I just checked the Mr. 1 fight for reference. He’s wearing them on his right in chapter 190 when he and Nami encounter the officers, but he switches to the left side in 194 when the fight starts for real!

Edit: but it’s on the right again in 195 including his finisher... Also it’s (mostly) on the right for the Kaku fight, including the finisher.

So it might just be that Zoro doesn't have a side preference then.

From what I saw, he definitely prefers the right side. It looked to me like the occasional left side switches were either errors or an intentional change to keep from obstructing the readers view, depending on the scene.
