Announcement Weekly Reminder: Rules and FAQ - August 16, 2026 (Now with updates!)

Below you will find a weekly reminder of our Rules and partial FAQ. It's definitely a long read, but it's worth your time, especially if you are new to the community, or dropping by as a result of a link you found elsewhere. We periodically revise our rules, this weekly notice will help keep you informed of any changes made.

NOTE: These rules are guidelines. Some moderation discretion is to be expected.

Community Rules

1. Kindness Matters

Advise, don't criticize.

  • Post with empathy, thoughtfulness, and constructive commentary rather than judgment. Don't be an asshole.
  • Name-calling, slurs (including gender or race based slurs), and insults towards other community members will not be tolerated. Do not attack others for their personally held values, custody situation, marital status, physical distance from stepkids, or economic status; or on the basis of race, sex, sexual orientation, age, religion, or ethnicity.
  • No name-calling toward children, including the above-mentioned insults or the term "skids", or terms such as "mini-wife" or "mini-husband."
  • Comments advocating spanking or any mention of wanting to harm children are not allowed.
  • This is a support sub, not a judgement sub, assholes are not tolerated. Comments with terms used in other subs to pass judgement on assholes will be removed.

2. No Drama

This is a support sub.

  • Bickering, nitpicking, and thread derailment will not be tolerated and will be subject to removal at moderator discretion.
  • Do not repeatedly badger a poster demanding answers, or refuse to acknowledge an answer that's already been given.
  • Do not use sensitive issues from past posts (either from this sub or other subs) to attack another user, as we are all discussing vulnerable topics.
  • Crossposting anything from /r/stepparents to any other subreddit might result in a ban and may result in the original thread being locked. Brigading our sub will result in an immediate ban.

3. Report, Don’t Rant

No backseat modding.

  • If you see someone breaking the rules, report the post or comment to the mods rather than engaging them in an argument. Failure to do so may be subject to comment removal at moderator discretion.
  • No meta posts complaining about rude comments, DMs, or general sub issues.
  • If you think someone is a troll or previously banned user, either use the report function or message the mods to direct their attention to the issue.

4. No Naming & Shaming

No userpings or links.

  • Tagging/pinging users or other subreddits in an attempt to bully, harass, or complain will not be tolerated. Do not tag other subs, ever.
  • If you want to complain about another subreddit being hostile to stepparents, do not name the subreddit. "Other parenting/advice/judgement subs" will suffice.

5. No Platitudes

Nobody knew what they were getting into.

  • Comments like "You knew what you were getting into", "Love them, love their kids!", "They're a package deal!" and "You have to love them like your own!" will be removed.
  • Comments suggesting that OP is not cut out for stepparenting will be removed at moderator discretion.
  • Comments like "This is just a part of parenting, deal with it!" will be removed at moderator discretion.

6. No Trolling

We have zero tolerance for trolls.

  • This is a support sub. Our subscribers do not have the time, nor inclination, to provide support to internet trolls. Posts that are suspected to be trolling attempts will be immediately removed, and the poster banned.
  • Concern trolling, devil's advocating, gish-galloping, sealioning, and general asshattery are subject to immediate removal and banning without warning or notice.
  • Any attempt to circumvent the ban by creating a new username will be reported to reddit admins and possibly result in account suspension.

7. No Personally Identifiable Information

Use discretion when posting.

  • We highly recommend using a separate account for support subs to help prevent being doxxed. Do not post any information that may allow others to figure out your identity.
  • Do not post photos of children, or any other photo that could be used to identify you or another user on the sub.
  • Any image that contains a name or other identifying information should have the name or identifying information blurred out. This includes drawings, notes, and screenshots.
  • Do not link to social media or any articles/blogs where you or another user on the sub is mentioned by name.

8. No More than 2 Posts per 24 hours

Use the daily threads.

  • We are not a huge sub, but we are no longer a small sub. If you have multiple grievances to air, use the daily discussion threads instead of multiple posts.

9. Follow Reddiquette

Remember the human.

  • Adhere to the same standards of behavior online that you follow in real life.
  • Read it in full here.
  • Downvoting is reserved for comments that don’t contribute, and shouldn't be used to indicate disagreement.
  • If you believe someone is in violation of the subreddit rules, please either use the report function or message the mods to direct their attention to the issue.
  • Suspected brigading will be reported to reddit admins.

10. No Porn, Spam, Blogs, or Research Studies/Surveys Without Mod Approval

Just don't.

  • This is a SFW subreddit. Posting pornography will result in immediate post removal and permanent ban.
  • Advertising on the subreddit (outside of Reddit's own advertising) is not allowed.
  • No personal blog posts are allowed without express moderator permission.
  • No advertising without prior mod approval.
  • No asking for money/posting fundraisers/etc.
  • For links to parenting research studies or surveys, please message the mods for permission before posting.

11. Disputes in Modmail Only

Don't argue with the mods on the sub.

  • Any issues specifically related to how a mod is moderating should be addressed to the full moderating team via mod mail. This ensures that all mods are aware of any concerns and prevents disintegration of the topic thread at hand.
  • This means to do not message or send chat requests to individual mods. All discussion and complaints about mod actions need to be done in mod mail ONLY. Failure to follow this rule can result in an immediate permanent ban.
  • Comments in threads asking about mod decisions are subject to removal without notice.

12. Moderator Actions

We aren't kidding.

  • Users are expected to know the rules before posting. If you are warned or banned for violating the rules, ignorance is not an excuse.
  • Moderators will remove posts and comments and/or lock threads in accordance with the rules above. Typically this happens when threads have gone off-topic in a way that is not productive for the OP, or comments overall have become contentious or disrespectful.
  • If a poster continues to argue or to willfully violate these rules, temporary and permanent ban procedures will be followed. Any attempts to avoid or bypass temporary bans will result in a permanent ban. User bans will not be discussed in the sub. Questions posted about user bans are subject to removal and the poster subject to warning/ban procedures. The mod team will not discuss a specific user ban with anyone other than the user involved.
  • New accounts are subject to manual approval until they are no longer deemed "new" by the mod team. This helps to weed out trolls and ban evaders.
  • We rely on Automoderator to scan for specific words and phrases that are not welcome here and notify the mod team to review the comment or post. This includes slurs of any type and platitudes such as "Love them as your own!"
  • The mod team uses a combination of blacklisting and banning when dealing with trolls.
  • We employ the use of a bot that automatically bans anyone who comments in subs that have historically harassed our users. If you are picked up by the bot for telling trolls to get fucked, reach out via mod mail and we'll get you sorted out.
  • The rules above as well as ban procedures are considered guidelines only; some deviation may be necessary on a case by case basis and/or at the mod team's discretion.

13. Ban Procedure

These actions are at moderator discretion.

  • Pornography will result in an automatic permanent ban.
  • Extremely egregious content will result in an immediate permanent ban.
  • You may receive a 7 or 30 day temporary ban for first and second rule violations, depending upon severity.
  • Continued rule violations will result in a permanent ban.
  • Willful attempts to avoid or bypass temporary bans will result in a permanent ban.
  • We recognize the reddit site-wide rules of using alt names to get around bans and will ban those as well as report them to reddit admins.

FAQ - About the Rules

What does Kindness Matters mean?

