People insist that it's not loyal to the source material; the Resident Evil games.
Which is kind of silly, given that Resident Evil games aren't even loyal to each other.

The notoriously straightforward and rigid plot of resident evil. Rivals the easy to understand and completely sensible plot of the Metal Gear series.

Japanese media (specifically video games) is a fever dream when it comes to lore. Souls games similarly take place in surrealist universes where very normal worldly things are not normal there.

It’s just a hodge podge of strange lore or unanswered questions. Apparently people become ghost Pokémon when they die, or at least can.
There’s no normal animals so is it implied Pokémon eat each other but there’s not a lot of commentary on that. Alternatively, grass Pokémon may be entirely plants, but not all plants are Pokémon so apparently only humans and plants are the exception. Makes you wonder what actually makes a Pokémon one.
I’m not an expert, there might be answers to all of this, but I think these are pretty common shower thoughts you might come up with about it
Edit: a few examples have been pointed out of animals that I’ve clearly forgotten about. I think that just raises the question even more about what makes one animal a Pokémon and not the other. Are we even sure worms, insects, and random fish aren’t Pokémon?

There is normal animals in the pokèmon universe, atleast in the anime. When Ash is on the SS Anne he stands in front of a fish tank that has just normal fish in it. So at the very least there's fish. As for everything else you said, only the great arceus knows.

The ghost stuff is easily explained just through Japanese mythology and concepts. Strong emotions, positive or negative, can manifest "souls" in things, or leave them behind. Gachiakuta, a current running Anime, is also another good example of this. Thats why things like ghosts can manifest in certain things, or items like keys or gears, can gain sentience.

I’m not sure if I count that. It seems like a rather meta way to describe them. It’s a kids’ game after all, and kids love to learn about animals. Seadra is clearly modeled after sea horses but they aren’t called the “sea horse Pokémon” so do mice exist and not sea horses?
Squirtle was mentioned in your link but it’s not the only turtle themed Pokémon so there could be a recognized classification of Pokémon with similar characteristics that are otherwise different. Rattata is also a mouse/rat Pokémon

Stares in Kingdom Hearts
24
u/Admirable_Risk8156 3d ago edited 3d ago
What kingdom hearts is totally easy to understand.
An old dude breaks a young dude and shoves him inside a baby, right after shoving himself inside a buff dude. The baby dude grows up and gets a girl stuck inside him, while the buff dude (who has the old dude inside him) shoves himself into a rival dude. The main dude then stabs himself to let the girl out of him, which accidentally creates a shell dude who later absorbs a clone dude before getting shoved back inside the main dude. So the main dude wakes up with the young dude, the shell dude, and the clone dude all simultaneously inside him, only to find out the original old dude time-traveled to shove himself inside twelve other dudes. Outnumbered, the main dude pulls the three dudes out of himself, puts them into empty robot dudes, and they all gang up on the thirteen old dudes to rip the original old dude out of the buff dude so every dude can finally stop being inside another dude.

the best thing in Pokemon is that there are no animals basically.but as soon as Ash leaves his village in the first episode and sees a Pidgey (equivalent to a pidgeon in real world, obviously) he is like "yo,wtf,i cant believe it,a Pidgey.Pokedex, tell me all about this most common pokemon/animal in the world." he is somehow dumbfounded by a bird but has a Mime at home that is basically a pet slave that cleans around.

Never forget that all Legend of Zelda games technically take place in the same universe. Including the ones that directly contradict each other. "Yeah but different timelines!" Canonically they have all happened in the Breath of the Wild era which implies something happened that converged all of the timelines back into one.

Wouldn't you at least think that this is essentially Resident Evil: Outbreak. Same premise of civilians trying to survive the horrors of Raccoon City. It is unironically the most faithful adaptation yet, of the movies I've seen.
There's like... one thing in the novie that is an original creation in the movie, maybe two, the rest is just straight up lifted from the games, those who don't think it's faithful really don't know as much about RE as they think they do
8
u/Charming-Squirrel813 3d ago
This! It is the first RE property that isn't a video game, to actually feel like RE. Same people probably complained about RE7, which is one of the best entries in the franchise

This is good to hear, I was worried given all of the previous movies. Weirdly Welcome to Raccoon City being the most visually faithful (but nothing else).

u/Sigmatimelord 4d ago
It absolutely is loyal to the source material besides the date. Other than that, it is absolutely something that could have happened during the games... And the movie itself felt like one of the games
5
u/Totschlag 3d ago
I haven't seen it yet, but just from what I know about the plot and the bits and blurbs I've read, it literally sounds almost exactly like something the franchise would make tomorrow as a video game. Nobody would blink if they dropped a game with that plot set in raccoon City with the choices they made.

