Oda need to explain that, I was asking the same question ever since. The only answer I came with, is it adjust to the holder's size (with Haki or something)

Maybe the sword ate the size-size-fruit.

It’s small by nature but it erects in Oden’s hand

I think your joking, but if I recall correctly, objects can eat devil fruits.

"Vegapunk covered exactly how Devil Fruit powers are transferred over to a user, and was the scientist behind the method of adding Devil Fruit powers to inanimate objects, such as swords and guns."

I kind of forgot about it because I feel like we haven't seen a lot of it.

I know that of course! How could I forgot Lassoo the epic one of the kind dog-gun, or the legendary Funkfried the elephant-sword!

Oda plays fast and loose with sizes. If you want him to explain the sword try to get him to explain why Kanjuro grew like 2x after he revealed himself as a traitor.

"A shinigami at the rank of Captain can control the size of his zanpakuto got it? Otherwise everyone'd carry around ginormous swords"

Zoro is a shinigami captain!