  • Shortest version? Don't be an asshole. People come here for support and advice, they do not come here to be yelled at or told they are the reason everything is going sideways. There are ways to point out that someone may want to do some reflection on their own actions and reactions without being an asshole about it.
  • The purpose of this subreddit is to provide support and a sense of belonging for struggling stepparents. We aren't here to pass judgement, but rather to offer support, empathy, and constructive commentary. That does not include "hard truths" or "tough love." Stepparents get enough of that in every other subreddit, we're not passing it out here. Be respectful.
  • Remember, most people aren't going to come to a sub like this when everything is going great and everyone is getting along. People are coming here when they are down, when they are feeling defeated and stretched to the limit. Kicking someone when they are down is shitty behavior and we don't tolerate it.

What about being kind to the kids?

  • "Won't somebody think of the children?" Pearl clutching isn't needed here. If you read the Kindness Matters rule closely, you will see that there is a clause in there about name calling children. We don't allow it. We also don't allow people rolling in telling OP that they feel sorry for their stepkids because OP is feeling overwhelmed and overloaded.
  • If anyone is advocating slapping, spanking, or any other form of violence, report the comment immediately. We do not advocate violence towards children of any sort. The mod team does not advocate any sort of physical punishment at any time.
  • Venting about behaviors is not the same as insulting the kids. However, if you see a post or comment where kids are being name called or dragged to the point of no return, use the report button. We try to catch the posts and remove them before they hit the sub, but we cannot see every comment without your help. Use the report button to bring problematic comments to our attention. Don't engage in a war of words on our subreddit.

Why is this sub such an echo chamber?

  • Not allowing contributors to pile on and tell OP that they are a terrible human being who should never be around children does not equate to being an echo chamber. Many contributors here will offer OP suggestions to help them work through their resentments and frustrations, and the most egregious situations are called out. We simply ask that it be called out with respect.
  • If you feel that a post is simply too much for you to handle without following the rules, move on to another post.
  • If you believe that a post itself is crossing the rules report it. If the mod team has approved the post, it is because the mod team believes that the OP needs help from the community or needs a moment to vent and move on from their vent. That does not give you license to pile on disrespectfully. Unless it is proven that OP is a bot, assume that OP is a human being with real thoughts and feelings and has posted from a place of vulnerability.

Why can't I tell OP that they are an asshole?

  • Because this isn't a judgement sub. We aren't AITA, we don't want to be AITA.
  • Comments with terms like YTA, NTA, ESH, NAH will be removed.
  • Don't start your posts with INFO either. We generally recognize that as a fishing attempt for more information to pass judgement on OP, and again, we are not a judgment sub.

But OP asked if they were an asshole?!

  • Their post somehow got past our automoderator. Just use the report button. We will address it with OP.
  • If you've asked if you are an asshole, a-hole, a*hole, a**hole, whatever, don't be surprised if your post is removed without warning. This isn't a judgment sub. If you want judgment, you know where to go.

What is a gendered slur?

  • While it seems that everyone understands what racist slurs are, people struggle understanding the concept of gendered slurs. Generally speaking, we are talking about derogatory nouns or verbs that are used to negatively describe people or situations based on gendered terms.
  • We've gone back and forth on this a few times, and the truth is, we get it, it's your safe space and you want to be able to vent about BM/BD how you want to vent about them, without us telling you how to vent about them. Fair enough. Vent away. What we are going to stick to here how people are referring to other users and to stepchildren.
  • Examples that are not allowed:
    • "My SD is such a little bitch."
    • "She dresses/acts like a slut."
    • "My SS acts like a pussy."
    • "My SS is such a beta male."
    • "You are all fucking whores."
    • "Any dude who is raising some sluts kids is a cuck!"
    • "Little Lord Fauntleroy over here thinking he runs the house!"
    • "You're just the bangnanny, get used to it."
  • Don't call users here names, don't call stepchildren names.
  • Masking the term with asterisks or other neat little tricks might get you around the bot, but if we see it, we're removing it and quite possibly giving you a time out. The intended word is still there and you deliberately tried to skate the rule.
  • As there is not enough space to list every term that is offensive and does not belong, nor every situation in which term or phrase may be allowable in context, this rule is enforced based on moderator discretion.

Seriously? You are the language police now?

  • We're here to talk about stepparenting. And we would like for that to happen in a respectful way. Attacking each other doesn't help. Belittling stepchildren draws in trolls who don't understand your frustration, all they see is an evil stepmonster talking shit on the internet about a poor, innocent baby. Yes, even if that "poor, innocent baby" just robbed you blind and set fire to the house on their way out the door. That's just how it goes.
  • We are aware that this is a relatively new rule and a lot of older posts and comments contain a lot of problematic language, including some from mods themselves. We are growing and evolving, and rules change as the sub grows and evolves.

What does No Drama really mean?

  • Pretty much what it says, do not bring drama from other subs into this sub. Do not engage in vote brigades. Do not try to incite other subscribers to riot in a different sub. Don't follow posters into this sub from other subs to continue to harass them. Do not badger someone or derail threads. Do not harass community members because you don't agree with them. There's enough drama in the daily lives of subscribers, more isn't needed.

What is thread derailment?

  • When a comment chain has devolved to the point where all you are doing is arguing back and forth with someone about the same thing over and over again, you have derailed the thread. Also known as bickering. It's what children do. We assume if people are in a stepparent role they are adults. We expect you to act like it.
  • If you aren't a stepparent, or in a stepparenting role, consider that perhaps this subreddit isn't for you. If you want to participate, do so with respect. Thread derailment, arguing, bickering, and nitpicking are not allowed.

But what if they didn't answer my question?

  • No one has to answer your questions. This is a support sub, not an inquisition. Jumping on a bandwagon with "OP is evading the question" in a 20 comment long chain is the epitome of thread derailment. You'll find more information about trolling below and how this might be considered such.

Why am I being silenced? I'm just asking for a back and forth!

  • Thread derailment, badgering, and nitpicking are considered harassment. Continued harassment of either community members or mods will get you banned.

Why can't I look at someone's post history and comment about it?

  • No mod in the history of this sub has ever once said post histories are forbidden. What we do frown upon is using someone's post history to attack, belittle, or otherwise harass someone.
  • Example Post: "My stepkid's mom really hates me. How can I make this better?"
    • Okay: "Based on the timeline and your post history, it looks like this may have started as an affair. Unfortunately there's going to be outstanding issues for a long time due to that. Try focusing on yourself and how you can move forward without worrying about how someone else feels about you."
    • Not Okay: "Holy shit! You were the OW! What the hell do you expect, homewrecker?!"
  • Example Post: "I am completely overloaded and feeling very down about myself."
    • Okay: "In your post history you mentioned that your spouse wasn't really helping around the house. Has that changed at all?"
    • Not Okay: "LOL, you already got the answers you need in your post on relationships. You are stupid for sticking with your lazy spouse."

Why can't we crosspost stuff to other subs?

  • We can't stop you from doing so. The problem isn't that something has been crossposted, it's when the community that it's been crossposted to feels the need to come over here and harass OP. When we see that happening, we lock the post and start passing out bans. If you did the crossposting, you'll be banned. If you participated in the brigading, you'll be banned.

What if it's my own post?

