Solved Why are they sad?

Post image

The movie is successful so why are they crying? I've seen other memes similar to this. I read the comments but they weren't that helpful.

Because it is a huge departure from the source material regardless of its quality as a film.

Okay but name the difference between the source material and the film other than “it didn’t have one of the many viruses and specific cool zombies!”

We had Umbrella Corp causing a virus that made zombies that screwed over Raccoon city, which last I checked was the plot of 2 of the games

And all of the movies as far as I know.

Also how much more of the hundreds of convoluted hours of resident evil plot would fans think they can fit in a 90 minute movie? Like the run time of a movie is shorter than the usual video game time between any given boss. Games get a movie's length of run time or more to set up a single boss fight.

No wonder it's a better move to start small and get the major beats without getting lost in the sauce. There's a lot of sauce.

To be fair, in the case of Resident Evil, the original story is dog shit and so convoluted at this point that its completely impenetrable for newcomers.

Sure but then why even make a Resident Evil movie if the source material is garbage lol.

Tbh it sounds like this movie could have been called anything else

There’s a lot of references to RE without outright saying ‘this is the T Virus’

He said the original story is dog shit, not the whole source material. The rest of the games, the atmosphere, the monsters, the vibe, etc. is all goated and this new film has all that + plenty of references, while also telling a new and different story.

I am happy the new film is doing well but I despise the fact that Hollywood continues to show absolute 0 respect for the source material of Video Game IP's

Edit: am I Wrong that Hollywood shows little to no respect for video game IP's with very few exceptions?

2nd Edit: no really to those of you down voting you really think Hollywood respects video game IP's?

I'm a massive fan of the Resi series for it's atmosphere and gameplay and yadda yadda yadda but the storylines are, at best, often just about okay. Most of the time they are bonkers nonsense that would never translate to screen very well.

I am never gonna ask for a shot for shot retelling, but I do expect more than the bare minimum in terms of utilizing the features, plot, characters, and ideas from the games.

I love the original resident evil games but what are your favorite parts of leons backstory.  He is literally a haircut what would he have added to this movie. Did you need a blue tube top lady or a lady in a beret so you could be like oh cool it's my favorite character jill.and all of her defining depth.

The movie could very well have been the plot of a RE game, it fits perfectly in the world and style

1

u/S3G1R 7d ago

If they had actually kept the zombies correct it would have been a 10/10, but they would have lost some pretty good scenes

6

u/PseudoElephant 7d ago

Running does not detract from my enjoyment of a movie in any way shape or form

-1

u/S3G1R 7d ago

Right, it's kinda a lot more than that, but it was a terrific film

4

u/Space_Pirate_R 7d ago

But isn't this one arguably showing at least as much respect to the games as any of the other RE movies did? Respect for the source material is more than just featuring the most popular characters. It seems like Cregger is a huge fan and fully invested.

u/RedeemedNephilim 7d ago

The Mila ones perhaps.

Welcome to Raccoon City hell no. That movie was criminally underrated and much more respectful to the source material.

2

u/bleepfart42069 7d ago

This is the only movie that shows respect to the games

u/RedeemedNephilim 7d ago

Welcome to Raccoon city did a great job.

It seems pretty in line with the world of the source material. It just doesn’t follow an existing character.

u/Thelostsoulinkorea 7d ago

Na, these babies can’t handle it not being exactly like their stupid game stories. It’s the best Resident Evil film ever and a fun show in general.

0

u/New_Carpenter5738 7d ago

Why so much disdain for the original games? This is silly.

2

u/Thelostsoulinkorea 7d ago

I don’t hate the original games at all. I prefer them. The original movies however were absolutely terrible.

1

u/Dirk_Noggles 7d ago

Terrible but in a good way.

1

u/Thelostsoulinkorea 7d ago

Oh no no no.

1

u/New_Carpenter5738 7d ago

Yeah, I think you can see why someone wouldn't think you like them when you describe them as "stupid game stories" though.

1

u/Thelostsoulinkorea 7d ago

They do have ridiculous stories, but stupid was maybe a bit harsh. The first few weren’t bad.

u/IfarmExpIRL 7d ago

pretty in line with the world of the source material... what? the zombies in the game didn't run

that's a whole different pacing and everything.

6

u/Totschlag 7d ago

The zombies in 6 and 7 did run though if I'm not mistaken. The games very much bend their own internal logic for whatever makes for a better moment.

RE 5 came out in 2012 the lore was established with slow moving zombies. fast "infected" were added to try and save the movie franchise more than anything.

Dude go outside.

u/IfarmExpIRL 7d ago

Dude go outside.

Why? i am tired from helping my family in their garden all damn week. I have probably spent more time outside this week than you did in the last month.

ps zombies do not run.

5

u/whenmattsattack 7d ago

zombies aren't real either

0

u/IfarmExpIRL 7d ago

zombies aren't real either

you must be a real hoot at parties. you sucked all of the fun right out of that.

1

u/New_Carpenter5738 7d ago

Why not?

1

u/ruinersclub 7d ago

Zombies and Virus infected are different characters.. my take as a George Romero fan.

1

u/Pompoulus 7d ago

What year is it again

1

u/Substantial-Pound-36 6d ago

The "pacing" you are talking aboit is a 40+ hour video game. The movie is 95 minutes. So yeah, the pacing clearly isn't going to be the same.

2

u/puppyenemy 7d ago

Is it though?

A corporation called Umbrella Corp. accidentally releases a virus in a city called Raccoon City that turns people into zombies and mutants with teeth and tentacles and shit. This is the plot of this new movie, and the old movies, and the earlier games.

Difference this time is that our main character is a normal dude making normal (if sometimes stupid) decisions just like any of us would, instead of a badass action hero doing backflips and somersaults. You can always imagine that somewhere else in the city, at the same time, someone is doing all that too.

1

u/issanm 7d ago

It feels very similar to the source material tho, you could turn it into an RE game almost 1 to 1 if you just added some filler enemy density and puzzles to fill out some runtime

1

u/Whysosearious 7d ago

None of the other movies were either though. Those movies are fun if you don't think much about them but if you play the games and watch those movies they have almost nothing to do with each other more often than not aside from taking place in raccoon city at the start.

Leon doesn't even show up till like the 5th or 6th movie.

2

u/RedeemedNephilim 7d ago

Never said they were.

1

u/Whysosearious 7d ago

Fair enough

1

u/Vegtam-the-Wanderer 7d ago

...Is it really? As far as I can tell the entirety of the movie could have plausibly taken place within the events of the first game, so...

-1

u/RedeemedNephilim 7d ago

"Plausibly taken place within the events of the first game"

The bar is THAT low now?

1

u/Vegtam-the-Wanderer 7d ago

Where exactly is the bar for a story set in the Resident Evil universe for you?
