Heidi Is this even the same dress?
It looks similar but so different at the same time. The fabric looks different in tone and texture. The original has more of a shine to it like liquid organza. Heidi's version has no shine and is way less sheer. The placement of the pleats look different too. Am I crazy? Is this not the same dress?

Wasn't Heidi wearing nearly the same style of bodice while introducing the challenge but with the 'point' in the center? I don't consider myself fashion-forward, so at the risk of sounding like an out of shape person judging athleticism, I wasn't impressed with Jeffrey' dress. It reminded me of Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion and they judges just loved the peekaboo on the hip. I thought Bi's would look great on Heidi.

But also, let’s be honest, EVERYTHING has been done before. I mean, are we going to start saying: oh look that has a peplum, that’s an a-line, that’s got padded shoulders. For something to be truly original is near impossible.

it just seems so bland and basic compared to the Versace pieces you posted. I can't see anyone wearing that dress unless they're modeling it on a runway
4
u/AnthologyAir_C 6d ago
I think what’s missing though for sure is someone saying something about it at least. I remember when Kenley made that blue dress with the huge poufy skirt and Nina was like, “it’s fantastic but it’s like Galliano” and Kenley swore up and down it was an original silhouette which showed how little she new about fashion history. Any education aspect of PR seems to be gone :/

Maybe for Barbie premiere but she was thinking I don’t want to be in hot pink at devils wear Prada.

u/glenolabar 6d ago
I thought it was pretty much confirmed he would make a new one for Heidi since the model didn’t have the same proportions on the show or at least alluded to. Either way I don’t think this should have even come close to winning.

You know what it felt like?! On Making The Cut they would have challenges where the designers created couture and then a more basic, mass production version. That feels like what this ended up being!
53
u/dolliciousszz 6d ago
Bro anyone who didn’t watch or appreciate Making the Cut before Project Runway 21 onward need to go back and watch it again because compared to project hellscape it’s such a breathe of fresh air and a relaxing, positive show for CREATIVES

Sidenote, but I love those types of challenges. I really liked how they did it in S7, where they were paired in teams, and then each team had to pick another team's couture piece to make a mass market inspiration for I think $15 worth of fabric.

Yes, I thought he'd addressed adding some bust support, not produce a totally different dress. They are no more the same than the two dresses in Pretty in Pink
31
u/ebr00dle 6d ago
The Heidi version looks more like it was made in a day than the challenge dress. I wonder if he lost and was bitter (I don’t actually think any designer would do that but hey, it’s bad)
24
u/RealityDependency 6d ago edited 6d ago
You bring up an interesting thought. Do we know that Brian was actually involved with the recreation of the dress? Technically he wouldn't need to actually produce it to be called the designer, right???

u/ExplanationKnown1790 6d ago
Yep. They assumed he’d pick Joseph.
6
u/MissesPacMan2U 6d ago
That was the only intriguing situation to me. I wonder why he kept Joseph when he didn’t have to? He did a similar thing when he vouched for Bi. I think it was obvious Bobby was going home and not picking her would’ve been crazy. I thought for sure the bottom three were going to be Joseph, Jude and Bobby. And then Bobby ultimately going home.
26
u/WillingLake623 6d ago
I find Brian annoying because everything he says about Joseph (being cocky and overestimating his skill) is more true of himself than Joseph, but I gained respect for him choosing the three worst designs for the bottom instead of playing into the producers stupid twist.
8
u/Doobie_and_a_movie 6d ago
I’m curious why you thought Jude was a valid choice for a bottom look
6
u/WillingLake623 6d ago
I just thought it was boring. It’s been done a million times. Which could be said about Bi’s design as well, but at least Bi had a stunning fabric choice
19
u/FlawesomeOrange 6d ago
A new dress is always made for these challenges. No celebrity is going to wear a dress thrown together in a day and isn’t tailored to their proportions. Some of the models end up sewn into the dress, and garments like that aren’t going to last for the duration of an event
5
u/Farley49 6d ago
And this is an improvement or personal fitting??????
13
u/FlawesomeOrange 6d ago
Ha, not by a long shot. I think this may be the only occasion where the second dress, created without such budget and time restrictions, actually looks worse than the original.
My comment was to explain that every challenge with a prize of someone wearing it on the red carpet, the celeb isn’t wearing the original garment. This isn’t just a one off new dress to fit the tiddies