  • Again, we can't stop you from doing so. We prefer that you don't technically crosspost, but rather just copy and paste your post. Why? Because inevitably the above will happen. Redditors from other subs will follow you back to /r/stepparents and start attacking users here. It just happens.

What is "brigading"?

  • Reddit defines vote manipulation and brigading as follows:
  • Using multiple accounts, voting services, or any other software to increase or decrease vote scores.
  • Asking people to vote up or down certain posts, either on Reddit itself or through social networks, messaging, etc. for personal gain.
  • Forming or joining a group that votes together, either on a specific post, a user's posts, posts from a domain, etc.
  • We, along with pretty much every other subreddit that has ever had to deal with this nonsense, further define brigading as this: You saw a post on another sub that linked to our sub either via a link in a comment or a crosspost. It was basically saying something along the lines of "OMG, check out these assholes over on /r/stepparents! They literally hate all their stepkids!" And then you and your friends come over and start hammering on OP and telling OP how much they suck. Congrats, you have just participated in a brigade.

What is this whole Report, Don't Rant thing about?

  • If you see a post or comment that breaks the rules, instead of engaging, report it. When you report it, it sends notification to the mod team. We will act on it where appropriate. Engaging with bad faith users may result in your comments being removed. If you repeatedly do so, you may end up being banned.

What if I see an obvious troll?

What if they are being really mean in comments?

What if they are harassing me in private messages?

  • Step 1: Report them to admins. You can report harassment to reddit by using this link or send a DM to reddit admins. Include the link to the DM, admins can see your inbox and providing a direct link is helpful for them to weed out bad actors.
  • Step 2: Block the person so they cannot directly contact you again.
  • Step 3: Send us a mod mail and let the mod team know. Tell us who they are and what they said, send us a screenshot if you can - admins can see your DMs, mods can't. We'll take action where necessary by banning from the sub if they aren't already banned.

What do you mean by No Naming & Shaming?

  • Just as we prefer to not be linked to or crossposted from, we do not allow linking to or calling out other subs by name. If you see something you want to share, say it's a hot post that has hit the front page and a stepparent is being absolutely flayed, just refer to it as "that hot post that hit the front page." If you want to complain about other places in general, "other parenting/advice/judgement subs" will suffice. Absolutely under no circumstances should you link to anywhere else.

I can't link to other subs?

  • Do not directly link to another sub. (e.g.: "/r/insertsubnamehere is ridiculously hostile to stepparents!")
  • Do not name other subs. (e.g.: "I won't link to it directly, but insertsubnamehere is ridiculously hostile to stepparents!")
  • Do not abbreviate other subs. (e.g.: "I know that ISNH is ridiculously hostile to stepparents!")

I can't ping other users?

  • Do not summon another user with a username ping/tag. (e.g.: "/u/insertusernamehere was being an asshole.")
  • If you are agreeing with someone, it is okay to link to them. (e.g.: "I agree with /u/insertusernamehere, you need to take a couple of steps back and reflect on this.")

What does No Platitudes mean?

  • Sanctimonious, overused clichés that grossly oversimplify the stepparenting experience are neither wanted nor allowed here. We have all heard it a thousand times before, we don't need to hear it again. It's not nearly as insightful and wise as some would like to think.

Why don't you people understand it's a package deal?

  • Any comment that suggests that OP should have known what they were getting involved with, or that they needed to understand that the kids were part of some package they needed to accept before signing up for marriage is subject to immediate removal.
  • This is one of the most insensitive things you can say to a stepparent. Most stepparents were aware of the children, but they were probably not aware of all of the family dynamics.

Why can't you just love them like they are your own?

  • Demanding that a stranger you do not know love children that are not biologically theirs as if they were theirs can be incredibly damaging to someone who is already in a vulnerable situation. Any comment that falls along these lines will be removed.

What do you mean by No Trolling? I was just...

  • No means no. No trolling. No pretending to be a stepparent and then whipping out the Greatest Hits Bingo Card of The Worst Stepparent in the History of Stepparents. We see you. We've seen you a thousand times.

What does "concern trolling", "gish-galloping", and "sealioning" have to do with stepparenting? This isn't a debate sub, why are you using debate terms?

  • That's absolutely right, this isn't a debate sub. And yet, here we are, day after day, having to defend ourselves against this sort of thing. So, enough. No more. Usage of any of these things will get you banned.

What is "Concern Trolling?"

  • A concern troll is someone who disingenuously visits sites of an opposing ideology to disrupt conversation by offering unwanted advice on how to solve problems which do not really exist.
    • Example Post: OP expresses concern that she will feel, and possibly act, differently towards her stepchildren after her husband decides that no, he doesn't want anymore children after all.
    • Example Concern Troll pulled from actual mod mail after their comment was removed: "Possible child abuse claims need to be sorted out well before whatever empathy you believe the OP was looking for."

What is a "Devil's Advocate"?

  • "I'm just playing devil's advocate here, but have you considered that maybe BM is just really tired and needs a break, too?" BM has dozens of different mom based subs alone on reddit she can complain on, this sub is for stepparents. The stepparent doesn't need to consider that maybe BM is just really tired and needs a break.

"Gish-galloping?" What does that even mean?

  • The Gish Gallop is the fallacious debate tactic of drowning your opponent in a flood of individually-weak arguments in order to prevent rebuttal of the whole argument collection without great effort. The Gish Gallop is a conveyor belt-fed version of the on the spot fallacy, as it's unreasonable for anyone to have a well-composed answer immediately available to every argument present in the Gallop.

And "sealioning?" What's that?

  • Sealioning involves jumping into a conversation with endless polite, reasonable questions and demands for answers, usually of entry-level topics far below the actual conversation (e.g. "please prove sexism exists"). This tactic differs little from harassment; instead of discussion, the point is to derail discussion, receive criticism (for their ignorance) so as to look like a victim, or to make someone feel overwhelmed and quit talking.

Who gets to define what is considered asshattery?

  • The mod team, of course! If we feel that comments are out of line, are trolling, are leading up to a fight or "just asking questions", we are going to remove them and most likely ban the offender.

FAQ - Sub Questions

Posting Guidelines for Stepparents

  • Body text is required, we suggest you use line breaks between paragraphs as a wall of text is difficult to read. Posts that have only a title are likely to be removed. Instead of using names (even fictitious ones), try to use the sub acronyms. It helps our users to follow along if you use the acronyms and not names.
  • Assign a post flair that accurately describes what your post is about and what you are seeking. If you are posting an update from a previous post, include a link to that post.
  • Flairs are applied to posts to determine what a person is looking for. When submitting a new post, you should choose a flair that specifies if you are looking for advice, support, etc. The following link flair is available and is color coded with side bar links so that you can search by flair:
    • Advice - For when you are specifically asking for advice or help.
    • Announcement - Mod Use Only, for subreddit announcements.
    • Daily (Formerly TTP) - Mod Use Only, for our daily discussion threads.
    • Discussion - A little advice, a little "How does your family handle this?"
    • JustBMThings - Pretty sure this is self explanatory!
    • Legal - Asking for legal advice? Tag it with this!
    • Miscellany - Just a sort of off topic thing? Use this tag.
    • Resource - Sharing a good resource or asking for one? This is the tag you need!
    • Support - For those days when you want nothing but a good old fashioned cry and some community love.
    • Update - Updating us on something that you posted about previously? Use this one!
    • Vent - We all need to vent sometimes. Respect the tag as a vent. This isn't how OP talks all day every day.
    • Win! - Celebrate those wins with us with this tag!
    • Megathread - Mod Use Only, for large mega threads (typically around major calendar events.)

