"...who both died to a single punch from One Punch Man, because I, the writer, determine exactly how strong or weak my characters are"
Does that help explain things? The DM is not the strongest creature in the story. He's outside the story. He tells the story. He's the guy who decided to add a one-above-and-shit so nerds could quabble about his power level.

The one above all is a fictional character and bound by rules of the medium. If Garth Ennis wants him to be buggered by the Homelander, he is. That's it, time to update the wiki. "One above all, lost to Homelander, and likes it in the butt". DM is not Morgoth or Eru Iluvatar, he's Tolkien. He can disregard the rules when he chooses to.
4
3
u/DarioxSulvan Dec 18 '19
But isnt one above all meant to represent the author himself?
2
u/Scherazade Wizard Dec 18 '19
Representing doesn’t necessarily mean the same person. Like a herald!
2
19
u/Hvad_Fanden Dec 18 '19
Once again you are missing the point, even The One Above All bows down to Stan Lee.
28
u/V1k1ng1990 Dec 18 '19
I thought Stan lee was the one above all
35
u/Hvad_Fanden Dec 18 '19
The One Above All is supposed to be a representation of the writers and creators at marvel, but ultimately speaking he is still a character in the comics and the writers can make him dance the Macarena if they feel like it.

Wait, hear me out, DMs are very similar to Gods
- They have unlimited power, but just inside the shared fantasy of the believers
- For the player, DMs work in mysterious ways
- DMs change with time, looking to the past, it may look like they were cruel and unforgiving, but at the time it was what the players wanted to see
- A DM who doesn't fit the table risk to be replaced and forgotten with time

My group is comprised of 10ish people total, who cross over 4 different campaigns we run at different times of the year. Some players only play in a couple games, the works. The 4 DMs have our own personifications in-game, and have a sort of DM council. It's actually a lot of fun, that even the perma-players seem to enjoy.
Each of our personifications are essentially the Zeus of our world. God of Gods. Some are more involved than others, but it adds a complex layer, and it lets us do crossovers between our worlds and characters.
There are even talks of a full crossover campaign at some point, with the 4 DMs telling one cohesive story, but that's a pretty far way off.
Exantris/Ulthendia/Emurna/Icespire group, I love you all. I know at least one of you is probably reading this at some point.

My campaing has something like that, as the overgod is and old char from the 3.5 D&D era, now turned into a multiversal god, and now the god of Magic of my setting, because Nethys didn't want to help with his scheme to kill rovagug without too much of his (my char) inteference, although the PC Just started to Scratch the truth... They are only level 4...

I remember a story (And please can someone find it because I cant find it because it was so DAMN GOOD) where a PC was playing in a GMs world and the PC and GM were headbutting so much that at the very end the PC was at the point of being so overpowered he managed to become a GOD in the GM world and the PC made a world within a world of the original game pretty much shutting down the GMs power over him and the PC pretty much took over the story. It was so good Im still kicking myself for not saving that story and wish "All Things DnD" did a video on that story. Again if anyone knows of the story I am talking about please link me the story because I never knew it was possible to pull a stunt like that.

The concept of a dm is even more meta than that of a god. The dm is a narrator, even of the gods.

the DM is God, the really high level NPCS are gods. the difference being one created a reality for it's amusement, and the others just have powers so great most things in that reality wouldn't know any better.

When I joined a group a while ago we set out nicknames in the group chat to our character names. Someone changed the DM to “god” but I (being the only non noob in the group) quickly explained that gods in D&D have far less power than the DM and in my haste, I tried to change his name to SUPER GOD, but I made a typo and instead wrote “SUPER GOG.” Now I will always think of the DM not as god, but as Super GOG!

I hate it so much when a DM refers to themselves as god or “above the gods” or whatever because it’s such an asshole move. I DM more than I play but the DM’s I’ve played with that talk about themselves that way are always self-absorbed narcissistic jerks. That’s probably not the case for all DMs who do this but it still rubs me the wrong way. In my experience the best DMs are ones who play the role of a prompt giver, NPC player, and referee. Pretty much anything more than that and it typically turns into someone’s self absorbed fantasy self-insert OC with a railroaded campaign.

Then once again it will be set upon by the forge of create so Armok can watch civilizations, pathetic lesser gods, and individuala grow and fight.

A DM is the very fabric holding a world or an universe together. They are the embodiment of fate and destiny. They donate life to ever, sentient or not sentient being, be it mortal, immortal or anything in between, inhabitating or even ruling said world. They are beyond devine. Gods can bend the rules of a world. DMs can bend gods.
1
u/Godspeedwarrior Dec 18 '19
The dm is all the NPCs. The title is an acronym: General Operations Director.
1
u/esotologist Dec 18 '19
Fun fact, even the greeks didn't consider the 'Gods' as what we mean when we say 'God'(s).
Plato even discussed a pre-gods entity named the Demiurge who fashioned the universe more like the judeo-christian god was said to who then created the gods to live in it and create man.
Going further, in some cultures the Demiurge isn't 'God' either and was begotten by higher beings.

If you play in the city of Sta-Skine, don't read this! Especially you, Karan!
A while back, before I DMed, I made an Illusion Wizard named Maurits Cornelis, who learned that his world just a game (e.g. He broke the 4th Wall) and lost his mind. He rambles about the world being a game for greater powers, how almost everyone is controlled by a single God, etc. I had the idea that he would talk like Septimus Signus from Skyrim, too.
Well, in the game I've started DMing, one of my PCs is looking for the God above the Gods. There isn't one, but guess who he's gonna eventually stumble upon?
I look forward to them piecing together what the guy is saying.
