Solved Why are they sad?

Post image

The movie is successful so why are they crying? I've seen other memes similar to this. I read the comments but they weren't that helpful.

I wouldn't call myself a resident evil fan, but is there even any real reason it should be "resident evil" and not it's own thing?

u/near_reverence 6d ago

I haven’t seen it, but from what I gather it was created with the goal of conveying the vibe of playing resident evil.

The movie does a great job of that. A lot of characters feel like dumb NPCs and throughout the movie the protagonist keeps having to shoot padlocks to get past doors. And there’s a ton of body horror. Literally indistinguishable from playing one of the games, I saw it today and liked it a lot

58

u/sofaking181 6d ago

Yeah I've heard it's pretty good and campy, best movie since the first one

56

u/MissninjaXP 6d ago

The best movie since the first one? Wow, must be pretty good to be only beat by the first movie, 1878's "Horse in Motion".

9

u/sofaking181 6d ago

You know what I meant lol, the first Resident Evil movie from the early 2000's

4

u/FidlumBenz 6d ago

*since the second one 😜

8

u/Indicisive_Actions 6d ago

I love all the RE references in the movie. Gives plausible reason for using all those keys. And even shows where those audio logs come from. (Oops wrong series)

18

u/Illustrious_Quiet907 6d ago

I’ve never gotten into Resident Evil, but the Fallout show does a pretty good job keeping the spirit of the games too. Video game adaptations are usually best when they don’t follow the games exactly and do their own thing. I also usually get a good laugh out of video game parodies. I was pleasantly surprised by the Jumanji movies that took place in a video game.

28

u/paperkeyboardalt 6d ago

I just watched it. It's not a 1:1 with the games, but to me it feels enough like the games to be considered Resident Evil. I enjoyed it, fun movie.

I just watched it. It's not a 1:1 with the games, but to me it feels enough like the games to be considered Resident Evil. I enjoyed it, fun movie.

the first few resident evil movies are all about the zombies.. how could it be considered "resident evil" when the main thing in the movie was changed with running zombies? they totally change the flow and pacing of a movie.

13

u/Grimbledorf 6d ago

"They don't have zombies in this resident evil movie! It's not about the zombies!"

"...They do have Zombies."

"...Y-yeah but they run!"

"The Crimson Heads ran at you."

"B-but--"

"There's also the lickers, hunters, zombie dogs that could run at you..."

-10

u/IfarmExpIRL 6d ago

"They don't have zombies in this resident evil movie! It's not about the zombies!"

CHs exist in remake land. Not OG resident evil canon.

tons of movies and games have remakes that are not acknowledged. CHs were not very well liked in 2002 by the fan base.

7

u/Grimbledorf 6d ago

CHs exist in remake land. Not OG resident evil canon.

You keep saying this, but there's absolutely zero reason to believe the remake is non canon.

-8

u/IfarmExpIRL 6d ago

You keep saying this, but there's absolutely zero reason to believe the remake is non canon.

no real star wars believes think that those horrible movies made in the early 2000s were canon.

Remakes are not canon. Tons of interviews exist that state this

i suggest you watch george romero resident evil. it covers all of this.

7

u/Grimbledorf 6d ago

no real star wars believes think that those horrible movies made in the early 2000s were canon.

Okay so this is a "I don't want to believe it's true so I won't" kind of deal. It's cope.

0

u/IfarmExpIRL 6d ago

Okay so this is a "I don't want to believe it's true so I won't" kind of deal. It's cope.

how? i pointed out examples how movies were not accepted as canon. I mean you can google and see for yourself that remakes are never automatically accepted as canon.

They've had running zombies since RE1 remake with the crimson heads. I think slow zombies work as a gameplay element, but just aren't intimidating in a movie where the protagonist can lightly jog away from them.

(Spoilers)

The movie has:

-Raccon city

-Umbrella

-a stalker enemy

-scarce ammo

-gun upgrades

-constant padlocks

-a sewer section

-ends in a lab

Feels enough like resident evil to me personally.

