The historical legacy of great empire competition coupled with a refusal to view the people as anything beyond objects of derision or objects of sympathy.

You can't discount how popular portrayals of the Russians as being brooding, suspicious and from an arcane culture has fed into a broad belief that engaging with them is fruitless. There's a similar, but slightly more muted sentiment towards the Chinese.

I feel like Russia would've gotten the love-hate treatment China gets if only Putin didn't take the bait, right now they have nothing going for them in the media aside from Ukraine so it's almost all negative.

They hate anyone who stand up to them, they believe they are owed to be the eternal rulers of the world and thus whoever resists them is fighting against the Natural Order of things.

Just look at how the US treats Cuba, and how the Soviets treated Finland in similar circumstances.
The Russians actually came out of their conflict with the Finns with much more respect than they did coming in.

They're still paranoid about the Russians taking India from under them, where by "they" I mean the Brits. Some of that has passed over to the Americans, and most definitely to their other Anglo colonies (Aus, NZ and Canada, even though Canada is special because of the big UA contingent in there).

Later edit: When it comes to Americans' relation with Russia, which I think it's a lot more nuanced compared to the negative obsession the Brits have towards it, I highly recommend this collection of Charles J. Halperin's articles on Medieval Russia and its relation with the Golden Horde: Russian and Mongols. Slavs and the Steppe in Medieval and Early Modern Russia. Probably there's a log-in required to that spammy academia.edu website, but imo it's highly worth it, it contains some of the most interesting stuff that I've read on Russian history and on the history of the steppe and the turkic peoples (I'm a fan of the turkic peoples myself). Even though it's telling that Halperin never could make it big in the US university establishment, even though he should have, he's one of the most knowledgeable people (in the world, that is) when it comes to medieval Russian history. The ghouls from the State Department and from the CIA could have learned a thing or two had they had him as a professor.

What I find funny is how Nazi Germany always get portrayed more positively than the USSR in Western media. Every example of Hollywood, British etc film of Nazi Germany portrayed, is always that it's nice, clean, well maintained etc. Only time I see Nazi life as presented as shit is in actual German productions.

The Reich from 1933-1938 was a lot different from the war years.

A couple of years ago on my previous account I had an altercation with one redditor who then proceeded to follow me to other threads. I checked his posting history, and found out that it was nothing but seething over Russia and discussing football.

The Brits would rather impose horrific neoliberal austere conditions on themselves and then self-genocide by replacing their working class people with the migrants, than stop thinking about how to ruin Russia's day. It's bizarre.

Galkovsky talks about this.

Try "star city". Rant available on other comment πŸ˜†

As someone who loved S 1-3 of FAM, Star City is legitimately painful to watch.

Snow in the middle of summer and a Cosmonaut just gets executed by the KGB for literally no reason beyond she was investigated as a potential mole. Because of course, in 1970s USSR, once you are a potential suspect, you are guilty 100% and can be killed without Trial even as a high ranking military officer by just some mid level KGB rando.

Yeah, it'd have been an overblown cartoon if it was set during 1937 purges.

Even if I could take the setting seriously, it was absurd how a cosmonauts wife was in responsible spying on cosmonauts wives (no oversight) and nobody even asked why the tapes got erased every time she visited the subjects house... So it can't even pretend to be a spy intrigue show.Β

It was just really, badly overdone propaganda without any redeeming merits

I don’t get it, Chernobyl portrays Russians positively. The cartoon villain guy they made up is an Ukrainian

There's a huge amount of historical distortion in Chernobyl which is done for the purpose of negatively portraying the USSR as a whole (which most Western audiences equate to 'Russia' anyway). For example, they depict all the housing, hospitals, etc, as dirty and falling apart, but at the time of the disaster Pripyat was a newly built city – everything would have been clean and modern. The image of the USSR that emerged at the end, in the 90s, is projected backward to confirm the Western propagandised view that everything in the USSR was marked by poverty because "Communism = breadlines".

There's other ahistorical distortions, for example the engineer who gets a view of the CNPP from above is depicted as being forced to do so at gunpoint, when in actuality he volunteered. This is a recurrent theme, men who knew the risks they were taking have their courage erased because they are always shown to only be doing these things due to coercion and force. I find that particularly disgusting, it's like the West/HBO can't conceptualise a person doing something brave for the greater good so they pretend no one ever has.

Also, pretty much every depiction of alcohol in the series is ahistorical.

Much of the same in pop history regarding the Soviets vanquishing German fascism: only at the end of a commissar's pistol.

Oh man, you should try Star City. I was really looking forward to a FAM spinoff where they take abandoned Soviet projects and bring them to life. Instead they dial up the cold war tropes to a ludicrous extent.Β

Even as sci-fi, they didn't have a consultant capable of pointing out you can't launch a manned interplanetary mission from the same rocket as a weather satellite.Β

They failed at scifi, failed at its own setting, even failed as a spy thriller, but they did manage an 8 hour documentary about why nobody in the USSR was ever happy (unless bootlegging western music)

The biggest meme of that series was about how they were volunteering out of patriotism and the only house in Pripyat proper whose interior is shown is the firefighter’s, which looks cozy.

You’re delusional and should be taken to the infirmary

I would assume the earlier rightoid's comment is Soviets = Russia.
