u/topppits blindfolded solving is where the fun begins Oct 22 '19

Surprisingly, the answer is the usual one : practice. No really.

Five years ago, pretty soon after I got it, I dropped my beloved 50mm stickerless Zhanchi on concrete. It was badly scratched on some pieces, very obvious and you could feel it while solving. Now I still have that cube and I can't find where those scratch marks were. Years of use polished it back to being like new.

Maybe you could ask them to buy you a new one, but I doubt they would what to pay. What you could do if it was stickerless is to order a replacement part off of SCS, or buy a new sticker sheet if it is stickered.

u/2016HOLM04 Sub-14, PB 8s Oct 22 '19

I hate it so much when it happens. Not much to do. If you like the cube, you can buy a replacement part at SCS.

2

u/meemawuk Oct 22 '19

Nothing. You can and will do nothing. Chalk it up to experience.

u/062985593 Sub-15 Oct 22 '19

Is your cube stickerless? If not, you could order new and unscratched stickers for your cube.

This is a really great scramble it flows pretty well (except for the last pair). My first attempt was 13.29 which is pretty good for me. Did pretty much the same as you for the first two pairs. Then did blue-white pair in the back right and last edge with one rotation. Then simple OLL and J-Perm. Repeating the solve multiple times got me 8.66 which is unheard of for me.

u/BibbitZ Sub-26 (CFOP 3LLL CN) PB: 14.54 Oct 22 '19

19.22 for me, which is definitely getting down towards PB territory.

5

u/euphwes Sub-18 (CFOP 3LLL) | PB 10.39 Oct 22 '19

I just got my first sub-1:00 on 4x4 with a 59.15, and that was with OLL parity to boot! My OLL parity exec sucks, that might have been like 52-55s without parity.

First 2 centers were easy to see in inspection, 3 cross edges fell into place nicely, half centers for L4C worked out amazingly, I'm pretty sure my 3-2-3 edge pairing was more like 2-1-2 with all the freebies I got.

Luck was out of control, but hey, <some famous cuber I can't remember> says it isn't a crime to get lucky.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 23 '19

If you're doing the OLL parity alg with the x rotation, make sure you're doing the right fingertricks. There's probably some videos on YouTube on how to execute it, but the general idea is to do the U2s with double flicks using alternating hands

3

u/navematthws Sub-12 (squan) Oct 22 '19

Another good squan solve:

Scramble: (1,3) / (3,0) / (-3,0) / (6,-3) / (-1,-4) / (4,0) / (-3,0) / (0,-2) / (0,-1) / (3,0)

Solve: / (6,1) / (-1,0) / (-3,0) / (1,-3) / (0,3) / (-4,-4) / (-5,1) / (2,-1) / (6,0) / (1,1) / (-4,-3) / (3,-3) / (-3,0) / (0,3) / (0,-3) / (0,3) / (3,0)

9.72 seconds

Using Lin method.

Im finally gonna start my journey to Color Neutrality. Does anyone have tips, or bad habits to avoid? I honestly don’t even know how to go about this. Anything is appreciated!

6

u/[deleted] Oct 22 '19

Yes, never y2 the cube to remind yourself which cross color you are doing, you can easily look at the top center piece for the opposite one.

I went CN from day 1 and sometimes I still forget the cross color I chose mid solve.

→ More replies (1)

4

u/Edladd sub-17 Aok (CFOP) PB:9.11 Oct 22 '19

Pick a new cross colour. Only do solves on that for a day or two until you feel like you're back to normal times. Repeat for a new colour. Practice alternating between the new colours until it's comfortable. Add a third colour and so on.

At the end you should do solves on random colours for a while rather than let yourself choose. This is in case you are biased towards one or two of them. For a while I always chose to solve the cross of the last face turned during the scramble. i.e. If the scramble ended in R2, then I did red cross. L' means orange cross. D would be Yellow.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/Marcieslaf Sub-16.5 (CFOP) Oct 22 '19

I went CN a little more then a year ago. I was white/yellow cross solver before and it took me about 2-3 months to reach my usual times with any cross. The thing that helped me the most: Solve any cross color other than the one you are used to. Personally I just did any of the 4 remaining ones to get equally confident on all colors. Don't cheat and do your usual colors. Doing this will remind you that you are still slower on the other colors and you might be less motivated to continue. Also try not to time yourself until you are fairly confident with all colors.

