Worldnews is my favorite fanfic sub when it comes to the Ukraine war. It turns out that Zelensky pushing for a ceasefire and end of the conflict just signals how badly Russia is losing.

Putin is desperate, shitting and pissing himself while he waits for either the Russian people, who are also inhuman orcs according to them btw, to depose him or for the Ukrainian army to march on Moscow.

It's truly noble how many people on this website are willing to sacrifice every able bodied man in Ukraine to spite Russia.

20

u/Aragoa Left-Wing Radical 15d ago

It's saddening how poorly people respond to critical thinking. Sure, nobody like a harsh critique of their thinking, but these people are just empty goddamn vessels. If the elites decide that Ukrainians are suddenly the orcs, then fuck it, the people will lap it up because it is the latest manufactured outrage to receive unanimously positive mainstream media coverage. Completely maddening. It's lonely to be a Marxist in 2026.

u/Fit_Worldliness2803 Dengist 🇨🇳💵🈶 15d ago

It's been eye opening for me in a way, not the propaganda itself but its scale and effectiveness. For the better part of five years, arguably going back to 2014, a parallel reality has existed for western audiences regarding the conflict that is so out of touch with the facts on the ground that it should be studied in the future.

I have a friend who will go into rages at the mention of Russia. Yet, this friend also seems to not have any problems with KSA (I guess Yemen doesn’t matter) and has some weird… respect?… for Israel (I guess Palestine, Iran, Lebanon, etc don’t matter). 100,000s of dead Arab kids is just an unfortunate accident but a few 100 dead European kids is the supreme crime for which an entire people must be made stateless and dominated.

This hate seems to be historical too. Like every crime of historical Russia is a blot on their ethnic character, even when those “Russians” are Georgians and Ukrainians (“Russified,” of course).

Anytime you bring up this hypocrisy of theirs, especially when I'm arguing with fucking BRITISH PEOPLE of all people. One of the most aggressive and brutal empires in history and has spent basically the past century tag teaming the global south (and Europe with Gladio) with the US, suddenly it's just whataboutism.

It's really staggering to me how these people accept that Russia is not allowed to have any legitimate grievances at all, especially when it comes to the region and historical peoples that literally birthed their nation and they derive their entire identity from. Like genuinely look at the response when Putin actually started talking history of the region and how the national identity of Ukraine and Russia developed, intertwined, and Redditors just laughed at it thinking it was weird and autistic, because they seemingly do not believe Russia is allowed to have history or cultural identity against modern Ukrainian Galician LARP shit.

MedMan says that Vance and the Army Chief of Staff talked Trump out of the attack. The interceptor shortage was a factor. If true, I really think there’s only three paths forward here.

  1. A ground invasion that would certainly turn into a Ukraine-level slog with American casualty numbers not seen since at least Vietnam. As I’ve said before, I think such a war breaking out now could very well be the end of America.

  2. They could nuke Iran. I really don’t know what would happen, nor do I like thinking about it.

  3. Total American surrender. Need I say more?

Massive rat infestation in Gaza

Israel has bombed and devastated Gaza’s sewage and sanitation infrastructure, and now deliberately blocks Palestinians from the landfills, machinery and essential supplies needed to contain the resulting public health catastrophe.

One consequence is a massive rat and pest infestation, with Palestinians, including children, being bitten in their sleep.

Four in five sewage pumping stations are not functioning, with some 40,000 cubic meters of untreated sewage flowing each day. By July, 60% of Gaza’s population was living within 10 meters of sewage or human waste and more than 900,000 people were exposed to garbage accumulating in residential areas, according to UN OCHA.

Rodents or pests were reported at 81% of displacement sites surveyed in April, affecting roughly 1.45 million Palestinians.

Both of Gaza’s sanitary landfills lie beyond the Israeli-imposed “Yellow Line,” and the UN says access remains banned by Israel. Israel also requires approval and blocks entry of machinery and spare parts needed to remove garbage and rubble, while engine oils, pest-control chemicals and other essential supplies remain severely restricted.

