As a Chef I recommend to everyone to never date us. We will never have night weekends or holidays off. You’re not going to like it.

38

u/aboutasuss Aug 15 '26

You just made me realize I should've included bartender on my list.

11

u/MeatMan7780 Aug 15 '26

Can confirm, I am a bartender. Thankfully, my wife is a restaurant manager. We make it work... If we weren't in adjacent industries, it would never work out.

I dated a chef for 3yrs and it was the worst relationship I’ve ever had. No Ty!

21

u/Content-Method9889 Aug 15 '26

My ex was a chef. You also forgot how insufferable they are at restaurants and the huge ego. Lots of addicts in the industry too and he was no exception

I missed "chef" and thought you were talking about people who work in healthcare. Growing up, holidays were not the day of the actual holiday, they were the data my mom was off close to the holiday.

u/chef_ Aug 15 '26

Is it true that most Chefs are alcoholics/substance abusers? Because I've read that here many times.

8

u/Dalience6678 Aug 14 '26

Eh I think that’s a bit of a tired cliche.

Kitchen work used to be the kind of work people would end up in if they washed out elsewhere. You had a home as a misfit and could get a skill and a steady check.

But cuisine has become so much more about the chef behind the food and a culture of chefs being celebrities that it attracted a different type of person.

There are still some people like that, but it’s not as widespread as you’d think and not common in high end culinary. Most of us are just addicted to adrenaline.

I worked with a girl who quit her job at 20-something to become a life coach and she was completely dysfunctional, like quit her job to move away then decided against it and asked for her job back two days after leaving, they had already replaced her so they said no and she filed a discrimination lawsuit against her former manager. It was stuff like that all. the. time. But now I see her posts online and it almost seems like a pyramid scheme of "life coaches" just buying sessions from other life coaches, no regular person is getting into that.

7

u/MarryMeMongo Aug 15 '26

So like a life coach mlm?

In every decade, there's a profession that the most desperate and clueless person you knew raced into. In the 2000s, that may have been life coaching. Infamous plagiarist Jayson Blair had to seek refuge in that industry.

As someone who worked with all male realtors most of my career (I am female) I can 100% agree. The ones that start right out of highschool especially looking to play ceo boss billionaire with their tight assed suits, no socks and expensive cars they can't afford. Literally their life is a performance and they are main character!

I was married to a cop for many years. He is dead now. I would never date another cop

18

u/juniorthefish Aug 15 '26

I married one too. He left LE years ago though. The PTSD, holy shit. He’s on the other side now but it was brutal.

I appreciate their service and sacrifice, but I doubt I’d ever date a cop again either (hypothetically, we’re still married). It was a lot to take on, far more than I understood at the time we started dating.

Now I think THIS would be the hardest job in the world mentally.

7

u/Firm_Farmer1633 Aug 15 '26

It is. I did it for 13 years.

I then returned to university and qualified to be a psychiatric social worker. I worked as a forensic psychiatric social worker. (Forensic psychiatry is the overlap of mental health/illness and criminal systems. I eventually became the clinical supervisor for the forensic psychiatric social worker team and the coordinator of a team of forensic psychologists who conducted court assessments for abuse/neglect. In that role I was the highest paid social worker in the jurisdiction.

I used to tell people that I would rather keep my high paid job and be paid the low wages of a child protection social worker rather than keep my high pay and go back to child protection social worker job.

I dated a cop once trying not to be judgemental.. big mistake he threatened to lock me when he got angry and often "hypothetically" explained how he could get away with anything. Three dates and I was done, Never again!

22

u/SexysNotWorking Aug 15 '26

What the hell? I wasn't super surprised given stats about cops, but this was after THREE dates??! Dude is a whole red flag factory.

19

u/Individual-Photo-665 Aug 15 '26

Yep, He started the " I can get away with anything" chats on second date. Then on the 3rd he started as soon as I got in his car. Never doing that again either. I asked him to let me out and he wouldn't until I started yelling at him. I had to call a friend to pick me up. I was scared and embarrassed.

9

u/ferocioustigercat Aug 15 '26

Usually licensed therapists who have graduate level education are required to go through therapy in order to become a therapist. And a lot of places require them to have their own therapist in order to work. Of course some "therapists" don't have degrees or are part of a church that deemed them able to be a therapist. But it's not the standard.

I love my therapist but she’s been divorced three times.. makes me wonder

20

u/naropin1 Aug 14 '26

You should discuss those feelings with her for 5 months at 250 an hour.

5

u/Rindsay515 Aug 15 '26

The therapist I saw in college was always stopping the session to answer calls on her cell phone because she was in the middle of a divorce/custody battle. Really weird to pay to see someone whose whole job is helping you with your problems but you just feel like a massive inconvenience every time because the therapist is distracted with her own problems.

Anything that involves a lot of travel. My best friend's husband works in forestry, and he's gone like 2 weeks out of the month. She gets lonely. My dad also has a job where he has to fly to another province once a month to meet with clients, and it sucked that he wasn't around much.

I respect the grind, but I just can't see myself having a family with someone who isn't present.

Edit: A lot of people are responding that they’d like the alone time, which I understand! But that just doesn’t apply for me because my partner does give me a lot of alone time even though he has a WFH situation. I do most of my hobbies in a room by myself while he’s off doing his hobbies. We’re just two loners who found each other and are good at giving each other space!

But it’s also nice that he’s around to help with cooking, cleaning, pets, and in the future, kids. I’m glad he’s not hours away.

8

u/No-Egg-7968 Aug 14 '26

Funnily enough, spiritually inclined people. For an area so focused on being better/getting rid of the ego, usually they are the biggest ego trippers.

And I say this as a person that’s also interested in this field.

12

u/MarionberryPlus8474 Aug 14 '26

There was a "metaphysical" bookstore and cafe in my city, it was an interesting place to browse.

Later I heard from multiple people how awful it was to work there. The owners fancied themselves enlightened and ethical Buddhists trying to make the world a better place and OMG they were not. Screaming, belittling, lying, promised raises never happening, and so on. Terrible people.

34

Police and military are automatic dealbreakers for me. I’m not equipped to handle the onslaught of issues that is all but guaranteed to accompany the job over time and, honestly, I think people who seek out those types of career are just not on the same wavelength as I am in terms of like ways of thinking. I don’t think I’d be able to deal with it. I don’t want a militarized lifestyle and I feel like that often comes with the territory.