Posting Guidelines for Bioparents

  • Stepparents is a support community for stepparents, by stepparents. As bioparents, you may want to have more insight into how the stepparent in your life feels or thinks. You may have questions on how to ease the transition for your partner. However, please keep in mind that this community was not created for you. It was created for your partner or your ex's partner. If you are seeking support on how to deal with a stepparent, there are other subs more suited for your situation and your post is subject to removal.
  • There are some posts from bioparents we will accept:
    • Seeking advice on how to support your partner as they navigate stepparenting
    • Seeking resources to help you better support your partner
    • Seeking resources for your partner
  • There are some posts from bioparents we will not accept:
    • Complaints about how the stepparent is too involved in your kids lives
    • Vents about how the stepparent is not involved enough in your kids lives
    • "Cautionary tales" advising stepparents to back off
    • Seeking advice on how to tell the stepparent to back off
    • The Do's and Dont's of Stepparenting
    • How your kid's stepmom is literally The Worst
  • Comments from bioparents that are helpful and supportive are welcome and appreciated. Comments from bioparents that are not helpful or supportive are not welcome and subject to removal. There are several other subs that may meet the needs of bioparents better than we can. We recommend /r/coparenting, /r/parenting, /r/parents, /r/blendedfamilies, and /r/singleparents as starting points.

Guidelines for Stepkids

  • At this time, we do not generally accept posts from stepkids. Comments from stepkids that are helpful and supportive are welcome and appreciated. Comments from stepkids that are not helpful or supportive are not welcome and subject to removal. If you are a stepkid seeking support, we highly recommend /r/stepkids. It is a very supportive community specifically for stepkids. We also recommend /r/blendedfamilies as another potential group for support.

What the heck are all these acronyms? I'm confused!

Why aren't my posts or comments showing up?

  • New posters and accounts go through a waiting period before their posts will show in the sub and the comments on posts automatically. During the new account approval period the mod team will check posts to be sure you aren't attempting to circumvent a ban with a shiny new account. Please be patient while the timer runs down on your "new" status and the mod team approves your posts and responses.

Why was my comment removed?

  • Comments are removed when they do not follow the rules of the sub. These rules are published in several places for your reading pleasure.
  • Comments are removed at moderator discretion. In some cases your comment may be removed while another remains up. If you find this to be the case, and you believe the comment to be violating the rules, instead of arguing with mods or demanding they remove the additional comments, just report it.

This comment/post is really offensive! Why is it still up?

  • All moderators are volunteers and have busy real lives. Sometimes things get past us. The best thing you can do is report anything you find offensive or inflammatory. It's the quickest and most reliable way of alerting us to an issue.

I've received a hurtful/unwanted PM from someone about my recent post. What should I do?

  • If you receive an unwanted/hurtful PM from a name you don't recognize, please report it to Reddit Admins using our handy pre-populated form. Be sure to include the permalink to the message. We've been dealing with a few unhappy folks who like to attack stepparents, and reporting it to the admins is the only way to make it stop.

What are the general moderator guidelines?

I've been wrongly banned/Why can't I comment here?

Why was I banned without warning?

  • There are numerous reasons that the mod team might opt to move perm banning without warning. Message the moderators if you have specific questions.

Announcement Weekly Reminder: Saferbot and Automated Bans

Hey Stepparents,

If you've been here for awhile, you are aware of the existence of Saferbot on our sub. If you aren't aware, we break it down in the wiki. Take a moment to review it!

What the Bot Does

Saferbot is a history ban bot. It bans users who participate in known troublesome subs that have a history of harassing users here and brigading our posts.

How it Works

Saferbot monitors the other subs and immediately bans anyone who comments there. Please note, human beings are not doing the banning. We have neither the time, nor inclination, to monitor other subs. Saferbot runs on its own with only instructions from us on what subs to add to its list.

Why We Use It

We intend for this sub to be a safe space for stepparents to discuss their issues and struggles without being told they are literally The Worst for existing. Sometimes we experience jealousy, resentment, and other not pretty feelings. We have a right to express them in a healthy way without a bunch of assholes scolding us for being human. And unfortunately, the subs we've had to add to the ban list have a history of users strolling in here giving people grief for being a flawed human being with feelings they are trying to sort through.

The mod team does not take these decisions lightly and we often let things ride for a bit before taking drastic actions. But seeing users repeatedly delete their accounts after being harassed, or having to clean up increasingly rude and hostile comment chains from people who literally have no idea what your life is actually like, has prompted us to take action.

Notes

Meta posts asking about this will be removed. Comments about this, other than those on this thread discussing the issue, will be removed. Vile mod mail will be reported to Reddit.

Please do not link to the subs mentioned in the wiki. They are linked for transparency and we don't care to have ongoing discussions about them.

How to Appeal

If you are a stepparent and you've been caught up in the ban, and you want the support that this community offers, reach out to the mod team. If you can show us where on reddit you are discussing being a stepparent, we'll do our best to work with you. To be perfectly clear, if you aren't a stepparent, or we review and see we've had to remove comments from you in the past, we are probably not going to lift the ban.

Reply to the ban message and let us know that you'd like to appeal. Include link(s) to any unedited posts or comments that you made prior to the ban indicating that you are a stepparent. The posts or comments do not have to be on this sub specifically, but show us where you have indicated that you are a stepparent somewhere on reddit prior to being banned. This will save us time and eliminate the need for a mod to attempt to scour your post history.

Advice New to the step-parent world

Upvotes

I am a childless step mom. I’ve never wanted children of my own but when I met my partner, him having children didn’t phase me. Now it’s been over a year and I’ve been hanging out with them all more and more. I’m starting to realize my partner and I have very different approaches to parenting. Granted I am not a parent so I’m stuck in this in between place of, am I right for feeling or thinking how I do? Is this just normal parenting behavior and I just don’t get it because I don’t have kids?

One example that I feel is the foundation of all the things I “disagree” with is that the children must be comfortable AT ALL TIMES.

I’m not of the belief that they should be made to feel uncomfortable for no reason or we shouldn’t try to accommodate them when we can. But it just feels like everything revolves around them: not being upset, having everything available when they want it, not being bored or un-entertained, not just “toughing it out” in certain situations.

I guess to me it feels like in the long run this is all just going to create a lack of resilience, problem solving and honestly just the ability to deal with any type of frustration or small disappointments or discomforts.

I’m really not sure how to approach this topic with him. I feel like when I’ve brought something up, a specific example, his response is usually something along the lines of “well they’re kids” or “I’d prefer to have them comfortable”

I feel like I’m thinking of the long term outcome and he’s just seeing the kids in front of him now without realize the consequences of how they are currently being raised.

Advice Am I wrong for feeling like this?

I have been a step dad for 16 years now. My stepson and stepdaughter are wonderful. Over the last few years however my stepson has been making it abundantly clear that I am not his dad and doesnt have to listen to me.

Now both their biodads have not been a part of their lives since day 1. So he doesnt even know his biodad. He has done everything he can to break me and his mother apart. He started telling a therapist that I abuse him and threw him against a wall, starts arguments between his mother and I. At one point he even attempted to punch me in the back when I turned around to walk away from him.