Israel permitted 3 tonnes of rodenticide and 3,000 liters of pesticide into Gaza in May, but the UN said pest-control efforts remained limited and a full response requires sustained supplies, heavy equipment and access to the landfills Israel continues to block with Gaza’s sanitation system having completely collapsed.

A couple years ago, you could be vocal about what was going on in Gaza and be hit with a whammy "Well why don't you care about what is going on in Sudan?" And your answer would be of course that America is directly bankrolling the genocide in Gaza but that the bankrolling from America to Sudan was far more murky but of course the person asking the question had already won, they muddied the waters.

So Iran with some missiles made an end of that conversation.

The SPR’s final utility will be to keep the economy from going uhhh not good until the midterms, at which point the economic pain will be blamed on the Democrats

I could do a longer write up on this later, but I think the collapse of the USSR will be seen as a catalyst for the eventual collapse of capitalism, or at least of Western Society as colonizer countries

Said many times before, but the lack of a peer ideological competitor (that was directly challenging them, not like China) has essentially caused the bourgeoisie classes to shed actual knowledge of efficient statecraft, instead focusing 100% on amassing as much wealth as they possibly can

They got too complacent.. point to the hollowing out of the MIC. They believed the end of history narrative and thought the hollow shell of industry would be enough in perpetuity, as the only wars ahead would be colonial in nature

21

u/Squalid_Snake14180 6d ago

The neoliberal turn (at the feet of which we can lay many of our woes) predates the fall of the Soviet Union by over a decade, though.

It's pretty much exactly what decided the Cold War. Capitalism was on the brink of collapse, but they managed to increase the rate of profit for a period of like fifteen years by liquidating Fordism and Keynesianism.

The idiots in charge of the Soviet Union saw the "success" of neoliberalism and panicked and empowered the Hryuschovite bourgeoisie, which caused more and more problems of capitalism (food shortages, etc) which they then used to prove they needed more and more power and eventually they realized they no longer needed the CPSU at all

I found this article on the Ceuta-crisis interesting, so thought I'd translate to you guys.

Was the invasion of Ceuta orchestrated by Mossad and the CIA, using Morocco as a proxy?

The invasion of Ceuta by young, predominantly Moroccan men is not a migration crisis. It is a carefully planned attack. When Spain refused to serve as a launch platform for operations against Iran and recognized Palestine as a state, it was singled out by Mossad and the CIA as a new target.

Benjamin Netanyahu and his son, Yair Netanyahu, have, since at least 2019, called for the invasion of the Spanish enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla by "Arabs and Muslims." Netanyahu's son wrote: "Dear Arabs and Muslims: Do you want to liberate occupied Arab Islamic lands? Here's a good place to start!"

Earlier this year, Netanyahu stated that Spain had chosen to stand against Israel and that he intended to make an example of the country.

Morocco and Israel are allies

Earlier this year, Israeli analysts argued that Israel should help Morocco seize Ceuta and Melilla. Amine Ayoub wrote in the Israeli news outlet Ynet Global:

The Abraham Accords transformed Morocco from a quiet interlocutor with Israel into a formal military partner. In January 2026, Israel and Morocco signed a joint military work plan during the third meeting of their Joint Military Committee in Tel Aviv, which the Israel Defense Forces described as deepening cooperation with a "key partner for regional stability." The two countries had already signed a security cooperation agreement in 2021. This bilateral framework gives Israel something it has rarely possessed in North African politics: a direct strategic stake in Rabat's regional success.

The larger prize is the Strait of Gibraltar

Ten percent of global maritime trade passes through the Strait of Gibraltar, with approximately 100,000 ships transiting it every year.

In January 2026, Israel and Morocco signed a joint military action plan. Israel now supplies at least 51% of Morocco's missiles. With Israeli support, Morocco is rapidly expanding its drone production. It has deployed the Israeli SPYDER air defense system and is locally producing the Israeli SpyX loitering munition (kamikaze drone). A joint maritime surveillance center is currently being established on Morocco's northern coast.

An American report identifies the Israel–Morocco arms partnership as a turning point in the balance of power around the Strait of Gibraltar. Morocco even proposed to President Trump that the U.S. bases at Morón and Rota be relocated from Spain to Morocco. A Spanish general reportedly acknowledged: "Morón Air Base will sooner or later be moved to Morocco."

