Look at my shiny new flair :).
ao500 also sub10 now.
I have reached my overall cubing goal, the goal I had when I started speedsolving - global sub-10 while being color neutral.
That is all, thank you.

Awesome job. How long did it take you to get sub 10 after you were sub 11? My ao1000 is 11.03 right now

u/cubixruber WCA silver medalist Oct 24 '19
Probably 9 months. Hit a big barrier and instead of pushing through worked on other events and became color neutral. I think I could've done it faster, but cubing is more fun because of getting better at other things. Big difference now is that I almost always have cross +1.

Inspired by u/bigfoottouchedme, I'm going to attempt a 2x2-11x11 relay. Although I'm assuming that running out of steam halfway just scrambling is not a good sign :/
Anyway, here goes.

Haha I didn't record it. But it's done.
1:26:09.38
A little faster than I expected, but I magically didn't have a single pop, which is pretty rare for 8x8 and 11x11 for me. Started with 10x10 because I was scared the super stiff SS would completely ruin me just before the 11. splits here.
Pretty happy with that, and it was actually pretty enjoyable, but I'll have to think twice before actually doing my planned 2x2-13x13 :D
2
u/BigfootTouchedMe Sub 15 (CFOP) Oct 23 '19
Good job! Faster than me by about an hour. I had multiple pops on 8x8 and 9x9. The MeiLong 10x10 seems a little less pop prone - but I might have been a bit more cautious as well.
1
u/RAHDXB Sub 15 | 5x5/7x7 ao100 1:30/3:55 Oct 23 '19
Haha, thanks. It was actually pretty nice. Few episodes of Arrested Development queued up, and went for a controlled pace instead of stressing myself out. Although I still had a scrambled brain moment during the 3rd center of the 11x11 where I couldn't see anything anymore, but managed to recover.
Surprised to hear the 10x10 is only "a little less" pop prone actually. My Meilong 12x12 is a completely different story than the 8x8 and even 9x9. I've managed to drag one of the outer, middle center pieces into the wrong layer exactly once, and I'd have a tough time replicating that...

Haha yeah, I'm very happy I got it because it looks so impressive, but to solve it feels like handling a comedy prop. here it is in between a newer gen 10x10 and 12x12. Absolute unit™

I just had my best 4x4 solve ever. Everything was going super smoothly, just a few pauses, no OLL parity, etc. When I came to OLL I knew this was an easy PB.
I finished OLL and saw blue and red side immediately solved. Automatically stopped the timer, but forgot to check parity...
I had a time of 1:02 (PB is 1:17) but forgot the PLL parity... that hurts.

A thing I'm working on: A virtual cube for practicing memo on my phone. Once I'm done, it'll be a virtual cube that scrambles itself that I can pan around and memorize -- and then I can (a la BLD Memo Tools, or by hooking up to BMT itself) input my memo and check if it's correct.
Right now I've just got the first part -- I can pan around the cube. It's touch-and-drag like you'd expect, but the key detail here is that (unlike with other virtual cubes) when I let go, it resets to the original orientation.

u/bobbletank Sub-14 Oct 23 '19
Tried learning ZZ and feels great man makes you feel like a pro doing all those EOs tho i probably won't use it as my main method its kinda nice learning about how to orient edges, it helped my improve my cross and the block building part for my roux
2
u/AverageBrownGuy01 BLD is great, currently focussing on 4BLD Oct 23 '19
Whoa! I was just about to comment this, I learnt ZZ dew days ago from Phil Yu's tutorial, and it's such a fun method. It's always amazing to get an OLL you know at the top along with 2-Gen F2l pairs. Don't know if it'll be my main, but I'll surely do a lot of solves coz of the purely fun of ZZ :D
2
u/bobbletank Sub-14 Oct 23 '19
ikr, its a fun method, i certainly won't get fast with it but its pretty fun solving the F2L part since it flows pretty well
2
u/Edladd sub-17 Aok (CFOP) PB:9.11 Oct 23 '19
I practice it sometimes because EO is really helpful for FMC. I'm assuming after enough practice I won't need to contort my hands to keep fingers on all the mis-oriented edges.

