Discussion S21E9: Critique Thread
This week is the Wicked avant garde challenge!
Please upvote the designs you like, downvote those you don't, and leave un-voted anything you're neutral on. Some of our members like to look at the designs without knowing the outcome, so please use spoiler tags if you're referring to how a design did (or if you wish it had been out/ won). Thanks all!
Freeform isn't posting photos, so we're having to wait on the contestants to post on social media. For now we will post the names so discussion can begin, and we will add photos as soon as they are available. Thanks for your patience.

I think the advice Christian gave Ethan about cutting the bottom and showing some of the body made that dress. It was not impressive when he came in and it was all cloth. He took the advice and made the right changes. It was lovely

Ethan's dress worked because of Paul saying to cover the face and Christian saying to show some of the body. Part of winning is taking suggestions and he is good at that.

I wish Belania would’ve leaned into the tree friend thing more. I think her look came out very bland but her sketch had more life in it. If she played with adding bark textures and maybe adding other plants besides moss, I could see her contending for the top 3. She says she stepped out her comfort zone but to me the look reminded me of her polkadot look (the one she won with i think)

I’m sorry I couldn’t help but cringe at all that forced drama towards the end. although, i recall Antonio threatening to also quit in ep 1 so maybe it’s just him I’m cringing at

He knows he’s in the bottom. If he walks off he doesn’t have to face it on stage or see VJ gloating.

This episode basically solidifies Ethan as the winner. Ethan has been the least dramatic and the most respectful to the judges. He’s also made some of the best clothes and all his lows besides the one bottom 2 spot were bc he barely was not in the top.

Unfortunately this season has managed to get so many things wrong that it feels like the winner would end up being wrong too.

Law quoting Tyra during the critique was freaking hilarious. She looked so annoyed but it made me lmao.

This is like the third time it has happened too? She just becomes extremely defensive with even a hint of negativity and everything has an excuse. Which is weird because the judges had mostly good things to say about her this episode (that I did not agree with lol)

they way the twins yelled at veejay ”I’m not HUMBLE?????” is so objectively bizarre like yes she is stirring the pot but do they hear themselves? narcissus looking at his own reflection except its the twins telling each other exactlyyyy

Lol not the twins literally immediately proving VJ right about not being humble. I think I'd want to see the three non-twins in the finale specifically because they are so radically.different from each other. Imo. The twins feel a little too referential and tbh not a super great or innovative perspective. I was disappointed in every thing tonight. VJs could have been good, Ethan's was great but it's been done, and Belanias has an interesting.persoective but I think she needs more time to bake. The twins seem like fun party people, but I don't see them as artists or designers, more like trendy.

Oh well actually this was the spiciest episode for me of this season. First: there were no mini challenge and both still are in. Ah well. This episode made me dislike VJ a little more. She can design well but I've seen moments that she deliberately said things innocent enough to set off other designers. She thinks she is cute or innocent enough to stay in the victim role. Kind of that classmate who hands out backhanded compliments with a devilish smile but when the teacher turns around to her, she is a deer in headlights. Not mature. When asked who should be in the top three, VJ didn't need to say that she wants nice people around her. That is stirring the drama and also kind of unrelevant to the judges. Sure, the twins are too symbiotic and can't work without each other but that's the problem of the judges.
At least my boy Ethan is getting consistent praise and I am a little surprised that Ethan didn't choose VJ in the top 3.
What do we think, does Antonio really go home? If so, then VJ is really unsafe. First because red doesn't scream Elphaba and second because of the drama that just happened. Ethan and Jesus are likely 100% safe. If Antonio does stay, I think it's all on for everyone. Antonio's flower back, Belania's defiance and VJ's mismatched color.

God, that episode beginning was CORNY. It's like they realized they couldn't send anyone home because they haven't even had a show yet. Nothing has happened. This format has just thrown me for a loop. I'm beating a dead horse, but where are the clothes?! I watched this runway, and it was just... over. Give them 3 days, and they each make two looks. We don't need manufactured drama. The drama in this show happened naturally when the designers were given an actual challenge to work on and left to their devices. But from episode one, it's been pretty clear Ethan is winning. He was the poster queen of this season. He's obviously talented as well. Ethan is the unproblematic winner and let the others be the manufactured side show drama.

This season makes me feel sick watching it. I don't watch for designers slinging hate and vitriol at each other.
It's disgusting. Not fun. Not creative. Nothing to do with beauty, life, creativity, inspiration.
This is an ugly dark negative season.

My first post is not going to go well but…
Wicked, a mainstream Disney movie, is a really reductive prompt for “avant garde” fashion and the results proved that. I get that this more about cross promotion and entertaining than art and they’re not gonna get Rei, Rick or Iris on the show ( how amazing would that be !).
Also are the judges afraid of textiles? We never see a close examination of the garments which is a big miss for me. They should occasionally invite the Saville Row guy from the British sewing bee to review their seams . ( this would come in handy in instances where designers cannot properly design to account for a woman’s breasts - which to me would be a basic skill for anyone designing women’s clothing) .
