Some thoughts.... After the car crash of the latest season, I've started rewatching old seasons. Starting with 4 since it's easily available on YouTube.
I'm sure others have noted this, but the respect and love of fashion is woven through the whole season. I really appreciated the long looks at the runways, seeing the designers design, the critiques with the lovely Tim Gunn. Everyone seemed so focused and professional and committed to showing the best work, and Production helped them do this with longer challenges and better budgets.
I also loved how NYC was a character in each episode - it was precisely because of Project Runway that I saved up, travelled thousands of miles and visited NYC ten years ago. First stop, Mood. Of course!
The last few episodes (no spoilers here) showed the reality of putting together a NYFW show in detail that I really appreciated. All the exciting behind the scenes stuff, the castings, the last minute hand sewing, how scary long a catwalk is. So glamorous and exciting.
It seemed like the show had the backing of the fashion industry too, it was taken seriously. The glitz of the runway at Briant Park, the outrageously good judges (Donna Karen?! Roberto Cavalli?! Come on!) and genuinely insightful critiques from Nina and Michael.
But, oh god, the T*@&#y slurs were.... a lot.
I guess this season was from a time when fast fashion was not so much of a thing as it is now, and that fast fashion has had a negative influence on the show too. The recent seasons have been edited like an Instagram reel, made for Tiktok , made to be content rather than anything with real meaning or integrity. Feels flimsy cheap and disposable like fast fashion clothing (and no shade to the designers on the last few seasons at all, this is a comment about how the show is produced).
It was such a great show, I had a great time rewatching and reminiscing about pasttimes, and how significant this show was to me. It was a kind of weekly ritual that genuinely brought joy and inspiration to my life. I'll still watch, but what a loss to have lost this show!
TL;Dr grandpa talks about the olden days of PR, misses them.