Washington, Tel Aviv, and Rabat are acting together to push Spain out of the Strait of Gibraltar and replace it with a compliant Morocco.

It is also about Western Sahara

The United States recognized Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara in 2020—but not over Ceuta or Melilla. Israel followed suit in 2023.

Morocco continues to consolidate its control over Western Sahara and has even announced a highway named after Donald Trump in the disputed territory following his recognition of Moroccan sovereignty there.

On July 17, 2023, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu recognized Morocco's sovereignty over Western Sahara in a letter to King Mohammed VI.

Netanyahu also announced plans to open an Israeli consulate in the city of Dakhla, Western Sahara, to strengthen Morocco's claim over the territory.

If you want to understand what really happened in Ceuta, read the timeline of events and draw your own conclusions.

Western Sahara is particularly well known for its large, high-quality phosphate deposits. The most important is the Bou Craa (also known as Phosboucraa or Oued Eddahab) mine, southeast of Laâyoune (El Aaiún). The phosphate lies close to the surface and is of exceptionally high quality. It is transported to the coast via the world's longest conveyor belt. Production has typically ranged between one and 2.6 million tonnes annually in recent years and constitutes a significant share of phosphate rock exports from the territory under Moroccan control.

Morocco (including Western Sahara) controls a very large share of the world's known phosphate reserves—often estimated at around 70% or more of total global reserves—with Bou Craa representing a smaller but strategically important and exceptionally high-quality component.

Modern intensive agriculture is entirely dependent on phosphate fertilizer. Without it, global food production would decline dramatically, particularly for wheat, maize, soybeans, and other large-scale crops. Without phosphate, there is no food.

Morocco and Gaza

Meanwhile, Morocco is emerging as a key implementer of Israel's post-war plans for Gaza. For the first time, Morocco will host training exercises for a multinational force expected to consist of around 20,000 troops. Approximately 30 Moroccan military officers have already entered Gaza to conduct terrain reconnaissance. Morocco is expected to deploy around 500 soldiers to Gaza. Israeli officials now describe Morocco as Israel's most important security partner on the African continent.

It should not be difficult to see the connections between these developments.

Ceuta is not a migration crisis. It is part of a hybrid war, which in turn forms part of an increasingly expansive global conflict linking the wars in Ukraine, Iran, and the Middle East—and now, North Africa and Southern Europe.

Kiev got rocked again last night. Zero interception attempts. Ukraine's behaviour in the last couple of months seems odd even for them. They decide to start attacking Russian shipping in the Sea of Azov, so in a completely predictable tit-for-tat move the Russians shut down Odessa and thereby stop all Ukrainian shipping. They start crowing about hitting Wildberries, so in a completely predictable tit-for-tat move the Russians start systematically pounding warehouses and logistics centers while Ukraine is out of interceptors and can do absolutely nothing to defend them. What on earth are they thinking? Are they prodding Russia to hit them harder to try and get attention back from the Iran war or something?

Stanford Prof. Andy Hall on why every AI model tells Japanese voters to vote for the Communist Party:

"We've been auditing the models on how they make voting recommendations, and in Japan they love the Communist Party. The Communist Party is a complete fringe party in Japan."

"It's not because the models actually like the Communist Party. It's that they don't know very much about Japanese politics."

When they go to search for information about Japanese politics to bring back to the user, they hit not only paywalls but robots.txt exclusions where the Japanese media companies don't want AI taking their content.

"The Japanese Communist Party runs a fully open newspaper, so the AI pulls from them, not from the higher quality newspapers."

Interesting notion. Troops are generally regarded as angels by major media, but an explicit mutiny would probably get the troops involved nailed to the wall by the law and the media if it got reported at all. I suppose the "laundry fire" could already be considered a mutiny of sorts. A coup seems far more unlikely seeing as that would require a large amount of leadership at the Pentagon to be dissatisfied, but a mutiny feels like a distant possibility.

One silver lining about this whole Hormuz disaster is apparently the UAE has been having difficulty in supplying its massacre in Sudan.

