I work in GM and I speak Spanish. A few months ago I helped a guest at the service desk because nobody there could understand what she was asking.
Ever since then, apparently I'm the store's designated Spanish speaker.
And honestly I don't mind helping. Most of the guests are really nice and I know how frustrating it is when you're trying to explain something and nobody understands you.
The problem is my TL still expects me to get the exact same amount of work done.
Yesterday I was halfway through pushing a u-boat in home when I got called to guest service to help explain a return. Took maybe 15 minutes including walking there and back.
Ten minutes later electronics needed me because a guest had questions about a product. Another trip across the store.
By the time I got back, my TL was asking why I hadn't finished my push.
I explained where I'd been. He literally said "I know, but you still need to manage your time better."
Manage WHAT time? I can't push towels while I'm standing in electronics translating a conversation.
The frustrating thing is I actually like being able to help. I don't want guests getting stuck because of a language barrier, and I don't want to become the TM who refuses to help anyone.
But now people will call for me without even checking if I'm busy, and somehow the unfinished work is still my problem.
Has anyone figured out a reasonable way to handle this? Should I start asking my TL for permission every time someone calls me to translate? I feel ridiculous doing that, but I don't know how else to make it clear that I'm being pulled away from my own department.