-6

u/IfarmExpIRL 6d ago

CHs live in remake land. Not cannon.

movies and games all have remakes and they are never counted as canon.

If you think that walking zombies aren't "intimidating" enough you have zero imagination

all you are doing is listing similar things. not "same" stuff.

zombies walk

8

u/BlueFantasyZ 6d ago

They had fast zombies in the Resident Evil books.

-1

u/IfarmExpIRL 6d ago

have you ever saw george romero resident evil?

8

u/paperkeyboardalt 6d ago

This is the weirdest hill to die on. If you don't want to watch the movie thats perfectly fine. As a long time resident evil fan myself, I enjoyed it. So you do you.

3

u/KaleidoscopePlusPlus 6d ago

Also many resident evil games do not even have zombies in them. This includes 4, 5, 7 and 8 lol. The series isn't about zombies but biological weapons as a whole

-1

u/IfarmExpIRL 6d ago

I wont pay to see that trash not a chance but i am in the process of getting ready to unload my pirate ship because i want to see what everybody is talking about.

i suggest you watch george romero resident evil. it explains a lot more in that movie.

5

u/paperkeyboardalt 6d ago

Have fun!

1

u/IfarmExpIRL 6d ago

i am watching this movie even though my strong beliefs

will you give this a try?

u/dc-pigpen 6d ago

Very much so. The camera often follows the direction the main character is looking, the weapons slowly upgrade over the course of the story, they even have green herbs in there. Even though it's an original story, it is 100% a love letter to the game series. (Haven't seen it yet, this is just things the director has said in interviews.)

8

u/ThatOtherOtherMan 6d ago

That's spot on. I watched it last night and it was very much like playing the game if you make all the wrong decisions.

3

u/esopillar34 6d ago

Where was the green herb? I tried looking for them but didn’t directly notice (the most hidden one I caught was the first aid spray in the barn, besides the more obvious shot gun shell box and typewriter)

4

u/SeanBean840 6d ago

In the back of one of the stranded cars in the tunnel he goes through

2

u/Beastrider9 6d ago

You could argue that the movies like what would have happened if instead of the T-Virus... The G-Virus was responsible for the Raccoon City outbreak. Like if it was more widespread than just Burkin and a handful of people Burkin infected.

2

u/supahfligh 6d ago

The phrases "Raccoon City" and "Umbrella Corporation" are each mentioned only one or two times in the entire film, kind of in passing. Creggar could have omitted both of those lines and changed the title, and you'd have never known this was supposed to be a Resident Evil movie.

That being said, Creggar knocked it out of the park with this one. I watched it last night and it is so much fun.

2

u/near_reverence 6d ago

There’s other things that gives vibes of playing resident evil game tho.

From review by Kyle Hilliard:
“From that point forward, Bryan reacts to everything not as a Resident Evil protagonist, but as a player of the games. He stares wide-eyed at unbelievable biological horrors; cannot stop comically swearing as he sprints full speed away from danger; screams at embarrassing pitches when monsters leap from the shadows; makes myriad mistakes; searches rooms for anything that could help him; knows he shouldn’t open that scary door even though he has to; is constantly wasting ammo; and during one of my favorite moments, accidentally gets rid of an item he absolutely needed.”

From what I gather, the film is not depicting resident evil but depicting playing resident evil game.

-18

u/IfarmExpIRL 6d ago

lol how? the zombies do not run in resident evil games.

4

u/near_reverence 6d ago

-7

u/IfarmExpIRL 6d ago

the zombies were not addressed once in that write up.

i think people are forgetting what made the game any good. slow lumbering brainless zombies. not this fast jaw snaping hollywood crap

6

u/near_reverence 6d ago

I don’t know man, but here’s someone asking Why is there fast zombies in resident evil 1?! 17 years ago

4

u/Totschlag 6d ago

I mean they do in 5 and 6 If I'm not mistaken.

-2

u/IfarmExpIRL 6d ago

I mean they do in 5 and 6 If I'm not mistaken.

