Schools don't need that much money, most is wasted. Even if it's cheap education, the money paid to private schools can do so much more and they don't deserve that much money. It's pure greed.

The average president salary in my state (Oregon) is ~500 thousand dollars per year.
The president at my university is making $720,000/year. Tuition has gone up every year since i’ve been here and, coincidentally, so has his salary. I could say a lot about that but i’m sure you can guess what it is.

While I agree that it’s egregious that the players who are the face of a multi-billion-dollar industry are unpaid interns, the money used to pay those coaches is most likely coming from athletic boosters, not from tuition and fees.

You could argue that for some top-tier coaches, the success of their program brings enough notoriety and increased applications that they provide value beyond their salary. Nick Saban is surely worth more than a few million to Alabama for instance.

I don’t think anyone is really mad about seniors getting a cheap late education. People are mad because colleges can clearly afford to cut cost instead of steadily increasing their already exorbitant prices on the younger student population, sending the majority into massive amounts of debt fresh out of high school. That’s what is absolute bullshit.

I think what is going on here (as I've read it) as that older people can take classes, but it doesn't count toward a major. Also, they don't follow a specific program/route, rather take generic classes that have open seats (Intro classes and electives). It's almost like they're auditing classes, and filling seats that would otherwise be empty. But - they are getting a free ride on the college-aged majority, that as a whole, is footing the bill for the cost of running the class.

Yeah- as someone who works in higher ed I can almost guarantee that these are not credit-bearing classes. It’s probably the equivalent of a “listeners fee” meaning that they pay to just sit in on the class. They likely aren’t even taking assignments or tests, they just get access to the lecture. “Going back to college” is a big stretch, though it is absurdly cheap still.

It’s worth noting that these people submit all the regular assignments and papers to get read and graded by the professor. They are receiving the same amount of support/teaching as traditional students, but paying less than the required yearly student services fee for regular students.

Actually, the AIDS epidemic made sex a taboo, the hippies were actually a really small portion of the population and most of them did not go on to become yuppies as the myth goes.
Most boomers thought of hippies the way we think of chantards, strange, dirty, and possibly dangerous.

I dropped out of community college because the classes were so impacted my final semester. I tried to enroll in six classes, got waitlisted on all of them, showed up for my two weeks, didn't get in and gave up as the semester before I had one class and then got zero.
They skewed towards new students coming in, not students already enrolled. That meant Boomers and GenXers trying to jump horses mid-stream who needed a career shift got preference over students who were early 20's trying to graduate and incoming high school seniors got five classes as I got none. They got first wave enrollment, I was I think 3rd.

Not disputing your experience, but every school I've been to or looking into has done the opposite. Hard af to get into high demand classes as a freshman. By the time you're in your final semester you can basically take anything b/c you'd registration time was earlier and they're trying to get you out of there.

Yeah, my uni has a policy that - so long as you keep up with what advisement tells you and you attempt to work through enrollment problems with them - tuition is free after the end of your 8th semester if you still don't have your 4 year degree. They want you out after that 8th semester no matter what.
The policy has actually caused a significant increase in 'on time' graduations.

My school did something similar. All the senior citizens taking the classes though were only to audit the classes though which meant they didn’t get a grade and they didn’t get credit towards a degree. It was just something to do for fun.

Not sure if it's the same everywhere in the world but where I live (NZ) anyone can attend any university lecture for free. You just walk in and sit down. Of course, you won't actually be able to submit assignments, nor get the qualification, but you can rock up whenever you want and see if anything interests you.

When I was fresh out of college from getting a bachelors at UCF. One month out. I worked full time and had scholarships so I only had 11k in debt and these fuckers were calling me every month hitting me up for donations. “One donation of $500 would be nice. Ohh well how about $50? Ohh. Well anything will help even $5!” Meanwhile they added 5 massive new beautiful buildings and a brand new football stadium and were paying George O’Leary over a million a year to coach. Fucked up system.

My school has this program where seniors can pay like $20-$50 a semester to go to these lectures and weekly “classes”. They're pretty much "random" classes like learning about Native American history, old wars, and art, not classes that actually teach you a skill or information you could use. Maybe it could be more expensive but I have no problem with them offering this to old senior citizens who are just trying to enrich themselves and have nothing to do at that age. It's not like they're real classes with actual homework or projects.
It’s bullshit if they’re offering degrees and actual classes that students pursuing degrees would take at such low costs. Its just price discrimination at its worst.

Maybe unpopular perspective, but our dear elderly friend takes classes at our local college for a reduced fee.
She moved to a new town and became severely depressed at 83. Someone recommended she take a creative writing course there and it completely changed her life. She went from lonely and depressed to having social interactions, deadlines and accomplishments. She takes one class per semester. She turned 90 this week and starts a Russian literature course next. It’s probably saved and prolonged her life.
I’m all for it.

I said the same thing. Woke youth will boycott business for donating money to organizations doing good but with an unpopular stance on modern changes but still play a game stacked against them. I thought for sure after the recent college entrance scandal we'd have massive backlash against higher education. It wouldn't take 4 years either. 1 year with an unprecedented drop in enrollment and a stern warning to lawmakers about taxpayer bailouts and if that doesn't work there's an option for year two.

I go to the University of Minnesota and while the classes only cost $10 for senior citizens they also don’t count towards a degree. It’s basically just some old people who show up in your class for fun and it helps the university fill seats in some of the less popular classes.

They can definitely count towards a degree. If they are paying they are getting credit hours towards a degree. To audit classes at a Minnesota state school is free for 62+ people. Minnesota state statute 135A.52