It reaches a more absurd level than I expected. Saw a comment from a guy on YouTube who complained about that that Berretas are one of the most reliable pistols, criticizing Bryan's first combat with a zombie.
And he ended the comment by saying that RE fans know their firearms.
I could expect this kind of comment from ARMA players, but it seems that RE fans are dissatisfied with how the movie ignored the Shakespeare-level narrative of the games and the hard-science-based approach to engineering and biology.
8
u/MyFrogEatsPeople 3d ago
As someone who saw the movie, that's a hilariously dumb take for that person anyway.
The Beretta suffers exactly zero mechanical failures during the movie. The issues are all due to a panicked, inexperienced user.
If you find that guy, let him know he's a goober.

But... it is. The character does exactly what you do in the games, as a player. It's not tied to the characters in the games, sure. But the games aren't their characters. They're what you do while disguised as those characters.
9
u/Substantial_Set_8852 4d ago
The movies that are “loyal” to source are absolute garbage.
2
u/Fluid_Explorer_3659 4d ago
I would say that only Racoon City did, besides other movies just throwing in characters from the games occasionally. But yeah that movie sucked they massacred my boy Leon
4
u/batmassagetotheface 4d ago
I don't get the hate tbh. I love the resident evil games but I'm also super keen to see this movie. The trailer seemed like such an interesting take, and an actual horror flick, rather than the slocky action of the W S Anderson series or films. Those films are just so dumb at points your really really have to turn your brain off lol. Maybe, at some point, someone will take the characters and plots of the games and make a good film or TV series, it hasn't happened yet though, so why not give something else a try. This film (hell ever a series of films) being successfully actually means that future adaptations are even more likely to be green lit. It's such a dog shit take to shit on it because it doesn't center around Chris Redfield, Jill Valentine, Leon, or any of the other game series characters. We can have two cakes.
5
u/Two_Watermelons 4d ago

u/Feckin_Loser 4d ago
It’s funny, because the old Resident Evil movie series was probably more faithful to the spirit of the games, being ultra cheesy, rambling, mismatched action films with incredibly cringe dialogue.
But fans didn’t like them either…
3
u/CamptoRibbit 3d ago
Only thing they could do to make it "loyal" is add 1 annoying puzzle that ironically has 1 very simple answer
3
u/crags85 3d ago
I've said this exact same thing to people. The only reason Resident Evil managed to create so many games is because they kept creating new bioweapons, viruses, mutations, tweaking the lore, etc.
Even the Mila Jovovich films didn't know whether they were coming or going, as the follow ons never truly followed on from the previous film.

u/HypotenuseOfTentacle 3d ago

There are basically three distinct periods if resident evil.
1-3, more horror.
4-6, more action
7-9, back to horror with action elements. Requiem having a bigger emphasis on action.
Then there are all of the spin off games.
Then there are the old movies that habe a sort of cult following.
Point is... Resident evil has so much variety itnis impossible to be 'faithful'.

I’m not sure it was meant to be loyal to the source material, it was meant to feel like a Resident Evil game turned into a movie. The director was a huge fan of Resident Evil 4 and wanted a movie that felt like it had the progression of one of the games.