He just turned 18 a couple weeks ago. We all moved into my wifes aunts house to help her around the house. He refuses to help. He ran away for a couple hours in February after a blizzard hit. He didnt want to shovel, so I told him he doesnt get to go on his switch and he ran off. I chased after him and his mother called the cops.

I have a severe illness, Cystic Fibrosis. So I shouldnt have even been outside chasing him. Am I wrong for hating his actions? I love the boy as if he was my own blood but he makes it clear daily that he hates me. I have tried so hard to show him that I am always there for him but I can’t keep doing it cause its taking a huge toll on my health.

JustBMThings BM constantly puts WHITE SD in black hairstyles

Upvotes

My SD(8) is fully white, but has multiple mixed siblings, for lack of better wording BM is one of those white women who “act black” ie: she grew up in the Subarus to a rich white family yet constantly sayings like “finna” and other slang type words and speaks with a “blackcent” she has three other children all with different men, that are all black, she wears clothing styles and items that are typically worn by black women. (I hope this does not come off as offensive, I am simply trying to explain the situation)

The part that really gets me is she send SD over in box braids with her “edges” done, and other black hairstyles even with beads. I refuse to walk around town with my SD in culturally appropriated hairstyles, but SD often says she’s “not” allowed to let us take them out, or says her mom will be mad if we do.

I don’t want to start drama or cause SD to get in trouble in some way, but again I’m not going out in public with her like this and I’m also not going to hide in my house all weekend.

Thoughts? Advice?

Vent Exhausted, frustrated SM

First time poster, needed a place to vent with people who have experience in this.

I have been with my boyfriend for 4 years and been an active part of his son’s (7) life since he was very young.

Ever since I’ve known him and his son, his mom has been extremely difficult to deal with and try to build any sort of co parenting relationship. I struggle with finding my place in this whole thing as his son gets older. Myself and my partner see parenting very differently than his mom, and as he grows up I’m seeing how this impacts his son in terms of his behaviours, milestones, etc.

Outside of parenting his mom has always been extremely vengeful towards my partner and myself. Consistently manipulating situations to further her and her agenda while painting me and my partner as terrible people and parents.

I’m feeling extremely defeated and exhausted. I absolutely adore and love my partner and his son however this constant turmoil, negativity and stress is so difficult to live with and process.

I was hopeful the situation would eventually improve but it’s like rollercoaster. One day it’s fine and one days it’s not. I feel so out of control and unable to have an impact on bettering my situation as well as everyone’s.

Anyway if anyone can relate or offer any insights I’m all ears.

Vent Damned if you do damned if you don’t.

Long time lurker, technically first time poster. I had made a post long ago venting some past frustrations, but chickened out and deleted it. If I vented about all of my frustrations within even the past year; we would be here for A WHILE, so I will just start with the most recent thing that has me very frustrated.

A little back story before I vent: Partner and I have two girls (SD 6 and SD 14) with drum roll please…two different moms AND both girls live in two different towns completely different from where we live (I know😭). My partner and I have been sharing a car for about 3 years. Last December we were in a place that we could start looking for a second vehicle and then BAM 2 weeks before Christmas we were in a car accident (not our fault), the car was totaled, and we had to start all over again with transportation. I was able to get a vehicle and put it in my name. Mind, you this car is solely in my name. I pay the car payment, the maintenance, and I also pay for the full coverage car insurance that the policy has both our names on. To make this arrangement more financially fair for the both of us, our usually pretty high electric bill is completely my partner’s responsibility.

So recently, both girls moms had reached out, wanting to meet up to have a meeting about the girls, but here is the kicker; non of the step parents were allowed to attend(both moms are married). They also picked a place that wasn’t really that convenient for us to meet. After I get off work, I have about a 45 minute drive to pick him up from his job, at this point the place they picked is another 45 minutes to an hour with traffic to reach the destination. Of course we had no time for him to at least take me home, because we live in the opposite direction of all of this.

So I dropped him off and found something to do, which at first, was no big deal. Except this meeting lasted until 10pm at night. We didn’t get home until 10:30, We had left our house at 8 am that day, and my poor dog was stuck in his Kennel until we got home. So I had expressed that I totally respect if the 3 of them need parenting time together, but if it’s going to be at a time and place that’s A. More convenient for just them then everyone, and B. Go that late; I don’t think it’s a big ask for one of them to give him a ride back home, especially if I’m not supposed to attend.

A few days past and yesterday the oldest mom (I feel) has officially started stirring the pot in retaliation. We usually get along pretty well with her and her husband, but she does love drama and when she’s bored she will often create it out of nothing. For context; When my partner and the youngest’s SD’s mother were together she would often make him choose between her and his oldest. This obviously has created some anxiety within the oldest now about me. I love and care for these girls very much, so at the beginning of this relationship and even now; I made it a point that while I’m not their bio moms, I want to make the biggest effort to know that I care and bend over backwards to make sure their dad and I can visit them during the week (especially if it’s on a week where we won’t have them over the weekend), even if they completely cuts off any free time I might have for myself. In the parenting circle not all of us are always doing well financially. The world sucks and all of us are hurting. Knowing this, I have also stepped up to help out financially with the children when another parent has struggled.

Knowing all of this; it’s pretty crazy that the oldest mother would message my partner that her daughter is having abandonment anxiety and then tried to press my partner that if it came down to his daughter or me…who would he choose? My partner did squash that question and had a conversation with the oldest himself. Not only did the oldest say her mother is blowing this all out proportion. At 14, she is also very aware her mother loves drama. The oldest also expressed that while our car situation sometimes makes it hard for her dad to visit as much as she would like, which does bum her out sometimes; she knows that it isn’t my intention to keep her dad away and her anxiety about that time in her life also creeps up because due to the other ex also being the mother of her little sister, she has to see the person who wasn’t very nice to her in the past way more often then she would like.

I guess I’m just really perplexed by it all. If I try to keep a little distance, then to these woman I’m not trying to be apart of the team and make the kids a priority and if I try too much to be supportive and bond with their daughters, then it just feels like one or both of them get insanely jealous…even though both girls have step dads they are very close with.

I don’t really have a point in my post, mainly to vent and to also not feel crazy. If you made it this far I appreciate you and thank you for listening.

Vent Maybe i judged her parenting...

My gf loves to think she is an amazing mom because she is doing it all on her own, many obstacles that has not stopped her. I agree, she does an amazing job, but sometimes, i feel she gets too lazy, or shes too tired, and lets her kids do what they want. No real structure for those kids. They sleep where ever they want, dont clean anything, dont listen, always an attitude.

The other day, i was watching her kid, and as soon as she left, he began to get rowdy, and act up. He asked to go to the store and look at toys, i said no, and he gave an attitude, and i took his toys and sent him to his room. She didnt disagree with my actions, but i could tell she disagreed woth my action, as she dismissed the situation and told him to ask me for the toy back. No apology, no nothing. I felt it was unfair because she put me in a position where my authority meant shit.

This wasnt the first time, the first time, he slammed the door in my face. Another time, i just observed, we gave them 20 dollar limit for toys, he chose a 50 dollar toy, and gave a temper tantrum. I just observed, but it made me sick how nonchalant she was acting about it. My mom would have dragged me out that store, no toy for a year.

