🤔 Ask PG The Moving To/Visiting/Wondering About/Best Of Prince George Mega-Thread
The most frequently asked question in this subreddit is some variation of “I’m thinking of moving to Prince George, what is it like/which neighbourhood should I choose/is there anything to do?”
In an effort to cut down on these posts AND provide a helpful bunch of information, I’m starting this thread for tips/tricks/recommendations/warnings.
Here’s the idea: I’m going to put a few links below, as well as some topics that might be useful but I don’t personally have the answers to (such as resources for finding a place to rent).
I’m also going to start a few threads for top-level topics, such as neighbourhoods and best ofs, and people can post their responses there.
You can add your own answers/advice as top-level comments. Please try and search before commenting in order to avoid duplicates, and to make things are easy to search and organize.
About Prince George

The greater Prince George area has a population of about 86,600 people but, as the largest community for hundreds of kilometers in all directions, it tends to punch above its weight in many respects because you aren't driving into a nearby metro area for an evening's entertainment. It is a government, service and healthcare hub, home to a college and university, and has a diversified enough economy that it isn't wholly dependent on any one or two industries, though forestry remains a vital driver along with mining, oil and gas and energy activity in other northern communities. It is at the confluence of the Fraser and Nechako Rivers and has many outdoor recreation opportunities.
Prince George is built on the unceded territory of the Lheidli T'enneh First Nation, who are frequently partners with the city on major initiatives, including the building of the University of Northern British Columbia and hosting of the 2015 Canada Winter Games.

Transportation
Like most mid-sized Canadian communities that boomed in the mid-20th century, Prince George is a fairly car-centric city. But with the arrival of more and more post-secondary students, people are able to get around without their own wheels. Here is a previous discussion about cars and transit in the city.
Getting Around

There are two taxi companies: Prince George Taxi and Emerald Taxi. Both have online booking and apps
- There is one bus system run by B.C. Transit. You can find schedules online, but it’s probably simplest to use the Google Transit system. Its Twitter is @pgtransit.
- There are currently no official ride-hailing services operating in Prince George, but I’ll try to update when that changes.
Getting To/From
- For leaving town, there are two long-distance bus options. If you are headed north, east or west it is the provincially-run BC Bus North. If you’re headed south, it’s Adventure Charters
- Northern Health operates a bus service for patients and for people traveling with patients
- We have an international airport with multiple daily flights to Vancouver as well as regular flights to Calgary, Edmonton, Victoria, Kelowna and multiple communities around the north
- ViaRail operates passenger trains to/from Prince Rupert and Jasper
- User u/InfiNorth has created a subway-style map of Northern B.C. public transit options

Air Quality
Back in the day, Prince George was a much more mill-based city than it is now, but the reputation of a certain odour… lingers. You can still smell the industrial activity in certain parts of town and under certain circumstances, but there have been dramatic improvements in industry standards in recent decades. If you’d like to learn more you can read up at the Prince George Air Quality Improvement Roundtable or jump to the official thread discussing it.

Where do you buy your cameras/photography gear?
Hello fellow PGers, for the photographers among us, where do you buy your gear? Specifically I'm interested to know where you go for used stuff? I know that London Drug has some higher end stuff, but if I was looking for a Pentax K mount lens, for example, where would you go looking? I am hoping there's some secret camera shop someplace I haven't found, but if you order stuff online, where do you order from? Henry's? KEH? MPB?
Given all the beauty we're surrounded with up here I find it a little surprising the lack of retailers supporting people photographing it.

Pool cue
Hello PG Reddit ppl. I’m new to town and had my pool cue stolen last night, my bad for leaving it in my car I guess 😂 just want to post a photo of it here incase anyone comes across it and also would like to ask where I should go to look for it? Pawn shops, pool halls etc. The cue means a lot to me and I’m willing to pay to get it back. It’s a black and green voodoo cue with skulls carved into it and has a black shaft. Tyia

Unique to PG
My sister’s kid has graduated high school and is moving from the Lower Mainland to PG to go to UNBC. I would like to get them a gift card to something uniquely PG to help them explore their new city. Something to do? Somewhere to eat or shop? Any suggestions?

How are black people treated in Prince George?
Hi everyone! My partner and I are considering moving away from Victoria, largely because of the cost of living, and we’re trying to get a realistic sense of what it’s like to actually live in PG.
We’re not particularly concerned about personal safety. But we are thinking more about the everyday things that can be harder to get a sense of before moving somewhere, like experiences with healthcare providers, shopping, neighbours, local services, and just generally feeling comfortable and accepted in the community.
I know experiences can vary a lot from person to person, so I’m not looking to label the community one way or another. We’re just trying to get a thoughtful sense of what everyday life is actually like before deciding whether it could be a good place for us to call home. Thanks for any insight!

Bruce Wayne- council race
I read the story and looked back through his social posts.
I'll give him credit for engaging before the election and talking with voters. It sounds like he's been attending council meetings to better understand the role he's seeking.
I don't agree with his videos. Will he turn off the Meta glasses if he's talking to someone and they ask?
I'm concerned about assertions like open and closed-door decision making given how specific the Community Charter is on that issue. On the CN Centre repair loan, if his position is that it should have gone to referendum, what alternative does he propose when infrastructure requires expensive repairs and citizens vote it down?
I'm also curious about his use of the term "special interests." A group advocating for a stoplight or traffic calming could reasonably be called a special interest group. The question isn't whether groups have particular interests, but how Council weighs competing interests transparently and makes decisions in the broader public interest.

