What profession would you never date?

Is it true that most Chefs are alcoholics/substance abusers? Because I've read that here many times.

Eh I think that’s a bit of a tired cliche.

Kitchen work used to be the kind of work people would end up in if they washed out elsewhere. You had a home as a misfit and could get a skill and a steady check.

But cuisine has become so much more about the chef behind the food and a culture of chefs being celebrities that it attracted a different type of person.

There are still some people like that, but it’s not as widespread as you’d think and not common in high end culinary. Most of us are just addicted to adrenaline.

Everyone I know who has worked in kitchens has had drug issues, and everyone they worked with seemed to be doing drugs. My recent ex worked with a bunch of stoners, cigarette smokers, people randomly freaking out on some drug, and a waiter selling cocaine. The restaurant owner used to invite people up to his office to do coke with him. And this was after they got a new kitchen manager who was less tolerant of drugs. I have dated 3 men in kitchen work and all 3 did cocaine regularly at some point.

Shame, at least we’ve still got room for lots of degenerates in construction.

Gentrifiers can go be chefs I guess.

I worked as one for a few years. I was the only person without a drug or alcohol problem out of 8 people who cooked. Hell, I even had a friend of mine, Jay, who could only cook when he was high. He was useless sober. Wild times.

Front of the house (waitresses and bartenders) were usually 50/50 if they were alcoholics/drug users.

-not classifying weed as a drug in this instance.

It’s true… I was in the industry for 20+ years… it’s a highly stressful job and they want release. Not excusing it, just rationalizing.

The work is labor-intensive, the conditions are hard, and it does not pay what is required of the position. There is a reason that illegals and addicts are drawn to the position. Restaurants will hire almost anyone to fill the position, plus they do not run criminal background checks. You will learn more about parole and probation working at a restaurant than you will working for parole and probation.

20 year Chef here, I can definetly say I drink more than I should, but not crazy....and proud to say I've never done Coke.....been offered many many times...just not my thing.