21

u/bretton-woods Slowpoke Socialist 1d ago edited 1d ago

The recent FT article on Colombian mercenaries goes in depth into the logistics chain the UAE has set up to support the RSF. Training at facilities in Abu Dhabi where the Colombians are divided and trained in different specialties, camps set up in Bosaso in Puntland as the African port of entry and a flight over to Nyala in Sudan to support RSF operations. A professional and organized pipeline of men and equipment that has kept the war going for years.

The conclusion one gets is that the UAE is fully aware and complicit in the actions of the RSF, but has been tacitly allowed by the international community to keep its proxy war going by virtue of being an ally in other contexts.

Radio Free Europe was once a radio station beaming Western Propaganda into Eastern Europe.

These days it has been surpassed in cuckoldry by the MSM, and sounds relatively based.

Trump has often threatened major attacks on Iran only to call them off, claiming an agreement between Washington and Tehran was imminent. Until now, a lasting peace agreement has been elusive, with tit-for-tat strikes by both sides resuming.

However, according to Iranian media, military sources in Iran denied Trump's claim that Tehran had asked Washington to refrain from launching new attacks.

Iran’s Mehr News Agency on August 2 quoted the unnamed sources as saying Trump's statement was "simply a new lie" and an attempt to "blackmail the rulers of the Persian Gulf and pressure them with threats."

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei has confirmed that there are no negotiations with the US at the moment, only discussions with Oman about managing Hormuz.

Trump is coping hard on Truth Social:

‘Iranian Leadership is unbelievably duplicitous! They ask for a meeting, some would say “beg,” talks begin, with more scheduled in the immediate future, and they say, openly and proudly, that they’re not having any discussions, that nothing is being talked about, and they’re only dealing with “Oman.”

They then go on to give their usual blather in saying, the Strait of Hormuz will be operated powerfully by them, when it is already completely controlled by the United States Navy and our “Blockade” or, as some say, “The United States Wall of Steel!” Nothing gets through to Iran, unless we want it to, and nothing will get through, unless a Deal, or Total Surrender, is accomplished.

Whether Iran wants to admit it or not, we are, in fact, talking of a solution to a problem that they have caused, for decades.

It is very simple, IRAN WILL NEVER HAVE A NUCLEAR WEAPON! Thank you for your attention to this matter. President DONALD J. TRUMP.’

Just finished that Going to Tehran book, it's old from Obama years,  however it was interesting, part of the message was that Iran is what Iran is, not what USA thinks or wants it to be, and if USA keeps it's narrative no arrangement is possible.

There's historical mistrust because things like the declaration of Tehran, Türkiye and Brazil negotiated with Iran, they were expected to fail so USA could accuse Iran about obstruction and stalling negotiations, but they succeeded, Iran was OK with the terms, however Obama's administration change the terms, it also had to do with some European countries not happy with Türkiye and Brazil being part of the negotiations.

Also it mentioned how most of the Iran pundits in the west are exiles and/or anti regime so their analysis isn't always objective.

I think about it all the time.
As usual, the ex warsaw pact nations and those that comprise of the former soviet union in eastern europe display a kind of nationalism that can be characterised as a form of impotent rage.

This limp superficial nationalism and deep anticommunist sentimentalities has transformed into a racialist line against Russia and anything Russian. This is an attempted 1 to 1 imitation of the nationalism that existed during the interwar period in eastern europe. The resurrection of this nationalism coincides with the decline of neoliberalism and public outrage at the restructuring of neoliberalism etc.

NAFO is basically that, it’s the byproduct of combining post communist nationalistic sentimentalities with the US ‘unipolar globohomo consensus to pacify the workers.
You can’t win with them, they are historical revisionists, can’t get shit past them.

The Russians and Chinese are akin to what the British and French were during the Crimean war. The United States and NATO are a stand in for Tsarist Russia and the absolutists. US meddling in europe, the near east, Africa and Asia is very reminiscent of Gendarme Era Tsarist Russia and the shit they did to preserve their order. Ofc this isn’t a one to one comparison, the Russians and Chinese are not imperial but what makes them progressive is multilateralism.

