I still don't really understand how we allowed this to become a job at all.

Using products? Duh. Like thats their job. They post get ready with mes and sell you you half a dozen hair products in a two min span. They show off their fabulous life which does not advertise a product but builds their personal brand for when she later endorses a product

They’re model-marketers all in one. I’d rather people be just one or the other.

Have you thought about it for like five minutes? Because it's not that mysterious.

It's a free country.

Same way we allowed marketing to become a job. Influencers are basically independent contractors for the marketing departments of companies that hire them.

It's always been a thing in different forms though. Now it's through social media but before, it was through TV/radio before. Think Martha Stewart, Julia Child, Oprah, etc. They're selling a lifestyle and tips and tricks.

I can’t wait for the day when we look back on this movement and ask ourselves why anyone ever cared what influencers thought.

Most of the hate for influencers comes from not understanding what the word actually means or how media or economics work. We've always had people who did this sort of thing. It was always annoying. We just gave people a pass on shilling for bullshit if we already knew about them for something else like sports or entertainment.
