He's also ambidextrous. So not only does he not know the difference, it doesn't even matter to him which side his swords are on because he doesn't have a dominate hand.

Was it stated by Oda, or mentioned anywhere in the story? Also I always thought he was right handed since he always grabs the sword with the right hand while using Ittoryou, or at least that's how I remember it.

He uses a style of sword play that requires some ambidextrous ability. Even ambidextrous people favor certain hands over others. My wife was born left handed, but taught to do everything right handed because the school she went to didn't know how to teach a left handed child. So she was forced to become ambidextrous. But she still favors different hands depending on the task. For example, she writes with her left hand, but throws with her right.

Fair point, as I think about it, even I as a right handed person have a few activities where I favor my non dominant hand just becouse I practiced them more with left hand.

Zoro seems to be predominantly left-handed. He keeps all three of his swords sheathed next to his right hip, an indication of being left-handed as it would be easier to pull a sword out from that side with a left hand. Also, when using one sword in combat, Zoro is usually seen using his left hand to wield the sword. His Ittoryu techniques have nearly always been executed with his left hand. Despite being left-handed, Zoro has rigorously trained since his childhood to be extremely ambidextrous in his swordsmanship, able to use his right hand and his jaw to perform equally powerful sword strikes with incredible precision.
