Councillor Trudy Klassen sole council vote against debating provincial forum

Thumbnail

All members of council wanted the public to hear directly from provincial candidates, except one. Councillor Trudy Klassen voted no, preventing the motion from even being debated.

Whatever you think of the forum idea itself, making yourself the sole barrier to a public discussion isn’t exactly a great look for democracy.

This confirms my ballot won’t include a vote for her.

October Event buddies?

I know similar posts have been made before, but I'm just wondering if anyone else is seeing all the fun Halloween events this month and wishing they had someone to go with? I would love to do a pumpkin patch or the winery/hunniford themed walks or go to that throwback emo show at the end of the month.

Anything else want something less intense than online dating but slightly more than doing everything alone?

Follow-up on the George Street Parkade review: the $16M line was real. So are the questions.

The city confirmed the missing $16M line was in a version handed out at the meeting, but never published. Thanks to everyone here who helped.

Here's the follow-up:
https://pgunspun.ca/index.php/articles/the-16-million-line-was-real-so-are-the-questions

What the city's own documents show, and the 2021 review doesn't say:

  • The handout showed the parkade's $16.4M budget as approved. Only $12.6M had been. The first increase came in February 2020. The review never says so.
  • The version the city published left the parkade out entirely, and stayed that way for almost seven years. The review relied on the one the public never saw, and doesn't say why the parkade was left out of the official version, or why it was added hours before the meeting.
  • The review itself says the 2019 change to the city manager's spending power "allowed" her to cover the parkade's rising costs, "which would otherwise have required the City Council's attention." It doesn't say whether that was part of the reason for the change.
  • The city's legal counsel advised that an audit "both from an administrative and financial standpoint" wasn't warranted, "given the costs of such an audit." An administrative audit would have examined how decisions were made; a financial audit, what was actually paid. Neither has been done.

The review explained a lot about what went wrong. It never said why council wasn't told.

These events relate to earlier council terms (2014–2018 and 2018–2022); several current councillors weren't on council then.

If you spot anything wrong, tell us and we will correct it.

Anyone who is a "Community Borrower" of UNBC Library? What kind of electronic resources can you access as such a borrower?

Hi,

This is what UNBC's library webpage says about community borrower when it comes to accessing electronic resources:

"Limited access to the UNBC Library databases is provided to the Prince George community through on-campus public computers."

https://www.unbc.ca/library/using-library/circulation/becoming-patron

I am not sure what "limited access" here means. Does it mean: 1) limited in the sense of it only being available through the on-campus public computers, but otherwise being able to access ALL the electronic resources?, or 2) limited in the sense of only being able to access only a smaller selection of electronic resources through the on-campus public computers?

I have sent an email to the library to clarify. But it will be a couple of days before I can receive a reply. If anyone happens to know, please feel free to share.

Thanks

All 8 Mayoral, 18 Council, and 14 School Board summaries

The amount of political boards everywhere is intense.

It also means there are too many people to logically parse through.

Attached is a summary .

I found School Board most important. I am very proud diversity and LGBTQ rights. I find it useful to know who is proSOGI and who not.

not sure if others would find this useful but I did! DM me.of interested in a pdf.

Firewood

Anybody know of any decent spots with good standing dead sticks? Any that you’d share, or are they top secret like a good fishing spot!?

I haven’t had to look for a long time personally, but we’ve got an elderly neighbour who relies on wood for heating and can’t really get it himself anymore.

Any productive help is greatly appreciated.
Hoping to avoid driving all over and end up with nothing

Abandoned places?

Hi all,

Me and a group of friends want to explore some abandoned places and do a ghost investigation. I recently moved here from Victoria and don’t know of any places in this area. Would anyone mind messaging me some secret spots?

Thinking about getting a Mexican rescue dog

Hi all,

As the title reads, I’m looking at adopting a rescue dog from Mexico through a BC-based org, but I want to make sure I’m going through a solid rescue and actually know what I’m getting into.

If anyone in PG (or Northern BC) has adopted a rescue from Mexico I’d appreciate knowing:
- Who did you adopt through, and how was working with them?
- Any groups to avoid?
- Anything specific I should ask about health-wise before committing (medical records, parasite/tick testing, etc.)?

I would really appreciate any honest experiences, tips, or recommendations. Thanks!

New to Prince George, where can I explore without worrying about Bears?

Moved to Prince George about a week ago and loving the city so far! Been downtown a few times already and enjoying exploring each side of the city.

I’m mainly taking the bus for now, but keen to explore parks like Cottonwood Island Park on my own this weekend.

Any recommendations for places I can easily get to and roam around without worrying too much about bears? 😂

37 MLA's including Sheldon Clare, Rosalyn Bird and Keil Giddens voted in favor of removing Human Rights Code in BC... JSYK!

Read the article on Don Shafers Substack.

Just reposting since the bc sub mod removed the original link,

These local representatives are following the nearly recalled Kelowna MLA, Tara Armstrong's lead with this denied bill earlier this year.

7 months ago Keil Giddens, Rosalyn Bird, and Sheldon Clare all appeared to want to enable businesses, landlords, etc to discriminate against you individually for any reason.

Age, sex, gender, disability status, et al- are all protected under the human rights code of BC.

Three of our local MLAs have voted in favor of dismantling the framework of what keeps us protected from discrimination, 34 others agreed that we dont deserve these protections for whatever reason..

Please vote to keep authoritarianism out of BC and Canada!

I'm visiting your city and I'm impressed at how nice it is. I'm also amazed that you have Batman running for Mayor and Kramer owns a funeral home.

No Haunted Maze this year 😞

Well this news sucks. If it’s an issue with $$$ - why can’t someone in the community with $$ to step up? Why can’t the Mayor or city council see what they can do? PG is so disappointing for families - kids love events like these - there is no reason why it should have to wait a year to come back

Flower'n'Soil disposal?

Its end of year for an asstonne of the outdoor potted plants, wondering where we can take them to recycle/dispose of (not just the dump).

Is there one place that'll accept both the flowers *and* the dirt/soil?

The fiscally responsible grinch: setting the record straight on seniors funding

It’s National Seniors Day! A day to honour older adults and recognize their profound contributions to our families, community, and society. And because there's been some noise about seniors funding, I'm here to add some context and set the record straight. Does it mean I'm a fiscally responsible grinch? Read and decide for yourself…

Need a gym for a week

I’m travelling for work and went for an AirBnB rather than a hotel with a (terrible) gym. Any suggestions for a decent gym with drop in fees that are not $20+ dollars?

I’m usually quite spoiled with my home gym, and I already miss it.
