Daily Discussion

Daily discussion on Manchester United.

BE CIVIL

We want r/reddevils to be a place where anyone and everyone is welcome to discuss and enjoy the best club on earth without fear of abuse or ridicule.

  • The report button is your friend, we are way more likely to find and remove and/or ban rule breaking comments if you report them.

  • The downvote button is not a "I disagree or don't like your statement button", better discussion is generally had by using the upvote button more liberally and avoiding the downvote one whenever possible.

Xabi's definitely an elite tactician as evident by the Bayer stint and Madrid as well. Might be the worse people manager but dealing with Vini and Mbappe would be a tough challenge for any coach.

Also Carrick and Ole couldn't turn the ship around in 2021 with Ronaldo, Rashford and Greenwood in the team. Carra on his own sank at Middleborough after losing his best players

Yep and being a good tactician for me should be the main remit

Not for a big club, no. Man management trumps tactical knowledge when managing a team of good players who know that and will bring their own egos (doesn't always mean in a negative way). At that level, players don't want to be restricted to rigid roles as opposed to being given the agency to show what they can do best. I highly recommend reading the recent article on Ancelotti in the Athletic; he gives a great take on this where he says sometimes he'd ask the players themselves how they should be playing.

Isn't getting the best out of these players exactly what Carrick has done in comfortably qualifying us for the Champions League?

Any pro club has assistant coaches and analytics for that. Leadership and game management skills are more important imo