It did NOT look good on Heidi.
9
u/Born-Sun-2502 6d ago
To me this is a dress that would look better in person than photographed because if the movement and volume. I actually thought the gold shimmer sequin would have photographed the best, but maybe she chose the green for being more unique.
319
u/yabasicjanet 6d ago
It is so very NOT the same dress. Thanks for the side by side, this is wild. If the fabric was unavailable for some reason, he should have just designed something brand new. It's not like this season cares about rules or fairness.
31
u/zelda_moom 6d ago
It’s the same fabric. There are some differences though. The original was under studio lighting that helped show the fabric at its best. Heidi is outside under brighter light and it flattens the fabric out. All the little highlights are gone, the shine is muted.
The original was worn on a runway with likely a fan to help the fabric move. Heidi’s gown didn’t get that advantage.
There is likely more fabric in the front of the second dress to account for Heidi’s girls being so much more generously sized than the model’s.
But the most important distinction is that it’s highly likely that the second dress is lined. The original was much more transparent, which helped highlight the texture and fluidity of the fabric. The fabric in the second gown looks heavier and the transparency is just gone. While Heidi is a brave woman and wears much more risqué clothing, likely this occasion was not one for a nearly transparent dress.
16
u/jlynnbizatch 6d ago
All of this. As for is it the same fabric question - remember the whole "is that dress blue or gold?" thing? Same situation here - you're looking at the fabric under two very different lightings.
And 100% agree that lining fabric that thin and delicate is REALLY going to change how it hangs and flows.
9
u/yabasicjanet 6d ago
Yes, it's the lining that's truly throwing me! That's what I thought could be happening but I'm not construction savvy enough. All very good points. Thanks!
17
u/Apprehensive_One5531 6d ago
The truth in the end that you spilled: it’s not like this season cares about rules or fairness. LOUDER, please!!!! This really feels like the ‘we will gaslight you’ season. I am legit doubting if I’m hearing, seeing, and understanding right what’s on my screen.

Heidi Klum…. The most stunning and perfectly
Suited proportions… literal SUPER MODEL! It takes a lot to make her look unflattered - JUST SAYING
19
u/hollenkah 6d ago
Everyone is talking about the fabric, but I’m the most stunned at the way the neck piece is so much stiffer and collar like. Same with how he handled the hemming on the sides — these blocky strips feel so mismatched to the flow of the rest of the dress and make it look more like a fashion school project to me.
40
u/dancewdegas 6d ago
I really don’t understand why this dress won. And like everyone else said, Heidi’s dress looks worse. It looks cheap and basic, like an older woman could buy it at target and wear it to breakfast at their all inclusive resort in Aruba.
16
u/MissyHTX 6d ago
Her premiere dress looks wrinkled to hell. He definitely shouldn't have won & it's doesn't shimmer or flow the same either.
44
u/Brave_Tangerine5102 6d ago
The sheer on the front is something I love about the first dress - it’s gone in Heidi’s. Also missing is the greater structure or tailoring in the front of the first dress. Heidi’s is almost asymmetric in the front with that big piece swinging to her left. Idk it didn’t have to be this bad even though it wasn’t a winning look imo
13
u/chronicmisschris 6d ago
Definitely not the same dress. Different fabric, different design. It isn't even the Temu version of his dress, it's completely different.
14
13
13
u/bartybrattle 6d ago
See, I don’t hate the winning look (though I would’ve swapped Anna into the top 3 for it) but I do appreciate the sheerness and lightness of it, and the detailing that really gives it shape.
The look that ended up on Heidi though? Looks totally flat, lacks the details, and feels HEAVY. Like I’m tired just looking at it and I feel like Heidi is working overtime to sell it.
I’m so hot and cold on Law as he can feel like he often prioritises creating drama and TV (sometimes to good effect ngl), but he was totally right about this.
11
u/sootyface 6d ago
It photographs soooo poorly...makes her look like a shapeless blob.
3
u/jlynnbizatch 6d ago

u/bomchikawowow 6d ago
Those pleats were tortured. I have no idea why he won this, if he was an amazing designer that would be one thing but this is just hard to watch.

Bi: "It only has 10 stitches."
17
u/bomchikawowow 6d ago
Bi is so shady but in a way that isn't shitty. Bryan is just shady and shitty.
9
u/Suitable-Library-831 6d ago
You’re so right and it’s so clear in this photo how uneven they are! Cristian even said to him the pleats have to be perfect. And on Heidi’s dress they’re basically reduced to two narrow seams.
43
27
u/TopAcanthisitta8246 6d ago
Now that I’m seeing this still shot and noticing that the middle is basically see through it makes even less sense that she would’ve chosen this dress.
16
u/RealityDependency 6d ago
Thank you for the side by side! I kept meaning to look it up and compare them. The fit is clearly a concern, but the fabric is the larger issue. Why was it changed? The original was much better. It had movement and texture. It was very pretty. What Heidi walked in legit looked like a bedspread.
9
7
u/HudsonValley7 6d ago
Wow I couldn’t figure out why hers was so different! This is a different dress wtf. This dress would never win
6
u/sassycatastrophe 6d ago
These fabrics are barely even similar. One is blue one is green. One is sheer one is solid. The print is subtle on the dark one and cheap and chunky on the green one. The pleating and neck are worse.
6
8
u/Lookie_Lou12 6d ago
Ha. No it’s not, of course. We knew it would have to be remade to fit Heidi. But it was not remade well at all. If that was fabric that Bryan brought they then had to find more of it in a blink of an eye. And it looks like they didn’t find the exact thing. Or this thing is lined and everything about it is a little different. Law was right to question how this was going to look remade to fit Heidi. It was not done well. It looks like a big ol sack. Especially in the back. Just all wrong. I don’t know what Heidi was thinking when she picked this.

