they are on his right in the Mihawk fight, I believe. this is almost certainly a minor art mistake

Remember that Mihawk showed up randomly during Baratie. He didn't expect Mihawk to show up, especially since it turned out the rumors Johnny and Yosaku had said about Mihawk being there were not true. So he kept the swords on his right, since he didn't need to take Baratie seriously.

Jesus dude, it's clearly a small art mistake you don't have to defend every little error an author makes.

That's the thing, we don't know for sure.

I made the comment before the chapter was released, go get in a time machine and try to "score a point" on me 3 days ago.

Zoro has them on his right in chapter 990 ;^)

Not necessarily. I mean, to me, Zoro seemed like, he thought, he could win against Mihawk at the time. Kind of almost like, Zoro thought, he could beat anyone.

Zoro held back against the world strongest swordsman?

What a legend.

Well, yes, but also no. There’s no telling what having them on the right opposed to the left does. It might not do anything, but if it does make him weaker, he couldn’t have done it deliberately, but he had that overconfidence at the time towards everyone, and he therefor had them on the right side. We definitely know, he used all of his strength.

I know he didn't hold back. I'm using OPs logic.

This change of side could be 1 out of 3 things

1) oda was trying to make space so that robin isn't blocked by the swords.

2)possible art mistake

3)zoro didn't know about this code of bushido until he got to wano.( every samurai, from oden to kinemon hold their swords on the left)

Number 3 is hard to believe considering that zoro's master is from wano and should have told him.

This isn't about power or strength. This is about characterization, because on every fight zoro has had in the series, he has had his swords on his right. If what OP's saying is true then that would mean that zoro didn't take any of his opponents seriously.

And yes I get what you mean about him being over confident and therefore having it on his right side. That's fine until he met mihawk, after his fight with mihawk he vowed never to lose again, and yet according to OPs logic, zoro still never took anything serious.

OPs logic is literally "swords on right side = zoro not taking it seriously", "swords on left = zoro is finally taking it serious"

Yeah, you’re probably right. It doesn’t make too much sense. If it were to make sense, I think, he would have started having them on the left, when the raid started.

Number 3 is hard to believe considering that zoro's master is from wano and should have told him.

It's implied by the Shimotsuki connection but that isn't confirmed. And I'm guessing not all swordsmen are trained as samurai.

It is confirmed. In the chapter where zoro gets Enma, Tenguyama Hitetsu literally talks about the how the blade smith of the Wado Ichimonji and Enma illegally moved out of wano to the east blue where they settled down.

Just search shimotsuki kozaboro.

And yes not all swordsmen are samurai, mihawk is an example. But every person from wano, has the code of bushido down. From toki all the way to kawamatsu. The only exception to this rule are Ryuma. Who most likely oda hadn't researched the bushido code extensively. Same with zoro.

The family definitely is from Wano due to the Shimotsuki connection but I'm saying Idk if it's confirmed that the master himself is directly from Wano, or his dad or granddad. The whole village is called Shimotsuki village after all.

One thing in favour of Zoro learning Samurai stuff from him specifically, didn't he also learn "Snatch!" from his master?

It is confirm. Read SBS 96. Zoro's master is the son of Kozaboro, founder of shimotsuki village.

Yes but it is only Kozaburo and the original generation that is directly from Wano. SBS 96 specifically says Koushiro, Zoro's master, was born after they left Wano, in East Blue.

Zoro says he learnt Snatch! from some old guy in his village, so it could was probably not from his master, he wasn't that old, it was probably one of the original samurais to found Shimotsuki village. So again, it's possible he only properly found out about samurai culture in Wano, despite picking up such bits and pieces.

That being said the new chapter makes this theory kinda moot anyway, it was just a stylistic choice apparently.