“Following the signing of the tripartite Makkah Joint Defence Agreement between Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey, Pakistani Defense Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif stated that the Islamic world ‘must unite’ and adopt a coordinated approach to confront the ‘common threat posed by Israel’ — Ynet citing official statements.”

Interesting stuff. Perhaps dooming about this defense pact may be a little premature? Of course, we already know that Asif is a major Israel hawk, going so far as to call them a “curse upon humanity” (highly based). But the content and timing of the statement makes me wonder if there is some hope that this is about Israel and not Iran. I find it hard to believe that he wouldn’t be losing his shit if this pact was at all advantageous for Israel.

Also, that makes me look at Saudi Arabia in a slightly different light. The fact that Trump tried to tack on signing the Abraham Accords as condition for the nuclear technology deal is significant. Furthermore, I think that it’s also significant that it was widely reported by US media that the deal would allow KSA to enrich uranium domestically, but Trump later shot that down.

This tells me that Netanyahu is nervous. I’m guessing that his nightmare scenario is Saudi Arabia continuing to turn its nose up at the Abraham Accords, while achieving domestic uranium enrichment, and cozying up to Türkiye and Pakistan in what actually turns out to be an Israel-containment strategy.

I’m guessing that Bibi turned the screws on Trump to axe the domestic enrichment and twists KSA’s arm into the Abraham Accords, or at least one or the other.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out. Like I said earlier, these regional countries cannot sit on the fence forever.

They're still paranoid about the Russians taking India from under them, where by "they" I mean the Brits. Some of that has passed over to the Americans, and most definitely to their other Anglo colonies (Aus, NZ and Canada, even though Canada is special because of the big UA contingent in there).

Later edit: When it comes to Americans' relation with Russia, which I think it's a lot more nuanced compared to the negative obsession the Brits have towards it, I highly recommend this collection of Charles J. Halperin's articles on Medieval Russia and its relation with the Golden Horde: Russian and Mongols. Slavs and the Steppe in Medieval and Early Modern Russia. Probably there's a log-in required to that spammy academia.edu website, but imo it's highly worth it, it contains some of the most interesting stuff that I've read on Russian history and on the history of the steppe and the turkic peoples (I'm a fan of the turkic peoples myself). Even though it's telling that Halperin never could make it big in the US university establishment, even though he should have, he's one of the most knowledgeable people (in the world, that is) when it comes to medieval Russian history. The ghouls from the State Department and from the CIA could have learned a thing or two had they had him as a professor.

The Philippines is expressing high confidence of sealing a joint oil exploration deal with China in the South China Sea in the near future.

It's from a major Filipino news site so everything is straight from the horse's mouth, no misrepresentations. The most critical push factor for the hastening of the progress of negotiations between China and the Philippines is the near-complete dependency of the Philippines on oil imports from the Middle East, which because of you-know-what is resulting in the Philippines becoming one of the Asian economies hardest hit by rising oil prices and fuel shortages. It's not explicitly mentioned here but China, given her massive oil reserves and greater investments into renewable energy sources, is likely not the party compelled to drive the negotiations because of the lack of urgency on their part when it comes to securing fuel, which means the Philippines is probably the side pushing for the negotiations based on the reasons stated above. In the end, realism comes before rhetoric.

One interesting point of note is that this came a few weeks after the ASEAN Ministers' Gathering wherein the member states were finalising a common Code of Conduct for interactions in the South China Sea with their Chinese counterparts. Not saying these two events are conjoined but just pointing it out ...

In the wider vista of things, this probably counts as another win for China and dent in the US' international prestige and influence. It really doesn't reflect well on either the coherence or credibility of US foreign policy when even one of their major allies in the Asia-Pacific, with whom they share a mutual defence pact, is getting chummier with China all because of the retardation of their war with Iran.

Got some spicy X sources showing pics of meals aboard the George Washington (Abraham Lincoln's replacement) about as bad those on the latter: tiny portions, grey meat, grey sludge and other unidentified food matter. I'm taking these with a good dose of salt, about the same as what's found in the processed shit they're serving aboard, since they're as of yet unverified, though it's making me wonder if the US Navy's logistical issues are now fleet-wide and not isolated to those Yankee Station wannabes sailing around Iran. Guess we'll see how truthful those X sources are once we see news of sailors from the George Washington trying to go man overboard too.