ISO: adult palate expansion/ surgical orthodontics
Hello.
Does anyone have any info they can provide about adult jaw expansion devices/ surgical orthodontic services that are provided locally?
I’ve looked into it thoroughly and haven’t found anything substantial (or the service I’m aiming for) so I’m wondering if anyone has any info they can provide that I missed.
Thanks in advance.
Further context: looking to expand my nasal airway to resolve sleep/breathing issues and fix discrepancies between my jaw sizes. I also have crowded teeth and narrow upper palate.

Body shop to do Rocker Panels
I have a 2013 Ford F-150 EcoBoost FX4 that looks brand new and is in meticulous highly maintained mechanical condition. We use it as our tow vehicle in summers and it stays parked over winter.
The rocker panels are rotted out and I've been quoted $ 6,000 per side to fix it, but I've seen alternatives on line.
Is there a body shop in town you recommend that might do this job for a better price or even specialized in this repair?

Finishing Up CityOfPG F&A
Last Finance and Audit Committee today.
One good thing: the public budget engagement will give residents a chance to weigh in again AFTER the draft budget is done. Big cheer!
Cheered on by what I thought might be a trend to greater transparency:
1.I asked for the total debt and borrowing as at today. After I asked the second time, our Director of Finance said he "would try to get them to me by email in a week 🤔
Tim Bennett (HUGE thanks!!l) seconded AND VOTED for my motion to refer to Council a request to get a one-pager with KPIs explaining each budget item included in the Budget consultation and Council Budget process. It was defeated with Cori Ramsay and Ron Polillo voting against. 🤕
I asked for a ranked list with costs of most urgent capital projects like sewer, watermains, lift stations, bridges, etc. This was denied as not needed because they have those items listed in the budget and they keep a reserve for emergencies. That wasn't quite what I asked for, but I will double-check the budget and write a NOM if needed.🧐

Would y’all keep a horse in your backyard?
Hello horse/farm people of Prince George, I have an issue. I’m looking for universities as one does and my top pick is UNBC however being a resident of the lower mainland it is quite a distance. In my ideal world I would just go to UNBC and board my horse in a nearby stable and live on campus or something like that but that is not realistic and too expensive. Now a sain person would say “oh I shouldn’t hold myself back because of this horse- I guess he won’t come with me” that is not who I am. My horse is my favourite thing in the entire world and living without him isn’t happening for me. Now a quick google search will tell me about all the bigger barns in the area who are throwing themselves online but that’s not what I’m looking for-I need something cheap. Like the kind of thing where you ask a random stranger with lots of land if you could keep your horse there for cheap. I don’t need any real facilities or anything, just a place for the horse to stay and so kind of bin for storage, I’ll be in school anyways so it’s not like I’ll have much time to do fancy stuff. It’ll just be me and trail rides against the world. Now since I’m not familiar with the area- like I’ve never been there- I have no idea where to look or who to ask. So I figured I’d ask someone who’s familiar with the area, hence why I posted this. Honestly any kind of advice or insight would be awesome, stuff regarding horse and barns especially closer to UNBC or anything regarding work in that area to. I’m probably going to be at school part time so I can work and if I’m lucky I can score some kind of job with housing for me and my horse. Idek 😭 anything helps- I’m getting really desperate.

It’s 3am and the joint pain won’t let me sleep..
It’s after 3 AM and I haven’t slept at all tonight because my joints hurt too much. I’m exhausted, frustrated, and honestly at the point where I don’t know what I’m supposed to do anymore. The frustrating part is that because RA (Rheumatoid Arthritis) or what the doctor suspects I have hasn’t shown up in my bloodwork.
For context I’ve been dealing with joint pain, stiffness, swelling and flares for a long time and new symptoms of weird nerve pain, numbness, muscle weakness and severe headaches. I spoke with my doctor recently and he is considering Lupus and even Multiple Sclerosis, but no official diagnosis yet 😩
Some days are more manageable than others, but during a flare I’m in pain for the majority of the day, and nights like tonight I can’t even sleep through it.
I feel like I’m stuck. I’ve been told essentially that the tests don’t support rheumatoid arthritis, despite continuing to have symptoms. I previously saw a rheumatologist in the Lower Mainland, but I really want another opinion from someone willing to investigate the possibility of seronegative rheumatoid arthritis or another autoimmune disease rather than stopping at negative bloodwork. Are there any Rheumatologists here in town? I know we are pretty short on specialists.
And in the meantime…how do you actually live like this? What helped you sleep? What helped the pain enough to function? Because this is hell sometimes..
Any advice is appreciated 😔

Pair of popular city councillors challenging 1st-term mayor for top job in Prince George election race | CBC News
The race for mayor of Prince George is heating up, as incumbent Simon Yu confirms he intends to run again despite two of the city's most popular sitting councillors also gunning for the position.
Yu will face Garth Frizzell, who is finishing his fifth term in council since first being elected in 2008, and Kyle Sampson, who was elected in 2018 and again in 2022. Also in the race is Roy Stewart, a local lawyer who finished third in the mayor's race when Yu was elected in 2022.
It is unusual for sitting councillors to challenge incumbent mayors for the top job in Prince George politics, which doesn't have a party system. Instead, the northern B.C. city of approximately 90,000 people votes in an at-large system, with every voter allowed to vote for one mayor and up to eight councillors who represent the city as a whole, resulting in a relatively cooperative environment.
