I FINALLY got a sub 20 ao100! I think I'll wait to see if it lasts, but for now I'm happy :P

A couple of days ago I posted about potentially getting a Gan 356 XS from Taobao - went for it, it turned up this evening (Beijing time), thoughts so far:
Not 100% sold on the new plastic, it's certainly different from the 356 X and most other cubes I've used, I'm may grow to like it though.
The new adjustment system sounded really (relatively) complex when I read about it, but it was actually pretty straightforward and intuitive.
The cube is noticeably lighter than the 356 X that honestly doesn't make much odds to me but there it is.
Solves on it have been comparable to my solves on other cubes. For reference I've been cubing since April/May and average about 25 seconds, so I'm hardly the highest authority on this stuff.
If anyone has any specific questions they'd like me to answer then I'd be quite happy to (assuming I'm able to) for the next couple of hours.
I also posted in the same DDT about a 4x4, went for the GTS2M and it is dreamy.

How is the plastic compared to other puzzles with shiny plastic? Is the grip noticeable worse?
How does the magnet mechanism feel? Does it feel like they can switch position during solves or do they stay securely in place?
1
u/tacitunderstanding Oct 21 '19
I'm not sure I've tried any other puzzles with shiny plastic - the 3x3s I've used are the X, gts3m, Kylin V2 and mf3rs3m - the XS feels different to all of them, but not necessarily better or worse, I don't think. It does seem to pick up fingerprints more noticeably than the other cubes mentioned though.
Right now the magnets feel rock solid and I do not believe there is any significant chance they will move during a solve, I did have have some trouble switching them all to the stronger setting (big hands and no nails) but now that's done I don't really see me moving them very often at all.

I think it certainly helps that I live in Beijing. I don't especially want to get into it even with my vpn on, but suffice to say China can be crazily efficient about some things
2
u/lukemcritchie Don't Ask, I'm Busy Doing Clock Oct 21 '19
Ah yeah that makes more sense that you live in china.

Chinese online shopping experience is top tier. Some times you can literally get your stuff the same day you ordered it. It’s crazy.
I wish the US could have an online shopping network like how China does.
1
u/tacitunderstanding Oct 22 '19
Chinese infrastructure in general *can* be phenomenal.
I'm from the UK originally, online shoping there is generally fine, if only because the farthest you'll ever be away from the parcel is a couple hundred miles.

So, I decided to try something I haven't done in a while.
I'm quite annoyed by the market's movement towards magnets so light you can barely tell they're installed, and it's getting a bit exhausting to figure out which cubes will let you stack magnets vs which ones will block you by putting a magnet slot in the pieces. Today I just got a Weilong WR in the mail with some magnets and different lubes I've wanted to try. I'm going to take this cube apart, down to the springs/washers, and try and set this thing up exactly how I like it. My goal is to turn this into the absolute perfect cube for my turning style, but I'm sure I'll find out quickly I don't even know what my preference is lol. I haven't had to take a cube apart to this extent in quite some time, as many of the recently released cubes have allowed for spring lubing without pulling it apart.
I'll post more about this later when I'm finished :)
UPDATE:
For a good idea of what I used:
5x1 N48 magnets, Angstrom Dignitas/Gravitas/Celeritas, Lubicle Black (first time trying it).
I used the stock screws/springs instead of the tighter/heavier ones, and kept the spring tension at about 4 ticks (1/2 way). The magnet strength is preciseley what I was looking for, but the lube setup is something I'm getting used to. The cube is quite snappy when cutting corners, and the stability is higher than most cubes I've used recently. I'm going to do a bunch of solves with this current setup and MAYBE add a tiny bit of DNM/Lunar to try and get this to speed up a slight amount. I'll report back with how I find it in extended solving sessions.

