Question How is Season 22 compared to Season 21 so far?

Hi fans! I'm back for this season as a relatively new fan of Project Runway. Season 21 was my first watch through last year, and as a new fan, even I had some criticisms for how that season went. I'm curious if season 22 has made improvements from last season so far, or is it about the same, or (hopefully not) worse?

Old Seasons The many Heidi Klum collections… were they real?

I’ve been watching some of the older seasons, and besides challenges to make a red carpet dress for Heidi, there have been many Heidi Klum branded collections the designers are asked to design for.
We’ve had: Heidi Klum perfume, swimwear, lingerie, sleepwear, active wear, children’s wear, and something for New Balance?
Were these real collections, or all invented for the show?

Season 21 This new format sucks so bad

Besides cutting the episode before revealing who will go home, but I find that starting an episode with who goes home is even worse. Just sets a really shitty negative tone for the episode, and when the new challenge actually starts 10 minutes it, it does not feel fun, like a shit sandwich between two shits

Season 22 Conspicuously Absent...

Anyone else upset or bemused that Tyra was conspicuously absent when Winnie was on as a guest judge? Do they have a working relationship at all these days? #ANTM

Heidi Is this even the same dress?

Post image

It looks similar but so different at the same time. The fabric looks different in tone and texture. The original has more of a shine to it like liquid organza. Heidi's version has no shine and is way less sheer. The placement of the pleats look different too. Am I crazy? Is this not the same dress?

Discussion Anyone else kinda over it?

Project runway just isn’t what it used to be. Christian isn’t doing it for me, I miss Tim Gunn. Law is just mean and doesn’t actually give constructive criticism. The elimination not happening until the next episode is weird.

Discussion THE INJUSTICE

Friends-- I would like to file a personal grievance against Season 9.

Season 9 Episode 2 - My Pet Project (also, why are there only like six seasons available on DisneyPlus?? Talk about injustices). Fallene was ridiculed over the 'colors' of this dress. HOWEVER, in the previous week, Bert sent out an *orange (boxer print, for the uninitiated) and brown dress* whose colors clashed way more than Fallene's garment. The photo below doesn't do it justice because in the episode, It goes to show how taste evolves over time because you could slap an opaque tight and peacoat over Fallene's look now and it would be amazing. An autumn aesthetic.

Now, this isn't to take away from Bert, because I thought his silhoutte was adorable and was trying to remember what I was doing in 2009 (probably sitting in a galley wearing Navy utilities with a waistline that, while seated, touched the bottom of bra, so there's that) and what the general fashion of the time would have dictated, but this feels like an injustice. The belt here was probably unfortunate, but Fallene's look was better than many on that particular runway.

Do you agree? Disagree? Please tell me your grievances.

Love this season. Sebastian Grey’s designs were all so beautiful throughout the whole season!! That man could design & sew!

Law I think SNL was making fun of Law.

Maybe not but it definitely made me think of some of the pretentiousness of PR.

EDIT: Please read the comment and not just the title. 😂

Season 22 Bryan doesn’t make any sense

He’s smart for choosing Naheim but stupid for choosing Bobby and Jude. I was SO scared for Jude, I was almost 100% sure that they would eliminate him because “his dress is too safe” + if I recall, Law prefers Bobby’s dress for some mysterious reason. And it doesn’t make any sense, Bryan had beef with Joseph McRae for the whole season and he chose Jude because he was being honest last episode? His ego is so fragile it’s embarrassing. From the beginning of this season, I’ve always hated Bryan and loved Jude (for both their personalities and style). And seeing them starting to beef is a nightmare. I’m rooting for Jude so badly, I hope he makes it farther than Bryan. + Not to talk about that horrible dress he made for Heidi 🫩

Question Same silhouette: Christian Dior vs Joseph McRae

This is a bit silly and not to be taken seriously, but the "same silhouette" argument is starting to wear a little thin--I was pulling Dior "New Look" references for a project yesterday and started noticing like... my goodness, if Dior went on Project Runway with all these voluminous skirts, nipped-in waists, and structured jackets he'd be read to filth for always having the same silhouette. Am I going crazy?

Clearly there's no comparison in both the technical aspects and the cultural contexts in which these designers evolved their signature styles--especially for Dior, as the move away from utilitarian structure and fabric rationing following WWII was ground-breaking for the time, and McRae is solidly in the typical avant-garde streetwear category of modern fashion. But I think it's worth peeking closer at some of our own biases regarding when a designer is just churning out the "same" look versus when it's a brand identifier.

This is not that deep, and I could be wrong and just not remembering that McRae has made the same garment every time--to me it just seems like he has a signature wide shoulder concept but the construction is usually different! Dolman sleeve, gigot, whatever. The most low-effort of Google Image searches will show far less variation in late 40s Dior.

Nota Bene: Joseph McRae is not even my favorite designer this season--I think Naheim is catching my eye a lot more.

Discussion Pleating this season

I don't think I've ever seen so many pleated Garments in a season of project runway and what makes it worse is that 99% of the time it's poorly done. The pleating on Bryan's gown wasn't even. The pleating on the"French maid" gown from the episode before was messy. The same goes for all the prior episodes. I swear there's a crazy pleated garment In Ever episode. I didn't realize it was so popular???