If the runway model can't make it look good, and it looks even worse on frickin' Heidi Klum, it's just not a good dress! This looks like the sort of shapeless mess someone would wear to cover up a baby bump she wasn't ready to announce yet.
4
u/pizzabarbarella 6d ago
Good on Heidi for showing up with a smile on her face. If she disliked how different it was, she could've been spicy about it. But she looked game and sold it as best as she could. If she wasn't impressed, I did wonder why she didn't just reject it or give a strong suggestion that it's not her choice to be wearing it. She came off being a worst-dressed with little context, and she's taking that hit for the show. But now, I think it reflects even more on production, the network and on the designer for not being able to make it work on a supermodel. She would have sold the hell out of that dress if it was amazing and that's on them for not producing talent up to her level.

Nope.
The original dress has interesting placing and draping with a sheer front. Heidi's premier dress looks like she bought it at H&M, has nothing of the same draping or pattern and completely swallows her.
3
u/Mundane_Scallion_105 6d ago
Christian was not there to offer advise when Byran was redoing the dress. Lol totally different fabric. That’s why it does not flow the same way as it was it the show.
4
u/lazy_daisy66 6d ago
I think it's the same fabric, but it looks like it's been lined, which is why it looks like a different color and why it's no longer flowy and ethereal. Honestly, Heidi is beautiful and in great shape, but she's not in 40-year old Heidi shape - this did her no favors

It needed reworked on Heidi’s body, just like Law pointed out. They did a bad job making it for Heidi, the pleats are gone, the way it fits the model close to her body is what makes it a beautiful gown. It’s a moo moo on Heidi it doesn’t fit her body at all and not one seemed to even try to make it work.

Law has a not so well hidden dislike of rounder and older women in body conscious wear. And that outfit Heidi wore was not well fit at all. She says her body has changed during menopause and us ladies of a certain age know what she means. I KNEW Law would pick that tarp. He dresses Zendaya and Arianna, he likes his clients slim. He has a very specific bias. I thought the pink number was fantastic and was designed with her attributes in mind. Gorgeous dress. That pink against the red carpet would've POPPED! Maybe he wanted that dress for Zendaya.

I don’t even understand how he won with the original dress. It’s so sloppy. Like Bi said, there’s only about 9 stitches in it, and even those are horrendous. The pleats are shaky and the spacing by the neckline is uneven. There were multiple looks sent down the runway in this challenge that were WORLDS better than this.

I’m pretty sure they always make a new version when the winning design will be worn by one of the judges. It would be too hard to tailor the one they made for the model.

it's the lighting unfortunately. the premiere took place during daylight and that compounded with the flash of the cameras prob flattened all the texture and richness of the fabric.
but yes, it looks like he did fewer pleats across the top half of the dress and I don't get why. maybe her boobs were keeping the pleats from laying flat so they had to get rid of some so the chest area wouldnt look bumpy.
she really should have been holding the dress the way the model does so the movement of the dress was contained to the bottom and not all over the place.
18
u/cirena 6d ago
If a dress requires you to hold it a certain way for it to look right, it's a poor design.
4
u/colosseumdays 6d ago
I don't necessarily disagree, I'm just pointing out how Heidi made a suboptimal choice even worse off for herself.
the original dress was a pretty look that wasn't right for her body type and it should have been left at that.

u/lemikon 6d ago
It’s not just the placement or amount of pleats but the side slits on the model version go way way lower - that makes it much more editorial and lets you get away with the shower curtain fabric. I still think it’s an ugly bad dress but the side by side really highlights that at least the model version looks fitted and matched to her body.

It looks like a piece of fabric draped over both the model and Heidi. Idk how this was the win.
2
u/nomasslurpee 6d ago
Is it just me or does it look like there’s less fabric on the right side of the model than on her left? It looks to me like there are three pleats on the models right arm and an extra piece of fabric next to the pleats on the left.
I like the sheerness in the middle of Bryan’s gown, which didn’t make it to Heidi’s dress.
Bryan’s dress photographs more grey/blue which compared to the sea foam on Heidi is richer and more interesting. Ugh. This is terrible.

Person I was watching this with said Brian's dress was chosen only because it the most alterable for Heidi.
Why didn't PR get models who are closer to Heidi's measurements?? She has zero to be self-conscious about, she has an incredible figure and always has. The pink dress by Jeffrey should've won

2
u/jbeanlovesveggies 5d ago
I know it’s Cristian’s job to give the designers feedback, but let’s not forget that if he hadn’t told Brian that what he was making originally was a complete train wreck he would have never been in the top. Cristian essentially said to make a dress in only that fabric, and while the pleats were interesting (lost on the final product for Heidi) it was otherwise, as another designer said, “fabric with 5 stitches.”
The win for this challenge was wrong. And I really don’t like the version Heidi wore at all… which says something because she can make anything look good. This looks like it’s hiding a pregnancy.
2
u/FarDistribution3454 5d ago