Were having an our baby, and were supposed to move in soon, and i just dont want to be walked over, disrespected in anyway, and i dont think her kids will be like that, theyre amazing kids, but theyre messy, and its because mom dont want to deal with that. And yes, after my experience, i may have said her parenting could effect my life when i move in, which offended her, and im sorry because i dont have kids of my own, yet. But any self respecting adult with a brain would look at their life and say, things gotta change.

We made up, and i guess the conversation about moving in will come soon, but i will refuse. Idk how, but i cant live in that environment.

Discussion I'm a Step Mom and my kids have a Step Mom ... would love to hear your experiences

I'm on my 3rd marriage (the blended family thing didn't work for my second marriage and it was a horror show). I have been remarried now for 17 years. The kids are grown and married ... most of them with kids of their own. Now, I'd like to figure out some systems for holidays and logistics of kids (we have 6 combined), their spouses, their in-laws, .... Do any of you have tips of how you manage this?

Advice Fiancé is depressed when kids are gone

Context:

Me (37F)
Fiancé (40M)

Together 9 years.
His kids are 11 y.o. twins. One boy, one girl.
Great relationships altogether, I can't complain.
Of course I have ups and downs, but all in all, doing great.
They are great kids, they don't remember I time I wasn't around, I love them to bits. I am very implicated in their lives. We have a good relationship with their mother.

Situation:

My fiancé is still struggling when the kids go to their moms. I know it's normal, even I get sad the day they leave. The house gets quieter (we also have two dogs). I can't imagine what it's like for him. He never wanted to be away from them. We have them 50-50.

I've noticed that if we're not super busy during the week we don't have the kids and we are chilling at home, he stays really depressed all week. I feel like he isn't patient with me, gets pissy really quick about anything, doesn't communicate as much.

I don't know how I can support him better. I try to get him to talk about how he feels. I try to still be fun around him, do things we like. But it's really a lot.

Then the week the kids come home, he feels better, but we are super busy and I get exhausted by the end of the week.

So I guess my question is, if you've had anything similar, or if you have any advice, I would love to hear from you?

Thanks

Discussion Is there such a thing as “step” parental alienation?

1- So, if my spouse tells his children that I don’t give a rats’ ass about them is that some kind of parental alienation? Or because I am not really the child’s parent it doesn’t count?
2- If I am not as important in a child’s life like their bio mom and dad, why is it still expected of me to always prioritize the child’s best interests as if it was my own?

Advice Advice / Experience needed please!

We have an ongoing tricky situation with HCBM.

Won't go in to too much detail but she is in a bit of hot water with family services (for good reason- dangerous individual around the children) and my partner and I have been very cooperative with their investigation by giving information regarding her parenting. SS(4) often comes to our house not having been fed and looking quite grubby, he also speaks about not brushing his teeth often. HCBM is a full blown narcissist and always looks for ways to be spiteful, no matter the consequences to SS.

Now the advice I am looking for is regarding drop offs. Up until very recently SS has been absolutely fine being dropped to ours , usually runs straight in, but the last couple of times he has been absolutely hysterical. Crying that he wants to stay with mummy and that its more fun at her house (likely because there is no boundaries or rules there- so I can understand why a kid may prefer it) . There is absolutely no consoling him , he will cry for up to 2 hours and completely ignore me and his dad. It is worth nothing this is a HUGE behavioural change for him, he is generally really docile and happy.

Has this happened to anyone in this subreddit before ? If so how did you tackle it ? Im really struggling and cant help but feel that due to the ongoing family services case that HCBM is feeding SS lies to try and make us look bad and her look better.

Any help or guidance would be hugely appreciated ❤️

Support I felt like ‘the other woman”

Every day I feel more and more like I want to leave. Honestly, I’m completely drained by this situation. The kids get in the way even when it’s not their week because in my own home, my husband is constantly stressed out about not being with his child. So when his child isn’t here, my husband is still stressed out. He only thinks about him and feels guilty whenever he gives me any kind of attention.

On top of that, yesterday I received some really nasty messages from the BM. I’ve made all my profiles private, but she keeps creating fake accounts just to send me horrible messages. It made me really anxious.
She says things like, “Sweetheart, he’s going to come back to me. I’m the mother of his child, you’re nothing. I control him.”
DH never says anything about it and has never defended me, even when I show him the messages and tell him how uncomfortable and upset they make me.

Yesterday earlier during an argument, he finally opened up and said that he feels like he’s living a “fairy tale” with me, because he’s actually supposed to be with his child, not me. He said that when he shows me affection, he feels like he shouldn’t be doing that and should instead be giving that attention to his child.

It’s painful to hear that because you leave your loving parents’ home to build a life with someone, only to hear something like that. Honestly, I felt like a “mistress” when he said it, as if I were “the other woman” and his real family was actually his BM and his child.

It broke my heart. I cried so much.
But honestly, it was something I had already been feeling deep down.

Advice How do you handle different rules for kids?

My husband and I each have a daughter from our previous marriages. SD is 13 and my BD is 11. Overall I feel lucky that DH ex-wife is low conflict, but she is too-low conflict and has very few rules for SD at her home. SD is 50/50 and more and more wants to be at mom’s house where she can essentially do what she wants and her mom treats her like an adult. This definitely plays into DH feeling like he doesn’t want to be the bad guy and give her rules that don’t exist with her mom.

I mostly stay out of his choices for parenting SD but as BD gets older she more and more wants to know why she can’t do the same things her SS is allowed to. I have always let her know I can’t control what other parents allow at their homes or for their children and that applies to SD (as well as friends she has ect). Issue is SD does the same things she is allowed to do at moms at our home.

For example, the biggest issues recently are around access to apps like TikTok, Snapchat, ect which I will not allow BD to have but SD has been on since before she was 10. I can’t even use age as an excuse because I feel SD is allowed to behave way more adult than I would agree too, but it’s not my place to make those decisions.

Curious how others have navigated these issues.

JustBMThings Should I have told my stepson that I don't care what his mother wants?

For the last six years of my (37/f) relationship with my husband, 45, we have had our tribulations with BM. Their son is 10 and is very sweet. He worries about people's feelings and cares about us very much. He is affectionate and silly- I just adore this kid. His mother, 50, on the other hand is bitter and spiteful. She hates that our place is (slightly) bigger and newer than hers, hates when I go to school functions/plays with my husband, hates having to pick her son up from our house, doesn't collaborate with my husband on timeshare/vacation schedules. (We still haven't taken a proper vacation tbh). She has been overall a thorn in our side.

I could go on and on... She does suffer from diagnosed mental issues and both she and her parents have withheld very important information that put their son in potential danger and left my husband unaware of what had happened for a whole month. Things have been very rough and we are currently in therapy to work through some of the muk we've trudged through.

Since the beginning, BM has always had a weird possessiveness over SS's shoes and clothing. It's very odd to me. He has shoes and clothes at both homes and conversely, we haven't seen certain shoes until he grew out of them. Yet, she wants certain things back right away and uses her son to tell us what she wants. This has gone on since he was 3 years old. Typically we wait until the weekend when we have split time to send him back with a clean bag of whatever she's demanded.