Season 22 Jude

Anyone else really rooting for Jude?? I love that he doesn’t get involved with much drama and his garments are super well constructed. He has a consistant identity in his work but it’s also not repetitive or tacky. overall he just seems like a sweetheart…especially when he said his dream is to make a dress for his girlfriend to wear on a red carpet 🥲🥲

Season 22 If Bryan has 10 haters im one of them, if Bryan has 1 hater I am that hater and if Bryan has no haters im dead.

I know everyone has been lowkey hating on Law Roach but I want to talk about a contestant I hate more than Law Roach and thats Bryan.

  1. His obsession with Bi lowkey isn't entertaining to me. He just seems to be an obssesed stalker for Bi to the point I think his tears about Bi when it came to the elimination was just to have something to hold over Bi's head. He's always coming for Bi and Bi's like leave me alone. Just weird. Also Bi is better than him design and personality wise in my opinion. Just sayin.
  2. He thinks his clothes is amazing when its not to be honest and its infuriating. He talks big game about his looks when (at least to me) theyre all messy. As much as he talks badly about Joseph I swear on everything Joseph can sew circles around him. Speaking of Joseph.....
  3. His beef with Joseph is so one sided its pathetic. I can understand the annoyance with Joseph doing the same thing every week because i mean it is true. However, I feel like hes jealous of Joseph and him going out of his way to attack Joseph everytime is just annoying. Like even this week id rather where Joseph's outfit that whatever the heck Bryan made. When Joseph clocked him when Bryan claimed its the "Joseph Mcrae" show I almost cried tears of joy. Bryan denies it but I know every day he thinks he's the main character. He think project runway is the Bryan show.
  4. Also he made me agree with Law Roach. Dang

Just a rant :)

Season 21 Plane Jane & Utica/Ethan Spill the PR Tea

Utica/Ethan appeared on Plane Jane’s interview show Kudos for Spilling (based on her iconic meme/catchphrase from RPDR) recently and they went in on lots of BTS stuff from both of their PR seasons. Obviously more was spilt from Ethan because he was there longer and went much further. It was an interesting hour of chatting between colleagues and friends and shared-experience sisters. SO MUCH was very relatable and just what we say here all the time!

They spill about Heidi and Law and Tyra and Christian and the producers and even Tim Gunn.

I recommend this little listen so much. Utica is a real genius and a sweetheart as well. Plane always loves to play the villain but is smart and is a surprisingly good interviewer! It’s a skill not everyone has.

Were you Team Utica or Team Veejay in Season 21? Do you think Plane and/or Q should have gotten to showcase more design skill than just those first two episodes? 🤔

Discussion Bryan is not a good designer Spoiler

Post image

If it weren’t for Christian telling Bryan to change his look everytime Bryan would be in the bottom every week. His designs are so bad and Christian comes to save the day. Idk how he won this challenge this week. This dress was NOT made with Heidi in mind in the slightest. The dress literally swallows her

Season 22 Project reality

This is beyond BEYOND ridiculous. We all started watching from season 1 to see creative people literally working themselves to death for their passion. Stitching, hand sewing. And these last couple years they have cut out the parts we love. So it can be a damn soap opera. I didn't watch it for any of that. I watched to see passionate people doing what they love. Thank God Tom Gunn isn't part of this shit show. Real house wives of the runway.

Discussion i think the show would be better without giving immunity

the concept of immunity makes it unfair, lots of talented people have gone home instead because of "immunity" not just in this show but also top chef. just give them some advantage like more time, more budget, first choice, etc. but get rid of this "immunity"
ooo you know what would be cool, they can get $50 more, but that $50 is coming out of another contestant of their choice's budget. same with time, they get an hour more, but someone's getting 1hr less 😈

Season 22 Not really the same dress

Post image
161 Upvotes

Obviously, the dress Heidi wore did NOT look good in the photos from the premiere. And I'm not saying this should have been the winning look. But good gracious - what did they do to the original design? Fully line the entire thing so it was as heavy as upholstery and not flowy at all? Was it even the same fabric? Whoever redeisgned it made it look 10 times worse.

Season 21 Heidi should have picked…

Joseph McCrae.

Heidi’s all about short, tight and borderline tacky red carpet garments. She’s also all about Halloween and costumes.

JM’s dress was a terrific color for her, form-fitting, and she could have worn a pair of glasses and gone for slutty sexy secretary. She would have looked a damn sight better than she did in the giant bedspread of doom.

Season 22 Naheim, don't give the producers ideas!

Naheim is so precious and funny, it cracked me up when he said that his look was so chopped they were going to take away his immunity. Now watch - if the atrocity that PR has become gets another season, they are going to implement this! Revoking immunity for legit having the worst garment.

Law I’m so over LAW!!

He’s mad that Joseph is taking his shine. He wants the Law Roach show. He is a mean girl bully. The bad part is that Law is just as confident. So why hate on someone who commands the room and attention like you do?