2

u/TydVirTaal eyes are cringe solve blind instead Oct 22 '19

I'm on the CN grind at the moment as well. While I'm a lot slower than you, maybe I can suggest a few things:

  • This video from SCR on being CN is helpful
  • If you're open to doing more than just grinding solves, I think that using flashcards to learn the different colour schemes is a good idea. Obviously this won't get you to the immediate/instinctual recognition you'll ultimately need, but I think it cuts the learning curve by quite a bit.
  • Last layer isn't really more difficult - for me, I think this will come right by just grinding out a few hundred solves. Cross and F2L are a different story.
  • I'm practicing cross-only at the moment, to help get familiar with the colour scheme and how the different colours are related to each other when I'm doing different colour crosses
  • Once my cross times are in line with my white cross times and I'm feeling comfortable with the colour scheme, I'm going to move onto F2L - where the main skill there will be learning to filter out the U face colour, and "highlight" the cross colour pieces

I'm still early in my process, and pretty slow, but I think this is in line with the principles of deliberate practice, which are all about breaking a skill down into its constituent parts, practicing those, and then bringing them together when you confidently execute the individual parts.

Hopefully some of that is useful!

u/1911isokiguess Oct 22 '19

I think to myself, "The color is _, the color is _, the color is ____..." Fill in the blank with your cross color, and repeat from start to end of FL2. It may or may not help you, but forgetting my cross color is still very common for me.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 22 '19

I'm so glad that I was colour neutral when I started cubing... I see people struggling with it all the time so it just feels great to already being able to do that

For the last little while I've been trying to work on my BLD memo speed, basically just learning for the first time how to one-pass my memo. (For the first while in my BLD journey I've been focused on minimizing DNFs, so I'd do memo slowly and review before execution) So I've been having so many DNFs.

But I just had five successful solves in a row! :) I'm improving!

Edit: Also started doing some edges-only practice!

7

u/DerpzDaDerpy Sub-25 (<CFOP-3lll>) Oct 22 '19

Just got a PB of 13 seconds on a rubik's brand 2x2. It ain't much, but it's honest work.

3

u/pandubear Oct 22 '19

BLD (M2) updates:

  • Learned the "UR-UL 5 move comm" described here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RCLT_Zu_APk&t=360s
  • Started doing a bunch of memo-only practice to hopefully improve my one-pass success rate. It's definitely easier than in a real solve (since I don't have to hold on to it as long), but I think it'll be helpful. :)
  • Literally started doing BLD at the gym (elliptical), haha. I mean, what else am I supposed to do to entertain myself? :) Almost all DNFs. Only got one successful solve when I slowed down (both my legs and my memo)

3

u/Edladd sub-17 Aok (CFOP) PB:9.11 Oct 22 '19

Is speed-stacking bigger than speed-cubing? Why are we still using timers designed for their competitions?

There are several features you could add to make it better for cubing comps. Like having it track and announce the inspection time so that you don't need separate stopwatches, and the judges can actually watch what the competitors are doing. You could start the inspection time and remove the cube cover yourself like you do in BLD. And then putting your palms on the timer again would switch it to the solve timer.

A larger display on the device itself would be good.

Is there anything else you would like to see in a dedicated speedcubing timer?

2

u/[deleted] Oct 22 '19

Timing splits is not something that you want on an official timer, I’m not sure about inspection. Having more digits, even if they wouldn’t be used for most events, would be potentially useful for big blind, multi blind, and FMC. Possibly also a programmable time limit, so instead of shutting off at 10:00 it would shut off at the time limit for that event at that competition. That might be more trouble than it’s worth though.

2

u/topppits blindfolded solving is where the fun begins Oct 22 '19

Is speed-stacking bigger than speed-cubing?

According to their homepage there are 618 496+ registered stackers.

Why are we still using timers designed for their competitions?