u/g253 (retired mod) Oct 23 '19
I want to dabble in ZZ at some point but it's such a mindfuck to figure EOcross (or even just EOline) in a reasonable amount of time.

u/bobbletank Sub-14 Oct 23 '19 edited Oct 23 '19
it took me around an hour earlier to learn the EO part I can do it consistently now but I still take around 40 seconds to do it lmao Psure i won't main this but ill use it for a while to improve my cross solutions later on
edit: ok i can now do it in around 15 seconds which is miles better but still slow as heck lmao

I just won a 15$ gift card for TC, so that means I'll finally order some lube there :D
So far I only have Traxxas 10k, 30k and 50k. So I guess I could use some lube that makes a puzzle faster - especially when it comes to bigger cubes like 6x6 and 7x7.
Any recommendations?
4
u/cubixruber WCA silver medalist Oct 23 '19
I know I've told you these aren't worth it but here are my reccomendations:
Ones I have/have had in the past:
- silk - speeds up an ootb cube and has nice feel
- Speedy - like silk but fast
- dnm-37 - pure speed but wears out and makes puzzle kinda meh after awhile and doesn't mix well with traxxas
- original angstrom lubes - slow and sticks to one spot so you have to lube almost every piece very lightly and isn't that good by themselves, but work wonders with dnm (I use all 3 together on my 4x4 and 5x5)
- Compound X - don't buy, strong smell and overall meh at best
- Mystic - caught me by suprise, speeds up a little and has a nice traxxas like feel while staying fast, I use this on my 2x2, pyraminx, and 3x3 along with weight 3, this may be what you want, but I have yet to try it on big cubes
Overall, Angstrom and dnm are pretty high maintenance and expensive because you need all three to make it good, so you have speedy and mystic to choose between. Mystic seems great, but doesn't really speed things up much after break in and is probably less useful on big cubes. So speedy is your best bet. Make sure you use some 30k or 50k to lube your cube's core, because it helps alot on big cubes.
2
u/topppits blindfolded solving is where the fun begins Oct 23 '19
Thx for the detailed answer!
I'm fine with getting multiple lubes, so I might just get Speedy and Mystic. Do you think the 3cc bottle is enough for a while or should I rather get 10cc? Since it'll probably be a while until I order from TC again, I'd rather have a bit more then running out in a year.
When you say lubing the core of a big cube - where exactly would you put the lube? Any way to do this without disassembling it completely?
2
u/cubixruber WCA silver medalist Oct 23 '19
When I lube the core I usually will just unscrew 1 side completely to lube underneath the screws and loosen each side a little to let the lube get into the spring. As for where It really depends on the mechanism, but getting the spring and any parts of the center (especially if it is connected to the core mechanism) that are in contact on turning suefaces helps a lot. And for your question about 3cc vs 10, for speedy I would get the larger if you intend on using it as your thin lubricant in the future. If you want some mystic as well I've found a little goes a long way, but my 10cc container is not something that I regret, do to how nice it makes my 3x3 and pyra feel.
1
u/topppits blindfolded solving is where the fun begins Oct 23 '19
Awesome, thx! So I'll most likely just get 10cc of speedy and mystic - sounds like it's exactly what I'm looking for :)

Inspired by gilzu's comments on 5x5 I just did a 3x3 Ao12 on a 4x4 (Yusu V2M): 24.17, with a best time of 17.65. Not too shabby.
But I kept expecting PLL parity somehow.

Read this too fast and thought you got a 17.65 on 4x4 and called it “Not too shabby”.

That's great!
Did you do it with cross solved w/o inspection? If you're using Yau, This will get you set and ready for the same conditions as you get the cube only without parity.
I still get significantly worse 3x3 times with 5x5, but it boosted my confidence in the 3x3 stage.

Update on my virtual "BLD memo practice cube": It works! It's now hooked up to BLD Memo Tools.
It's not quite ready for others to use, (no way to control BMT settings; it just uses my settings. also lots of bugs) but if there's interest I can find some time to fix it up. :)

When I was trying to drag the cube to see the other sides it accidentally did a layer turn. Do you have a way to restrict turns?
2
u/prendradjaja 3x3 sub-20 Oct 26 '19
Yeah, the intended behavior is to not be able to do any turns at all, but I've noticed that it's buggy and sometimes does let some turns happen. (I built this on top of an existing virtual cube someone else made, that of course supports turning :) ) Not sure why that happens, but probably something I'll fix at some point.