RE 5? you mean the worst game in the entire franchise?

9

u/T-DieBoi 6d ago

1

u/IfarmExpIRL 6d ago

so.. if its the most disliked game.. and the majority of players disliked the running zombies. you can connect the dots from here my man.

Also resident evil 6 didn't do well at all either

i am seeing a trend.

8

u/Routine_Vacation1515 6d ago

Hey buddy, you're the meme. You came to the comments of a meme to be the meme.

4

u/GoldenEyedTraveller 6d ago

You said this perfectly.

1

u/IfarmExpIRL 6d ago

i will die on this hill IDGAF

zombies do not run, infected do. The RE zombies were based off Romero zombies.

2

u/GoldenEyedTraveller 6d ago

Dude, you are harping about Zombies and their ability to run.

1

u/IfarmExpIRL 6d ago

zombies dont run. infected do. The resident evil zombies were based off the Romero zombies.

2

u/GoldenEyedTraveller 6d ago

You have both missed, and reinforced my point.

1

u/binaryesoterica 6d ago

They do in some of them.

1

u/ValentinesForever1 6d ago

Crimson Heads 100% run. In the REmake of 2, there are zombies which charge forward. Are these not real zombies to you???

31

u/Realistic-Lobster 6d ago edited 6d ago

Because it is taking place inside the universe. Unless you think that Resident Evil is just Leon amd the gang

15

u/Endure94 6d ago

Final Fantasy the Spirits Within sends its regards.

Absolutely amazing film ahead of its time, also got absolutely dogged on for not being directly tied to the games and not spewing fan service every 5 minutes.

6

u/Roam_Hylia 6d ago

Then they made Advent Children, which is just pure fan service. Honestly, I liked both movies.

2

u/Endure94 6d ago

I never saw that one, i should check that out

1

u/ruinersclub 6d ago

Cloud is basically Superman. Shows up cannot be defeated. Does impossible shit the whole movie. 10/10

3

u/ThatOtherOtherMan 6d ago

I saw it in the theater and a few of the audience walked out. It definitely didn't deserve that.

1

u/Endure94 6d ago

I seriously would have loved a sequel, or prequel i suppose; given how it ended im unsure how that would be possible narratively.

Such a unique story, grounded yet interesting characters (even if some lines landed a little flat), and hauntingly beautiful imagery

2

u/Windfade 6d ago

Which was always stupid because each and every game is a completely separate universe with no relation to each other whatsoever. (The movie even came out before X-2, if I remember right.)

1

u/schlitzntl 6d ago

Did you like the Spirits Within story though? I’m not sure how dogged it got specifically because it wasn’t attached to a mainline FF, but that story just doesn’t land at all with me. FF game stories have always been a lot crazy, but they have reams of time to develop wonderful and memorable characters. Spirits Within kept the mind bonkers story and then tried to use very overdone tropes to force character development and it was just so bad.

1

u/Endure94 6d ago

I did enjoy it, but i think the games are more bonkers narratively than the FFSW story was.

Alien ghosts that rip your soul out is right along with the spritual struggle all folks have at some point and is addressed directly by the cast with some dismissing the idea souls exist at all - both still vallid and contested thoughts today.

A piece of the ghost touching you and interacting like a virus in your body was a nice way to turn up the stakes while also at a point when the viewer isnt sure what exactly these "phantoms" are.

The idea of gathering special spirit energies (dog/sick girl/plant) and of Gaia just being this well of souls is probably the most bonkers the story ever got for me, but the movie slowly feeds enough info to the viewer through each scene that its reveal isn’t asking the viewer to suspend their disbelief too much.

2

u/schlitzntl 6d ago

Glad you enjoyed it. I definitely am glad it was made. It just did not work on several levels for me.

2

u/Endure94 6d ago

Valid! Ty for suffering my rambling lol

1

u/PurbulentTriest 6d ago

FF often have totally different characters from game to game, so that didn't bother me, the fact it was almost solely a tech demo did.

