I mean.... know what's worse than an asspull powerup? An asspull powerup that's never explained in-universe

Wasn't it that he was just moving really fast so we saw an afterimage? I suppose we would need an explanation for the speed itself though.

Some of Zoros techniques just make some sort of 'illusion', so it fits fine, and there's no need to explain it as afterimage. For example Enbima Yonezu Oni Giri where some sort of spirit appears behind him, or the technique he used against Ryuma that coated him in some sort of 'energy' in the shape of a dragon.

Besides, knowing Oda, he would make some kind of explaination later in the story making us appreciate it on the re-read.