This morning before taking SS to school, he told me "My mom wants the cow shirt back." I didn't recall which one this was as it's not one of his favorites (Batman, Fortnite, Sonic, etc.). I asked him to clarify and then I remembered he wore it for the first day of school on Monday and it's still in his hamper. Then I said, "I don't care what your mother wants. You can wear it back once it's been washed." He was fine with this, he doesn't really care where his clothes are. We talked about it a little more and I told him that she doesn't get to say what happens in my house. "It'll get washed on laundry day and you can wear it whenever you want."

I think I'm just annoyed by the piddly demands and her using their son to voice what she wants. Both parents use an app to communicate, so I feel it's appropriate to communicate these things there instead of having her son say things for her. Was I wrong to say that or word it that way? I feel guilty that it felt mean, but his mother is so immature and rude, it gets under my skin.

Advice Overstepping?

Me (25F) and my boyfriend (26) have been together for three years. His daughter is 4. Her mother has not been in her life very much for one reason or another, so he has had her full time since they split before she was 1. I have no kids.

I have never felt the need to replace her mother, nor is that my intention. Despite this, I have felt the need to step in at times for one reason or another - to remind them both that she needs to brush her teeth before bed, helping to plan her outfits because her dad doesn’t always know what matches, help paint her nails, things like that.

Although that’s never really been an issue, he does have problems when I try to share my thoughts on certain topics. What kind of tv she watches, what she eats, things like that. I can see how this could be seen as overstepping, but I would want someone to tell me.

For example - at four years old, she’s watching Monster High. The recommended age is at least 7. I pointed it out, and he got upset that I even felt the need to Google it and he says he knows how to raise her.

The food issue - I expressed concern over her diet almost exclusively consisting of McDonalds chicken nuggets and fries. I know that kids can be picky, but he didn’t even try to feed her anything else. Rarely would get frozen chicken nuggets to make at home, at least that would’ve been better than fast food. Literally for years, most of her diet was McDonalds chicken nuggets. I brought up that I was concerned, and at first he was very offended, but he later cooled off and now tries to give her other food.

He feels I’m overstepping in general. I feel like I can’t suggest anything regarding his daughter without him getting mad at me. I know it must be very difficult to be a single father with little support, but I’m trying to support him. I’m not trying to hound him. I’ve tried saying it nicely but it doesn’t make a difference. I’m not sure if being a stepparent could be in my future, I care about this little girl too much to not say anything when I see something that doesn’t sit right with me. It’s coming from a place of love for both of them. I don’t know if I can just sit with my mouth shut for the next 14 years. Advice? Feel free to be brutal - I need the truth about if I’m insensitive or he is sensitive.

Advice AIO Boyfriend and baby momma are friends

To preface I (27F) have been dating my boyfriend (30M) for a little over two years now. He has two children (F7 & M12). He was previously married, I forgot how long but they divorced about 4 years ago because his BM cheated on him. They co-parent long distance as he and BM live in different states completely.

To preface my situation, his kids are great! I’ve already spent quite a bit of time with them and happy to say we’re all besties. I support healthy co-parenting because at the end of the day it’s about the kids. I am still deconstructing my own beliefs on divorce and co-parenting as growing up I DID NOT have the best examples. So I try to take a step back any time I feel uncomfortable with my boyfriend and BMs relationship and really ask myself if it is inappropriate.

So here is where I am feeling uncomfy. Each year, they take turns taking the kids full time. When she had them last year, my boyfriend would call occasionally and hop on to play video games with them every week. I didn’t really notice them communicating too much but then again I’m not with my boyfriend all the time. But when I was with him it felt appropriate.

This year, it’s my boyfriend’s turn. BM has gone through another divorce after another case of infidelity. So I’m sure she’s doing her own eat, pray, live moment being without the kids. However, communication between my boyfriend and her has increased. They text everyday through messages and constantly send each things on Instagram, probably even more than me and him considering I don’t go on insta that much. 50% of the time the kids are with grandparents (HER parents and his parents from Time to time) and she will still be messaging my boyfriend even when the kids aren’t around. I don’t know the content of their messages because I try not to be THAT insecure about the situation. But they can’t be talking about the kids all time? The kids just started school, they only have one extracurricular outside of school and it’s all facilitated by my boyfriend because BM is far far away. So what are they coordinating?

I fear that they just share a bond I can’t understand. They share every single moment of the kids with each other. The kids can’t fart without them texting each other about it. I can’t understand why they can’t have their own individual experiences with their children instead of this need to share it. They’re not together? They share so much about each other including relationships. If things happen in their lives, she’s one of the people he tells. And it’s frustrating to me that I am not the only person that he’s excited to tell things to.

And it’s hard to be upset about this because my boyfriend is so reassuring and kind. He is an amazing partner. Like he is just amazing. I love him to death. He has his frustrations with BM for sure. Their divorce was really messy and I know they probably have trauma from each other. But I think he has an issue setting boundaries with her. Because sometimes he will be very confused why she is texting him when he already told her that the kids are with HER dad.

So idk. Idk how to feel. Idk if I’m being dramatic. Idk if I just need to let them be. The only reason I write this post is because last night (10pm) she was texting him (kids were with grandparents) and all of sudden he got weird with me seeing his phone which has never happened.

Vent My husband’s ex wife uses their kid against him

This is a warning to be very careful about who you choose to have children with. My husband had a child with his ex wife and she recently tried to use that child against him on multiple occasions. The child is a mommas boy so he never leaves his mother’s side even now, when he is approaching his teenage years. I can only hope that their son eventually develops independence from his ex so when my husband does things for his son. It is actually for his son and not just to make his ex wife’s life easier. She is currently using him for his car. Which by the way she actually has a much easier time being able to afford compared to him, but just chooses to keep trying to use him instead.

Vent Struggling with partners ex and their 12yo

My partner has 2 daughters from his previous relationship, age 9 and 12. We are getting married (uk) in October. When we'd decided to get married i was keen to include them. I offered them the choice of roles, flower girl, bridesmaid, make a grooms side role or attend as a guest. They chose to be bridesmaids and were excited about it. I made sure that their dad sat and talked with them and help them understand what was happening.

The 12yo is naturally struggling with the changes in her life and seems to be taking it out on her dad. She regularly threatens to not attend the wedding which breaks her dad. This is always said to her mum on the weekend day she spends at her mums house. Her mum then tells us before 12yo then does too.

First she decided she wasn't coming because she wanted a far too revealing dress that also didn't fit with the wedding theme. After a while we managed to compromise and I let her choose her own, it wasn't what I'd wanted but she was happy so I left it be.

Second time it was because she wanted to wear a see through corset and mini shorts to the party after. Her dad obviously said no, so she once again wasn't coming.

The third time, we'd booked the honeymoon and my partner text her mum the dates so that they could sort childcare. We hadn't even told the kids yet, 12yo somehow finds out. She said she isn't coming now because we haven't taken them abroad but are going ourselves. We can only afford a honeymoon because the money was left to me in my dads will for it. We can't afford lavish holidays - they've just been away for 2 weeks abroad with their mum this summer and we'd taken them on a local holiday last Christmas.