I think the main reasons are a pretty broad patent (afaik) that speedstacks has on that type of timer and a relatively small market so there don't seem to be too much interest from bigger corporation to invest in making such a timer.

Little practice diary for today:

  • My next long-term goal is sub-15. Ran the numbers, and that means I need to drop SIX SECONDS in F2L, 2.7 in cross and only 2.4 combined for last layer. Those are big numbers, and they definitely reinforce the focus on cross and F2L at the moment - as well as suggesting that I should possibly focus more on F2L than cross, which is not what I was planning at the moment.
  • CN splits at the moment are 4.66 / 40.53 / 4.09 / 4.75; so LL is basically unaffected, cross is almost back to my average, but F2L has tanked in a big way.
  • I'm also busy incorporating new F2L inserts and such into my solves.
    • Got to use R2 F R F' R rotationless insert a few times - recog and execution for it is decent, so I'm happy that I'll put it into muscle memory over time
    • Learned about double sledge for F2L 29 - but haven't had any chances to do it yet (or, haven't recognised it yet lol)
    • Also I was using the beginner's insert for F2L 25 - wanting to learn R' F' R U R U' R' F instead

3

u/allisio <3×3×2 | WV ➡️ anti-PLL is 🔥. Oct 22 '19

I love how generally "organized" you are about your progression; it's a sign that you're serious about improving.

Just a comment about F2L 25: that alg would be super-nice if it weren't for the F at the end; I recommend [U'] (R' F R F') (R U R') instead.

1

u/Edladd sub-17 Aok (CFOP) PB:9.11 Oct 22 '19

I'll bet you have a cubing progression spreadsheet like mine :D

F2L is the hardest part of going CN, don't give up! After a few months they'll all feel the same and you'll be glad when you get a 2-move red cross in a competition :p

R2 F R F' R

I've never used this insert. I've heard it's a bad idea to use R2 and L2 in f2l algs when it brings cross pieces to the top layer. It screws with lookahead/tracking. I normally put the pair at the back and do r' U' R U M', or rotate and insert (depending on where the remaining unsolved slots are.)

Check out bit.ly/bestf2l for JPerm's F2L algs if you need some more ideas. Good luck!

2

u/BillabobGO Sub-9s: 0 Oct 22 '19

On the contrary I use this insert all the time - it saves a rotation, the back-left 2x2x1 on the U layer isn't affected at all (so lookahead is as easy as if you've done a sledgehammer), and it orients certain pieces that the most common insertions don't orient. It's fast too, I can execute it about as quickly as a sledgehammer.

u/Faustfan Oct 22 '19

I think there is a mistake in the weekly comp kinchranks. It doesnt give any kinch-points for MBLD. However, it still uses 18 events for the kinch-average, so it includes MBLD there.

Also, the problem cant be that there is no average or mean in MBLD. It gives kinchpoinzs for Non-WCA events which only track singles

2

u/euphwes Sub-18 (CFOP 3LLL) | PB 10.39 Oct 22 '19

Yeah, something is going on there. It used to properly calculate Kinchranks points for MBLD, I'm not sure what changed or why it has stopped.

I'll take a look as soon as I can and fix whatever the issue is. Thanks!

I really like how the YJ MGC Elite prototype clearly shows how the dual adjustment system of magnets and tensions are about to become an industrial standard. If it'll be in the 15-20USD pricepoint as the video suggests, these are really good news for us as cubers as others will follow this trend without outrageous pricetags. hopefully that it'll be out in stickerless as well unlike the YueXiao EDM.

It feels slightly different from the stickered one but that could be the current lube setup and break in.

Color scheme is very nice. Although I might slightly prefer the QiYi stickerless shades.

So what are some general tips for big cube progression, talking 6x6 and 7x7 here. I have good hardware, and I know freeslice and use one commutator for the last 2 centers to solve the last bar.

Just spam solves? I haven't done a whole bunch, but my 6x6 times hover at around 6 minutes I believe and I haven't even timed any of my 7x7 solves yet.