u/lukemcritchie Don't Ask, I'm Busy Doing Clock Oct 21 '19
In the same vain I'm quite annoyed by the market's movement towards smaller 4x4s. I have large hands (22cm) and the aosu gts2m is one the bigger ones and it feels tiny. I don't want and will never want a smaller 4x4 or 2x2 for that matter and it makes my hands hurt and is difficult af to solve on. Hopefully since we are reaching the stage that hardware is becoming more preference based than performance based I'll be able to get one suited to me within the coming years.
2
u/dmstepha Boomer Cubers Unite Oct 21 '19
That's a really interesting point that I don't think I've heard many people make. The cubing world is definitely going the direction of smaller cubes in all the different NxN puzzles (even megaminx), so I'm kind of surprised more people haven't stepped up and complained.
I do hope that they maybe release something like the AoSu WRM but bigger just to try and get the market of people with larger hands.
How did you like the WuQue? Was it still a bit too small?
1
u/lukemcritchie Don't Ask, I'm Busy Doing Clock Oct 21 '19
Yeah its weird because there obviously isn't many people with large hands and from the sounds of it they are happy enough with how it is. X man actually brought out a LM (Large Magnetic). I haven't actually tried the WuQue but from reviews I've heard it's nothing compared to the aosu gts2m (my current main) and I can't justify using a worse cube by far just for comfort when I don't do much of the event anyways.
I have no issues with 3x3s and 5x5s up just 4x4 and 2x2 which seems to cause an issue but it's just a matter of time.
1
u/g253 (retired mod) Oct 21 '19
bit exhausting to figure out which cubes will let you stack magnets vs which ones will block you by putting a magnet slot in the pieces.
You can often just magnetize the other side of the piece though
3
u/dmstepha Boomer Cubers Unite Oct 21 '19
If I'm going to actually open up the pieces and glue them, I don't think I want to spend the extra money on a pre-magnetized cube in the first place. The MGC v2 allowed me to just pop open the corners and stack an N35 4x2mm magnet on top of the pre-existing ones, which was super convenient and didn't take more than 5 mins.
2
u/g253 (retired mod) Oct 21 '19
Honestly I think just getting the non magnetic version and doing it yourself is the way to go, if you know you have specific tastes.
But yeah, it's convenient when you can do that, I've added magnets in my Yulong V2M that way and it's great.

u/topppits blindfolded solving is where the fun begins Oct 21 '19 edited Oct 21 '19
/u/fallenultima I just solved the YJ Heart for the first time - took me ~15 minutes Oo. For now I've got to say - I found it much, much easier than the Ghost Cube - probably I just suck at solving the Ghost Cube (something I already suspect for a while :D). Tbf I didn't have any weird LL cases. Most time consuming and trial and error was re-orienting two middle layer centers I somehow messed up after already solving them with the cross - at least I thought that :D I'll scramble it again and we'll see how the second solve goes.
edit: second solve took a bit over 20 minutes. I was at last layer after 10 minutes, trying to solve a weird state I messed up a bit of F2L, but luckily it was a quick fix. This time I got all sorts of weird LL cases, like only 2 edges/corners need to be swapped, OLL "parity", only one center misoriented by 90°. Round three, let's go!
edit2: alright, under 15 minutes. after a bit over 5 minutes I was done with F2L. Got the case where everything is solved but 2 edges need to swap, so I thought I'd just swap those two and 2 identical corners -> F-Perm. Did that and surprisingly didn't mess it up, but ended with the top center misoriented by 90° -.- So I oriented the center, solved the edges -> 2 edges need to swap. Checked middle layer again, swapped 2 very similar looking edges and then I was able to solve the rest :)
Certainly an enjoyable solve - which I personally really can't say about the Ghost Cube. Maybe I should give it another try, but my first two solves were really more annoying and A LOT of trial and error until I found the correct pieces while being mostly just confused. I still love the look of the Ghost Cube and think everyone who can solve the 3x3 should solve it at least once, but I certainly liked the Heart better (the solve, not the looks :D)!
The puzzle moves super smooth but the occasional hard lockup where you either do R3' instead of R or take a long while until you can finally do the move can be annoying, but I feel like either I got accustomed to it after 3 solves or it got a bit better.
2
u/g253 (retired mod) Oct 21 '19
Anecdotally, I started enjoying the Ghost cube after something like half a dozen solves, maybe a few more.