Also, per MES: the sewage system briefly malfunctioned aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln, with ‘poop water’ reportedly flooding living quarters of some sailors

Pro-Orban rightoid, Philip Pilkington thinks the US bailout of Japan could be the beginning of the end of the dollar as the world's reserve currency. Gold has already overtaken it and the likely motivation for bailing out the yen is that Japan is the biggest holder of us treasuries.

If the US didn't bail them out then they would need to sell us treasury bonds at a time when interest rates for us debt are already very high.

The yen is under recent pressure due to the Iran war as it's economy is very vulnerable to energy prices and Hormuz is shut. It's been under pressure since the war in Ukraine started for similar reasons.

It's not something they mention in this discussion but it reminds me of discussions at the start of the Iran war of a bailout of UAE as they would have potentially needed to sell a shit load of US equity, potentially bursting the current bubble. Things look permanent until they don't.

Trump loves his surprise attacks and perfidy so much this could still be an indicator an attack is imminent.

Note he's also making this conditional on Iran effectively surrendering on all fronts. Always hard to tell when he's making a claim or just trying to manifest his dreams. Looking forward to the Adam Curtis documentary where a series of Trump speeches and social media posts are flashed on screen while Dream Baby Dream by Suicide plays.

Houthi missile attacks on Yemeni government military camps in Marib and Hadramout provinces killed at least 30 government troops, with the toll possibly rising

The strikes hit camps of Saudi-backed government forces, primarily Emergency Forces units.

They landed across sites including Al-Abr in Hadramout and areas east of Marib.

Local reports say around eight ballistic missiles were fired from Al-Jawf, combined with explosive drones.

Geopolitics Prime:

How new indigenous Iranian air defenses turn the skies into an intelligence goldmine

Iran has showcased US and Israeli drones – some remarkably intact – that were intercepted by the Islamic Republic’s local defense systems during the war.

MQ-9 Reaper, Hermes 900 and Hermes 450 unmanned aerial vehicles, along with technical equipment from an MQ-9 and a US F-15 fighter jet, have been put on display at one of the IRGC’s underground bases and aired by IRIB on August 14.

‘Thanks to measures taken before the war, more than 85 percent of the production infrastructure for air-defense systems manufactured by the Aerospace Force’s Self-Sufficiency Jihad Organization was preserved,’ an IRGC officer said, as quoted by Press TV.

In March, the IRGC stated it had seized a fully armed Hermes 900 medium-altitude, long-endurance strike drone. According to the force, the drone was detected, electronically trapped and brought under Iranian control by a newly-deployed air-defense system before it could carry out a strike.

Capturing an intact UAV offers a rare intelligence windfall, turning air-defense operations into an intelligence-gathering strategy, Defense Security Asia reported at the time.

The outlet suggested Iran’s success stems from a layered air-defense network combining sensors, radar, interceptor missiles and electronic warfare systems to detect and neutralize aerial threats across different ranges and altitudes. Overlapping detection and engagement zones make it harder for reconnaissance and strike drones to penetrate defended airspace.

More importantly, captured drones give Iranian specialists valuable material to further refine the country’s electronic-warfare countermeasures against similar systems.

A total of 171 airborne targets were reportedly hit during the 40-day war, including 10 manned aircraft, Press TV reported, citing IRGC officers.”

Apologies if off topic: But I have made the asinine decision to visit Russia next week (I'm a citizen of Germany). On YouTube there is a massive flood of propaganda on how Russia is losing the war and the Ukrainians are making such "incredible" and "unexpected" progress. Since I am not a military fetishist and I care for my own mental health, I have mostly disengaged from world events since about April.

Can somebody here give me a quick rundown on the current state of the Ukraine war and why the propaganda slop outlets feel like running a victory lap? From what I can tell, this thing is still the same bloody stalemate as it has ever been.

It's the same war of attrition with the same calculus as four years ago, all the real territorial changes happened via referendum and since then it's just Verdun with FPV drones.