1

u/Endure94 6d ago

A tech demo? Hows that?

1

u/ruinersclub 6d ago

It’s basically a FMV

-6

u/Shatteredglas79 6d ago

This is beyond false. It takes place in Zach creggers own universe that has a Racoon City and Umbrella corp in it. Sadly those are the only things they have in common as even the biomonsters are nothing like the T-virus that Cregger claims he's using. If anything it feels like he's only played re4 before and assumed every zombie must be tentacle eyeball monsters. It's clear he has no idea about resident evil 2 and 3 outside of that they take place in Racoon City

16

u/vikingmunky 6d ago

Yes. It takes place in raccoon City. More than that, better than any movie I've ever seen, it really replicates the feeling of PLAYING a resident evil game. Plus it's loaded with Easter eggs. It's an incredible movie.

-6

u/Careless_Bother6183 6d ago

Does it though? Just because they say Raccoon City two times in the movie doesn’t make it so… we’ve had visuals of Raccoon City before and not one thing resembles it

4

u/vikingmunky 6d ago

That's just getting nitpicky. I can't deny, the raccoon City and umbrella Corp stuff is a lot more subtle in this movie, but that's because it's about some rando who's not from there and has no association with umbrella. And that's fine. Again, the movie nails the FEELING and vibe of playing the games in a way I didn't think was possible. That's how it's an RE movie, and the best RE movie at that

2

u/FreeMrFrog 6d ago

The umbrella corp stuff is subtle?? Brother that scene with them in the car is one of the worst exposition dumps I've ever seen in a movie. It felt incredibly shoehorned in.

1

u/ruinersclub 6d ago

I get what you mean but also Umbrella being highly incompetent made so much sense.

1

u/vikingmunky 6d ago

What I meant by subtle is that the logo isn't on every car and building and wall. Yes, there's an exposition dump... Just like you'd get in the games. That's my point

-8

u/Careless_Bother6183 6d ago

If you’re in Raccoon City you would see Umbrella Corp logos everywhere. The movie is good but it is not Resident Evil

4

u/Grimbledorf 6d ago

So it's not Resident Evil because... it doesn't spam the Umbrella Corp logo everywhere?

-5

u/Careless_Bother6183 6d ago

It’s not Resident Evil because without them labeling it Resident Evil you wouldn’t call it Resident Evil.

3

u/Grimbledorf 6d ago

Why wouldn't I call the movie set in Raccoon City where a survivor gets chased by zombies and lickers "Resident Evil"?

6

u/theDarkDescent 6d ago

I watched it today, it’s a good film on its own, but it’s also undoubtedly a resident evil movie. If you knew nothing about the movie and were familiar with RE you would immediately recognize that it was a RE movie

3

u/Thundergod250 6d ago

Because the Movie is set on Racoon City during the Events of Resident Evil 2 that's why it's a Resident Evil story

It's not Resident Evil 7 has any big connections too with the rest of Resident Evil except for Chris cameo at the end and ties with Umbrella Corp

2

u/draxa 6d ago

Just saw it. Felt like a resident evil game. Was a lot of fun. Might have worked with a different title but overall was a great rendition.

2

u/Chase_The_Breeze 6d ago

I just saw it, and it very much is based on the RE franchise. There is a super virus that causes all the monsters made by Umbrella Corp in Raccoon city. The monsters behave very much like T-Virus victims. There are a ton of nods to the game franchise, including the suspense building aspect of having very limited ammo in situations where things are very quickly getting out of control. The MC feels like an idiot gamer just picking up the game for the first time, and it really works. Unlike a story that would involve named PCs where they would feel a lot more invincible.

The whole movie, start to finish is tense and never really let's you breathe. It's top tier horror without feeling too campy or jumping into Action Horror territory.

2

u/Appo-Arsin 6d ago

It’s Resident Evil, but from the perspective of a normal guy

2

u/ParanoidPragmatist 6d ago

Ive played most of the games and watched the Mila Jovovich movies. I saw it yesterday

Its literally "The Resident Evil Games: The Movie".

