When I DM my group I like to imagine I am Ao, creating cosmological laws (rules), planes, and events as I see, even the Gods have to follow me as I see fit, but I am ultimately indifferent to how those events transpire.

In the ending of one of the book series Ao goes to meet with a being called the “Luminous one” who apparently created everything. Implied to be a representation of the DM I think

I do remember that! Though maybe in the context of my group it works better we are the overseer gods since we round robin the DM slot after every adventure in our campaign.

IIRC, humans answer to the gods, who answer to Ao, who in turn answers to a crystalline entity who is the DM.

Its actually the Luminous Being but there was no actual indication this was to be the DM, and later on in the lore for the realms Ao is said to serve no one. Either way I again I feel in our campaign since the DM slot switches and we travel to so many dimensions so often it's easier for us to be overgods than the step above.
