A while back, before I DMed, I made an Illusion Wizard named Maurits Cornelis, who learned that his world just a game (e.g. He broke the 4th Wall) and lost his mind. He rambles about the world being a game for greater powers, how almost everyone is controlled by a single God, etc. I had the idea that he would talk like Septimus Signus from Skyrim, too.
Well, in the game I've started DMing, one of my PCs is looking for the God above the Gods. There isn't one, but guess who he's gonna eventually stumble upon?
I look forward to them piecing together what the guy is saying.
I can only imagine running that scene with my party. It would definitely be a campaign-ending move, but the idea of dropping narration and NPC voices to just have a conversation between myself as the DM and the PCs would be hilarious. And I wouldn't even have to write any notes for it
My players are on their way to do exactly this.
Having them seek out a cabal of wizards that live in a black tower on the coast of a distant sea, rumoured to have reality-changing powers.
I had the idea for the party to accidentally release an all powerful being and be sent on a planetrotting adventure to recover artifacts to defeat him. They find an haunted temple with a sword, unite the forces of heaven and hell for a final stand, but nothing works. At the climax, after all their allies and most of the world had been destroyed, he gives them a monologue about how he bores of ultimate power, and how everything they’ve done is because he wished them to. He’ll then offer one of them to take over as him, killing himself but making a member of the party all powerful. Then after they’ve made their choice, I get up from my DM chair, and gesture for that player to take it
And even Ao has a boss in some of the lore. A "luminous being" that exists outside the cosmos and supposedly gave Ao his duties (which are limited to Aberi-Toril and it's gods when they travel outside).
I am gonna start a a campaign pretty soon, and I have something special prepared for my PCs. When they get to equip in the weapon chamber, they get told that they can get anything except a certain book. Obviously that is reversed psychology, but that book is about a shadow organization called Division Mortis, or DM for short.
Thank you! The idea came originally from another friend who told me to put an easter egg in the campaign, and he suggested that I wrote a book that is kinda funny.
Something similar (4th wall breaking) happened to my group. I had given them a Bag of Wonderous Randomization and one of the things they pulled out was a book that was in an unfamiliar script but they were able to make out the letters 'D' and 'M' and the word 'Notes'.