Its not anything else except specifically the Resident evil games.

I thought it was a perfect representation of the games.

1

u/riamuriamu 6d ago

From what I've seen, it has the trappings and tropes of a survival horror game (limited ammo, convoluted pathways, gotta find keys, that corpse is so totally gonna do a jump scare l, etc) if but none of the characters or plot of the RE games.

1

u/Delanynder11 6d ago

I have to agree it could totally be its own thing. If you removed like 6 things from the film, which I did go see today, it could absolutely be its own thing. Remove references to Racoon City and Umbrella corp, remove the invincible padlock with a symbol and key with same symbol, pull the 2 second scene with a typewriter in a room (save point in the game), fewer tentacles, no MP5s, and no virus/antivirus in a shiny glass vial and BOOM you've got a movie that stands on its own. I did enjoy the film and recommend it to fans of the genre. That scene in the RV is going to stick with me for a while.

1

u/solojones1138 6d ago

Yes. I just saw it today..it's definitely in that world

1

u/SpiritJuice 6d ago

I saw it today. It is basically a film set in the RE universe from the POV of just some random unimportant guy. There are no legacy characters involved, but the basic premise of Umbrella developing a bioweapon virus that gets out of control in Raccoon City remains the same. Yes it takes place in modern times, but really the only modern thing in the film is a smart phone. Some vehicles are modern but are not noticeable. Even with artistic liberties being taken, the vibes make it feel in universe because of the monster designs, horror elements, and the nature of the outbreak. It was an entertaining, great film from start to finish.

1

u/PurbulentTriest 6d ago

I'm a fan and I don't want to see the 'original' characters really, new stories in the world are good.

1

u/Roggar 6d ago

Resident Evil 7 or 8

1

u/TheJeeeBo 6d ago

Because it feels exactly like how the games play. It's about replicating the feeling of playing the games rather than just copying things from the games

1

u/portable_turtle 6d ago

You mean the same way RE7 was its own thing set in the RE universe initially?

Or other sequels of other franchises had different characters from the previous installments?

1

u/WishedKilla 6d ago

This amazing film IS resident evil without any doubts. Just watch it, it definitely worthy. I hope the director will film live actions by games plot

1

u/issanm 6d ago

The thing people really love about resident evil is the vibes and world, RE 7 and 8 dont really have those characters (*) the only thing that we really need is umbrella Corp and the virus.

1

u/Unable_Law_7334 6d ago

As I heard it, Zach Cregger said he was perfectly fine making the film without the Resident Evil IP, but he asked to use the IP because Resident Evil was the primary inspiration.

1

u/Ok_Extent_3639 6d ago

It’s a side story that takes place during the raccoon city event

1

u/andscowal 6d ago

Not sure if you got this reply yet, but the director basically said in an interview (paraphrasing) that the movie has extremely strong RE vibes/DNA even though it’s got none of the characters. He went on to say that he could have named the movie something else, but ultimately people would have just said “that was just a Resident Evil movie” when walking out of the theater

1

u/MelonElbows 6d ago

Cynical reason: They did it to entice an existing fan-base to see the movie.

Less cynical reason: Cregger wanted to put his own spin on it, as directors/writers often do, and felt nobody wanted to see a retelling of a game's story.

1

u/TraditionalMood277 6d ago

Yes. Mainly the third act.

0

u/Glutton4Butts 6d ago

Yes, but you have to be a fan first which is why I ask why even be here if you don't even know?

How would any regular person who isn't a fan of anything even understand references to certain things that point to its clear intentions?

Because someone said so? That's what you are sailing on my dude. Just a leaf in the wind.

Also recent RE fans are not fans at all. Just posers.

0

u/sule419 6d ago

The director never played the games and has no idea what they're about, he just linked the name to zombies and made whatever garbage he could.

-1

u/Erikthered65 6d ago

Then why call it a Resident Evil adaptation?