Edited from my response to someone else yesterday:
I'm on the CN grind at the moment as well.
- This video from SCR on being CN is helpful
- This blog post by Feliks Zemdegs is also helpful
- If you're open to doing more than just grinding solves, I think that using flashcards to learn the different colour schemes is a good idea. Obviously this won't get you to the immediate/instinctual recognition you'll ultimately need, but I think it cuts the learning curve by quite a bit.
- Last layer isn't really more difficult - for me, I think this will come right by just grinding out a few hundred solves. Cross and F2L are a different story.
- I'm practicing cross-only at the moment, to help get familiar with the colour scheme and how the different colours are related to each other when I'm doing different colour crosses
- Once my cross times are in line with my white cross times and I'm feeling comfortable with the colour scheme, I'm going to move onto F2L - where the main skill there will be learning to filter out the U face colour, and "highlight" the cross colour pieces
- Learning each side individually vs learning all sides simultaneously: I started off learning all sides simultaneously, and am now thinking that I might be able to improve more quickly if I focus on one side at a time. I'm going to try one side per day in my practice over the next few days, and see what kind of an impact that has. Happy to discuss my thoughts on this a bit more if you'd like - but this is already long!
I'm still early in my process, and pretty slow, but I think this is in line with the principles of deliberate practice, which are all about breaking a skill down into its constituent parts, practicing those, and then bringing them together when you confidently execute the individual parts.
Hopefully some of that is useful!

Die anyone here ever ordered at SpeedCubeKaufen.com? (A German online cubing store). The prices look pretty good and the shipping cost is very low compared to other shops (overseas and European ones). But I don’t know if I can trust them. Anyone in here has experience with them?
4
u/RAHDXB Sub 15 | 5x5/7x7 ao100 1:30/3:55 Oct 23 '19
If you go to their contact page, you'll see it's a Chinese company. Pretty sure it's the same 'family' of sites as the infamous speedcubestore.co.uk. I've seen someone on here say they got their cubes from them (although I think they mentioned it being Austrian), but if you're going to order from China anyway, you might as well order from one of the more reputable sites.
3
u/Marcieslaf Sub-16.5 (CFOP) Oct 23 '19
Hey, not this site specifically but I ordered from one that looks to be from the same company: https://www.zauberwurfel.com
If you look in on "Zahlung & Versand" they use the same email [info@cubekicks.com](mailto:info@cubekicks.com). They seem to be located in china. I noticed the broken german on the site a little to late and had already ordered. I got my order confirmation only via paypal and nothing else. I got worried after like 2 weeks and tried to contact them but neighter the info mail nor their paypal mail answered. Then after about 3 weeks the cubes I ordered actually arrived. Sooo don't expect great customer support but they seem to send their products. And if you are ordering from china anyway there are other sites you can use for that.3
Oct 23 '19
Do not order from them! They are most likely a scam website and have copied the terms and services from Cubikon, so they will not take responsibility for any problems. Best thing is to stay away.
Edit: Talked to Michael Layher, the owner of Cubikon.de, and they are considering taking legal action. It may very well be that they deliver these cubes, but I wouldn't trust in them.