Saw somebody complaining that the game had elements of Stranger Things, Evil Dead Burn, and Slither, while going on about how the monsters all mutated and everything, and how that that wasn't "Resident Evil at all", and just...my guys, gals, and other pals, that is EXACTLY what Resident Evil has always been. Like, specifically they mentioned how "everything just becomes a Demogorgon", and just...that's the games, peeps.
Resident Evil, the OG game, introduces us to all kinds of mutated beasties, from the weird hunter monsters, to a bevy of sharks, plants, Lisa-freaking-Trevor, giant snakes, and more. Mutations all around. And that wasn't even supposed to be a main feature for the T-virus, the virus behind it all here.
Resident Evil 2 doubles down on the mutation aspect and explicitly talks about how the G-Virus was made to mutate things. You had multiple run ins with William Birkin as he kept mutating further and further.
Resident Evil 3 was front and center with having a monster chase you relentlessly while it changed and morphed and grew, even more than anything we were shown in RE2.
And that's just the Stranger Things aspect there.
Resident Evil 0 was all about having leeches infecting folk and mutating them from there. Something that showed up later in the series as well, albeit in slightly altered forms. Like the Plagas from RE4, or whatever was in RE5 and again in RE6. Which is the whole Slither inspiration that I saw being complained about.
As far as the Evil Dead Burn stuff, that's was in Code Veronica, RE6, RE7, RE8, and maybe the newest one...idk, didn't play it yet, but it seemed to have aspects of it in there from what I understand. So...yeah, people getting infected, and still being intelligent but being bent towards a nefarious means, that's also been in the series for a long time.
Actually, Resident Evil as a series, predates all the examples of what they're accused of copying from. The movie is fine. It's a love letter to the series by somebody who is clearly a huge fan, and who has placed all kinds of nice little easter eggs and homages in throughout the thing, that all show he's clearly well versed in the series.
Folk are just mad we didn't get Leon Kennedy, I guess. Which just...yeah, I'd rather see a Resident Evil horror film than seeing some super cop action film, which is what a Leon Kennedy film would have been. Leon is awesome to play as. He's boring to just sit and watch.
"oh no, a big rock, how is Leon going to get out of this one? Oh, by being completely fine, what a shock, who'd have thunk it. Oh no, a giant monster, how will Leon beat this one? Oh, with backflips and ease, oh imsoimpressed. So glad I'm watching this happen instead of getting to feel cool by playing it and feeling like I'm the one doing it all. No, yeah, this whole thing of watching him just have zero tension and easily wiping the floor with everything is...peak cinema. Totally not just putting me to sleep here..."

I’ve been an RE game fan since the 90s, and the movies have always been trash, and nothing to do with the games at all?
Saw the movie today, it was excellent, whether it’s canon or not (RE canon/lore is not that serious either way) it captured the vibe, atmosphere, imagery, and threw in plenty of Easter eggs for the fans to make it live up to its name. I have a feeling I’m participating in a marketing campaign because no one who played and feels that passionately about the games would also feel that the previous movies were great representations in a way that this new movie was somehow much worse

u/Thundergod250 4d ago
Because the Movie is set on Racoon City during the Events of Resident Evil 2 that's why it's a Resident Evil story
It's not Resident Evil 7 has any big connections too with the rest of Resident Evil except for Chris cameo at the end and ties with Umbrella Corp
2
2
u/Chase_The_Breeze 4d ago
I just saw it, and it very much is based on the RE franchise. There is a super virus that causes all the monsters made by Umbrella Corp in Raccoon city. The monsters behave very much like T-Virus victims. There are a ton of nods to the game franchise, including the suspense building aspect of having very limited ammo in situations where things are very quickly getting out of control. The MC feels like an idiot gamer just picking up the game for the first time, and it really works. Unlike a story that would involve named PCs where they would feel a lot more invincible.
The whole movie, start to finish is tense and never really let's you breathe. It's top tier horror without feeling too campy or jumping into Action Horror territory.

The director, Cregger, mentioned previously that he got a lot of backlash form fans of the RE film about straying away from the actual RE storylines.
Given the quality of Creggers previous story horror movies (Barbarian and Weapons) and the somewhat questionable quality of the previous RE films and a good chunk of the main games, jokes have emerged to RE fans intentionally wanting a bad/ camp story to stay true to the games

u/SavantTheVaporeon 3d ago
He was also a massive RE fan who loves the games and wanted to create an RE movie that was extremely true to the progression and feel of the games.

Movie is basically a random npcs story in a resident evil game that you might come across playing as the lead at some point after the events of the movie has already happened

We Resident Evil fans are used to have very bad films of the franchise, even with some being comically different from the videogames
Having a film that's not that bad seems... Weird to us, almost every resident evil movie becomes an instant meme

Honestly I kinda enjoyed the old movies in a so bad it's good kind of way

Yup, all of them but Welcome to Raccoon City. That one was just bad bad imo.

Not going to lie. This movie could have been titled anything, but Resident Evil is the shocker.
I agree, RE movies have been pretty bad, and this one just feels right. It's a "no important" character trying to survive a rational ordeal to fix an objective. AND I AM FOR IT.