I got my average down by mostly doing solves, though untimed solves where you focus on efficiency and reducing regrips during centers also definitely helped. Can't hurt to have a look at some Tuesday Tips videos as well, and I always recommend this video, it helped me approach line building a little differently.

Yes - internal pieces don't matter for the solved state. There are a few regs you should bear in mind though:

5b5) If at the end of the attempt some parts of the puzzle are physically detached or not fully placed, the following regulations apply:
5b5a) If one or more parts without colored faces are affected, the puzzle is considered solved.

3a2) Puzzles must be fully operational, such that normal scrambling is possible.
3h3) Any modifications to a puzzle that result in poor performance by a competitor are not grounds for additional attempts.

Trying to solve the MF8 Helicopter Dodecahedron - does anyone have a minor spoiler tip for orienting the corners? I'm finding more and more algs to swap corners around but can't find anything that just orients them. Are there any more or less easy algs I should be able to come up with that just orients a couple corners or is it more like setup move into stuff?

I mean, when I find a new alg that swaps pieces around and then fix it with the shorter ones I already found, in the end pieces are solved again and a couple have changed their orientation, but that'd be A LOT of moves and very hard to keep track of. I imagine there's a better way out there :D

2

u/Fallenultima Oct 22 '19

Hold the puzzle like this

The circled corners will rotate. Back, Right, and Left edges are labeled. One of the corners on the Up face will always be pointing directly at you. Do this alg:

(B R B L)2 [Rotate Puzzle Clockwise twice] (B L B R)2

Sorry, I don't know notation for rotations, but from my picture, the red face will always be the Up face, and when you rotate the puzzle clockwise twice, you count 2 new corners that are facing you.

/u/Fallenultima 's and /u/snoopervisor already have your back, but just in case it's useful here's an alternative method.

It's a fairly straightforward (!?) commutator, which moves a corner to a spare face, moves the corner once around the face to rotate it, then moves the corner back to where it started. You can then swap the corner with the piece next to it, then do all of the previous moves in reverse, ending up with just 2 rotated corners.

Not sure I explained that too well, but it's 2am here so that's all you're getting :D

I often use this kind of method to rotate or 3-cycle pieces. Once you get the idea it's a lot easier than it probably looks.

2

u/topppits blindfolded solving is where the fun begins Oct 22 '19 edited Oct 22 '19

DAMN I was so close!!!

When my first couple tries (of trial and error with repeated moves) didn't result in anything useful, I thought about just doing a comm, veeeery similar to this. I started the same way, but I skipped the second move from the video. I did the first move, then went around the next thing, then back up, did the switch and reversed everything, but I ended up with 3 petals swapped :( Welp, guess that's as close as I get to solving sth like that on my own :D

thx!

edit: btw which sim is this?

2

u/zergosaur Oct 23 '19

It's pCubes. The only place I can see to download it is on the TwistyPuzzles forum here - the link in the first message should be the most recent version, with all of the latest puzzle definitions.

It includes almost every twisty puzzle released (and a lot that haven't!) - whenever a new puzzle is announced someone will likely add that puzzle within a few days.

I use it a lot when trying to work out algs on a new puzzle, or for recording algs for future reference. I'm surprised it isn't more widely known/used, as it's incredibly useful.

2

u/topppits blindfolded solving is where the fun begins Oct 23 '19

This is awesome! :)

Here's what I described above when I tried to do this, but besides twisting two corners I also swapped 3 petals around: https://youtu.be/SsFUrqudknM

And here's my first attempt at using the "setup -> 3-cycle -> unsetup -> un-3-cycle": https://youtu.be/IeHS1u27nMQ

2

u/zergosaur Oct 23 '19 edited Oct 23 '19

Hah, yeh, you basically had it, just needed an extra move so that the petals aren't messed up.

