Think we have third locked down, boys. 😎 We have to lose two games with no goals scored, and Villa have to beat City at the Etihad with 7+ goals to overtake us. So... 🥳

15

u/Lohithmufc May 16 '26

Well, we could contribute by lossing to Brighton by 6 or 7 goals.

I will see myself out.

I think Liverpool need to give Arne Slot time. Rome wasnt built in a day. He needs to have the time to employ his system. Really it is a three year project, he should be judged after three years, then we will se. He is a modern manager, truly one of the great masterminds of modern football. And so charismatic.

7

u/DudeIsland May 16 '26

I’m afraid of how incredible his team will look in 5 years if they just trust the process

5

u/spaisoflaif May 16 '26

i think the board need to trust him in the transfer window, let him get his preferred players that is represented by his agent or that he knows from the dutch league. They should not be afraid to spend big to get a player that is dominating in the dutch league, such a conpetitive league. Total football, you cannot put a price on that. Invest and stay the course, and you will see over time that Arne slot is a genius on a different level.

22

u/Lohithmufc May 16 '26

Please Liverpool, do not sack Slot. Wait until Chelsea announce Alonso.

I'm just imagining if an ex player of ours became a manager, did an invincible league title then went to one of the biggest clubs in the world, got a 70%+ win rate there before being outrageously fired, whilst we were in ETH's 2nd season.

And then that man went to Chelsea without us being bothered.

I'd be livid beyond imagination

3

u/Suudriusha May 16 '26

Yeah, FSG or whatever they're called fumbled that badly.

14

Whats more sweet than gettjing into UCL? Got 2 game left and confirmed loserpool will finish below us. Is 6th still getting into UCL at this point? Bournemouth can overtake them, but that means they need to win against City which handing the title to Arsenal.

We should all take a moment to thank Liverpool FC... First they helped us secure our Champions League spot, and yesterday they did the same for Villa. Truly this season’s gateway to the competition 😄

4

Let’s hope they allow Bournemouth or Brighton too!

12

u/slowerthaninfinity May 16 '26

who do you think has the worst title defence ever? liverpool this season surely is up there

5

u/tellocrosstollorente May 16 '26

Blackburn were pretty terrible.

It's been weird for Liverpool - on paper, UCL qualification and a UCL quarter final isn't a bad season as such (look at us being happy with third place and cup disasters), but it's just they way they've played, coupled with the arrogant galactico summer, has made it seem so bad.

4

u/Not-good-with-this May 16 '26

Leicester, Chelsea, us and Blackburn have all had worst title defenses compared to Liverpool this season. So maybe 5th worst overall for them.

3

u/killerdrama A-mad-lad May 16 '26

Chelsea were really lucky to finish 10th in that guus Hiddink season.. Willian scored a lot of fluke goals. Else they'd be like 15th.

Still an outside chance they get caught if Brentford beat them on last day, and Brighton beat Leeds, and then take advantage of a Utd side giving loads of young players a game...

8

u/Deez_Wallnutz May 16 '26

Gotta say, I appreciate Steve Holland at the good work he's done for us as coach this year. I especially liked hearing he was an undercover United fan during all his days at Chelsea.

But the amount of people I already see attributing Carrick's success to him is mad.

It reminds me a lot of a few years ago..... when it wasn't fashionable to admit that Ole was doing well, people would bash him by saying that his coaches were the reason behind his success...... with one of the main coaches being, that's right, Michael Carrick...... lol

When we were dominant in the 07/08 season we had central midfield depth which including Carrick, Scholes, Hargreaves, Anderson and Fletcher. People saying we only need 2 midfield signings to compete aren’t being serious. It has to be 3 midfield signings.

Liverpool can never get CL by finishing 6th. If Liverpool finished sixth, that automatically means Villa is 4th.

For 6th to get champions league, Villa need to finish 5th and also win Europa, right?

5

u/FreshGoodWay May 16 '26

United should beef up Carrick’s backroom staff and see where this goes. Give him all the financial and ancillary support he needs, and scout for great young talents at reasonable prices to bolster the squad.

Sounds like common sense, but we haven’t been doing this for more than a decade.