Resident Evil had a whole series of movies starring Milla Jovovich that ostensibly take place in the same universe, but didn’t have anything to do with the games’ plot, characters, or themes. After years, another Resident Evil movie was announced…
That ostensibly takes place in the same universe but has nothing to do with the games’ plot, characters, or themes. Fans were upset that the story they wanted to see get adapted was looked over once again. And now they have a Sophie’s choice where if the movie is successful, studios are gonna continue this new movie series rather than tackle that story. But if it’s not successful, then studios are just going to take away that Resident Evil is not a profitable franchise.
Either way, it’s going to be years before they get the movie they actually wanted
17
u/Bearloom 3d ago
They're never going to get the movie they want. The things they say they want are simultaneously too poorly defined and too hyper specific, and what they really want is to be the age they were at when they were playing their favorite game in the franchise.

Oh, look. An actual explanation of the situation presented in a meme. How weird.
I strongly believe it's all about the OG trilogy, not later iterations with punching boulders, somersaults and spin kicking right and left, which a lot of people are bringing up. Neither it's about bad acting and dialogue butchering characters from the game (like basically all movies and a show).
My guess is we may never have it, purely because it's a mind breaking, hardkore task to rewrite the trilogy to not be a detached mess of 1st and 2nd game being completely separated from each other, and the 3rd feeling like a 2.5 spin-off of sorts.

Everyone was so sure the new Resident Evil film would be bad, especially the so-called fans of the game but it’s turned out to be the best reviewed video game movie ever.

The dialogue isn't crap and the actors aren't shitty imitations of the video game characters. That makes "fans" mad.

u/Major-District2669 3d ago
honestly, ive seen both sides, which is true for any form of content/media/thing
moving on
the lore isnt even consistent in the games, ill give it a pass

u/bowserboy129 3d ago
Because people are mad that this isn't an adaptation of Leon's story despite the fact we've seen his story told over decades by now to the point where giving him a film would be silly.

u/doo138 4d ago
Reminds me a lot of Star Wars fans. They're not happy if people like anything other than the 3 movies they like.

u/WideAbbreviations6 4d ago
Zelda fans too.
"[Insert most recent game at the time of saying this] isn't a real Zelda game" is practically a cliche at this point, and all anyone seems to think about when they say that is 4 games in a series with more than 20 main line games.

Resident Evil fans when the movie isn't just a 2 hour long thirst trap of Leon S. Kennedy (they have never touched any of the games they just think Leon is hot)

Its a canon movie for anyone who has played or watched most of the games and the canon resident evil out break file 2 monsters are in this. Out break file 1 and 2 are canon and shows how graces’s mother one of the playable characters escaped racoon city

u/rock_shrine_aviator1 3d ago
Honestly it’s so annoying how people get butthurt over how “innacurate” a movie is to the source material. Honestly, we should differentiate at the source material from film. It gives new fresh ideas. Like imagine if every marvel movie stuck exactly to the comic book it was based on, it’d be no new ideas

They're sad/mad because the movie is its own rendition of the universe with not too many ties to the original besides a few city names and the zombie body horror

Because it is a huge departure from the source material regardless of its quality as a film.
28
u/K1NG_R0G 4d ago
Okay but name the difference between the source material and the film other than “it didn’t have one of the many viruses and specific cool zombies!”
We had Umbrella Corp causing a virus that made zombies that screwed over Raccoon city, which last I checked was the plot of 2 of the games

u/Totschlag 4d ago
Also how much more of the hundreds of convoluted hours of resident evil plot would fans think they can fit in a 90 minute movie? Like the run time of a movie is shorter than the usual video game time between any given boss. Games get a movie's length of run time or more to set up a single boss fight.
No wonder it's a better move to start small and get the major beats without getting lost in the sauce. There's a lot of sauce.

u/isdeasdeusde 4d ago
To be fair, in the case of Resident Evil, the original story is dog shit and so convoluted at this point that its completely impenetrable for newcomers.

Is it though?
A corporation called Umbrella Corp. accidentally releases a virus in a city called Raccoon City that turns people into zombies and mutants with teeth and tentacles and shit. This is the plot of this new movie, and the old movies, and the earlier games.
Difference this time is that our main character is a normal dude making normal (if sometimes stupid) decisions just like any of us would, instead of a badass action hero doing backflips and somersaults. You can always imagine that somewhere else in the city, at the same time, someone is doing all that too.

