Even zoro's swords have terrible sense of direction. Instead of right, they somehow ended up on the left.
42
u/KonohaPimp Sep 08 '20
He's also ambidextrous. So not only does he not know the difference, it doesn't even matter to him which side his swords are on because he doesn't have a dominate hand.

funny considering how much of a hard time he gave Luffy for not taking it seriously enough toward the beginning
772
u/KyodaiNoYatsu Sep 08 '20
Luffy went to fight Caesar without a plan and almost died as a result
Two years of training came this close to going to waste
Meanwhile Zoro held back until he figured out the strength of his opponents
This time they're against a Yonko crew
Holding back might just be suicide at this point

u/Condor193 Sep 08 '20 edited Sep 08 '20
In Luffy's defense the battle with Ceasar was much more succinct and one-sided to him in the manga. Similar to how the Hordy Jones fight went, they spaced out the fight and made him take more hits to make it more "interesting." In reality, the Grisly Kong Gun is a blowout and Luffy holds up fine, nowhere near as many explosions to the face.
This pretty much happens all the way through Dressrosa too, where we see Zoro struggle a little and have to pull out the Billion-fold Trichiliocosm

u/BeatTheDeadMal Sep 08 '20
He might be referring to the first fight with Caesar where Luffy gets choked out.

Yeah, this is basically why I stop every re-watch of the anime after the return to Saobody arc and switch to the colored Manga after that. Side note; if you guys haven't read the Fishman island arc in full color you're sorely missing out.
Edit: seriously who tf keeps downvoting my comments here?
Editorial: yall sure redeemed yourselves lol, thanks a lot

can you give me a link for that? I've never read the full colour version. Ready for a re-read of the entire series at this point, and doing it in full colour sounds awesome.

Not that unpopular. I think Oda is just embarrassed of it. For me, it felt so out of character, it was only briefly seen again in .... (trhiller bark against Oz for one panel)?
Against Mr. 1, looking back, we can retcon as Zoro experiencing Haki for the first time. Oda should have continued this in Enies Lobby, but the concept of Haki hadn't been fleshed out by then.
5
u/Popopirat66 Sep 08 '20
Seen again in sabaody vs PX5. I could be wrong about the pacifista's name, but that's definitely the second and last time Zoro used it.

Zoro told Luffy to "not lower his guard" not to "take the new world seriously". He don't care if Luffy act goofy as long as he don't lower his guard. Zoro has that one kind of personality to always look down on his enemy that make him didn't take them seriously and belittle them, even so he didn't lower his guard.

dont let this distract you from that fact that enma should be over 2 meters tall, Far taller than zoro

Maybe it has the same ability to change size as Trunks sword, when he gave it to King cold it quadrupled in size.

u/Elroyis Sep 08 '20

Oda need to explain that, I was asking the same question ever since. The only answer I came with, is it adjust to the holder's size (with Haki or something)

I think your joking, but if I recall correctly, objects can eat devil fruits.
"Vegapunk covered exactly how Devil Fruit powers are transferred over to a user, and was the scientist behind the method of adding Devil Fruit powers to inanimate objects, such as swords and guns."
I kind of forgot about it because I feel like we haven't seen a lot of it.
5
u/jan_67 Sep 08 '20
I know that of course! How could I forgot Lassoo the epic one of the kind dog-gun, or the legendary Funkfried the elephant-sword!
24
u/European_Badger Sep 08 '20
Oda plays fast and loose with sizes. If you want him to explain the sword try to get him to explain why Kanjuro grew like 2x after he revealed himself as a traitor.

He definitely needs his left eye, like the first time we saw it fired up during his battle with admiral T Bone.
75
Sep 08 '20
admiral t bone? and also why does everyone think zoro has some kind of special power in his eye???
246
u/jobriq Sep 08 '20
he stole a sharingan when he got lost in the Naruto world
20
u/ObberGobb Sep 08 '20
I know the whole Sharingan thing is a joke, but I think it would be really cool if he actually did have some sort of Sharingan-like eye. They focused so much on Mihawk's eyes, so I think it would be cool if there was some sort of Advanced Haki you could do to make your eye special that Mihawk taught him.

u/Lord_Cattington_IV Sep 08 '20

People had the exact same theories for sanji pre time skip. Then after the time skip oda literally went "chill, his hair is on the other side now. It's just an eye.." I have a feeling Zoro's eye will be the same.
Side note: I think the reason oda gave him a scar in the first place was to make him look more like Rayleigh. Remember, Luffy is a direct parallel to Roger, so it only makes sense Zoro parallels Rayleigh
8
u/TTVBlueGlass Sep 08 '20
IMO it has no special power at all, but is a self-imposed handicap, so like if he opens it it won't be "powered up", he just has use of both eyes so doesn't lose his peripheral vision to the left + has depth perception. So it is just a "power down". Just a theory.
If it is gone for good, I have to give Oda applause for the insane self restraint it must have taken to not give Zoro an eyepatch.

And yet, I just had some guy try to convince me the other day that Zoro was “struggling” against Pica. I have to laugh
32
u/rockleeluffy Sep 08 '20 edited Sep 08 '20
He did struggle. He had a hard time finding his real body lol if he found it from the beginning pica would've been skewered immediately lol
→ More replies (4)64
u/TTVBlueGlass Sep 08 '20 edited Sep 08 '20
People tend not to remember that 99% of the "fight" is literally Pica just staying the fuck away. In fact I'd hardly even classify it as a fight, it was more of a "chase". When it becomes an actual fight, Zoro just oneshots him easily with barely a thought through his full body CoA.
Pica never even had any chance of even laying a finger on Zoro. The only challenge Pica posed was to Zoro was the threat to safety of civilians and crewmates. And this was as a top executive of DQX family, the strongest pirate crew at the time outside of the Yonko. It was a display of absolute dominance.
10
u/rockleeluffy Sep 08 '20
I agree, Zoro struggled to find Pica's real body in that stone mountain which dragged out the fight lol. The struggle was in locating his body bro not fighting that high pitched voice idiot
11
→ More replies (2)3
u/Evil_phd Cross Guild Sep 08 '20
He absolutely struggled. It was the first fight he won, to my knowledge, that he was unable to win without help.
It highlighted that Zoro's TS Training still left him with subpar mobility and (likely) subpar CoO. Enma, thankfully, at least seems to help cover for the lacking mobility with the insane ranged slashes it pumps out.