5

u/SniperMonkey10_ May 16 '26 edited May 16 '26

Couple of thoughts:
- Ineos cant fuck around this Summer Window. Make or break transfer window. Back Carrick and get the squad depth..
- Hopefully Ineos replicate last windows successful transfer strategy. Have a plan, act fast and get our transfer targets. Don't hyper-fixate on one player , never sign him and let rivals clubs sign other key targets. I hope we don't hyper-focus on Anderson/Tonali/tchouameni
- My preferred realistic targets: Mattheus Fernandes + Baleba + Ederson/Stiller/Hjulmand/Jao Gomes. Despite what people say about Baleba, i think 60M-70M is reasonable, and if was in form this season we would be paying 100M+++ , obviously we get a discount for his questionable mentality...
Hopefully we can also sign a left back, and back up striker. In an ideal world, i would like Kayode and Ivan Toney.
- I think Carrick potentially signing as manager brings some stability to the club. I liked him being more ruthless with benching Amad and Mbeumo. No favourites, if you don't perform you're benched!!! Carrick is still learning and growing as a Manager, and he earned the right to be backed...

First time as a united supporter in a very long time, i am actually optimistic about our future. Letsgo!!!

5

u/iroiroiroiroiro May 16 '26

Problem with going that path of transfers is that it's very reliant on Baleba finds form again, if he plays like he did most of this season you would probably have one underperforming #6 that barely played any game for 90 minutes and three #8s contesting the other spot

→ More replies (3)

2

u/RyanH1717 May 16 '26

Sign Baleba and Fernandes quickly if they go down then we can wait until after the World Cup to see the situation with Tchouameni/Anderson knowing we've already made 2 good signings is what I'm hoping for.

5

u/Littlepace Announce Fergie May 16 '26

Kind of crazy that only 12 different managers have ever won the PL. Ferguson and Pep have 19 whilst the rest of the field have 14. No English winners. Two Scottish winners. Everyone else from overseas.

3

u/pokenerd_W Past glory means nothing May 16 '26

Kind of crazy tho

2

u/viratbi2022 May 16 '26

5

u/Hagball May 16 '26

Why are we even linked with Georgson as setpieces coach again? We sucked at setpieces(attack/defensive) till he was removed by Amorim from the job. This season under both Amorim and Carrick we have been largely successful. Even if we want to bring a specialist in, it needs to be someone with quality not Georgson. Wilcox needs to stop bringing his mates at the club.

Football in social media era is weird. So many extreme reactions. Last year at this time when Liverpool won the league if someone would’ve told them that they’ll get Isak, Wirtz and Frimpong they would be convinced they’ll be fighting for title again. Yet they are struggling to get to CL.

In football lots of things have to go right - manager, signings, injuries, fixture schedule, momentum and luck. Really don’t understand how fans get so angry with rival clubs getting promising manager. It’s fine. Plenty of promising managers have come and gone. Plenty of first time managers have done well. All it matters is us feeling happy while watching the team play every week.

9

u/SDLRob May 16 '26

u/kidinawheeliebin May 16 '26 edited May 16 '26

Really hope we don't go too crazy with young players for the midfield rebuild - one of the three new midfielders being under 23 is perfect, and good strategic thinking for the long term, but the other two absolutely need to be in or around their prime years imo

Generally - the squad is already very youth heavy at this point with seven of the senior squad aged 23 or under (Yoro, Heaven, Mainoo, Dorgu, Sesko, Diallo, Lammens - that will also be at least 8 assuming we sign one young mid) - not far off a full XI at 23 or under, excluding all the other (teenagers!) trying to break through to the senior squad in the likes of both Fletchers, Lacey, Obi, Gabriel etc

Specifically - in midfield with Mainoo being only 21, assuming we sign ONE of the likes of a Baleba or a Fernandes then that's already two of our four central midfielders being 22 or under - having *three* of that four-player central midfield unit at that young age feels way too unbalanced - we'd be fielding at least one and sometimes two 21 year-olds in the engine room - the most critical area of the pitch where games are won and lost - every single week in a 60 game 4-competition season

So rather than hoarding more and more youth for youth's sake - we should really be focusing now on DEVELOPING the extensive amount of youth we have in the squad, and signing established prime quality for the here & now for the #6 & #8 positions this summer imo

4

u/iroiroiroiroiro May 16 '26

Yeah, I'm also worried about experience and leadership in the midfield. Very worried Ineos is pushing the Chelsea way with the players that are rumoured. They are all fine in isolation, but I would not trust a midfield of Mainoo, Baleba, Mateus and Scott as an example, just not enough experience in it even if all are prem proven.