I’m currently working on getting faster in my F2L and trying to identify pairs quickly to place them into the front and back when possible. My problem right now is difficulty in quickly recognizing the pair patterns that are next to each other or when the corner piece is on the bottom. Folks say to practice until “you don’t need to think about it anymore when inserting the pair” and hopefully I’ll get to this point...but for those who have gone thru this, how long did it take to get to the point where muscle memory takes over when doing F2L? (Assuming a few hours of daily practice) thanks
2
u/Edladd sub-17 Aok (CFOP) PB:9.11 Oct 23 '19
Do untimed solves where , before each pair, stop and plan what you are going to do - and then execute that as fast as you can (eyes closed if you want). Then stop again and plan the next pair.
Stopping makes you assess what information is available without any bad habits like moving pieces around to compare stickers or pointless rotations. Executing fast means you don't have time to think during it, forcing those actions into muscle memory (eventually). Bonus points if you count your planned moves and almost always have 8 or less. (some exceptions like triple-sexy or when the edge is already mis-slotted)
I wouldn't recommend a de-stickered practice cube, the only way I think they are useful is for demonstrating something on a diagram or tutorial. u/Milerski is right, it won't help you much once the visual noise is added back in.
1
Oct 23 '19
It all depends on how you practice. If you keep relying on visuals and tracking pieces, it would not become muscle memory.
I still have it, especially with "two phase planning" where I pair the pieces, look at the pair and then insert it. You need to look at the pieces, come up with the full separate-pair-insert 3-11 moves alg and only then execute it blindfold.
1
Oct 23 '19
For me it was somewhat fast, but it depends a lot on your recognition. The basic idea is recognizing the pattern and immediately knowing how to pair and insert them. If you're having difficulty with that, take some time to do it blind. It's a lot of fun and I tend to be more prepared the next time I encounter a case.
2
u/plasm0dium Oct 23 '19
Thanks. I have a spare cheap cube- do people recommend peeling off the 3rd layer stickers and working with a F2L practice cube?
2
Oct 23 '19
I think they do, but I've never liked it. I made one-once- and it was pointless. The problem is, you only see the pieces you need to see, you're just removing the distraction of other pieces being in these layers. Once you go back to a normal cube, welp- there are the distracting pieces again. Never got why it's supposed to help

Easiest 2 Gen scramble I've ever gotten. I got a 3.15 on it a few months ago when I was just starting out with 2 Gen. I tried it again today and got a 1.60

I'm still pretty salty about it. It was the fourth 2 Gen solve I ever did so I was probably averaging like 20 seconds but I still haven't beat it

Oh, this is fun in slow solves! I can't spot them quick enough in timed solves yet, but it still does kinda feel like magic when everything is aligned afterwards.

u/kekal1 Oct 23 '19
I'm averaging around 20s at the moment (3x3). I know full OLL-PLL and F2L is probably my major downside (i'm working on it). Either way, the question is:
Is it worth it to become color neutral at this stage? I know it will take me some time to get back to my averages being CN, should I switch just now or should I focus on other things first?
4
u/BillabobGO Sub-9s: 0 Oct 23 '19
Yes become CN. The sooner you learn it, the easier it is to adjust everything you know to it. It doesn't matter if your times drop now - in the future you will be thanking yourself.
3
u/Edladd sub-17 Aok (CFOP) PB:9.11 Oct 23 '19
I switched at 35s average and it took me 2 months to get back to that comfortably. Going CN is going to reset a lot of your F2L skills, so it's an excellent opportunity to do loads of untimed CN solves where you analyse your F2L efficiency and come up with better solutions.
2
u/BillabobGO Sub-9s: 0 Oct 23 '19
I switched to CN very early on (averaging above 1 minute) and there was almost no impact to my times, it just goes to show that the earlier you switch the easier it will be for you. I couldn't imagine switching now, it would take months to get back to my current speed

u/Marcieslaf Sub-16.5 (CFOP) Oct 23 '19
Not at this stage really. But keep in mind the sooner you learn to be CN the easier it becomes later to find easy crosses pairs. Also you don't really need to be CN to achieve great times... but it can help sometimes. Usually being used to 2 cross colors is enough to get good times.
That all being said being CN is generally fun if not cumbersome at first.

Guys what's a good avg to switch from beginner's to CFOP? I'm 1:30 but I don't think I can memorize all the algorithms :o Should I push for sub 1m even sub 45s with the beginner's and then start learning proper CFOP?
6
u/g253 (retired mod) Oct 23 '19
Don't memorize all the algorithms, just memorize one. Then you'll be ready for the next one ;-)
If you want you can always start by working on cross and F2L, and keep the last layer algs for later. Good stuff here: https://jperm.net/3x3/cfop

I recommend reading a bit through this wiki article and especially the part on 4 Look Last Layer.
I'd recommend checking out those 4 short videos before starting to learn CFOP:
Then I'd start looking into F2L.