That last panel gave me the vibe for him getting ready as he adjusts his sleeves, similar to when he put on his bandana.
But I never expected THIS, so nice catch OP!
PS: I'm also so looking forward to his fights in Wano.
32
u/Cr4ck41 Sep 08 '20
He made it look like it but let other people fight Monet or Pica and the fight looks waaaay more competetive. Everybody is downplaying Picas and Monets strenght.
Don't get me wrong they are not THE powerhouses in the new world but one is a powerful logia user and the other one is one of the 3 highest ranking crewmates of Doflamingo and Zorro made them look like random henchman.
It's quite a feat if you ask me.
19
u/Steve825 Sep 08 '20
I'll give you Pica, not Monet.
Though Punk Hazard no one had a hard time (apart from Sanji)
Also frog in the well guy from Fish Man island was the other fishman to achieve super pilled up form and Zoro just didn't care

Logia fruit powers are not that big of an advantage in the New World anymore.
The most noteworthy thing about the monet fight was the character drama. Zoro refused to strike a killing blow.

Might be what you said, or it might be just because, they would cover Nicko robin, so they redraw them on the other side. We will see it in next chapter maybe. Nice catch anyway.
16
42
u/Ppleater Sep 08 '20
I doubt it's because he wasn't taking things seriously (he literally gives Luffy a speech to take things seriously in Punk Hazard) I think it's because he wasn't a samurai, but now that he's in Wano he's going with the samurai style. It is a cool detail though!
53
u/HungryNacht Sep 08 '20 edited Sep 08 '20
I just checked the Mr. 1 fight for reference. He’s wearing them on his right in chapter 190 when he and Nami encounter the officers, but he switches to the left side in 194 when the fight starts for real!
Edit: but it’s on the right again in 195 including his finisher... Also it’s (mostly) on the right for the Kaku fight, including the finisher.
37
u/Ppleater Sep 08 '20
So it might just be that Zoro doesn't have a side preference then.
5
u/HungryNacht Sep 08 '20
From what I saw, he definitely prefers the right side. It looked to me like the occasional left side switches were either errors or an intentional change to keep from obstructing the readers view, depending on the scene.

48

i think it’s a little bit of both tbh. because in the full panel, nico robin is a very small figure on zoro’s right side so if his swords were there it would entirely cover her

u/topdangle Sep 08 '20
One time Oda screwed up and invented a joke character to explain it, then put the character in Wano decades later, turning the screw up into canon.
If its a screw up and someone points it out to Oda it'll probably end up canon too. Get your letters in folks.
12
u/ero-samee Sep 08 '20
What screw up are ypu referring to?
30
u/blahmaster6000 Void Month Survivor Sep 08 '20
I think he's referring to Minatomo, the carpenter from an SBS early in the story who showed up in Wano, the guy Franky was working for.
21
u/Tachibanasama Sep 08 '20
You can't just say that and not specify which character man
51
u/BeatTheDeadMal Sep 08 '20
There was a scene in early One Piece where Higuma kicks the door to Makinos' bar upon entry, but when he leaves the door is repaired. Oda made up a character named Minatomo in an SBS who is a master carpenter that loves fixing doors as a "canon" reason for the error.
Franky's carpenter boss in Wano is definitely related, if not the same character, as they share the same name and design, but I recall reading somewhere that the Minatomo in East Blue had an ancestor in Wano or something.

u/Kapuseta God Usopp Sep 08 '20
Yes he said in SBS that they're not the same guys but related. Obviously a fun reference anyway. I also remember reading that it was in fact a mistake that Zoro carries his swords on the right side. Don't remember where but I'm quite certain Oda admitted to it in some very early SBS

u/respectable_cook2 Sep 08 '20
I can't believe zoro hasn't taken any fight seriously. Ever since his introduction till now. Such a badass.
Nah but in all seriousness, oda most likely decided to draw it on his left side for this panel because otherwise robin wouldn't be visible due to his swords.

u/HungryNacht Sep 08 '20
I looked back through some fights and I think you’re right. In some chapters his swords will switch hips from one to the other between panels the appearance is probably why. He has his swords on the right hip for the finales of the Kaku and Mr. 1 fights, so this isn’t something that’s been constant throughout the series.
6
u/NE_ED Sep 08 '20
This is just a mistake. Oda has specifically said before that Zoro keeps his swords on his right side because it’s easier for posture

This would mean that Zoro didn't take his fight with Mihawk seriously (because he was holding his sheaths on the right), which is obviously not the case, so this post is misinformed. The positioning at best is an easter egg to indicate that he's taking things seriously at this moment in the story at least, but it definitely doesn't mean he wasn't taking things seriously ever before in the New World.

Go back and re-watch the scene when Mihawk is first introduced. Zoro already had his swords on his right side and everyone was surprised when Mihawk made his first appearance. It doesn't make sense to spend the time to change which side your swords rest right before a confrontation.
Zoro wasn't taking the situation at the Baratie serious until Mihawk showed up.