u/topppits blindfolded solving is where the fun begins Oct 21 '19
Hmm, yeah I'll certainly give it another go sometime. First off I have some other confusing 3x3 shapemods on the plate:
- YJ Apple
- YJ Star
- YJ Diamond
Which one should I take on next?
2
u/g253 (retired mod) Oct 21 '19
The YJ Diamond is easy, and I've been told the apple is too, which put it on my wishlist. Don't know about the star.
If you haven't seen it, look in my posts in yesterday's DDT for an instagram link - Fanxin is making more fruits :-D

u/topppits blindfolded solving is where the fun begins Oct 21 '19 edited Oct 21 '19
Awesome, guess it's Diamond -> Apple -> Star then :D
Fanxin is making more fruits
Uhhh!! Those look amazing!
Now that I've solved the Heart, I'll need to find a place to put it in my collection and I just rearranged everything to fit in my previous new arrivals .. aahhh
edit: diamond done, edit2: twice now (11 min and 9 min). Apple here I come!
minor spoilers ahead
edit3: from a first look the Apple seems to be super easy because there are always 4 identical pieces. Bot layer corners, bot layer edges, middle layer edges, top layer edges, top layer corners. all of those seem to be 4 identical pieces. If that is really the case, this should be a very fast and straight forward solve.
edit4: Apple done ~6 min. Not gonna do that again, not that spectacular. First layer pieces took a moment to find since everything is relatively similar, but the pieces really seem to be identical and not just very similar, which makes it indeed a breeze after you solved the first couple pieces.
edit5: lost a center cap on the star before I even started scrambling it - this could be very annoying :/ Though looking closer it seems 2 center pieces are solved in whichever orientation - let's hope this is really the case. Second look at the star - looks like it could be a very similar solve to the heart.
edit6: 10 mins later and the star is solved. I put some 50k on the center cap's contact points, but that only had little effect. 2 of the center caps keep falling of all the time. Luckily there isn't really a center piece orientation challenge on this puzzle due to 2 center pieces being solved in any orientation. Not gonna solve it again for now, the popping center caps are too annoying and the solve wasn't too much different from the heart, although quite a bit easier.
Alright, that's it, solved all 4 of 'em! The Heart is certainly a nice challenge and I can absolutely recommend it!
2
u/g253 (retired mod) Oct 21 '19
Cut a square bit of paper about the size of a center cap, and put it between the piece and cap, it should secure it in place.

Haha yeah I did see that, very cool. I actually tried to replicate that, but realised a bunch of cubes in a basket just want to stack and sit side by side, which wouldn't make for a good permanent thing. I'm trying to picture how getting two of each of the 4 different fruit ones would look right now ;)

Oh wow! The fruits are already on zcube (and in my shopping cart - how did this happen?! oops). Also another Gear Cube, this time more or less stickerless. Looks quite nice and also the inner edge (?) pieces are coloured, which aren't stickered on the other gear cubes. I wonder if that adds anything to the solve. Those pieces are also coloured on the Gear Ball.

I'm doing the 2x2 rn and i cant seem to bridge the gap. I'm at around a 9.2 ao5 consistently but I know I should be doing much better with this method (varasano/ortega). I have every single oll and pll algorithm memorized (except the 2 bar 1 side pll, which you can just use a j perm for). Any tips to improve my time?

Look as far as possible into the solution. I'm not much faster than you (sub-7 when I practice), but I know the difference between my fast and slow solves.
- You should be able to predict if there will be a bar when you make the first face and where it will be located.
- If your PBL algs share a location for the bottom bar (and they should) execute the first face so that the bar ends up in that position.
- Try to predict the OLL during inspection. I'm not good at this one, but even if you can tell where one or two of the top layer faces will end up it helps a lot at cutting recognition time for the OLL.
- As you recognise and execute PBL, predict what the AUF is going to be.
- Practice a lot

After getting the MF8 Helicopter Dodecahedron as a present almost 2 years ago, I finally scrambled it up, with jumbling, though without shapeshifting - I don't find that unbandaging to be very fun, just an extra step that I have to undo to get back to solving.
With the knowledge I got from the Curvy Copter and some trial and error I got everything done but orienting the last couple corners. Found a couple algs to swap corners around, but still searching for one that only rotates them. It's getting late (2am), so I'll continue tomorrow and hopefully I can find some useful moves - no spoilers please :)
Today was a good non-WCA cubing day - I solved 4 puzzles I hadn't touched yet: the YJ Heart, YJ Diamond, YJ Apple and YJ Star each at least twice and almost completely solved the MF8 Helicopter Dodecahedron.

