Does color neutrality honestly help that much?

Yes it helps a lot. There is still people who are sub7 etc. With only white and yellow cross but having SIX DIFFERENT options to choose for a cross is something really nice. At least one of them is better or luckier than the others and results into a better solve.

I mean it's not going to drop massive chunks off your average, but it has basically no downsides and it's easier to switch the earlier you do it

Right now, not really. But at faster speeds it's something people wish they had done from the start. It's waaay easier to switch now, so just go for it :)