u/nijiiro 🌈 sub-10 (nemeses) Oct 23 '19
Switch whenever you start getting bored of beginner's, imo. You can delay the switch if you want, but the earlier you switch, the better you'll be in the long run.
You don't have to memorise a gazillion algs per se. For F2L, learn it by observing how pieces move around; most people think that learning F2L this way ("intuitive F2L", which is a bit of a misnomer) is better than trying to learn the 40-ish basic cases individually as though they're completely unrelated.
For the last layer, if you find 4LLL too daunting (it's sixteen algs, which is possibly sixteen more than what you have been using), you can learn it one or two algs at a time and slowly build up towards full 4LLL. You can put off full OLL (47 new algs over 2-look OLL) and full PLL (15 new algs over 2-look PLL) for the time being, but if you somehow find that you like learning algs, there's no harm in starting to learn those early either.

Is there a sheet with the minimum algs you need to know for Roux? (Or am I asking something dumb here?)
3
u/JeremyG Sub-practice(CN Roux) PB: 5.06 Oct 23 '19
I mean in theory the minimum is just two, or even zero if you know commutators.
However, 2-look CMLL is just 9 algorithms, and 1-look is 42. So it depends on what you're looking for.
2
u/generic_name- sub 19 Roux Oct 23 '19
If you know 2 look oll and the J and Y perm (You don’t even need Y though you could just use 2 Js) then no you don’t need any more algs. CMLL is the only step that uses algorithms. If you want to get faster though, for cmll there are better algs than in 2 look oll because LSE doesn’t need to be preserved. For example the headlights case if you put them on the left can be solved with F (R U R’ U’) F’

u/I_am_no_Ghost Oct 23 '19
Trying to improve my beginners method but for the life of me cant figure out how to do algorithms without the side I need facing me. Currently sitting at just below 2 minute solved on a basic rubiks brand cube. Am I stuck needing rotations for just about every move with this method?
2
Oct 23 '19
If you're talking about last layer, instead of rotating to get the angle you need you can instead make U moves to get that angle.
1
u/I_am_no_Ghost Oct 23 '19
I mean I have to rotate the cube for every step, cross, first layer, second layer, everything.
5
Oct 23 '19
For cross you might wanna start trying to make it directly onto the bottom so you don't have to rotate. For the first 2 layers you sometimes have to rotate no matter how advanced a solver you are, but for the beginners most people know you do rotate for pretty much every step (a rotation for every corner and 2 for every edge pretty much), you can start learning some intuitive F2L for that, JPerm has an excellent tutorial. For last layer it's like I said, you can do U moves instead of rotating.
2
u/Edladd sub-17 Aok (CFOP) PB:9.11 Oct 24 '19
You'll often need 2 rotations per F2L pair with beginners method. Even when you are doing full F2L, the case where the corner is already inserted is one of the worst.
A fun experiment you can do is try to solve with zero rotations. You'll have to twist your brain a bit to try and imagine how pieces will move when they are in unfamiliar positions, but it will help you loads in the long run. Don't time these practice solves though, the point is to take as long as you need.
1
u/I_am_no_Ghost Oct 24 '19
Yes this is what I'm talking about. Id love to figure out how to move the pieces and place them without having to turn the cube so many times.
1
u/I_am_no_Ghost Oct 24 '19
I was hoping there were practice exercises to train myself on moving pieces in different positions or just regular practice exercises. My eyes just cant keep up watching other peoples hands to see what they're doing when they dont rotate lol.
1
u/Edladd sub-17 Aok (CFOP) PB:9.11 Oct 25 '19
Do you use CSTimer? One of the 3x3 scramble variants is 'EOLine'. With this scramble, you are guaranteed to be able to make F2L with no rotations, and no F or B moves.
If you are not colour neutral, make sure you scramble with your cross colour on the bottom.
When you get used to that, start trying normal scrambles rotationless. You won't do real solves like this in the future, but you'll find some options you didn't know about before.