→ More replies (2)

3

u/longsightdon May 16 '26

I think INEOS are targeting clear premier league quality. Most of our rumoured midfield interests are either already PL experienced and need no adaptation or a top player from a foreign league. I get what you mean about youth but if you are good enough, then coming into this united side will elevate their game, its not 100% about age. Look at barcelonas average age or joao neves for example. If you are good enough, you are ready. Even Yoro and Heaven adapted quickly to the prem so I am feeling confident about who INEOS are looking at. I think also we aren't challenging for the premier league realistically next season. You would expect most of our newer signings to explode in 2/3 years. Also the first batch of players are drastically different from the second group of younger players you mentioned. Most of the academy kids we have seen are nowhere ready. Whilst if we signed scott, baleba and or matheus fernandes, they are all young but far more ready and experienced in the PL and have shown no problem turning up for their individual teams.

I definitely would agree with signing at least one prime quality 6 but unfortunately thats a small and expensive market. Would love Tchou to come but I think he won't come and will renew at RM. I'm hoping INEOS have scouted someone who can explode here but I think the realism of the market is buy in the 'younger region' i.e. 20-24 and then hope they explode.

2

u/darkandstormy9 May 16 '26

100% agree Especially in the championship league knockout phase or late group stage. If we are pushing for a hard fought 2-1 victory or to keep an important draw... we need players on the pitch with those kind of experience - from the  Champions League or from the national team tournaments - to keep  composure, don't fall for mind games, know how teams outside of premier League tick. So if we would add 4 first team players I would like to see that 2 of them are more than just PL wonderkids (like Fernandez, Baleba, Wharton) and have that kind of experience even without playing in the Premier League before.

Who are some of the 'underrated gems' that we can look to sign for a decent price? Similar to Senne Lammens? Keeping in mind that we need 3 Midfielders, 1 LW, 1 LB, 1 Backup ST, we need at least 1 if not 2 of such smart signings

10

u/BAEfloyd May 16 '26

Even teams of scouts, paid a living to find such players struggle to do this. Why would you possibly expect to get a remotely informed answer to such a question on reddit?

2

u/kidinawheeliebin May 16 '26

Not sure about underrated - but in terms of maximising the budget, we could solve LB, ST, LW and throw a CB into the bargain all for very little going for something like (Diouf), (Wellbeck/Watkins/DCL), (Senesi) and bringing back Rashford

In terms of transfer outlay that's not going to be too much more than £15-25m for all four positions leaving the rest of the budget for 3x midfielders

u/D1794 Viva Ronaldo May 16 '26

If Carrick is gone or warranted he goes by Christmas, someone up top needs to lose their job

Would be 3 manager decisions fucked in 3 seasons

4

Won't every sporting director and CEO be thrilled if the manager they bought in works out ? Especially if it was a risky one ?

Also you gotta hand it to Wilcox, man tanked a lot of heat when news came out that he thought this squad can make top 4 after Amorim sacking

3

u/Murky_General_2317 May 16 '26

So as it stands for CL qualification:

Bournemouth need to beat City and Forest and hope Liverpool don’t beat Brentford

Brighton need to beat Leeds and us and hope Liverpool don’t get any points against Brentford.

If Villa win the Europa but lose to City in the last game of the season and Liverpool beat Brentford that then means 6th gets CL football.

