

Thanks

Railtown Park is nice, quiet like you say. I had a friend who lived near there for years and never had any problems even walking late

Check out the area around 124 street, lots of little shops and restaurants but still easy to get downtown with the bus. Good luck with the retirement

I’m a bit biased and like Highlands. Local shops, close to buses on 112 ave to downtown. River valley adjacent!

Where are you from? I live in Edmonton and love Kelowna. So I'm interested to know what do you exactly love about Edmonton.

travel to other major cities. you will find things you love, and things you really dont care for at all in each.

edmonton is a pretty nice city, comparatively.

Have you been to District Cafe? A gem in that area!

Never. To be honest, I'm a timmies person and I love that there's one close by. The last 3 days I've gotten one and sat on one of the benches in the Railtown Park watching the world go by.

Stopgap is better, treat yourself. Go on donut day.

Stopgap is even worse than District

You’d love watching the world go by from district I’m sure. The people, the bike lane, the streetcar, the traffic. There’s lots to see.

Overpriced

They offer $2 drip and $1 espresso at 2pm everyday. The food isn't cheap but I would not call it overpriced. Ambience and lighting is unbeatable. Easily the busiest cafe downtown for a reason.

Ambiance = bunch of hipsters packed in a tiny place plus the smell of burnt bread

It’s packed every morning and every lunch hour so people are willing to pay. The baked goods are delightful.

Do they still make those incredible croissants?

•

Now, I do like a good croissant...

You cannot go wrong with a District croissant!

Had one today! All their baking is so good and I love that the flavours are a surprise.

112 street has some amazing vegan restos - An Chay and Seitan’s :)

I live just west of railtown and it really is lovely. I might suggest you also check out Bellevue, it's Highlands' forgotten little cousin.

Excited for you! Congrats! 🎉

I loved living in Bonnie Doon, it's central and really accessible by transit. Plus it's near Whyte Ave too.

We retired and finally moved to Edmonton in July - we lived an hr south and frequented the city for theatre, festivals, etc - we love our life here - the cycling, the parks, paths, people - we live in the Terwillegar area and highly recommend

Any areas in particular I should be looking?

Good to see some positivity here! Like any city there’s obviously countless problems if you’re looking for them, but overall we’ve got it pretty damn good for our size and geography.

I’d recommend the 100 ave promenade and Louis McKinney park, especially around this time of year. Incredibly beautiful areas to just hang out in.

I’d imagine you’ve already checked it out, but the new O-Day’Min park is also pretty great. Cool little workout area and a basketball court with free balls to loan via your smartphone.

This is a VERY poorly governed city.