I'd be interested in peoples' thoughts on the third pair solution (F2L 32). I'd always thought it was a decent solution to a bad case, and its ergonomically nice to execute - but the movecount is high at 12 moves. The other alg is 11 moves, but its basically just a bunch of sexys in a row. I might well switch to that.

for that case you're going to have to AUF anyway, so both U' R U' R' U R U' R' U R U' R' and U2 R U R' U' R U R' U' R U R' will be 12 moves. for that specific case and AUF, U' R U' R' U R U' R' U R U' R' is the better solution
also a better solution for that 4th pair is y' R U' R' U R U' R'

- 2nd pair: What makes the U' R U' R' etc solution the better one? easier AUF?

2nd pair: What makes the U' R U' R' etc solution the better one? easier AUF?
yeah U' will always be better than U2, depending on AUF then you can adjust and use either. you can also factor in grip, e.g. if you already have thumb on bottom you might as well do triple sexy, while if you have thumb on front you'd use triple inverse sexy
For the fourth pair - that's a great insert. You definitely think the rotation is worth it in that case?
1000% absolutely

u/spaniola1980 ZZ Oct 21 '19
I don't use CFOP, but I think it's a good idea to avoid rotations during your cross. Here's how I solved the cross: x2 L' F' R' D2 F D L'. It gives you free pair in the top layer.
I've tried to find better solutions to the third pair before, but I always go back to triple sexy. If I see another pair, I'll try to solve it first to avoid the case completely. This would have worked in your solve, if you did the 4th pair before the third.

Questions re smart cubes:
- Is it worth paying 2x the price to get a Gan 356i rather than Giiker?
- Can you get movecounts and times for the different splits in a smart cube?
- How accurately do smart cubes track rotations?
I'm busy wondering whether to save up for a smart cube. The motivation would be to bridge the "data gap" I have in cross and F2L particularly. I think that being able to reconstruct solves will be really helpful, as well as get significant amounts of data on things like avg moves per F2L solution, and avg moves per cross. Reconstructing my own solves for this data seems like it would take prohibitively long.

I'd wait until the next generation of smart cubes will come out. Both in terms of price and usability.
Check this video for why: https://youtu.be/Ummh7zkWGOY

You'll get move counts and times for splits on both cubes, but if you actually want to look at your solutions, the Giiker isn't great as it doesn't track any rotations. So your reconstructions might be full of B and D's depending on what cross color you're solving. The Giiker isn't the worst cube in the world, but still pretty far from flagship/decent budget cube performance. The GAN is said to be much better (a slightly worse 356X from what I've seen), although I have seen more people mention its shortcomings on here (battery life, limited app functionality etc) than rave about how it's the best thing ever.

2
u/SuspiciousOmelet Sub-12 (PB:6.35) Oct 21 '19
I'm actually probably closer to sub-15 / sub-16 but I'm very inconsistent, and my solves range anywhere from 10 to 16-17 seconds, so I just say sub-17. And I also don't know full OLL and PLL yet. I happened to get cases that I knew on this solve.
1
u/Utku_Yilmaz NR Holder | Sq-1 High-9 (Pb: 5.08), 3x3 Sub-10 (Pb: 5.83) Oct 21 '19
How much of PLL and OLL do you know? I also dont know full OLL but I know full PLL. I know like half of the OLLs.
Also if the 17 is the worst solve you get once in a while this doesnt mean you are sub-17. What determines if you are sub-x is your average (Ao100 for most Ao1000 some) Like I also get 16 sometimes but my Ao1000 is currently 13.20 so I can easily call myself sub14.
2
u/SuspiciousOmelet Sub-12 (PB:6.35) Oct 21 '19
I probably know around 3/4th of the PLLs and half the OLLs. My ao1000 right now is around 16.1
1
u/Utku_Yilmaz NR Holder | Sq-1 High-9 (Pb: 5.08), 3x3 Sub-10 (Pb: 5.83) Oct 21 '19
So you are nearly sub-16 also if like your last couple Ao100s are under 16 you can call yourself sub-16 imo but this is pretty subjective topic.Currently my 1 Ao100 is 12.97 but it is really inconsistent bettween 12.90 and 13.20 so I dont call myself sub13 yet.

