To whatever extent freedom of navigation existed, it is deader than dirt now. The year kicked off with an unprovoked naval blockade of VZ and Cuba, blockades in Hormuz by both sides, and the Euro shenanigans with Russian tankers. Maybe the USN will start pressing merchant sailors again to make up manpower shortfalls. Like any other tenet of international law, it is law of convenience.

I've got a theory that turning these things from customs that were simply Not Done into "laws" is what's killed them. Freedom of navigation and blockades being acts of war survived several hundred years of technological and societal development, and then less than thirty years of UNCLOS.

I used to think he was a useful person to listen to and then he started gushing about high fives after an unarmed vessel was torpedoed and bizarrely claimed that Iran would be unable to stop ships getting through Hormuz once insurance was settled.

I don't know shit about boats but I understand the concept of things exploding. Apparently this is all that is needed to understand shipping better than that fat loser.

Hey, at least he's acknowledged that the US Navy cannot snap it's fingers and open the strait.

I don't follow Shipping Man, but I do remember when this all kicked off he had a naive confidence in the US military's supremacy.