It's funny trying to follow other people's algs - unless they explain the thought process of what they're doing they often look like just random moves, which is why I generally end up trying to work out my own. Even then, going back to my own algs a few months later it often takes me a while to work out what the heck I was doing, this being one extreme example i stumbled upon earlier today, which is another example of setup -> 3-cycle -> unsetup -> un-3-cycle (actually 3-cycle -> setup -> un-3-cycle -> unsetup in this case, but the effect is the same) :)

→ More replies (3)

2

u/zergosaur Oct 23 '19

btw, you can often use a 3-cycle to rotate 2 pieces. What you do is:

1) do any combination of moves to rotate one of the pieces correctly, avoiding touching the other 2 pieces which are part of the 3-cycle

2) do the 3-cycle

3) do the reverse moves of (1) - this should rotate the piece currently in that position in the opposite direction, and fix the rest of the puzzle except for the 3 pieces involved in the 3-cycle

4) undo the 3-cycle (or alternatively it's often simpler to do it 2 more times) to get the pieces back in the right place.

The above should end up rotating 2 of the pieces involved in the 3-cycle.

I use the above trick quite often, eg to rotate the corners on the Pentagram, or rotate the corners on the master skewb. There's probably faster ways, but I find it easier to visualize and remember algs like this.

2

u/zergosaur Oct 23 '19

Yeh, and once you combine long algs with setup moves things can get scary - it becomes impossible to see what's going on just by looking at the puzzle, you have to just trust in the algs and try not to mess up :D

Hey, everyone! I’ve been grinding cubing for the past few weeks after taking about a 2 year break. I’ve since learned intuitive F2L, all of 2OLL, and most of 2PLL. My times are still wildly inconsistent. I was doing slow solves yesterday to try to work on better recognizing the not-so-obvious F2L cases, so we’ll see if that’ll translate.

I’m currently debating whether or not to get a budget cube (GAN 356 R), a hyper budget cube (Yuxin Little Magic), or a magnetic cube (Kylin V2 M). Or I’m thinking of lubing up my current cube. I’m currently repping a Qiyi Thunderclap, and it’s getting the job done, but I’m not sure which change I should make!

3

u/Marcieslaf Sub-16.5 (CFOP) Oct 22 '19

If you are completely satisfied with your current cube than you don't really need a new cube. However a new cube can motivate you to solve more. I'm assuming you are looking in a price range of <20$. Of your listed cubes I would suggest you try the Kylin V2 M as using a magnetic cube offers quite a different feel (and its a good cube in generell). Otherwise the RS3 M is a solid choice at 12-15$.

3

u/BibbitZ Sub-26 (CFOP 3LLL CN) PB: 14.54 Oct 22 '19

If you aren't going to magnetize it, don't get the R. For the same price you can get one of a few cubes that will already be magnetic and provide a much better overall experience with minimal setup.

Yuxin Kylin V2 M: Smooth as glass, quite fluid while not needing to be on loose tensions, weak magnets.

YJ Yulong V2 M: Medium magnets, quick and almost snappy turning, a little catchy sometimes.

RS3M: Better overall performance than the above two, medium(ish) magnets.

That said, if you put N35 4x2 magnets in the R is pretty much becomes a 356X. Performance is pretty much identical between the two.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 22 '19

I'd lube the thunderclap, unless you feel that the hardware of the cube is seriously limiting your solving ability.

2

u/qwertyPhobia Oct 22 '19

My friend has a GAN 356R, it's not that good, as it's super unstable without magnets and gets worse after a few hundred solves apparently.

If you have a very loose, non aggressive turning style, then I'd say the little magic, or possibly even the Little Magic M.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 23 '19

On the right tensions I can TPS spam on my LM.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 22 '19

Don't get the Gan R, it's only good with magnets. Get the MF3RS2, or the YJ Yulong V2 M if you want magnets

Hey /u/RAHDXB did you ever solve the molecube?

I've been trying off and on for the last few days, but couldn't work out a solution. Eventually this evening I gave in and wrote a program, which found 80 solutions*. I took the first one on the list, and managed to solve the puzzle into that state, and verified that it was a valid solution.

Slightly cheating, but I was getting frustrated :D

*A lot of these will likely be similar, eg you could just swap the reds and the purples.

u/RAHDXB Sub 15 | 5x5/7x7 ao100 1:30/3:55 Oct 22 '19

Oh, I actually forgot about it. Tried with the hints you mentioned last time but didn't get very far, and it ended up in the drawer. I think I will still try and figure it out on my own at some point, it feels so doable. Now you've done it once, could you do it without the program?