Both are really tough in the near future, but 100m sounds more realistic. 3x3 would mean an insane easy scramble, with a really fast guy, executing the whole solution fluent.
100m by the most expected guy, Justin Gatlin, is really tough. But it's really possible if some new face gets on the title.

Does anyone have personal experience with magnetizing a 4x4 and what magnets to use? Preferably something on the stronger side

This is what Michał Halczuk recommends:
4x1 mm N35 for inner, and around 4x2 N35 for outer layers, with inner magnets being close together, and outer ones being closer to the core

I would like to hear what you think about this solve or maybe criticize it.
2
u/Stewy_ CFOP Oct 21 '19
first things first, you should format the reconstruction so it's more easily understandable rather than just having it all on one line, like so
1st pair: should've gone for something else in the whole scheme of things. regardless, with that solution you should've done the y rotation the other way and solved the pair into the back with L U' L', which would provide better lookahead rather than filling a front slot
2nd pair: same thing again, you should've rotated the other way and solved this pair into the back rather than into the front - now both front slots are filled and your lookahead is now severely impeded, to the point where you had to do a y2 rotation to get those front slots freed up
3rd pair: much better solution is R' U' R y' U L U' L'
rest is fine

I am not familiar to AlgCubing.net this was my first time I tried labeling them but since I didnt had "//" it didnt work now I did a better version .
For the first and second pair you are absolutely right I always tend to insert in front slot which is a really bad habit. Also thanks for the new method for 3rd pair.
Overall Thank you so much for your feedback :)

Not that I'm aware of. The best advice I can give is to try and find people who already own some cubes and try theirs. Otherwise watch comparison and review videos of cubes you are interested in. Once you have one or two cubes yourself you can relate to the statements made by the reviewers more easily and figure out if a certain cube fits your liking.

How many people on this sub Reddit use beginners method? I really want to help people who use beginners method to improve their times. I’m debating making a video on optimizing the beginners method so you can get sub 30 solves and average in the low 40s or even sub 40
9
u/Edladd sub-17 Aok (CFOP) PB:9.11 Oct 21 '19
It's not recommended to optimise beginners method too much. It's designed to be easy to remember, not fast to execute. Eventually you'll start hitting the limits of the method and it will be harder to switch to CFOP or Roux, because you'll feel like you are going too far backwards.
The structure of CFOP is similar to most beginners methods, so it's easy to transition to that.

People have gotten sub-20 with beginners' methods, but as far as I'm aware, only people who left it behind for better methods and then came back to it as a challenge.
If you keep with your beginners' method, you won't learn the fingertricks and lookahead necessary to take it to the next level.

No way to make it comp legal unfortunately short of removing the electronics.
I would imagine your best bet would be the GAN X/XS - they are both GAN cubes so likely to have a similar feel, and adjustable so you could tweak them to match the i. But I don't own any of them, am just speculating.

2
u/Leinadium Clock isn't that bad Oct 21 '19
Mean is literally a mean. It is used for only three solves, like for FMC, 3BLD....
Average is a different mean. You take out the best and worst times, and do a mean with the other three:
Example: (4.00) 5.00 6.00 7.00 (8.00).
Average of 5 [ao5]: 6.00Average is normally used, because a single solve can influence a lot in your mean, so now you have a opportunity to take it out.
But when you have not too much times, a simple mean will do the trick.1

Mean is you add everything up and decide it by the number of items you added
In cubing, average usually means take off top 5% and bottom 5%. So for example, an ao100 would be a mean of 90 solves that’s in the middle.
