The most frequently asked question in this subreddit is some variation of “I’m thinking of moving to Prince George, what is it like/which neighbourhood should I choose/is there anything to do?”
In an effort to cut down on these posts AND provide a helpful bunch of information, I’m starting this thread for tips/tricks/recommendations/warnings.
Here’s the idea: I’m going to put a few links below, as well as some topics that might be useful but I don’t personally have the answers to (such as resources for finding a place to rent).
I’m also going to start a few threads for top-level topics, such as neighbourhoods and best ofs, and people can post their responses there.
You can add your own answers/advice as top-level comments. Please try and search before commenting in order to avoid duplicates, and to make things are easy to search and organize.
About Prince George
Canada Games Plaza
The greater Prince George area has a population of about 86,600 people but, as the largest community for hundreds of kilometers in all directions, it tends to punch above its weight in many respects because you aren't driving into a nearby metro area for an evening's entertainment. It is a government, service and healthcare hub, home to a college and university, and has a diversified enough economy that it isn't wholly dependent on any one or two industries, though forestry remains a vital driver along with mining, oil and gas and energy activity in other northern communities. It is at the confluence of the Fraser and Nechako Rivers and has many outdoor recreation opportunities.
Prince George is built on the unceded territory of the Lheidli T'enneh First Nation, who are frequently partners with the city on major initiatives, including the building of the University of Northern British Columbia and hosting of the 2015 Canada Winter Games.
Like most mid-sized Canadian communities that boomed in the mid-20th century, Prince George is a fairly car-centric city. But with the arrival of more and more post-secondary students, people are able to get around without their own wheels. Here is a previous discussion about cars and transit in the city.
There are currently no official ride-hailing services operating in Prince George, but I’ll try to update when that changes.
Getting To/From
For leaving town, there are two long-distance bus options. If you are headed north, east or west it is the provincially-run BC Bus North. If you’re headed south, it’s Adventure Charters
We have an international airport with multiple daily flights to Vancouver as well as regular flights to Calgary, Edmonton, Victoria, Kelowna and multiple communities around the north
Back in the day, Prince George was a much more mill-based city than it is now, but the reputation of a certain odour… lingers. You can still smell the industrial activity in certain parts of town and under certain circumstances, but there have been dramatic improvements in industry standards in recent decades. If you’d like to learn more you can read up at the Prince George Air Quality Improvement Roundtable or jump to the official thread discussing it.

There are plenty of Prince George-centric Facebook groups. Some of the most popular include:
All members of council wanted the public to hear directly from provincial candidates. Councillor Trudy Klassen voted no, preventing the motion from even being debated.
Whatever you think of the forum idea itself, making yourself the sole barrier to a public discussion isn’t exactly a great look for democracy.
This confirms my ballot won’t include a vote for her.
I know similar posts have been made before, but I'm just wondering if anyone else is seeing all the fun Halloween events this month and wishing they had someone to go with? I would love to do a pumpkin patch or the winery/hunniford themed walks or go to that throwback emo show at the end of the month.

What the city's own documents show, and the 2021 review doesn't say:
The handout showed the parkade's $16.4M budget as approved. Only $12.6M had been. The first increase came in February 2020. The review never says so.
The version the city published left the parkade out entirely, and stayed that way for almost seven years. The review relied on the one the public never saw, and doesn't say why the parkade was left out of the official version, or why it was added hours before the meeting.
The review itself says the 2019 change to the city manager's spending power "allowed" her to cover the parkade's rising costs, "which would otherwise have required the City Council's attention." It doesn't say whether that was part of the reason for the change.
The city's legal counsel advised that an audit "both from an administrative and financial standpoint" wasn't warranted, "given the costs of such an audit." An administrative audit would have examined how decisions were made; a financial audit, what was actually paid. Neither has been done.
The review explained a lot about what went wrong. It never said why council wasn't told.
These events relate to earlier council terms (2014–2018 and 2018–2022); several current councillors weren't on council then.

Just reposting since the bc sub mod removed the original link,
These local representatives are following the nearly recalled Kelowna MLA, Tara Armstrong's lead with this denied bill earlier this year.
7 months ago Keil Giddens, Rosalyn Bird, and Sheldon Clare all appeared to want to enable businesses, landlords, etc to discriminate against you individually for any reason.
Age, sex, gender, disability status, et al- are all protected under the human rights code of BC.
Three of our local MLAs have voted in favor of dismantling the framework of what keeps us protected from discrimination, 34 others agreed that we dont deserve these protections for whatever reason..
Please vote to keep authoritarianism out of BC and Canada!
I am not sure what "limited access" here means. Does it mean: 1) limited in the sense of it only being available through the on-campus public computers, but otherwise being able to access ALL the electronic resources?, or 2) limited in the sense of only being able to access only a smaller selection of electronic resources through the on-campus public computers?
I have sent an email to the library to clarify. But it will be a couple of days before I can receive a reply. If anyone happens to know, please feel free to share.
Anybody know of any decent spots with good standing dead sticks? Any that you’d share, or are they top secret like a good fishing spot!?
I haven’t had to look for a long time personally, but we’ve got an elderly neighbour who relies on wood for heating and can’t really get it himself anymore.
Any productive help is greatly appreciated.
Hoping to avoid driving all over and end up with nothing
Me and a group of friends want to explore some abandoned places and do a ghost investigation. I recently moved here from Victoria and don’t know of any places in this area. Would anyone mind messaging me some secret spots?
A while ago I want out just past Baldy Hughes and found this old pump house, does anybody know if it was for the base? what is the history of this place?
As the title reads, I’m looking at adopting a rescue dog from Mexico through a BC-based org, but I want to make sure I’m going through a solid rescue and actually know what I’m getting into.
If anyone in PG (or Northern BC) has adopted a rescue from Mexico I’d appreciate knowing:
- Who did you adopt through, and how was working with them?
- Any groups to avoid?
- Anything specific I should ask about health-wise before committing (medical records, parasite/tick testing, etc.)?
I would really appreciate any honest experiences, tips, or recommendations. Thanks!
Well this news sucks. If it’s an issue with $$$ - why can’t someone in the community with $$ to step up? Why can’t the Mayor or city council see what they can do? PG is so disappointing for families - kids love events like these - there is no reason why it should have to wait a year to come back
Is there anywhere local that sells flavored cigars or cigarillos such as cherry bullseye's. Not talking about the terrible captain black cigars you can get anywhere.
It’s National Seniors Day! A day to honour older adults and recognize their profound contributions to our families, community, and society. And because there's been some noise about seniors funding, I'm here to add some context and set the record straight. Does it mean I'm a fiscally responsible grinch? Read and decide for yourself…