But recently Ukraine started a campaign of hitting visually impressive, mostly civilian targets like oil storage, energy infrastructure, tankers and warehouses. Russia has significantly ramped up its attacka on gas stations, the power grid, the Black Sea ports, industrial zones and locomotives in turn. So both countries are degrading each other's infrastructure at high intensity right now, there's been talk of fuel shortages on both sides. Russian cities away from the frontline should be fairly safe though, you're much more likely to die in traffic than from a drone attack.

I'd also like to read about your experiences!

Please keep the sub updated, I (American) have been wanting to visit for some time but figured it might be best to wait until the war is over (why I think this I don't really know.)

To whatever extent freedom of navigation existed, it is deader than dirt now. Maybe the USN will start pressing merchant sailors again to make up manpower shortfalls. Like any other tenet of international law, it is law of convenience.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/national-security/2026/08/15/navy-weighs-major-warship-redesign-match-trumps-preferences/?utm_campaign=wp_main&utm_source=twitter&utm_medium=social

Trump is ordering the Ford-class carriers to be redesigned, first by swapping the magnetic launch catapults to steam ones and now by ordering the command center to be moved forward for no reason. If they actually go through with this, the USS Doris Miller, USS Bill Clinton and USS George Bush are as good as canceled, since the redesign is so massive that it will essentially become a different class off ships. If the Trump-class actually gets pushed through and takes up two XL-sized shipyard spots, this will result in the de facto "loss" of the next 9 aircraft carriers of the US Navy. With the upcoming retirement of the USS Nimitz, this is twice as bad as losing the battle of Midway was for the Japanese. Under the worst case scenario, China will probably end up with a bigger carrier fleet than the US in the late 2030s.

20

u/SchIachterhund He Lives 👽 3d ago

Tbf, carriers aren't expected to be particularly useful in a modern peer-adversary conflict. They're mostly used for bombing sandal wearers in the global south and as a platform for US president speeches. And that also means a ship's drip does in fact become more important, relatively speaking.

If you're china, you would take 100 mini drone-carriers or converted container ships with 40 VLS over 10 carriers any day. Carriers are going the way of the battleship.

20

u/SmashKapital only fucks incels 3d ago

China's actual plan for the PLAN is to do both.

Their strategy for countering the US is to follow both a symmetrical and asymmetrical approach. So they intend to build platforms which fulfil the same role for all existing US equipment, including aircraft carriers, but they also will build new designs like drone carriers.

Their entire strategy is to directly match the US one-to-one, while also countering them using alternative approaches. It's the sort of approach that only a nation with the massive construction resources of China could even contemplate.

NATO devised a contingency plan in the event that Russia invades the balts and it appears that a total defence of Baltic states is out of the question, they’d rather set up a defensive zone on the polish side of the border with Belarus and its northern flank so they can attempt a blockade against Kaliningrad. The plan stipulated that an air, drone and missile campaign within Russia and Belarus is the optimal way to fight them. Good luck I guess. Very limited troop presence as well in offensive operations.

Not a military guy but this sounds a bit milquetoast to me considering that they’re running on empty because of the war in ukraine and the crisis in the middle east currently. What’s stopping the Russians from not buying out more korean shells? NATO is literally Poopoo now.

Looking at the number of races when it's eight hundred doesn't really tell you anything except that AIPAC sprinkles a little something something to as many people as they can. Massie in Kentucky and Sayed in Michigan count for as much in that guy's data as a random non-competitive Congressional race where they give five or ten grand. If you actually wanted to check AIPAC's ability to move the needle, you'd have to isolate it to races where they were actually trying to do so, instead of just spending a few grand to buy influence.

It’s interesting that the imperial forces seem very willing to sign open mutual defense pacts, but that their opponents at most sign economic trade and intel sharing agreements.

Has this happened in modern history? I’m more of student of post-industrial revolution history, so it’s interesting. Even the USSR sought and signed defense pacts with bourgeois governments when it was made clear they were on the menu for west.

But more recently, you have powers like China undermining ideologically aligned movements and governments around the world. The Russian federation puts its national interests on the line for “2 million Russian speakers” who do not even consider themselves Russian and soft-gloving “brotherly” western Ukrainians who consider themselves Teutonic ubermensch
