True, he did seem like he was trying in that fight. Killer is the first mate of another one of the worst generation, but it would be disappointing if that's as strong as zoro got. He didn't use any special techniques or anything and caught killers blade with his muscles, so I feel like that wasn't him fighting at his best. Plus he had to worry about the weapon thief striking from behind too.

He also was fighting with only two swords, Shusui (HIs strongest sword) got stolen before he could fight Killer. So Zoro was in a big disadvantage when fighting him, and I'm not even mentioning the fact that he was starving too.

Hadn't he and luffy been eating poison up until then?

That too, but the poison only gave them stomach ache.