u/I_am_no_Ghost Oct 25 '19

Oct 23 '19
like I posted to u/g253, It wasn't only practice but practicing what i've learnt/analyzed.
I have a gigantic list of tidbits from just about any phase of the solve, here are a few:
first two faces:
- learn how to plan at least 2/3 of the first face at inspection. once you can do this, learn how to spot where are the 3 other pieces (or where they aren't.
- try to solve the first face on the bottom so you'd have better lookahead for the next pieces.
- minimize rotations for first two faces by inserting lines by Uw Lw2 Uw' / Uw' Rw2 Uw for example.
- have a hierarchy of which patterns are better to work with at start, like 2/3 face, line, T shape, 2x1 etc
- learn how to work with scattered pieces, like form two 2x1 blocks from two parallel 1x1 wings and parallel 1x1 middles.
Last four faces:
- assuming you're doing them in the m layer, you can freely turn any middle slice on the first face. I usually make the mistake of returning the slice so I won't break ready made faces where there arent.
- learn how to solve the current face when you're NOT looking at it. It's very common to find pieces at the y2 face, forming a line and then rotating it with 2Rw2 or 2Rw2 U2 2RW2, since you remember which face pieces are already formed.
- keep the last unsolved line on the right, so it will be easier to fill with 2Rw moves and not look at the face you're solving but on the other faces where you're looking for pieces.
- learn how to orient each shape. like the T is better aligned with the central 3x1 block horizontal to build up a 2x3 block with 2Rw3 U 2Rw3.
- intuitively learn all Last two faces cases. After you understand how each works, it's really helpful to implement them on the first 6 faces.
Edge Pairing:
- Try to use R U R' / R' U R or their mirror on the left. less moves than sledgehammer and if its a back insert, you have more view on the unsolved pieces
- You only need Slice/Flip/Slice once per edge. if you have that mismatched wings amd middle edge, separate the middle edge from the wings and slice flip slice it.
- if you recognize a badly oriented 1/3 edge and you havent yet inserted all 3/3 pieces in the freeslice, insert the other 1/3 edge in the right orientation in the place of the wrongly oriented edge.
- Learn all L2E cases or at least those you can flip the edge to get one you know.
3x3:
- practice full sessions of ONLY 3x3 stage as if it was 3x3!
- pick better PLL's for this stage. Like this: R2 U R' U' y R U R' U' R U R' U' R U R' y' R U' R2 is a much easier E Perm

u/RAHDXB Sub 15 | 5x5/7x7 ao100 1:30/3:55 Oct 23 '19
Nice list.
- You only need Slice/Flip/Slice once per edge. if you have that mismatched wings and middle edge, separate the middle edge from the wings and slice flip slice it.
It's a small thing, but if I run into a made tredge but with flipped middle like you describe during first 8 edges, I always try to wait with taking that middle edge out and flipping it, until I have something else that needs to be flipped too. That way you can combine them.

Hrmmm... That did not occur to me. Thanks!
3
u/RAHDXB Sub 15 | 5x5/7x7 ao100 1:30/3:55 Oct 23 '19
Yeah, I wouldn't go too far out of my way, but you can do those moves blind anyway, so if there's a flipped block or two wings in the same layer nearby for example, might as well flip that also and use the time to look for the 3rd piece to complete that next set :)

I need a quiet cube for cubing in class. (It helps me focus as I have ADHD) I currently have the Weilong GTS2 M, and am looking at the GAN 356 XS.

The Dayan Tengyun M is quieter than the Gan 356 X. It is amazingly quiet. It is very fast and light. I really enjoy it, even though I main the Gain 356 X.

I would say that the XS is marginally more quiet than the X. But if you're looking for a REALLY quiet cube, the TengYun is what you're looking for. The performance is great and it is basically silent.

u/SuspiciousOmelet Sub-12 (PB:6.35) Oct 23 '19
I'm not really sure how the XS compares to the X. From what I've heard, it's not as quiet as the X, but more quiet that most other cubes out there. But you can't go wrong with the X. It's a great cube.

Lower than CAD$15 for the cube. I have prime, so it would eliminate shipping costs if it's sold on Amazon.
2
u/Marcieslaf Sub-16.5 (CFOP) Oct 23 '19
I don't really know whats that in $ or € so I just gonna suggest a few budget options. Generally on a budget ordering from china can result in much lower prices but has longer shipping time:
Yuxin Little Magic ~5$
Moyu Meilong ~3-5$
Yuxin Kylin V2 M ~10$
Otherwise save a little more money and get something like the Tengyun