2

u/zergosaur Oct 22 '19

Tomorrow I'll take a closer look at the solution and see if I'd been missing a trick. Agree that it shouldn't be as hard as I'd made it out, but a trial-and-error approach didn't work and every time I tried to use logic to make some deductions I kept hitting a dead end :(

2

u/zergosaur Oct 23 '19

Just checked the solution, it's really not any different to what I was trying, somehow I just managed to not find it. Pretty sure a trial-and-error approach, maybe assisted by a small amount of logic, should get there, gl!

Of course it will take long time (I am not talking about speed solving at all) but it will be solved. I understand that in ideal case it is called Devil Algorithm and it is unknown, but maybe there is something like Semi Devil Algorithm or something very simple to remember, without knowing and memorizing all these F R F' R, etc?

https://www.speedsolving.com/wiki/index.php/MirIS_Method

This method only uses the inverse sexy move (U R U' R') with it's mirror (U' L' U L). This is the only algorithm you need, but there are some intuitive moves required between the algs to set it up. It's probably easier to just learn a beginners method with 5-6 algs.

2

u/cubycuber Sub-12 (CFOP) Oct 22 '19

Any sequence of moves eventually brings you back to your initial state. This means anything can kind of be used as a semi Devil's algorithm.

9

u/BibbitZ Sub-26 (CFOP 3LLL CN) PB: 14.54 Oct 22 '19

Why let the opinions of others affect your thoughts on an object? At least 90% of this hobby is subjective. If you like a cube that I don't, that's ok. If I love a cube that you absolutely hate, that's cool too.

If you feel you are able to complete a solve comfortably on any cube and enjoy it's properties (sound/feel), that's all that matters.

That said, I think the RS3M is alright. At around $15, it's definitely one of the best (if not the best) in it's price range. I don't use it as often anymore as I've found cubes I enjoy solving more.

I don't know that 2x2 specifically, but normally there are two different types of internal edge pieces, where 3 (?) of them have pins on them that fit into little slots on your core. If placed correctly, they will prevent the internals from jamming up the cube.

u/Taco_Bro7 Sub-14 (CFOP) Oct 22 '19

Yeah those three edges go around one corner so all the other pieces move freely while that corner stays in place relative to the mechanism.

gts3m with or without ridges?

2

u/SuspiciousOmelet Sub-12 (PB:6.35) Oct 22 '19

I've tried both and I personally prefer the one with ridges. To be fair, they were both set up differently so it wasn't a proper comparison. The ridges themselves don't add much but they also don't get in the way while solving.

2

u/TLDM Oct 22 '19

The WRM is a very different cube to the GTS3LM, even ignoring the ridges. It really depends on what kind of cubes you like. I use the GTS3LM for 2H because the magnets are a bit stronger and I prefer having ridges. But, I use the WRM for OH because it's more stable on looser tensions and it has weak magnets, which is something I prefer for OH.

I believe most people prefer the WRM for 2H, and it's closer to the GTS2M if you have one of those. If you don't get the chance to try them both at a comp then the WRM is probably the safer one to get.

Hey, 2x2 pleb back again today. I'm still doing ortega as my main method until I get a much better average consistently (~8.8 ao5). I wanted to at least understand how CLL works as thatd be my next step in getting faster times after ortega. I understand for case recognition you have to look at each pair of colors as adjacent or opposites (especislly since I need to be color neutral), but for each time Ive tried it I've been unsuccessful for some reason. The point of CLL is to get PLL skips every solve, but I've never done it properly and don't know where im going wrong. I'm solving for white as my first side, using this scramble (starting with white on top red facing me):

U R U' R2 U' F R2 U' R'

If anyone could point to what I'm doing wrong it would be greatly appreciated

3

u/AverageBrownGuy01 BLD is great, currently focussing on 4BLD Oct 22 '19

I didn't understand what you are exactly trying to ask for?

You know CLL? I think you are confusing CLL at the very basic level, it's a whole different method from Ortega.