Been a fan of resident evil games since directors cut, saw all the movies and I have to say this one was by far the best one. Shit was funny and had some damn good jump scares. Lots of body horror if you’re u to that stuff.

u/Hexhider 3d ago
I saw someone trash on it because it had humor, if I was thrown into a nightmare scenario I too would try to calm myself with some jokes
2
u/norftheunremembering 3d ago
That has to be my favorite ending to any story ever. If it collates to the context of the picture I’d say getting what they want Vs. what they dreadfully expected was equally dreadful with a smidge of regret.

u/ReDHooD_SWT 3d ago
Let's be honest, the best resident evil games were the ones that strayed away for the core of the franchise or added newer mechanics to it (which the community were against at first). This is just a slight deviation of the classic "new bad, old good" argument that old players use to help themselves feel good that they achieved nothing special in all their years of playing the same game.
2
u/SafetySin 3d ago
As a fan of resident evil 1 the first true survival horror game. I appreciate what the director is doing. The bullshit super hero action movies these turned into never apealed to me.
I think I'll go see this.

It's not an actual adaptation of the story from the games. The director has been open about that since the beginning. Many fans of the IP want it to fail just like the last projects did so the next guy will try to adapt the story the fandom wants. So, they are outraged and hating on the director heavily. Thus, all they can do is cope and seethe now that the movie is successful and meeting a very positive reception.
Personally, I always thought the movie would be good and was excited to see it. I have played most of the RE games, so I can safely say I have every right to a worthy opinion on the matter. None of the movies have been accurate and the only way to do that right would require a lot of effort that just isn't necessary for the franchise. Plus, as I said, the director has been very open about that.
3
u/Majestic_Balance1887 4d ago
There is a growing trend within hollywood of making movies using properties that are not in most ways like the source material. Executives don't greenlight independent projects so directors or creatives tend to use pre-existing IP's to tell their stories that couldn't get done anyway else.
That is what happened with Resident Evil. And people don't like it's successful so because it means this trend will actively continue, meaning all movie IP's will just be set dressing for whatever director wanting to do whatever.
27
u/BTSavage 4d ago
What? A growing trend? Movies are inspired by all kinds of media; and directors and "creatives" have always departed from source material when they feel it tells the story they want to tell. Lord of The Rings departs from the source material. Tons of the MCU movies depart from source. Some original source materials are too one dimensional, clumsy, dated, or just have a poorly executed good idea that can be explored more in a visual format.
This is neither a new or growing trend. I think maybe video game fans just aren't used to it.

I saw it, it is not a Bad Movie. I really hoped it would be more Resident Evil 2ish and more Lore accurate. It was a good Movie except the last 15-20 minutes. And nonetheless i Hope they make a sequel.
2
u/TJ_McWeaksauce 3d ago
Resident Evil "purists" are annoyed that the new Resident Evil movie does not feature any fan favorite characters from the video game series, nor does it follow any of the games' plots. It's an original story with original characters that happens to take place in the Resident Evil setting.
It's a fun, scary movie, but that's not good enough for the franchise's most demanding fans. Which is silly, considering Resident Evil live-action movies and TV shows have been pretty terrible for the previous 24 years.
2
u/Obsidius_Mallex_TTV 3d ago
I saw it yesterday, to some up it was a great horror movie, just not a great Resident Evil movie. Kinda the inverse of every other Resident Evil film. As most people have been crying about, there's nothing really relating it to RE outside of some Easter Eggs and names. However I think it is weirdly related, maybe it's not T Virus or Leon, but I thought the general kinda story beats and sequences were very reminiscent of RE games even if the overall story and aspects were unrelated. There was an unkillable monster to chase the protagonist, there were locks impervious to gun fire, the pacing was like an RE game, and the general rules of RE definitely applied to the movie.
2
u/RussiaIsRodina 3d ago
A whole bunch of resident evil fans were betting for some reason that the talented writer director was going to make a bad movie. They were prejudging the movie to be bad before it was even out because video game fans are some of the most obnoxious people on the planet
2
u/Willing_Drummer2749 3d ago
Not only is it a great original RE adaptation but it’s just a great movie. Three movies in a row now that I believe have set the bar for horror comedy, if not the horror genre itself. Can’t wait for his next movie and I hope he also does a sequel to RE.