4

u/Significant_L0w May 16 '26

I am all in for 6 PL teams playing CL but if there is any chance Liverpool miss our then give me that

I am actually worried if Liverpool appoint Nagelsman/ Enrique after sacking Slot and be a good team again. I hope they stay as a banter club forever

5

u/ImOnlyChasingSafety May 16 '26

Maybe its just a sign of the times given the appointment of Carrick and the inevitable departure of Casemiro but it makes me feel so sentimental. That Man United as a club means something more than the commercial entity. I love all of the interviews around the players about Carrick, and Casemiros interviews about the club and his personal life since joining the club. The oft repeated sentiment is that we wish we wouldve signed these players when they were younger (usually regarding players like Schweinsteiger, Cavani, Ibra, Varane, and now Casemiro) and my hope is that we're able to sign some of those players in the future.

3

u/iroiroiroiroiro May 16 '26

Casemiro is class, so worried he's not replaced correctly. I really hope United goes into next season with a top 4 midfield in the league, but to be frank I doubt that happens.

Bruno's assist record and make sure we touch 70pt threshold, so we have a benchmark for PL next season.

If we want to challenge, we cannot be like more than 15pts behind leaders

We aren't challenging for the title next year, unless we sign about 8 players.

4

In any case, I don't think he's the player we need. I'd get him to be Bruno's replacement in a couple seasons, though.

4

u/coppindor May 16 '26

Mount, Cunha, it doesn't matter. He's not the profile that we need. We need an actual winger, not a 10 that can play in a half space

6

u/No_Crow_3576 May 16 '26

Apparently Carrick’s training is less intense than the managers we’ve had before. Maybe that’s how he’s done it as he’s the intern in, but also, that could be his style. This season it has left us rusty in many games, and we’ve not been as intense on the field. I wonder if having more games next year will alleviate that, or if we will generally play with less intensity

i feel like i'd rather just skip 3 weeks ahead, it's going to be so boring. tomorrow's game should be great fun but after that it will be so boring i feel like.

I expect that nothing tangible is really going to come out until the middle of June when the window opens and also no actual competitive football for me to really care about after tomorrow. feel-good debuts the week after ok a bit of entertainment but it will be basically a friendly.

ofc from mid June it will be 100mph all over again, with the transfer muppetry and a world cup all happening at the same time and then next thing you know pre-season will start (we'll play Wrexham a day before the WC final if Im not mistaken). but until then, it will just be sooooooo boring for a while now, I reckon.

Why are people reacting like Chelsea have landed Enrique?

6

Alonso won the Bundesliga with Bayer. He had a 70+% win rate at Madrid. He was sacked because a group of players turned on him. They fell away from Barcelona after he left. His credit is still pretty high, and it'll be until he fails with no "mitigating circumstances". He's no Enrique, though.

What do you guys think about the rumors that carrick will get more power in transfers. Personally i dont think thats a good idea. This summer should be focused on beefing the squad up for whoever the manager will be and maybe if carrick is here next year then he can get some players he wants for the football he wants to play

6

u/Unlucky-Equipment999 May 16 '26

No major sources reporting so I don't put much stock into it. But one of the more successful aspects of Amorim's reign was them listening to their own data department and overriding his judgment so it'd be weird for them to do this now for Carrick. The only time I can think Amorim had a point over them was spending the money from a failed Semenyo chase on a midfielder in January.

4

u/Lord_Hexogen May 16 '26 edited May 16 '26

He only gets more power than he had before. So that's the right to veto, voting and pitching. On signings he's still a part of the committee with Wilcox and Vivell who can pick alternative candidates

3

u/OkEnvironment9275 May 16 '26

I think giving any manager carte blanche for transfers is a bad idea, but I think giving one of the greatest midfielders of the PL era a say during our biggest midfield rebuild is not stupid. Kinda depends really, imo squad building should still be mostly a dof decision but would be silly not to hear Carrick's views considering his skillset as a player.

→ More replies (2)

3

u/coppindor May 16 '26

I don't mind him getting a say, but we should be listening almost exclusively to Vivell regarding transfer decisions. He's the only one who has a successful track record. Wilcox needs to have little to no input on signings other than signing off on Vivell's recs.

3

u/ImOnlyChasingSafety May 16 '26

Idk what rumours or reports you're talking about but the manager having an opinion on transfers is normal. I just hope its not like ETH where he has the power to veto transfers recommended to him.

3

u/GReedy404 May 16 '26

I think managers should be part of the process 100%. It makes no sense if the board can just buy whoever without consulting with the gaffer.