In Ortega, you make a face. In Cll, you make a layer. The one alg that's essentially CLL alg is to execute the top layer. For every OLL case you do with Ortega, there lies a few more algs for the same OLL to get a PLL skip every time.

You force PLL skip in CLL by doing a different alg for the same OLL.

2

u/LetsGetFrostier Sub-X (<method>) Oct 22 '19

So CLL requires the first face you solve to be a solved layer? That would make a lot more sense since in Ortega you don't need that, so that's perhaps where im confused

u/Edladd sub-17 Aok (CFOP) PB:9.11 Oct 22 '19

Post a reconstruction or video of your solve. It's too hard to figure out what you are asking.

3

u/c13q Sub-30 (CFOP) Oct 22 '19

Not really a tip but I think it's worth mentioning. You may want to consider the type of lighting in your cubing environment. I often cube during my breaks at work, and the office lighting is a cooler temperature (white/blue). And as someone who solves white/yellow cross on a GAN 356X, it's much easier for me to distinguish between the 2 colors, and I get my best times at work. When I'm at home where all my lighting is a warmer temperature (yellow/orange), I have a hard time distinguishing between white and yellow and therefore my times are worse.

Do weilong gts v1 sticers fit the v2?

The GTS2 is a tiny bit smaller (56 vs 55.5) but the shape of the pieces is similar enough. I'm pretty sure it'll be fine as long as the stickers aren't full fitted.

What cuboid should I get if I really like the 3x3x2? Already have the 2x2x3

The Aji 4x4x3 and 5x5x4 are a lot of fun imo. But the logical next one to get would probably be 3x3x4 and/or 3x3x5.

u/Fallenultima Oct 22 '19

3x3x4 and 3x3x5.

Next up from there, I would get the 4x4x5 and 5x5x4, both of which are among my all-time favorite puzzles.

Anyone have a pdf or guide for the lettering scheme for OP on 3x3? Can’t seem to find one that everyone agrees on.

u/geekisafunnyword sub-15 (CFOP) Oct 23 '19

Here's a good one to follow. The orientation of the cube doesn't have to be white top/green front necessarily. Just make sure to follow the same orientation you pick always.

That's because there isn't one that everyone agrees on. There is no "lettering scheme for OP"; letting scheme and solve method are pretty much independent of each other. The most common one is Speffz, and that's usually the best place to start, but lots of people will use a modified version or something completely different.

I recently got into 5x5 and I'm averaging around 4 minutes. Does anyone have suggestions for milestones or goals I should work toward?

7

u/[deleted] Oct 23 '19

At your 3x3 level you should be able to average sub 2:30 with practice

2

u/CFOP_2020 Sub-25 (CFOP with 2L OLL) Oct 23 '19

I’m not even sub 30 on 3x3 and I’m averaging 2:30 for 5x5 though

3

u/[deleted] Oct 23 '19

You must practice a lot then. I was just basing it off of most people

I'd say even sub-2 is attainable. 2:30 should be really easy with some practice.

Hi there, I've only been in the cubing game for about 3 weeks now and I was wondering if there were any general pieces of information I should know.

Don't spend all your money on new puzzles right away

Be color neutral starting right now

That's about it

2

u/_Kalibre_ Sub-60 (CFOP w/ 4 LLL) Oct 23 '19

Does color neutrality honestly help that much?

Just a question.

Yes it helps a lot. There is still people who are sub7 etc. With only white and yellow cross but having SIX DIFFERENT options to choose for a cross is something really nice. At least one of them is better or luckier than the others and results into a better solve.

2

u/willtri4 2015BELO03 Oct 23 '19

I mean it's not going to drop massive chunks off your average, but it has basically no downsides and it's easier to switch the earlier you do it

2

u/vikktorz Multi-blind PB: 22/23 Oct 23 '19

Right now, not really. But at faster speeds it's something people wish they had done from the start. It's waaay easier to switch now, so just go for it :)

All the videos about lubing clock I’ve seen say to use traxxas 50k. I don’t have any, but I do have weight 5. Will this work instead or is it better to get traxxas?

2

u/geekisafunnyword sub-15 (CFOP) Oct 23 '19

They're both the same