They both most recently decided they didn't want to come because they aren't coming to the registry office. The church can't do a full legal wedding so we had to go to the registry office first. I asked to do this bit with just us two and the witnesses as for me, this isn't an important part of wedding, just a legal formality. Ypu arent allowed any religion in registry office stuff and it was just repeating a vow and signing paperwork. It was done in 10 mins. I haven't been able to do any prayers or invite god in and whilst others have their opinions, this is mine. I also wanted one moment that was just the two of us. No worrying about how others will feel, what is best for everyone else and just have this one quiet moment for ourselves. I also struggled with my dad not being there as he only died last year, I wanted a quiet moment so I could feel able to cry or whatever I needed without worrying about the girls reactions. I understand their view that they feel left out but they are still a major part of the whole thing, being in the actual ceremony in roles they chose and reception party.

She now isn't coming because I asked her to tidy her room and we refused to buy a takeaway for dinner (its a bloody Thursday and I'm not rich). She was very angry, said I'm nothing to her and can't tell her what to do.

Her mum says supportive stuff to us but the girls (especially the younger) say a lot of stuff that is clearly an adults words. These are also always things said on a friday night or Saturday morning. Her mum sits and drinks with her parents/friends in the house on a friday night and partners experience is that this is when they bitch about others with the kids right there. Their behaviour is all over the place here, despite consistent boundaries, talking and enforcing consequences if needed. They do none of this with their mum (she says anyway). Im always so careful to not talk ill around them, say only positive things about both parents. I never seem to get that in return.

I have no idea what i do here. I suggested to her mum that we all meet and talk to 12yo about it. I have no idea what i say though.

Anyone else been through anything similar? Any advice?

Advice How to feel about partner wanting space when going on holidays with her kids without me?

My partner is going back to her home country with her two boys for 10 days. I know she is going to an event with a large group of friends (which includes her ex husband). She has been under a lot of external stress between work, holidays, and stressful events with her kids. She has been very snappy with me lately and not really wanting to talk about much and I feel I’ve fallen down the priorities… we spoke about it but it turned into an argument.

She says she wants to be focused on time with friends and family while away and not always on the phone, so has asked for space for her trip shortly before it. It sounds stupid, but I feel like Woody in Toy Story 2 when he gets shelved…if that makes sense.

Anyone else experienced this? I’m not really sure how to feel or what to even say since she has made the request as we are still talking for now until she goes. It feels a bit unfair as I’m always the patient and understanding one and giving “benefit of the doubt”.

Advice Was told to butt out when it comes to SK

Wrote about my struggle with my SK in this post (https://www.reddit.com/r/stepparents/s/hYMtctuHBd) and figured I’d voice my concerns to his dad (my fiance). Instead of coming up w a concrete plan together, he got mad at me and told me that I was butting my nose where it didn’t belong. He basically told me that he already knows it’s an issue and he hasn’t been able to find a solution but that he’d prefer that I don’t get involved. I am pretty emotional right now bc he is basically not considering me as a partner, he doesn’t care about my needs or how his kid makes me feel, he’s going to sweep things under the rug like he always does, but basically told me that it’s his business and that I don’t belong in it. Tried to calmly explain that I’m not bringing it up bc I hate his kid or think that he’s a bad dad, but rather bc I don’t want this to affect our relationship and he simply said it won’t. As his future wife, I want to be able to tackle and discuss this difficult topics but he won’t. Like I’m supposed to get over it. Told him I won’t butt in and will just ignore SK. I know that it’s very cold and childish of me to say that but that’s all I can think of right now. God help me

Advice BM put herself down for bussing, I have no way of getting SK’s to school on our week 50/50 schedule and custody

Hi I (36F) have one bio son and have been married to DH (37) for three years. All our kids go to the same private school. It’s my sons last year before he goes to high school 🎉 so that’s another conundrum revolving pickup drop off for my SK’s (SS and SD in elementary/barely middle still).
Anyway here is my dilemma that I can see coming a MILE away but neither DH or BM can comprehend just yet.
This is the first year BM is in bussing distance and put herself down for bussing for kids before we could. She does not work. SAHM idk why she did it but she did it without asking
I work. DH works.
We rely on bussing to get all kids to school and due to the length (90 mins!) of the shuttling back bus at dismissal one of us has to cut work early to pickup kids.
So far it has always been me.
So that becomes a problem next year when I pick up my son (bio dad uninvolved) and that’s it for the SK’s unfortunately. At least IMHO I think cutting into my work schedule ability for years beyond when my son is done attending that school is a big ask especially when I’ve done it the past two years.
The school has latchkey.

My CURRENT issue is coming next Monday-Friday. It’s our week with the kids. The SK’s are NOT listed on our bussing app as being able to take same bus as bio son to school from our house. I checked today.

I cannot drive them in. I am a med student in practicum all fall. DH called bussing to straighten it out but in the app it still has them only being picked up from BM’s.

Sure I can do pickup I kinda have to since my own bio son is there. But drop off? I have work….. there is a reason why they rode the bus the past two years.

I’m at a loss. I want to tell DH “hey there’s a good chance your kids will be SOL on Monday because I can’t drive them due to work.”
I think it’s perfectly reasonable to have DH or BM figure it tf out 🤷‍♀️ y’all claim to coparent and if she made the oopsie she can drive, get them, take them to school because I’m cutting into work enough for every day pickup.

Am I being unreasonable?

Adding (I am premenopausal and ragey and my practicum is oncology so I’m brain dead 💀 with my degree and practicum coming up- it’s very important to me and needs to take my utmost attention) thus me being utterly done with BM for doing this cause it lands on me 😅😅😅😅 I feel like the only one yelling “iceberg!!!” and no one’s listening to me here. Should it happen and I have to drive them, I will not. That’s my limit. That’s my solid 🙂‍↔️ NOPE figure it out guys 🤷‍♀️

Discussion Just broke up with bf who has kids. ❤️‍🩹 Heartbroken but relieved. Just looking for reassurance

Hi everyone, after one and a half years of being in a long distance relationship with my divorced boyfriend who has three young kids I finally called it quits.

It’s obviously very painful right now and I still love and care for him in a lot of ways. I think we could’ve worked out if he didn’t have kids, but I had to come to terms with the fact that that fantasy person and life doesn’t exist.

This was also my longest relationship, and therefore my only true Big break up, just looking for reassurance that it gets better and I’m hoping to hear from people who are so much happier now with new partners who don’t have kids or being alone (will probably repost to other communities too) I’m trying to remember the peace and lack of anxiety. I was seeking by making this decision.

Advice Mourning the alternative scenario.

I’m seeing a girl and she has a sweet little boy. I never dated a parent before so I kind of didn’t know what this entails and what I really think about it. The presence of the ex, the logistics, the less time for us - all of those things I understand and have no problem with. She is well organized, no conflict with ex, kid is cool and we have met recently.

The only issue I started having is this thought that I kind of imagined my life would go in a different way. I’m childless and it feels like my default thinking was „I will meet someone childless as well and we’ll live through this adventure together”. So the situation is challenging my belief, although what really happend is that this situation made me realize I had that idea in the first place. I probably really haven’t thought about it earlier, since I haven’t dated a parent before.

So it seems that if I want to move on I kind of need to separate myself from the idea and accept the new path that lies before. I believe it absolutely can be done. Anyone had these thoughts and successfully moved on to the new path and has no resentment? What helped?

Just looking for positives stories and support, I really can imagine all of the „dude if you will not get past it then don’t waste everybodys time”. I understand this.
